Event Perception, Gabriel A. Radvansky, Jeffrey M. Zacks Nov 2011

Event Perception, Gabriel A. Radvansky, Jeffrey M. Zacks

Psychological & Brain Sciences Faculty Research

Events are central elements of human experience. Formally, they can be individuated in terms of the entities that compose them, the features of those entities, and the relations amongst entities. Psychologically, representations of events capture their spatiotemporal location, the people and objects involved, and the relations between these elements. Here, we present an account of the nature of psychological representations of events and how they are constructed and updated. Event representations are like images in that they are isomorphic to the situations they represent. However, they are like models or language in that they are constructed of components rather than …

Confidentiality Preserving Security Properties For Cyber-Physical Systems, Thoshitha T. Gamage, Thomas P. Roth, Bruce M. Mcmillin Nov 2011

Confidentiality Preserving Security Properties For Cyber-Physical Systems, Thoshitha T. Gamage, Thomas P. Roth, Bruce M. Mcmillin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The work in this paper presents recent advances in developing a theory of information flow security specifically geared towards preserving the event confidentiality in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs). Preserving the confidentiality of sensitive internal actions is a unique challenge in CPSs due to the inherent external observability of such systems and the tight coupling between their cyber and physical domains. the far-reaching objective of this work is to develop a science of self-obfuscating systems based on the composition of simple building blocks. a model of Nondeducibility composes the building blocks under information flow security properties. to this end, this work presents …

The Association Between Parity, Infant Gender, Higher Level Of Paternal Education And Preterm Birth In Pakistan: A Cohort Study, Kiran Shaikh, Shahirose Sadrudin Premji, Marianne S. Rose, Ambreen Kazi, Shaneela Khowaja, Suzanne Tough Nov 2011

The Association Between Parity, Infant Gender, Higher Level Of Paternal Education And Preterm Birth In Pakistan: A Cohort Study, Kiran Shaikh, Shahirose Sadrudin Premji, Marianne S. Rose, Ambreen Kazi, Shaneela Khowaja, Suzanne Tough

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Background:

High rates of antenatal depression and preterm birth have been reported in Pakistan. Self reported maternal stress and depression have been associated with preterm birth, however findings are inconsistent. Cortisol is a biological marker of stress and depression, and its measurement may assist in understanding the influence of self reported maternal stress and depression on preterm birth.

Methods:

In a prospective cohort study pregnant women between 28 to 30 weeks of gestation from the Aga Khan Hospital for Women and Children completed the A-Z Stress Scale and the Centre for Epidemiology Studies Depression Scale to assess stress and depression …

Disputes Over Water Resources: A History Of Conflict And Cooperation In Drainage Basins, Shavkat Kasymov Nov 2011

Disputes Over Water Resources: A History Of Conflict And Cooperation In Drainage Basins, Shavkat Kasymov

Peace and Conflict Studies

This paper presents the analysis of conflict history over freshwater in several drainage basins across the planet. As will be demonstrated in this paper, unilateral water policies have proved to reduce the role and prospect of water treaties and international water sharing regimes, and led to political tensions and conflicts. The main argument of the essay is that unilateral diversions of water flows will instigate wars between riparian states because of the rising demand for freshwater in the future. Unilateral practices of water diversion create a situation of inequitable distribution of water among nation-states within a basin which is a …

Political Risk And Sovereign Debt Contracts, Eric A. Posner, Stephen J. Choi, G. Mitu Gulati Nov 2011

Political Risk And Sovereign Debt Contracts, Eric A. Posner, Stephen J. Choi, G. Mitu Gulati

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Default on sovereign debt is a form of political risk. Issuers and creditors have responded to this risk both by strengthening the terms in sovereign debt contracts that enable creditors to enforce their debts judicially and by creating terms that enable sovereigns to restructure their debts. These apparently contradictory approaches reflect attempts to solve an incomplete contracting problem in which debtors need to be forced to repay debts in good states of the world; debtors need to be granted partial relief from debt payments in bad states; debtors may attempt to exploit divisions among creditors in order to opportunistically reduce …

Sorting Through The Junk Box: Dickens's Objects And The Great Exhibition Of 1851, Audrey Raymi Grounds Nov 2011

Sorting Through The Junk Box: Dickens's Objects And The Great Exhibition Of 1851, Audrey Raymi Grounds

