Assessing The Authenticity Of The Document-Based Question Featured Within The New York State Global History And Geography Regents, Clinton Depew Dec 2011

Assessing The Authenticity Of The Document-Based Question Featured Within The New York State Global History And Geography Regents, Clinton Depew

Education Masters

This study questioned the validity of the Global History and Geography Regents exam DBQ as an authentic learning event and assessment. The previous five years of the Global History and Geography Regents DBQs administered in June were evaluated to assess the authenticity of the documents in regards to their context, the level of questioning featured in the task and constructed response questions, and the readability levels of the documents. Ultimately the analysis of the data disproved the validity of the DBQ as an authentic task as presented in the Global History and Geography Regents. In the end, teachers must infuse …

Lake Water Quality, Recreation, & Restoration: The Importance Of Stakeholder Involvement, Biran Gedlinske, Wade Kooiman, Katie Olsen Dec 2011

Lake Water Quality, Recreation, & Restoration: The Importance Of Stakeholder Involvement, Biran Gedlinske, Wade Kooiman, Katie Olsen

Other Faculty and Staff Publications

Historically, Iowa’s lakes have been plagued with numerous water quality problems including excessive siltation, nutrients, pesticides, and bacterial contamination. Iowa places a heavy reliance on voluntary efforts to address these problems, largely in the form of best management practices (BMPs). Studies have shown that BMPs can improve lake water quality and, in turn, increase recreational activity and visitor spending. In recognition of the potential economic, recreational, and social benefits of improved lake water quality, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) secured significant legislative funding in 2006 to initiate a state-wide lake restoration program (LRP).

LRP case studies are presented …

A "Narrow Exception" Run Amok: How Courts Have Misconstrued Employee-Rights Laws' Exclusion Of "Policymaking" Appointees, And A Proposed Framework For Getting Back On Track, Angela Galloway Dec 2011

A "Narrow Exception" Run Amok: How Courts Have Misconstrued Employee-Rights Laws' Exclusion Of "Policymaking" Appointees, And A Proposed Framework For Getting Back On Track, Angela Galloway

Washington Law Review

The civil rights and workplace protections afforded some government workers vary vastly nationwide because federal circuit courts disagree over how to interpret an exemption common to five landmark employment statutes. Each statute defines “employee” for its purposes to exclude politicians and certain categories of politicians’ appointees—including government employees appointed by elected officials to serve at “the policymaking level.” Neither Congress nor the United States Supreme Court has defined who belongs to the “policymaking-level” class. Consequently, lower federal courts across the country have adopted their own standards to fill the gap, creating a wide circuit split. At stake in this employment …

Stranger Than Fiction: An "Inside" Look At Environmental Liability And Defense Strategy In The Deepwater Horizon Aftermath, William H. Rodgers Jr., Jason Derosa, Sarah Reyneveld Dec 2011

Stranger Than Fiction: An "Inside" Look At Environmental Liability And Defense Strategy In The Deepwater Horizon Aftermath, William H. Rodgers Jr., Jason Derosa, Sarah Reyneveld

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill of April 20, 2010 initiated an environmental disaster that presented attorneys on both sides of the legal action with monumental challenges. Using the satirical format of a memo written by the corporate defense counsel to BP America four days after the spill began, this article investigates BP’s potential liability and strategic defense positions available in criminal and civil proceedings. Major federal environmental laws, including the Oil Pollution Act, the Clean Water Act and major wildlife protection statutes, are implicated by the Spill. The memo provides a clear picture of the existing opportunities for a responsible …

Developing A Marketing Plan Using Design Thinking, Rebecca L. Reilly

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

Design Thinking has become associated with some of the most innovative products coming out in the market today. Though it was originally a model used to design products, practitioners have found it also helps companies develop innovative mindsets throughout their organizations. This project takes Design Thinking in another direction, where it is not applied to something that already exists, but instead serves as the incubator for a marketing plan that will be used to convince small to medium-sized Western New York businesses to consider doing business in Korea. This project will give insight into how to use Design Thinking to …

Data-Intensive Computing For Bioinformatics Using Virtualization Technologies And Hpc Infrastructures, Pengfei Xuan Dec 2011

Data-Intensive Computing For Bioinformatics Using Virtualization Technologies And Hpc Infrastructures, Pengfei Xuan

All Theses

The bioinformatics applications often involve many computational components and massive data sets, which are very difficult to be deployed on a single computing machine. In this thesis, we designed a data-intensive computing platform for bioinformatics applications using virtualization technologies and high performance computing (HPC) infrastructures with the concept of multi-tier architecture, which can seamlessly integrate the web user interface (presentation tier), scientific workflow (logic tier) and computing infrastructure (data/computing tier). We demonstrated our platform on two bioinformatics projects. First, we redesigned and deployed the cotton marker database (CMD) (http://www.cottonmarker.org), a centralized web portal in the cotton research community, using the …

