Gallaudet At 150: Chapter One, Meredith M. Peruzzi Apr 2011

Gallaudet At 150: Chapter One, Meredith M. Peruzzi

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

No comprehensive history of Gallaudet University has been published since 1985. Although more recent works have focused on specific events since that time, it has been nearly 30 years since Gallaudet’s history has been examined as a whole. No book about Gallaudet’s history has ever been created for a general, non-academic audience, in an accessible, “coffee table” style. This book uses that format to present the first 16 years of the college’s existence with sections on Architecture, Academics, Student Life, and Notable People. It is the first chapter of a future publication that will honor the institution’s sesquicentennial anniversary.

Geography and the Environment Poster Presentations

On June 5th 2009, an estimated thirty people died in a clash between governmental authorities and indigenous people near Bagua, Peru. Termed the "Bagua Massacre," this event underscores the marginalized role of Indigenous Amazonians when confronting multinational commercial interests supported by the state (Shepard, 2009). The indigenous people were protesting the “Law of the Jungle,” Decree 1090, a 2009 decree assuming heavily-forested indigenous lands idle and unproductive, and providing the legal basis to privatize comunally-held forests to facilitate petroleum, biofuel, hydroelectric and logging projects. Since contact, the assumption of indigenous people unproductively managing their forested homelands has fueled colonization, deforestation, …

The Oldest High School Band In America: The Christian Brothers Band Of Memphis, 1872-1947, Patrick Joseph Bolton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this research is to present a detailed history of the Christian Brothers Band in Memphis, Tennessee from 1872 to 1947, the first seventy-five years of the program. In this research Iam also exploring the possibility that the band may be the oldest high school band in America, outliving bands before it and having a continuous existence since its founding (based mainly on its lineage of band directors). Furthermore, the project provides a comprehensive history of the Christian Brothers music programs, including band, choir and orchestra rosters, music awards given throughout the years, works performed by musical groups …

Jurisprudence Of A Fledgling Federation: A Critical Analysis Of Pakistan’S Judicial View On Federalism, Umer Akram Chaudhry Apr 2011

Jurisprudence Of A Fledgling Federation: A Critical Analysis Of Pakistan’S Judicial View On Federalism, Umer Akram Chaudhry

Cornell Law School Inter-University Graduate Student Conference Papers

Although the impediments in development of federation in Pakistan can be explored from different facets, this paper aims to critically analyze the constitutional history and judicial interpretation of federalism in Pakistan against the scholarly and conceptual debates over the idea. The paper argues that Pakistan’s judiciary, despite recognizing federalism as cornerstone of the Constitution, has not upheld the principle as strongly as other salient features of the Constitution. The superior judiciary has strengthened the official discourse of a unitary national identity leaving little room for ethnical pluralism and participatory nationalism. The paper shall also review measures introduced by the recent …

In Search Of Theory: Towards An Integrating Conceptual Framework For Subsidiary Research, Donal O'Brien, Pamela Sharkey Scott, Patrick Gibbons Apr 2011

In Search Of Theory: Towards An Integrating Conceptual Framework For Subsidiary Research, Donal O'Brien, Pamela Sharkey Scott, Patrick Gibbons

Conference Papers

Despite the importance of the strategic choices taken by subsidiary managers to the long terms survival of their unit, little is known about the phenomenon. (Dörrenbächer & Geppert, 2009, Scott, Gibbons, & Coughlan, 2010). This paper analyses and synthesises the research streams on subsidiary management to date to provide critical conceptual insights and proposes a new theoretical approach to subsidiary analysis, applied to the critical routine of subsidiary strategy. The adoption of more global business structures by MNEs has led to additional strategic constraints on subsidiary managers (Buckley, 2009, Buckley & Ghauri, 2004, Mudambi, 2008), which we categorise as the …

Portland's Goose Hollow, Tracy J. Prince Apr 2011

Portland's Goose Hollow, Tracy J. Prince

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of Portland’s oldest neighborhoods, Goose Hollow is steps from downtown and beloved for its quirky character, historic homes, spectacular views, and walkability. Over a century ago, the actual “hollow” was dramatically altered when the meandering Tanner Creek, in a deep gulch with several trestle bridge crossings, was diverted underground and infilled. The creek’s presence is still felt in the ravine carved through the Tualatin Mountains (spanned by the Vista Bridge) and in the neighborhood’s identity. This book provides definitive answers to how Goose Hollow got its name and how Tanner Creek Gulch was filled. Stories are also told of …

“You Know How It Works, It Is A Dance, An Art, Not A Science”: A Qualitative Study On Decision Making By Public Two-Year College Presidents, Chad Michael Coauette Apr 2011

“You Know How It Works, It Is A Dance, An Art, Not A Science”: A Qualitative Study On Decision Making By Public Two-Year College Presidents, Chad Michael Coauette

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to explore the decision making processes of public two-year college presidents. This research examines the factors that influence a public two-year college president's decision to respond or not respond to external stakeholders that request new or improved programming/services from the college. The researcher incorporates the concept of naturalistic decision making to augment Stark and Lattuca's (1997) model that illustrates influences on the college educational environment to examine how presidents respond to requests made by external stakeholders. The researcher found that when presidents make decisions about responding to external stakeholder requests they are not simply …

Here’S My Card: Provincial Coinage As Advertising For The Temple Of Asclepius In Pergamum, Kelly Ward Apr 2011

Here’S My Card: Provincial Coinage As Advertising For The Temple Of Asclepius In Pergamum, Kelly Ward

9th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium and Celebration

Subject:                 History – Ancient Rome – Severan Dynasty

Motivation:          During my research, I noticed that imagery of Asclepius and his temple were prevalent on the Pergamene coinage of Caracalla. I decided to investigate the coinage produced by the Pergamene mint from the reign of Marcus Aurelius through Elagabalus to determine if the frequency of Asclepius-related imagery correlated to specific events, which might indicate that the Pergamenes were trying to advertise these events and the Asclepion temple via coinage.

Thesis:                   Special events, Asclepion popularity, and coin circulation patterns combined to motivate the Pergamenes to advertise their Asclepion on coinage.

Methods:               Examination …

Tyche's Twin, Lynn Rose Kuznitz Apr 2011

Tyche's Twin, Lynn Rose Kuznitz

9th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium and Celebration

Subject Domain: History – Ancient Rome – Severan Dynasty Motivation: While doing undergraduate research this summer, I noticed a trend on the coinage of Laodicaea ad Mare during the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus. This trend was the city’s tendency to depict the empress, Julia Domna, in the same way it depicted its patron goddess, Tyche after the Antioch Mint had been transferred to Laodicaea ad Mare as a punishment by the emperor. In order to understand why these depictions occurred so suddenly in our coinage records and what the motivations behind them might have been, I began my research. …
