Delight In Architecture, Molly Bausman Jan 2011

Delight In Architecture, Molly Bausman

Architecture Theses

This project explores delight in buildings and how we experience them. It states that the personality of a building as exhibited in individual traits is what we find delight in, as humans tend to personify things they interact with. It further argues that through the complexity of traits and their interactions there is the potential for continued discovery and delight. The project is located in Chicago, Illinois and will be a transit hub including an ‘L’ stop, commuter rail terminus and a high speed intercity rail system.

Reusing Structure, Mark Cameron Jan 2011

Reusing Structure, Mark Cameron

Architecture Theses

This thesis attempts to understand how built structures can evolve over time through use and reuse. It looks at how reusing a space is possible by taking a warehouse structure and reusing it for the new purpose of living space. Many cities are attempting to perform historic preservations as the cities age, such as a historic town like Duluth, which was founded with trading, was transformed into a mining town and now has multiple colleges. This project is setting out to better understand how a building can grow with the city’s new images. Buildings evolve as users act upon them. …

Test Of Time, Lane Kleist Jan 2011

Test Of Time, Lane Kleist

Architecture Theses

This thesis is a study of how the use of recycled materials can express the passage of time within a society or culture. The building typology for the execution of this idea is a historical museum. The Theoretical Premise/Unifying Idea which influences this study is that the history of a material can be studied and interpreted and used to influence a new use. Using recycled materials decreases the use of valuable resources and provides a rich history of our ancestors which justifies this research.

Trade, Time, And The Calculus Of Risk In Early Pacific Travel Writing, Michelle Burnham Jan 2011

Trade, Time, And The Calculus Of Risk In Early Pacific Travel Writing, Michelle Burnham

English

In the 2005 Common-place issue on early America and the Pacific, historians Edward Gray and Alan Taylor observe that the Atlantic studies paradigm, which moves "beyond nations and states as the defining subjects of historical understanding, turning instead to large scale processes" is also particularly "useful for understanding Pacific history" since "dis- ease, migration, trade, and war effected [sic] the Pacific in much the way they effected [sic] the Atlantic." A similar transfer of the Atlantic world model to the Pacific informs David Igler s insistence that, like the Atlantic, the Pacific world was "international before it became national."1 Igler …

The Human Animal : Posthumanism In John Steinbeck's Cannery Row, Cece Rohwedder Jan 2011

The Human Animal : Posthumanism In John Steinbeck's Cannery Row, Cece Rohwedder

English

In this paper, I examine John Steinbeck's Cannery Row on the basis of the posthuman vision that courses through it, as it does through many of Steinbeck's works. I propose that Steinbeck presents human and animal worlds that intermingle, mimic, and sustain one another; what Steinbeck described as non-teleological may justifiably be considered posthuman. In Cannery Row, people of various social positionings and mental capacities are presented plainly and matter-of-factly, without even a hint at causation or judgment of their character, abilities, behaviors, morals, or actions. The novel is grounded in a vision of close inter-species connections in which humans …

An Exploratory Study On International Students' Adjustment To American Universities., Grace M. Atebe Jan 2011

An Exploratory Study On International Students' Adjustment To American Universities., Grace M. Atebe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

College students in the twenty-first century face a different political, economic, cultural, and social world than students faced in the previous century. Technology and business have broken down virtually every barrier between countries. As a result, many colleges believe that they must educate and involve their students in cultures beyond their country's borders in the hope of producing inter-culturally competent students. Despite government policies and available financial assistance that encourage study abroad, the vast majority of students in Western countries do not study outside their own borders. Thus, successful integration of international students and scholars with the campus and its …

Deconstructing Disparity: Examining Risk Factors Related To Smoking Among Sexual Minority Populations., John Rudolph Blosnich Jan 2011

Deconstructing Disparity: Examining Risk Factors Related To Smoking Among Sexual Minority Populations., John Rudolph Blosnich

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Despite a robust, concordant literature demonstrating that lesbian, gay, and bisexual (i.e., sexual minority) populations smoke more than their heterosexual peers, the factors contributing to this disparity are not well understood. Consequently, the main goal of this project and its three component studies was to enhance current understanding of risk factors that contribute to smoking disparities among sexual minority persons. Study 1 details a systematic review of the literature, synthesizing empirical investigations that tested associations of risk factors and correlates of smoking among sexual minority samples. Of the twenty-six studies included in the analysis, most used sexual identity to operationalize …

