Conservation Status Of The Threatened, Insular San Jose Brush Rabbit (Sylvilagus Mansuetus), Consuelo Lorenzo, Sergio Ticul Álvarez-Castañeda, Jorge Vázquez

Western North American Naturalist

The conservation status and distribution of the insular endemic San Jose brush rabbit (Sylvilagus mansuetus), as well as threats to its population viability, were determined through surveys undertaken since 1995 on San José Island in the Gulf of California, Mexico. Sylvilagus mansuetus is restricted to a specific desert habitat found in the southwestern coastal plains of the island. Vegetation in this habitat is composed primarily of 7 plant species. The extent of rabbit occurrence is only 20 km2, and the population density estimate in the most optimal habitat is 25–35 individuals · km–2. To …

Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Population Dynamics At Scotts Bluff National Monument, Nebraska: A 28-Year Record, Lloyd W. Morrison, David G. Peitz

Western North American Naturalist

Black-tailed prairie dogs, Cynomys ludovicianus, now inhabit a small fraction of their original range in the Great Plains. We monitored a population of black-tailed prairie dogs at Scotts Bluff National Monument, Nebraska, from colonization in 1981 until 2009 (28 years). Colony boundaries were mapped by delineating clip lines and active burrows; population densities were estimated via visual counts. Estimates of total population size revealed 4 distinct periods of changing dynamics: (1) a linear increase, (2) a decline and prolonged depression, (3) an exponential increase, and (4) a period of high variability. Area occupied revealed similar, although less-defined trends, whereas densities …

Occurrence Of Ord's Kangaroo Rat (Dipodomys Ordii) Along Its Eastern Distributional Limit In Nebraska, Greg D. Wright, Keith Geluso Apr 2011

Occurrence Of Ord's Kangaroo Rat (Dipodomys Ordii) Along Its Eastern Distributional Limit In Nebraska, Greg D. Wright, Keith Geluso

Western North American Naturalist

Changes in land use continue to alter habitats throughout Nebraska, and few studies have examined how such changes affect distributional limits of mammals. The distribution of Ord’s kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ordii) was last examined in eastern Nebraska about 4 decades ago. We examined the current eastern distributional limits ofD. ordii to see whether its range had expanded, contracted, or remained constant in the state since the 1960s. Based on our study, kangaroo rats have experienced little change in distribution during recent decades. Herein, we report on data for 8 counties without prior records and a marginal range …

Investigation Of The Chemical Causes Of Variations In The Infrared Reflectance Spectrum Of Chert, Emily Rebecca Hassler Apr 2011

Investigation Of The Chemical Causes Of Variations In The Infrared Reflectance Spectrum Of Chert, Emily Rebecca Hassler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In this project, differences in the reflectance infrared spectra of chert from ten different localities are investigated using reflectance infrared microspectroscopy (RIRMS). Several other techniques including X-ray diffraction, petrographic analysis, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, and transmission infrared spectroscopy, were used to assist in the identification of trace minerals existing in each chert. Spectral manipulation (including subtraction and differentiation) appear to allow the identification of trace minerals in the chert reflectance infrared spectra. Two statistical analyses (correlation and a ratio analysis) were used to evaluate whether RIRMS could discriminate between visually similar chert types and to determine the extent of intrasample …

Dealer: Dynamic Request Splitting For Performance-Sensitive Applications In Multi-Cloud Environments, Mohammad Hajjat, Shankaranarayanan Narayanan, David Maltz, Sanjay Rao, Kunwadee Sripanidkulchai

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Enterprises are increasingly deploying their applications
in the cloud given the cost-saving advantages,
and the potential to geo-distribute applications to ensure
resilience and better service experience. However,
a key unknown is whether it it is feasible to meet the
stringent response time requirements of enterprise applications
using the cloud. We make several contributions.
First, we show through empirical measurement
studies that (i) there is significant short-term variability
in application workload and response times of individual
components; however (ii) the response times
of the same component in different data-centers are often
uncorrelated. This leads us to argue that there are
potential …

Exploring The Challenges Of School Counseling: Voices From Rural Alaska, Christine Rojas Cook Apr 2011

Exploring The Challenges Of School Counseling: Voices From Rural Alaska, Christine Rojas Cook

Indigenous Studies

School counselors in rural locations deal with many of the same issues and concerns of those in most urban areas, but have several additional challenges due to the geographic and demographic characteristics of their populations. The research in this dissertation investigated the specific challenges experienced by school counselors in the state of Alaska. All school counselors working in a rural public school were surveyed to determine what challenges they experienced, what resources they utilize, what additional resources they would like, and to discuss any information they believed would be helpful for a counselor about to enter the rural school setting. …

Micromorphology, Site Spatial Variation And Patterning, And Climate Change At The Mead Site (Xbd-071): A Multi-Component Archaeological Site In Interior Alaska, Phoebe J. Gilbert Apr 2011

Micromorphology, Site Spatial Variation And Patterning, And Climate Change At The Mead Site (Xbd-071): A Multi-Component Archaeological Site In Interior Alaska, Phoebe J. Gilbert