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the Puerto Rican experience has been marked by a situation of both Diaspora and cultural imperialism. In this contexts Puerto Rican writers and intellectuals have provided alternative visions of national and personal identity that could account for the existence of this deterritorialized nation. The dominant discourse regarding " Puerto Rican-ness" nurtured in the communities of origin, outside the mainland, a sense of nationhood defined by territorial and linguistic identity markers. The need for a new identity relies on the perceptible discomfort of territorializing a nation that, throughout massive migration, has established a circular …

Provenance And Weathering Of Holocene Ganges-Brahmaputra Sediments: Applications Of Sr Geochemistry To Late Quaternary Delta Evolution, Penny M. Paolo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The Ganges and Brahmaputra drainage systems make up one of the largest source-to-sink systems in the world. Together, the rivers carry >1Gt of sediment annually from the Himalayas to the continental margin where approximately two-thirds of this enormous load is presently sequestered to the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta (GBD), with the remaining third deposited on the Bengal Fan via the Swatch of No Ground canyon. There has been extensive work to characterize Himalayan lithologies and the sediments of the Bengal Fan, but surprisingly little focus on the geochemistry of deltaic deposits where the majority of sediments have been deposited in the Holocene. …

Live Cultures: Illness, Mortality, And Masculinity In Contemporary Spanish Film, Bobby D Allbritton Dec 2011

Live Cultures: Illness, Mortality, And Masculinity In Contemporary Spanish Film, Bobby D Allbritton

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Live Cultures" explores the ways that democratic Spain has been understood, written, and filmed as an ill kingdom, and how illness as bodily effect is an ontology that affects our understanding of our discrete selves. To consider illness a dark geography, as Sontag wrote in Illness as Metaphor, begs a continual re-interpretation of the relation of self, body and nation, an understanding of healthy or ill citizenship as it is inscribe into the body. This politicized inscription does not function alone but in tandem with gender, considering the ways that illness in its most base function operates some effect on …

Black, White And Green: High School Student Civil Rights And Environmental Activism In New York City And On Long Island, 1968-1975, Neil Philip Buffett

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation highlights the contributions of high school student activists in both the Civil Rights and Environmental Movements of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Through an in-depth analysis of various New York City and Long Island community case studies, the project sheds light on the importance of place as a theoretical concept in the evolution of student-led social and political activism. The project illustrates how student involvement in both the Civil Rights and Environmental Movements did or did not manifest in two contrasting suburban and urban settings. Moreover, it highlights how place as a construct in and of itself …

Health Disparities And Depression In Rural And Urban Older Adults., Jennifer Ann Zimmerman Dec 2011

Health Disparities And Depression In Rural And Urban Older Adults., Jennifer Ann Zimmerman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Depression is one of the most prevalent psychiatric conditions experienced by older adults and represents a major public health concern. Rural/urban residence may affect the prevalence of depression as rural older adults differ from their urban counterparts in many respects. One important difference found in the literature is that rural OAs are often faced with more health disparities (HDs) compared to their urban counterparts. The current study investigated the association between HDs and depression in a sample of rural and urban OAs, and examined whether HDs contribute to our understanding of how rurality impacts the prevalence and severity of depression. …

Exploring The Scholar-Practitioner Gap In Personnel Selection Assessments : An Analysis Of Scholarly Versus Practitioner Literature., Whitney L. Martin 1977- Dec 2011

Exploring The Scholar-Practitioner Gap In Personnel Selection Assessments : An Analysis Of Scholarly Versus Practitioner Literature., Whitney L. Martin 1977-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research suggests that a gap exists between scholarly findings and practitioner knowledge, beliefs, and practices in the Human Resource field, particularly in the area of employee selection (Deadrick & Gibson, 2007; Rynes, Giluk, & Brown, 2007). This study seeks to explore this gap relative to self-report selection assessments by examining practitioner-oriented versus scholarly literature. Articles published between January 2006 and September 2011 from two scholarly sources (Journal of Applied Psychology and Personnel Psychology) and two practitioner sources (HR Magazine and HR Executive) were reviewed, and 49 articles were selected for inclusion in analysis. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze …

Noir Ontology : Existing In The Fragmented Spaces Of Los Angeles., Jacob Andrew Goessling Dec 2011

Noir Ontology : Existing In The Fragmented Spaces Of Los Angeles., Jacob Andrew Goessling

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Noir Ontology: Existing in the Fragmented Urban Spaces of Los Angeles explores the role of decentered urban geography within the body of noir texts set within Los Angeles. By focusing on the development of the idea of Los Angeles in early to mid-Twentieth century literature and film, this essay argues that Alain Badiou's system of ontology provides a critical apparatus for investigating the many ways in which the Los Angeles sunshine myth organizes the relations between individuals within particular urban spaces. Through an analysis of the city's early cultural history, Roman Polanski and Robert Towne's film Chinatown, and Chester Himes's …

