Effects Of A Smoke-Free Law In Parks And Beaches On Smoking Behaviour: Methods To Determine Effectiveness, Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli, Andrew Johnson, Amanda Fallin, Ann Pederson, Anna Liwander

Nursing Presentations

As part of a comprehensive approach to tobacco control, smoke free laws have resulted in reductions of indoor air pollution, improvements in respiratory and cardiovascular health, reduction of smoking uptake by youth, and increasing tobacco use cessation in various jurisdictions. Although many studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of smoke-free policies in indoor spaces (e.g., restaurants, bars, workplaces, hospital settings, etc.), little is known about the effectiveness of such policies in outdoor public spaces. On September 1st, 2010, Vancouver’s smoke-free by-law for the city’s parks, beaches, and facilities came into effect. The aims of this study are two-fold: a) to examine …

Mechanisms Of The Contextual Interference Effect In Individuals Poststroke, Nicolas Schweughofer, Jeong-Yoon Lee, Hui-Ting Goh, Youggeun Choi, Sung Shin Kim, Jill Campbell Stewart Pt,Phd, Rebecca Lewthwaite, Carolee J. Winstein

Faculty Publications

Although intermixing different motor learning tasks via random schedules enhances long-term retention compared with “blocked” schedules, the mechanism underlying this contextual interference effect has been unclear. Furthermore, previous studies have reported inconclusive results in individuals poststroke. We instructed participants to learn to produce three grip force patterns in either random or blocked schedules and measured the contextual interference effect by long-term forgetting: the change in performance between immediate and 24-h posttests. Nondisabled participants exhibited the contextual interference effect: no forgetting in the random condition but forgetting in the blocked condition. Participants at least 3 mo poststroke exhibited no forgetting in …

Forecasting Bond Risk Premia Using Technical Analysis, Choo Yong, Jeremy Goh, Fuwei Jiang, Jun Tu, Guofu Zhou Nov 2011

Forecasting Bond Risk Premia Using Technical Analysis, Choo Yong, Jeremy Goh, Fuwei Jiang, Jun Tu, Guofu Zhou

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

While economic variables have been used extensively to forecast the U.S. bond risk premia, little attention has been paid to the use of technical indicators which are widely employed by practitioners. In this paper, we fill this gap by studying the predictive ability of using a variety of technical indicators vis-a-vis the economic variables. We find that the technical indicators have statistically and economically significant in- and out-of-sample forecasting power. Moreover, we find that utilizing information from both technical indicators and economic variables substantially increases the forecasting performances relative to using just economic variables.

Singapore's Venture Into The Gulf: Undiscovered Treasure Or Empty Pot?, Caroline Yeoh, Wilfred How, Joses Wong Nov 2011

Singapore's Venture Into The Gulf: Undiscovered Treasure Or Empty Pot?, Caroline Yeoh, Wilfred How, Joses Wong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Singapore: a country synonymous with business efficiency, strict laws and a reputation that belies its miniscule size. Its state-enterprise network and attempts at grafting “Singapore-styled” investment enclaves onto foreign locales often receive attention from the international community. These state-engineered projects are premised on the exportability of Singapore’s state credibility, systemic and operational efficiencies as well as the technological competencies of Singapore companies, to locations where these attributes are less distinct. This paper, as part of our series on this topic, revisits the city-state’s determined efforts to encapsulate economic space for Singapore-based firms, enabling them to expand beyond the region. This …

The Teaching Of Pragmatics As Interpreter Training, Annette Sachtleben, Heather Denny Nov 2011

The Teaching Of Pragmatics As Interpreter Training, Annette Sachtleben, Heather Denny

International Journal of Interpreter Education

Research undertaken in 2010 with an interpreting class at a New Zealand university showed that explicit teaching of pragmatic features of New Zealand English discourse helped develop the students’ awareness of the differences between the semantic meaning and the pragmatic purpose of an utterance.

