Assessing The Impacts Of Local Knowledge And Technology On Climate Change Vulnerability In Remote Communities, Chrisopher Bone, Lilian Alessa, Mark Altaweel, Andrew Kliskey, Richard B. Lammers Mar 2011

Assessing The Impacts Of Local Knowledge And Technology On Climate Change Vulnerability In Remote Communities, Chrisopher Bone, Lilian Alessa, Mark Altaweel, Andrew Kliskey, Richard B. Lammers

Faculty Publications

The introduction of new technologies into small remote communities can alter how individuals acquire knowledge about their surrounding environment. This is especially true when technologies that satisfy basic needs, such as freshwater use, create a distance (i.e., diminishing exposure) between individuals and their environment. However, such distancing can potentially be countered by the transfer of local knowledge between community members and from one generation to the next. The objective of this study is to simulate by way of agent-based modeling the tensions between technology-induced distancing and local knowledge that are exerted on community vulnerability to climate change. A model is …

Prototyping Self In Silicon Valley, Deep Diversity As A Framework For Anthropological Inquiry, Jan English-Lueck Mar 2011

Prototyping Self In Silicon Valley, Deep Diversity As A Framework For Anthropological Inquiry, Jan English-Lueck

Faculty Publications, Anthropology

High-technology work fuels a dynamic global exchange from technopoles throughout the world, but especially between East and South Asia and the northern Californian region of Silicon Valley. This migration drives an expanded number of ancestral identities. Professional and activity-based identities flourish as Silicon Valley’s strong narrative of meritocracy loosens the grip of birth ascription on the creation of identities. These achieved identities proliferate as people experiment on their own sense of self. Traditional conceptual tools related to immigration, and even such contemporary approaches as Appadurai’s ethnoscapes, do not adequately illuminate the ethnographic data on Silicon Valley workers, families, and especially …

Mega-Terracettes And Related Ungulate Activities In Loess Hills, Iowa, Usa, Brandon J. Weihs, John F. Shroder Jr.

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

Terracettes are small, quasi-parallel, staircase-like, stepped landforms generally <1 m in tread width and riser height, as long as 300 m, and located transversely along slopes. Numerous theories purport to explain causal mechanisms, including animal disturbance, soil creep, solifluction (gelifluction), slumping and rotational slippage, regolith and vegetation control, subsidence, and anthropogenesis or tectonism. Terracettes in the western Iowa Loess Hills were characterized morphogenetically, with field observations suggesting high association with ungulate activities. A new class of mega-terracette is recognized that characterizes studyarea forms orders of magnitude larger than those discussed by others. This addition to the prior terracette morphologies adds to understanding of concepts of equifinality in which terracettes result from multiple processes. These mega-terracettes are related to ungulate activities of geophagy, soil transport from hooves, compaction, smearing, pawing, and wallowing (dust bathing) as well as the effects of variable soil moisture on erosion of the forms.

Emigrant Effects On Bilateral Trade: Reexamining The Immigrant-Trade Link From The Home Country Perspective, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse Mar 2011

Emigrant Effects On Bilateral Trade: Reexamining The Immigrant-Trade Link From The Home Country Perspective, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse

Economics

A voluminous literature examines the immigrant-trade link. Available studies evaluate the link largely from the host country perspective and generally indicate that immigrants exert positive influences on trade between their host and home countries. Few studies, however, explore the effects of emigrants on trade. Using data representing the stocks of emigrants from 131 home countries that resided in 110 host countries during the year 2005, we examine the immigrant/emigrant-trade link from both the home country perspective and the host country perspective. Doing so, we provide the first comprehensive estimates of pro-trade emigrant effects for each home country in our study.

Brazil's Security Strategy And Defense Doctrine, Andrew Fishman Mr., Max G. Manwaring Dr. Mar 2011

Brazil's Security Strategy And Defense Doctrine, Andrew Fishman Mr., Max G. Manwaring Dr.

Articles & Editorials

Brazil is a developing nation well situated in time and place. Unlike other areas of the world, it has no bloody religious or ethnic conflicts, and its last border conflict took place in the early 19th century. However, Brazil is the most populous Latin American nation, with nearly 200 million inhabitants, and thousands of miles of land and sea borders. These borders, together with large natural gas and oil reserves and the “Green” Amazon (land and river areas within the Amazon Basin) and “Blue” Amazon (coastal areas of Brazil where major hydro-carbon and other resources are located), are strategic strengths, …
