A Study Of The Perceptions And Worldviews Of Mature Age Pre-Service Teachers Aged Between 31 And 53 Years, Matthew B. Etherington

Education Papers and Journal Articles

This study presents the perceptions and worldviews of 17 mature age second-career pre-service teachers in career transition. The aim was to explore the experience of becoming a primary school teacher after a first career. The second-career pre-service teachers were enrolled on a fulltime basis at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE/UT). The primary data were collected from 17 separate interviews of approximately 1 h; over two separate calendar years, which totalled a five-month interviewing period. The interviewees volunteered to be part of the study and were aged between 31 and 53 and enrolled in two high academic entry-level …

San Benito County And California's Geopolitical Fault Lines, Corey Cook, David Latterman Jan 2011

San Benito County And California's Geopolitical Fault Lines, Corey Cook, David Latterman

McCarthy Center Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Over the past decade San Benito County has emerged as California’s textbook bellwether county, narrowly mirroring statewide election results on ballot measures and statewide candidate races. San Benito’s uncanny predictive power suggests the importance of California emerging political geography as it straddles the major political fault lines of the state. Neither northern nor southern, neither coastal nor inland, and neither urban nor rural, San Benito illustrates the broad geographic forces shaping contemporary California politics.

November 2011 Preliminary Rcv Analysis, David Latterman, Corey Cook

McCarthy Center Faculty and Staff Scholarship

We present here an initial RCV analysis of the 2011 San Francisco Sheriff, District Attorney, and Mayor race. For each race, we examine the first choice by second choice voting patterns, the frequency of slates, and the number of times a candidate is on a ballot, which is useful measure of candidate performance. We also show maps for each race's winner, with a few ethnic and Progressive Voter Index (PVI) correlations when noteworthy.

For the first time, we are also able to present cross-contest analyses at the individual voter level. The city’s ballot images maintain consistent voter identification numbers. This …

After The Smoke Clears: Examining Curricular Approaches To Environmental Education In Bhopal, India, R Iyengar, Monisha Bajaj

School of Education Faculty Research

This article examines approaches to environmental education in Bhopal, India. It is an attempt to understand how much environmental education as a topic has been incorporated into formal curricula. An analysis of state and national syllabi indicates a focus on conventional, natural sciences approaches to the environment, thus neglecting the social science aspects of education for sustainable development across all grade levels. Environmental disasters are given a very general treatment with no contextual link to incidents like the Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984. Social dimensions like environmental citizenship are also minimally mentioned. Finally, the article highlights the large gap between …

Movement Of Smallmouth Bass Within The Beaver Island Archipelago, Northern Lake Michigan., Mark A. Kaemingk, Tracy L. Galarowicz, John A. Clevenger, David F. Clapp

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Fish movement may vary across a wide array of aquatic ecosystems and may be related to the overall size of the system inhabited. We investigated movement of smallmouth bass in Lake Michigan because this information is lacking for larger systems. A total of 16 smallmouth bass were surgically implanted with ultrasonic transmitters within the Beaver Archipelago, northern Lake Michigan. During 2007–2008, a maximum of one location per individual was recorded daily during three specific tracking periods – pre-spawn, spawning, and post-spawn – to determine diurnal movement patterns. Movement was evaluated as site fidelity, minimum displacement rate, maximumexcursion rate, and distance from …

More accurate projections of future carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere and associated climate change depend on improved scientific understanding of the terrestrial carbon cycle. Despite the consensus that U.S. terrestrial ecosystems provide a carbon sink, the size, distribution, and interannual variability of this sink remain uncertain. Here we report a terrestrial carbon sink in the conterminous U.S. at 0.63 pg C yr−1 with the majority of the sink in regions dominated by evergreen and deciduous forests and savannas. This estimate is based on our continuous estimates of net ecosystem carbon exchange (NEE) with high spatial (1 km) and …

Post-Disaster Assessment Of Northeastern Coastal Region For The 2011 Sendai Earthquake And Tsunami, Ruopu Li, Shishi Liu, Qingfeng Guan, Yi Peng

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The 2011 Sendai Earthquake has hit the north-east of Japan triggering a destructive tsunami that has caused extensive damage. A fast and effective post-disaster assessment is highly imperative for the recovery of this region. This study modeled the tsunami-affected areas of coastal Fukushima Prefecture using Landsat-7 ETM+ data and terrain analysis. The result shows that most of the coastal areas were significantly affected by the tsunami. The low-lying plains along the coast are particularly vulnerable to the tsunami.

A Review Of Interior Least Tern And Piping Plover Management, Conservation, And Recovery On The Lower Platte River, Nebraska, Mary Bomberger Brown, Joel G. Jorgensen, Sonya E. Steckler, Melissa J. Panella, W. Ross Silcock

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

SUMMARY

The Lower Platte River in eastern Nebraska provides many resources for wildlife and a variety of stakeholders. This river and its major tributaries contain important nesting habitat for two state and federally-listed bird species, the Interior Least Tern (endangered; Sternula antillarum athalassos) and the Northern Great Plains Piping Plover (threatened; Charadrius melodus). Both species nest on bare or sparsely-vegetated expanses of sand in natural and human-created habitat, which occur in and along river channels; the Lower Platte River system is critical for the survival and recovery of both species.

The Lower Platte River in eastern Nebraska provides …

Compositional Trajectories [Medieval Music], Peter M. Lefferts Jan 2011

Compositional Trajectories [Medieval Music], Peter M. Lefferts

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

Here, to illuminate a small set of issues in respect to style and compositional practice, we will approach the medieval composer via specific repertory, namely, some sacred chants and some two-voice polyphony.