Anthropology

The Mead Site, located in the Tanana River Valley in Interior Alaska, is a deeply buried archaeology site with multiple occupations and excellent preservation. The site provides a rare opportunity to study the human/climate relationship in prehistory. Magnetic susceptibility, micromorphology, geochemical and spatial analysis were utilized to (I) determine the amount of post-depositional disturbance at the site, (2) see if there are detectable buried surfaces that indicate cultural occupation in the upper sratigraphic layers and, (3) investigate the paleosols at the site and determine if the occupations at the site correlate with ameliorating climate. The results show that the upper …

Alaska Shorefast Ice: Interfacing Geophysics With Local Sea Ice Knowledge And Use, Matthew L. Druckenmiller Apr 2011

Alaska Shorefast Ice: Interfacing Geophysics With Local Sea Ice Knowledge And Use, Matthew L. Druckenmiller

Geosciences

This thesis interfaces geophysical techniques with local and traditional knowledge (LTK) of indigenous ice experts to track and evaluate coastal sea ice conditions over annual and inter-annual timescales. A novel approach is presented for consulting LTK alongside a systematic study of where, when, and how the community of Barrow, Alaska uses the ice cover. The goal of this research is to improve our understanding of and abilities to monitor the processes that govern the state and dynamics of shorefast sea ice in the Chukchi Sea and use of ice by the community. Shorefast ice stability and community strategies for safe …

Sources Of Variation In The Symbiotic Association Between Alnus And Frankia In Interior Alaska, Michael D. Anderson Apr 2011

Sources Of Variation In The Symbiotic Association Between Alnus And Frankia In Interior Alaska, Michael D. Anderson

Biological Sciences

Symbioses between plants and nitrogen (N) fixing bacteria are ecologically and economically important interactions with complex evolution and ecology. Theoretical and experimental studies suggest that host specificity and environmental variation are important determinants of both evolutionary and ecological patterns in such interactions, but detailed descriptions of these parameters in natural habitats are lacking for most N-fixing systems. The aim of this set of studies was to provide such information for the symbiosis between alder ( Alnus spp.) plants and Frankia bacteria in interior Alaska. Major objectives were to determine whether: 1) different Alnus species (A. tenuifolia and A. viridis ) …

Effects Of Glacial Discharge On Kelp Bed Organisms In An Alaskan Subarctic Estuary, Tania Marie Sparkland Apr 2011

Effects Of Glacial Discharge On Kelp Bed Organisms In An Alaskan Subarctic Estuary, Tania Marie Sparkland

Marine Biology

Global climate warming is having large-scale, pronounced effects on the physical environment of Arctic and subarctic nearshore marine ecosystems, such as the widespread melting of glaciers. The purpose of this study was to determine how changing environmental conditions due to glacial melting affect subarctic kelp bed community structure and organism fitness. This study compared kelp bed community structure under disparate environmental conditions on a glacially-influenced and an oceanic shore in the same subarctic Alaskan estuary. Laboratory tests assessed the effects of varying salinity and irradiance on growth and physiological competence (as maximum quantum yield ( Fv/Fm)) of the dominant kelp, …

Spiny dogfish is a valuable commodity on the world market and has a global capture distribution. There are three chapters evaluating dogfish markets and fisheries in this dissertation; Chapter 2 evaluates the spatial distribution of dogfish in the Gulf of Alaska; Chapter 3 provides an overview of world markets and evaluates conditions that have led to a decline in dogfish product demand in Europe; and Chapter 4 uses the information from the previous 2 chapters to provide and policy and market overview of dogfish fisheries in Alaska. Results from this study provide a comprehensive world overview of the modern dogfish …

Genetic And Phenotypic Divergence Within And Between Cinnamon Teal (Anas Cyanoptera) And Blue-Winged Teal (A. Discors), Robert E. Wilson Apr 2011

Genetic And Phenotypic Divergence Within And Between Cinnamon Teal (Anas Cyanoptera) And Blue-Winged Teal (A. Discors), Robert E. Wilson

Biological Sciences

Spatial heterogeneity in selection pressures can lead to extensive morphological variation and differences at functional genes between populations across a species' range without corresponding genetic variation at neutral loci. Divergent selection among populations may thus lead to intraspecific variation and in many cases speciation. Phenotypic and genetic structure within and between Cinnamon Teal (Anas cyanoptera) and the closely related Blue-winged Teal (A. discors) was assessed using body size measurements and neutral genetic markers in conjunction with a functional locus, hemoglobin. Cinnamon Teal are composed of five subspecies corresponding to distinct ecogeographic regions in North and South America. Subspecies and geographic …

Mechanisms Of Tropical Pacific Climate Change: Beyond The Bjerknes Feedback, Pedro N. Di Nezio Apr 2011

Mechanisms Of Tropical Pacific Climate Change: Beyond The Bjerknes Feedback, Pedro N. Di Nezio

Open Access Dissertations

Mechanisms of tropical Pacific climate variability and change are studied in numerical experiments of future anthropogenic global warming (AGW), the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) 21,000 years ago, and decadal variability (PDV). According to these mechanisms the equatorial Pacific does not become either El Niño- or La Niña-like as the tropics warm up in response to increasing greenhouse gases. Because humidity increases much faster than precipitation as the tropical atmosphere warms up, theory and models anticipate a slowing-down of the Walker circulation in order to keep a balanced flow of water vapor into areas of convection. On long time scales characteristic …

Geography and the Environment Poster Presentations
