Gender Dimorphism In The United States Legal System: A "Post-Feminist" And Comparative Critique, Jim Wilets

ILSA Journal of International & Comparative Law

In the last three decades, there has been extensive jurisprudential literature positing that the structure, values, and processes of the American legal and educational system, focusing heavily on adversarial battle among parties in court, and competition in law school, are fundamentally "male- centered.

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) describes their accreditation as the hallmark of business education. According to information at BestBizSchools.com (n.d.), AACSB accreditation represents the highest standard of achievement for business schools worldwide. Being AACSB accredited means a business school is able to continuously pass a strict set of standards that ensure quality. As of December 2010, only 5%, or 607, of the academic business programs globally were accredited by AACSB. This number represents schools in 38 countries where the majority of programs incorporate both undergraduate and graduate education covering business, accounting, or both. An institution must …

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

Understanding the complexity of human–nature interactions is central to the quest for both human well-being and global sustainability. To build an understanding of these interactions, scientists, planners, resource managers, policymakers, and communities increasingly are collaborating across wide-ranging disciplines and knowledge domains. Scientists and others are generating new integrated knowledge on top of their requisite specialized knowledge to understand complex systems in order to solve pressing environmental and social problems (e.g., Carpenter et al. 2009). One approach to this sort of integration, bringing together detailed knowledge of various disciplines (e.g., social, economic, biological, and geophysical), has become known as the study …

Impacts On The Global Ocean Circulation From Vertical Mixing And A Collapsing Ice Sheet, J. A. M. Green, G. R. Bigg Jan 2011

Impacts On The Global Ocean Circulation From Vertical Mixing And A Collapsing Ice Sheet, J. A. M. Green, G. R. Bigg

Journal of Marine Research

The current view of the global meridional overturning circulation (MOC) is one where the Atlantic is a dominant basin for deep water formation, but with the potential for bipolar seesaws between the Southern Ocean and the North Atlantic during catastrophic freshening events in either hemisphere. Here we investigate the stability of this paradigm through the response of an intermediate complexity coupled climate model, set in an oceanically more sensitive glacial configuration, to variation in the vertical mixing rates. It is found that the convective basin is set by the upper ocean diffusivity, with higher such diffusivities leading to a Pacific-dominated …

Dorotea’S Displacement: Performing The Possible In Early Modern Spain, Christine Garst-Santos Jan 2011

Dorotea’S Displacement: Performing The Possible In Early Modern Spain, Christine Garst-Santos

School of American and Global Studies Faculty Publications with a Focus on Modern Languages and Global Studies

The interRAI CHA and DbS represents a multidimensional, standardized assessment instrument for use with adults (18 and older) who are deafblind. The interrater reliability of the instrument was tested through the completion of dual assessments with 44 individuals who were deafblind in the province of Ontario, Canada. Overall, nearly 50% of items had a kappa value of at least 0.60, indicating fair to substantial agreement for these items. Several items related to psychosocial well-being, mood, and sense of involvement had kappa scores of …

Harnessing The Power Of Genomics And Immunoinformatics To Produce Improved Vaccines, Leonard Moise, Leslie Cousens, Joanna Fueyo, Anne S. De Groot Jan 2011

Harnessing The Power Of Genomics And Immunoinformatics To Produce Improved Vaccines, Leonard Moise, Leslie Cousens, Joanna Fueyo, Anne S. De Groot

Institute for Immunology and Informatics Faculty Publications

The role of cellular immunity as a mediator of protection against disease is gaining recognition, particularly with regard to the many pathogens for which we presently lack effective vaccines. As a result, there is an ever-increasing need to understand the T-cell populations induced by vaccination and, therefore, T-cell epitopes responsible for triggering their activation. Although the characterization and harnessing of cellular immunity for vaccine development is an active area of research interest, the field still needs to rigorously define T-cell epitope specificities, above all, on a genomic level. New immunoinformatic epitope mapping tools now make it possible to identify pathogen …

Insect Signature Indicating Corpse Movement From Urban To Rural Areas Of Northeast Ohio, Krystal R. Hans Jan 2011

Insect Signature Indicating Corpse Movement From Urban To Rural Areas Of Northeast Ohio, Krystal R. Hans

ETD Archive

The distribution of insects geographically may provide evidence that indicates the movement of human remains from one location to another. The aims of this study were: (1) to observe insect succession in an urban and rural area in northeastern Ohio to document differences in the entomofaunal succession, and (2) to determine if there is an insect signature associated with a body moved from an urban to a rural area. It was hypothesized that there would be a difference in species composition between the urban and rural sites and the body moved would retain insect evidence indicating initial exposure to an …