Toward A New Understanding Of Esl Students In The Composition Classroom, Vladimira Duka

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this Master's thesis was to investigate the ways in which Composition teachers in U.S. English departments should revisit their teaching practices for native English speakers and the speakers of English as a second language likewise. The recent need for this shift in teaching practices was stressed in the thesis. Particularly, I examined how Composition teachers should reconfigure their teaching practices to redefine the standards of written English. The study aimed to demonstrate that a changing definition of the standards of written English impacted all the classroom participants, particularly diverse learners in various ways. Specifically, how a modified …

Automated Discovery Of Relevant Features For Text Mining, Rukmini Ravali Kota

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Text mining refers to the process of extracting information from text. There are massive amounts of data available today due to enhanced data collection capabilities, inexpensive high capacity storage, and the proliferation of World Wide Web pages. A substantial portion of this data is in text format. The main goal of text data mining software tools is to help us learn and benefit from this wealth of text data. Humans cannot cope with the overwhelming text data resources. The information in text data needs to be filtered, summarized, analyzed, and refined for human analysts.;A semantic signature is the concept that …

A Dutch Woman In An English World: The Legacy Of Alida Livingston Of New York, Melinda M. Mohler Jan 2011

A Dutch Woman In An English World: The Legacy Of Alida Livingston Of New York, Melinda M. Mohler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In 1674, at the conclusion of the Third Dutch War, the Treaty of Westminster placed the Dutch New Netherlands permanently under English control. For the many businesswomen of Dutch heritage who resided in the New Netherlands during the late seventeenth century, this shift in colonial power resulted in a drastic loss of economic freedom and, in many cases, brought an end to their public business ventures. As Dutch businesswomen increasingly retreated from the public sphere, their need to document daily activities dwindled and records of their personal lives all but disappeared. A study of the correspondence of Alida Schuyler Livingston …

Department Chairs' Perceptions Of Part-Time Faculty Status In Maryland Public And Private Higher Education Institutions, Daniel L. Moorehead Jan 2011

Department Chairs' Perceptions Of Part-Time Faculty Status In Maryland Public And Private Higher Education Institutions, Daniel L. Moorehead

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The growing use of part-time, non-tenure track faculty in higher education has become a nationwide phenomenon. The college-teaching part-time instructor is one who is working for low pay, has little job security, and has few benefits. College part-time instructors' employment is in a contingent state. They do not have the job protection provided to tenured professors because they are usually hired for only the upcoming term with no guarantee of being hired for any future terms.;The purpose of this study was to describe the status of part-time faculty in Maryland public and private four-year colleges and universities as perceived by …

A Comparison Of White-Collar Offenders And Non-White-Collar Offenders On The Psychological Variables Of Personality, Criminal Thinking, And Psychopathy, Laurie Ragatz

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The first purpose of this study was to replicate Walters and Geyer (2004) by examining how white-collar offenders differ from non-white-collar offenders on criminal thinking styles and lifestyle criminality. The second purpose was to examine the psychopathic characteristics of white-collar offenders in comparison to non-white-collar offenders. The third purpose was to explore the psychopathology of white-collar offenders compared to non-white-collar offenders. The study sample included 48 white-collar only offenders (offenders that only committed white-collar crime), 89 white-collar versatile offenders (offenders that have previously committed non-white-collar crime), and 89 non-white-collar offenders. Groups were matched on age and ethnicity. All participants completed …

An American "Duchess" In Disguise: John Singleton Copley's Turquerie Portrait Of Margaret Kemble Gage, Elizabeth Rininger Jan 2011

An American "Duchess" In Disguise: John Singleton Copley's Turquerie Portrait Of Margaret Kemble Gage, Elizabeth Rininger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A number of portraits that John Singleton Copley painted in the years prior to the American Revolution show women clad in turquerie. Traditionally, art historians have explained the appearance of this fashion as provincial colonials copying fashions from their parent country. The appeal of the fashion was strong; however, the political, social, and sexual connotations complicate this explanation for the sitters' choice of dress. While the purpose here is not to disprove the explanation of fashion-consciousness, it is to read these portraits from the perspective of the colonized rather than the colonizer. It is an attempt to decode an appropriated …

Beyond Protest: Ethics Of Reconciliation In Post-Apartheid South African White Writing, Sohinee Roy Jan 2011