A persistent conviction of many relative newcomers to medieval music is that all chant sounds the same - melodically vague, un differentiable, hypnotic and slightly 'New Age' - and that it is governed by a universal, monolithic, standard medieval 'theory of the modes'. Neither of these points is true, but one needs to gain a broad familiarity with some very large bodies of melodies, and the histories of …

Buckeye Battleground, Daniel J. Coffey, John C. Green, David B. Cohen, Stephen C. Brooks Jan 2011

Buckeye Battleground, Daniel J. Coffey, John C. Green, David B. Cohen, Stephen C. Brooks

Buckeye Battleground

Buckeye Battleground is the result of a decade’s worth of research at the Bliss Institute on elections in Ohio, with special emphasis on the 2004 and 2008 presidential campaigns, and the 2006 gubernatorial campaign. This book seeks to explain why Ohio is, and has been, at the center of American elections. Using historical analysis, demographic data, and public opinion surveys, the authors demonstrate Ohio’s role as the quintessential “battleground” state in American elections. This title is unique in its approach and coverage.

Regional Science Reconsidered, Peter V. Schaeffer, Randall Jackson, James O. Bukenya Jan 2011

Regional Science Reconsidered, Peter V. Schaeffer, Randall Jackson, James O. Bukenya

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Because disciplines and their cores and boundaries are subject to change, a periodic introspective assessment can be useful in evaluating the relevance of a changing discipline to the equally dynamic and pressing needs of society. Similar examinations of other disciplines, notably economics, have been conducted in part as a means of minimizing the risks of declining credibility, policy relevance, and societal benefit. With the Southern Regional Science Association celebrating recently its 50th meeting, and as regional science itself approaches its 60th year, this paper provides a reexamination of the core of regional science. We consider the theoretical and methodological underpinnings …

Controls On Precipitation And Cloudiness In Simulations Of Trade-Wind Cumulus As Observed During Rico, Margreet C Vanzanten, Bjorn Stevens, Louise Nuijens, Y. Kogan

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Data from the undisturbed period of the Rain in Cumulus over the Ocean (RICO) field study are used to create a test case for large-eddy simulations of shallow, precipitating, trade-wind cumulus. Measurements upon which the test case are based are aug-mented by a regional scale downscaling of meteorological analyses so as to provide forcing data consistent with the measurements. Twelve large-eddy simulations, with a wide range of microphysical representations, are compared to each other, and to independent measurements during RICO. The ensemble average of the simulations plausibly reproduces many features of the observed clouds, including the vertical structure of cloud …

The More Things Change ... : Abortion Politics & The Regulation Of Assisted Reproductive Technology, Beth Burkstrand-Reid Jan 2011

The More Things Change ... : Abortion Politics & The Regulation Of Assisted Reproductive Technology, Beth Burkstrand-Reid

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

Comparing abortion and assisted reproductive technology (ART)--especially controversial techniques like cytoplasm donation--may be detrimental to both. Each technology forces society to confront the deepest issues concerning the beginning of life and, for women, forces them to consider when motherhood begins and what responsibilities might flow from it. Abortion rights advocates must push the inception of motherhood to a point as late in the gestational process as possible so as to avoid thorny issues of fetal personhood. Fertility doctors and their patients may have just as strong of an interest in recognizing an earlier start to motherhood, as a way of …

On Saving The Death Penalty: A Comment On Adam Gershowitz’S Statewide Capital Punishment, Eric Berger Jan 2011

On Saving The Death Penalty: A Comment On Adam Gershowitz’S Statewide Capital Punishment, Eric Berger

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

In Statewide Capital Punishment: The Case for Eliminating Counties’ Role in the Death Penalty, Professor Adam Gershowitz argues that it is misleading ―to suggest that "the State of Texas is a prolific user of capital punishment." As Gershowitz explains, it is not the State of Texas that prosecutes death penalty cases, but rather counties within the State. In fact, only a few of Texas‘s 254 counties seek capital punishment with any regularity. In this regard, Texas is not anomalous. Other states, such as Pennsylvania and California, also have wide variations among counties‘ imposition of the death penalty, even among …

Witnessing To Christ In A Pluralistic World: Christian Mission Among Other Faiths, Lalsangkima Pachuau, Knud Jorgensen

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

'Christian Mission among Other Faiths' was one of the Edinburgh 2010 themes. As part of the study process, position papers and case studies were invited from a wide range of contributors representing various theological positions, confessional traditions and denominational bodies. The quality of the studies and the variety they represent convinced us to publish in this form. The position papers are reflections on the theme by scholars belonging to Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Protestant-Conciliar, Protestant-Evangelical, Pentecostal, and Seventh-Day Adventist Churches. Among the case studies are articles on Christian mission among Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, new religious movements and folk or …

Morphological Convergence Of Shell Shape In Distantly Related Scallop Species (Mollusca: Pectinidae), Alvin Alejandrino, Jeanne M. Serb, Erik Otárola-Castillo, Dean C. Adams Jan 2011

Morphological Convergence Of Shell Shape In Distantly Related Scallop Species (Mollusca: Pectinidae), Alvin Alejandrino, Jeanne M. Serb, Erik Otárola-Castillo, Dean C. Adams

Biology

Morphological convergence is a central concept in evolutionary biology, but convergent patterns remain under-studied in nonvertebrate organisms. Some scallop species exhibit long-distance swimming, a behaviour whose biomechanical requirements probably generate similar selective regimes. We tested the hypothesis that shell shape similarity in long-distance swimming species is a result of convergent evolution. Using landmark-based geometric morphometrics, we quantified shell shape in seven species representing major behavioural habits. All species displayed distinct shell shapes, with the exception of the two long-distance swimmers, whose shells were indistinguishable. These species also displayed reduced morphological variance relative to other taxa. Finally, a phylogenetic simulation revealed …