Producing Governable Subjects: Images Of Childhood Old And New, Karen Smith Jan 2011

Producing Governable Subjects: Images Of Childhood Old And New, Karen Smith

Articles

Conceptions of childhood in terms of ‘evil’ and ‘innocence’ transcend time and culture. These conflicting images are deployed by Chris Jenks as the Dionysian and Apollonian models of childhood to symbolize external and internal forms of control. Drawing on the literature on governmentality this paper revisits these models and introduces a third model, the ‘Athenian’ child, analogous and supplementary to those developed by Jenks. This model is necessary in order to take account of relatively recent strategies in the government of childhood, which, predicated on understandings of children in terms of competence and agency, operate via responsibility and reflexivity.

The Green Legacy Project: Evaluating Campus Tree Benefits, Joy Fritschle, Gary Coutu, Joan Welch, Gerard D. Hertel Jan 2011

The Green Legacy Project: Evaluating Campus Tree Benefits, Joy Fritschle, Gary Coutu, Joan Welch, Gerard D. Hertel

WCU Tree Campus USA Documents

Trees on our campus sequester and store carbon, mitigate urban heat island effects, ameliorate air pollution, reduce stormwater runoff, improve water quality, provide habitat for native birds and other animals, and enhance aesthetics. Adequate planning and management of this valuable resource first requires a sound understanding of existing conditions. To this end, a collaborative group of faculty, staff, and students at West Chester University initiated the Green Legacy Project. We conducted an inventory and assessment of north campus tree resources and developed a GIS management database. Approximately 1900 trees cover 16% of north campus, half of which are non-native species. …

The Effects Of A Web Presence On Sportscasting Audiences, Adam Cavalier Jan 2011

The Effects Of A Web Presence On Sportscasting Audiences, Adam Cavalier

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this research is to determine how much and what type of Web presence/content effectively draws listeners and viewers to the major sportscasts a station presents. Ad revenue, viewership/listenership and audience fragmentation all are conundrums in today's fluctuating media landscape. Combine those issues with the present economic crisis and the vast majority of media companies must rethink the way they do business. This research seeks to lay groundwork as to what new strategies effectively draw listeners/viewers back to the traditional media of radio and television while expanding upon the relatively new online media offerings. Furthermore, this research is …

From Donorship To Ownership? Evolving Donor-Government Relationships In Rwanda, Haley Swedlund Jan 2011

From Donorship To Ownership? Evolving Donor-Government Relationships In Rwanda, Haley Swedlund

Political Science - Dissertations

Over the course of the last decade there has been an increasing emphasis on recipient-country ownership, or the "effective exercise of a government's authority over development policies and activities, including those that rely...on external resources" (OECD 2007), within the international development community. This new emphasis is not only rhetorical but has resulted in a host of new aid programs promising increased ownership. Broadly speaking, these aid programs are supposed to change the institutional relationships between donors and recipient-country governments and allow aid beneficiaries to have a say over the development policies that impact their daily lives. However, despite their prevalence, …

Till Death Do Us Part: Chief Justices And The United States Supreme Court, Todd C. Peppers, Chad M. Oldfather Jan 2011

Till Death Do Us Part: Chief Justices And The United States Supreme Court, Todd C. Peppers, Chad M. Oldfather

Scholarly Articles

In this Essay, we identify and explore an additional institutional difficulty, which bridges these last two components of the proposed Act. Prior commentary has chronicled the phenomenon of Justices serving beyond the point at which they are able to perform their duties. It has also addressed the unique powers and responsibilities of the Chief Justice, with some arguing that the administrative aspects of the role should be divorced from the effectively life tenure associated with a position on the Court. We wish to highlight a connection. The unique powers and responsibilities of the center chair may make Chief Justices even …

Landscape, Labor, And Practice: Slavery And Freedom At Green Castle Estate, Antigua, Samantha Anne Rebovich Jan 2011

Landscape, Labor, And Practice: Slavery And Freedom At Green Castle Estate, Antigua, Samantha Anne Rebovich

Anthropology - Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the shift from slavery to freedom in Antigua by examining the landscapes and lifeways of enslaved and free laborers at Green Castle Estate during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Taking a diachronic approach to the past, I examine the production of landscape at Green Castle Estate and in Antigua to contextualize how the social relations of slavery and freedom unfolded in this specific geography. I argue that landscape did not merely serve as a backdrop to the success of sugar in Antigua but was carefully manipulated to ensure the success of that industry on the island. Amidst …