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In Bleak House , Dickens satirizes contemporary conditions in London in order to diagnose what he sees as social and industrial ills to prescribe a solution to the "Condition-of-England" question. Beginning with a review of the topicality in the novel, I use Dickens's personal letters, the text of Bleak House , and articles from Household Words to explain his contempt with the Great Exhibition, misguided philanthropy, and sanitary conditions, among others. Ultimately, it is his anathema to the Great Exhibition which drives both Dickens's plot and the issues he explores. Dickens's mockery of England is refracted and emphasized through his …

Development And Initial Validation Of The Managerial Success Factors Inventory: Transportation Version (Msfi: Tv), Michael Robert Durr Ii Nov 2011

Development And Initial Validation Of The Managerial Success Factors Inventory: Transportation Version (Msfi: Tv), Michael Robert Durr Ii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop and initially validate the Managerial Success Factors Inventory: Transportation Version (MSFI: TV), a scale generated to more accurately assess managerial competence in transportation than general managerial competence and leadership scales. The literature on managerial competencies, leadership, and the state of transportation management is summarized. Reigning models of general managerial competency were used with focus group and cognitive interview data to develop the scale. The conventional three-phase scale development research design was followed (exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and validation phases) by administering the instrument to a sample of 287 managers from …

Efficient Breach Of International Law: Optimal Remedies, 'Legalized Noncompliance,' And Related Issues, Eric A. Posner, Alan O. Sykes Nov 2011

Efficient Breach Of International Law: Optimal Remedies, 'Legalized Noncompliance,' And Related Issues, Eric A. Posner, Alan O. Sykes

Michigan Law Review

In much of the scholarly literature on international law, there is a tendency to condemn violations of the law and to leave it at that. If all violations of international law were indeed undesirable, this tendency would be unobjectionable. We argue in this Article, however that a variety of circumstances arise under which violations of international law are desirable from an economic standpoint. The reasons why are much the same as the reasons why nonperformance of private contracts is sometimes desirable- the concept of "efficient breach," familiar to modern students of contract law, has direct applicability to international law. As …

Policy Briefs and Reports

This proposal will provide statistical context of the overall performance of English Language Learner (ELL) students in Clark County School District (CCSD) and proposes a study that will assist the CCSD in identifying programs and strategies that increase ELL student performance on the third grade State mandated Criterion Reference Test (SMCRT) in reading and mathematics. To accomplish this goal, the proposed research project will first identify teaching methodologies, curricular strategies and support services that CCSD teachers are employing to assist ELL students in achieving satisfactory performance. These factors will be analyzed in comparison to SMCRT scores to determine the relative …

Contending With Foreign Accent Variability In Early Lexical Acquisition., Rachel Schmale, George Hollich, Amanda Seidl Nov 2011

Contending With Foreign Accent Variability In Early Lexical Acquisition., Rachel Schmale, George Hollich, Amanda Seidl

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

By their second birthday, children are beginning to map meaning to form with relative ease. One challenge for these developing abilities is separating information relevant to word identity (i.e. phonemic information) from irrelevant information (e.g. voice and foreign accent). Nevertheless, little is known about toddlers’ abilities to ignore irrelevant phonetic detail when faced with the demanding task of word learning. In an experiment with English-learning toddlers, we examined the impact of foreign accent on word learning. Findings revealed that while toddlers aged 2; 6 successfully generalized newly learned words spoken by a Spanish-accented speaker and a native English speaker, success …

Price Points And Price Rigidity, Daniel Levy, Dongwon Lee, Haipeng (Allen) Lee, Robert J. Kauffman, Mark Bergen Nov 2011

Price Points And Price Rigidity, Daniel Levy, Dongwon Lee, Haipeng (Allen) Lee, Robert J. Kauffman, Mark Bergen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We study the link between price points and price rigidity using two data sets: weekly scanner data and Internet data. We find that ‘‘9’’ is the most frequent ending for the penny, dime, dollar, and ten-dollar digits; the most common price changes are those that keep the price endings at ‘‘9’’; 9-ending prices are less likely to change than non-9-ending prices; and the average size of price change is larger for 9-ending than non-9- ending prices. We conclude that 9-ending contributes to price rigidity from penny to dollar digits and across a wide range of product categories, retail formats, and …