That Terrifying Center : Poetry, Language, And Embodied Subjectivities., Yalonda J. D. Green 1980-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

That Terrifying Center is a creative and philosophical experiment in the transmission of corporeal experiences and socio-cultural knowledge through poetry. I am bringing together the seemingly disparate threads of my studies into one creative-theoretical project: a collection of original poems exploring the development of multiple subjectivities, the terror of self-examination, and the scrutiny of memory; it is also a collection of poems that bear witness, that simply tell stories. These are poems that talk about what it's like to live in a body; they ask questions and translate answers related to becoming woman, demystifying fear, investigating genealogies of pain, and …

Aghoreshwar Bhagawan Ram And The Aghor Tradition, Jishnu Shankar Dec 2011

Aghoreshwar Bhagawan Ram And The Aghor Tradition, Jishnu Shankar

Anthropology - Dissertations

Aghoreshwar Mahaprabhu Baba Bhagawan Ram Ji, a well-established saint of the holy city of Varanasi in north India, initiated many changes into the erstwhile Aghor tradition of ascetics in India. This tradition is regarded as an ancient system of spiritual or mystical knowledge by its practitioners and at least some of the practices followed in this tradition can certainly be traced back at least to the time of the Buddha. Over the course of the centuries practitioners of this tradition have interacted with groups of other mystical traditions, exchanging ideas and practices so that both parties in the exchange appear …

Defending Tertullian's Orthodoxy: A Study On Third Century Christianity, Kevin Gift Dec 2011

Defending Tertullian's Orthodoxy: A Study On Third Century Christianity, Kevin Gift

Masters Theses

Scholars have attempted to place Tertullian into two or three distinct schools of thought. Some, such as Pope Benedict XVI, state that Tertullian turned his back on the church. Others, like Andrew McGowan, posit a more complex timeline. McGowan claims Tertullian left the church only to return at a later date. The reason for such speculation was Tertullian's interest in the Montanist, a second to third century heretical group. The goal of this study is to provide sufficient evidence that Tertullian never made the complete move to Montanism and never separated form the church of Carthage. A careful analysis of …

Modeling Access Mode Choice For Inter-Suburban Commuter Rail, Åsa Bergman, John Gliebe, James Strathman Dec 2011

Modeling Access Mode Choice For Inter-Suburban Commuter Rail, Åsa Bergman, John Gliebe, James Strathman

Journal of Public Transportation

This paper presents an analysis of access mode choice by riders of one of the first U.S. suburb-to-suburb commuter railroads, the Westside Express (WES), in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area. The study uses on-board survey data collected by the region’s transit agency, Tri-Met, during WES’s first year of operation. The data include observed access mode choices, historical mode usage, and subjective assessment of WES attributes. A hierarchical choice model was estimated, using attributes of the access trip, station areas and rider characteristics. The estimation results revealed pre-WES-mode inertia effects in choosing drive access, pro-sustainability attitudes in choosing bike access, the …

A Health Impact Assessment Of Mixed Use Redevelopment Nodes And Corridors In Lincoln, Nebraska, Katie Clear

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Obesity is a growing threat to America’s health. The national rate of obesity is 34% (Health Consequences, 2011), and Lincoln, Nebraska is not far behind that trend at 20.7% (BRFSS, 2011). Increasing physical activity is one way to reduce weight gain, (Edwards, 2008) and further studies show that small changes to the built environment can induce people to use alternative and more active forms of transportation such as biking, walking, and public transportation (Edwards, 2008; Zheng, 2008). The 2040 Comprehensive Plan for Lincoln, NE includes language to create a more walkable community. The proposal is to redevelop existing areas within …

The Changing Geography And Fortunes Of Dublin Haute Cuisine Restaurants, 1958-2008, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire

Articles

This paper considers the changing geography and fortunes of Dublin’s haute cuisine restaurants over the last half century, placing them within both a national and international context. Ireland’s place within the global story of food is discussed, and the paper illustrates links between Dublin and European and global trends. The paper points out that Dublin in the 1950s could be seen as the gastronomic capital of the British Isles. The leading restaurateurs are briefly profiled, and the decline, stagnation, and gradual re-birth of Dublin’s haute cuisine restaurants over the 1958-2008 period is charted and discussed. The paper combines data from …

Slaves, Trains, And Missionaries: British Moral Imperialism And The Development Of Precolonial East Africa, 1873-1901, Daniel Woulfin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation explores the role of moral imperialism in the late nineteenth century expansion of the British Empire using East Africa as a case study. Moral imperialism, the ideology that argued that the British had a moral duty to "civilize, "Christianize, "uplift, and economically "develop" non-Europeans and their territories, has not been taken as seriously by historians as other factors for British expansion, namely economic arguments and strategic geopolitics by British officials. By applying Alan Lester's model of three categories of colonial discourse in nineteenth century South Africa: governmentality, humanitarianism, and settler capitalism to East Africa between 1873 and 1901, …