In this research project, the authors intended to test whether explicit classroom instruction of pragmatic features and these features’ impact on meaning through the use of recorded discourse samples would be effective, considering that explicit language instruction to language learners has been researched and was found to assist success (Kasper & Roever, 2004). In the classroom, …

Greek Debt And American Debt: Graduation Speech At The University Of Athens Economics And Business School, John Geanakoplos Nov 2011

Greek Debt And American Debt: Graduation Speech At The University Of Athens Economics And Business School, John Geanakoplos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This is the graduation speech I gave on receiving an honorary doctorate at the University of Athens Economics and Business School. I talk about my Greek family, about how I got interested in economics, and then how in the 1990s I came to think about default, collateral, and leverage as the central features of the financial/macro economy, despite their complete absence (even now) from any textbooks. Finally I suggest that the Greek debt problem, and on a bigger scale, the American debt problem, can only be cured when lenders are prodded to forgive. That would be better for the borrowers …

This discussion, therefore, intends to shed light on the US sports gaming legal framework, including analysis of the preeminent US laws that regulate the sports gaming industry and a brief review of various sports gaming businesses that fall within the US legal rubric.

The process of acquiring a Nevada gaming license is long and consists of several procedures. Although the process is time-consuming, it is far from Byzantine or obscure; each step, as defined by statute and precedent, flows logically from the one before. This paper provides an overview of licensing process in Nevada, with additional information on the reasoning behind several of the procedures involved.

Observing Park Environments In Nevada (Open), Monica A.F. Lounsbery Nov 2011

Observing Park Environments In Nevada (Open), Monica A.F. Lounsbery

Policy Briefs and Reports

Sedentary living is a major public health challenge. Community parks are important locations for population physical activity, especially for low-income families, children, and seniors. Parks, however, are seldom viewed as health resources and/or assessed relative to opportunities for physical activity they provide. Physical activity studies have not been conducted in Nevada parks; therefore, their health impacts have not been translated into local government leisure services. The purposes of this in progress study are (a) assess park/trail users and characteristics, (b) identify park/trail characteristics associated with use and physical activity, and (c) examine resident profiles, perceptions, and use of park/trail environments.

Applications With A Radiation Pattern In The Horizontal Direction, Sudarshan Reddy Tippi Reddy Nov 2011

Applications With A Radiation Pattern In The Horizontal Direction, Sudarshan Reddy Tippi Reddy

Electrical Engineering Theses

Antennas play a vital role in communication systems by radiating and receiving signals of interest. There are various structural types of antennas differentiated by their individual properties such as: the directivity, the power transmitted and the gain. One of these types of antennas with special properties is the microstrip antenna. There are multiple applications for microstrip antennas in wireless communication, due to its small form factor and geometrical shape. A design for a microstrip antenna in which the radiation is spread along the horizontal axis is proposed. Several antenna configurations were considered for the design, and their radiation patterns were …

Climate Change And The Conservation Of Archaeological Sites: A Review Of Impacts Theory, Caithleen Daly Nov 2011

Climate Change And The Conservation Of Archaeological Sites: A Review Of Impacts Theory, Caithleen Daly

Articles

This article identifies the current state of knowledge in the literature regarding the possible impacts of future climatic change on archaeological sites and ensembles. Drawing on the literature review a matrix of potential impacts is collated to provide a simplified overview. This theoretical ‘menu’ is then tested by applying it to a vulnerability assessment of the World Heritage site of Skellig Michael in Ireland. The case study results reveal some knowledge gaps, particularly in regard to the impacts of climate change on buried archaeological remains.

Reading Aloud And Student Achievement, Rebecka R. Spencer Nov 2011

Reading Aloud And Student Achievement, Rebecka R. Spencer

Dissertations

Although numerous studies have been conducted on reading aloud to elementary students, there is a need for additional research in reading aloud to middle school students. The main question is: are the benefits of reading aloud to elementary students comparable to middle school students? Reading aloud has proven to increase elementary students‘ comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, motivation, and encourage students‘ understanding of content matter. While reading aloud is a common practice among elementary teachers and students, the practice all but diminishes by middle school (Delo, 2008; Trelease, 2006). This mixed method study was conducted in three public school districts in Missouri …

Hyphenated Identities As A Challenge To Nation-State School Practice?, Edmund T. Hamann, William England Nov 2011

Hyphenated Identities As A Challenge To Nation-State School Practice?, Edmund T. Hamann, William England

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This chapter concludes the edited volume Hyphenated Identities and affords a chance to juxtapose how transnational students negotiate school and identity with how school systems in turn view such students, and then it allows the examination of two different strategies -- situational ethnicity versus the assertion of hyphenated identity -- as a glimpse into the cosmology of transnationally mobile students as they come into adulthood.