Beyond Protest: Ethics Of Reconciliation In Post-Apartheid South African White Writing, Sohinee Roy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Beyond Protest: Ethics of Reconciliation in Post-Apartheid South African White Writing examines the politics and poetics of reconciliation in South Africa by comparing the defining (or, at least the initiating) document the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report (TRC) with the ways in which concepts of "racial harmony" are presented in the post-apartheid novels of white authors like J.M.Coetzee, Nadine Gordimer, Antje Krog, and Andre Brink. South Africa's complex racial history dating back to the colonial times, the consequent internalization of imposed racial identities within resistance movements, and the institutionalization of racist practices through state policies mean that its effort to …

Life Cycle Analysis Of Forest Carbon In The Central Appalachian Region, Pradip Saud Jan 2011

Life Cycle Analysis Of Forest Carbon In The Central Appalachian Region, Pradip Saud

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Forest management and wood product processing activities such as harvesting, transportation, and lumber processing consume fossil fuels and emit carbon dioxide. This emitted carbon dioxide creates credit carbon balance which is usually overlooked while estimating the carbon benefits from woody biomass and wood products. Accountability of carbon stored in woody biomass and wood products varies when such carbon emissions are considered. Factors such as, harvesting intensity, growth rate, dead trees and forest fires all affected the estimation of forest carbon balance while harvesting system determines the carbon emission from fossil fuel consumptions. Energy sources used in sawmills for electricity are …

Where Have All The Women Combatants Gone? The Realities Of Soviet Female Veterans In The Immediate Post World War Two Period, Jekaterina Tsizikova Jan 2011

Where Have All The Women Combatants Gone? The Realities Of Soviet Female Veterans In The Immediate Post World War Two Period, Jekaterina Tsizikova

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Relying on numerous testimonies of Soviet women combatants, this thesis demonstrates the wartime and post-war realities of Soviet women soldiers. About a million of women combatants took an active part in the war, yet they remained in the shadow of the Great Victory of 1945. This paper explores the unwillingness of the Soviet state to recognize the contribution of Soviet women combatants in the fighting of the Second World War. Why did the myth of the Great Patriotic War exclude women? Why were some women soldiers more worthy of recognition than others? What, compared to female veterans, was the status …

Electrochemical And Microstructural Analysis Of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Electrodes, Mingjia Zhi Jan 2011

Electrochemical And Microstructural Analysis Of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Electrodes, Mingjia Zhi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fuel cells offer several advantages over conventional routines of power generation, such as substantially higher conversion efficiency, modular construction, minimal sitting restriction, and much lower production of pollutants. Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), in principle, can utilize all kinds of combustion fuels including coal derived syngas (CSG). The U.S. Department of Energy is currently working on coupling coal gasification and SOFC to form Integrated Gasification Fuel Cell (IGFC) systems. Such IGFC systems will enable the clean, efficient and cost-effective use of coal---the nation's most abundant fossil fuel.;However several issues need to be considered before SOFC can be really commercialized. The …

Modeling Approach Motivation In Terms Of Perceptual Biases Involving Appetitive Stimuli, Scott Byrum Ode Jan 2011

Modeling Approach Motivation In Terms Of Perceptual Biases Involving Appetitive Stimuli, Scott Byrum Ode

Psychology

Accumulating evidence suggests a potential relationship between approach motivation and perceptual enhancement. The current investigation was undertaken with the goal of exploring the causes of the phenomenon as well as implications for personality. Below, a model is introduced to help explain the causes and consequences of relations between approach motivation and perceptual size. Two studies are then presented testing a number of assumptions made by the model. In Study 1 (n = 78), state-related variations in approach motivation were manipulated with the intent of sensitizing the perceptual system to appetitive stimuli. It was predicted that such sensitization would result in …

Results. The development and execution of a strategy for the formation of a shared, biblical vision …

Impact Of Rogun Dam On Downstream Uzbekistan Agriculture, Shokhrukh-Mirzo Jalilov Jan 2011

Impact Of Rogun Dam On Downstream Uzbekistan Agriculture, Shokhrukh-Mirzo Jalilov

Natural Resources Management

Strains among the states of Central Asia caused by overuse of the region’s scarce water resources have been increasing in recent years. This is especially true for the relations between Tajikistan, upstream, and Uzbekistan, downstream, on the Amudarya River. Major controversy exists over constructing Rogun Dam on the Vakhsh River, a tributary of the Amudarya River. Construction of Rogun Dam, with a planned height of 335 m (1099 ft), began in 1976 but was stopped in 1991 with the breakup of the former Soviet Union. The intent of this dam is to supply Tajikistan with energy, but a side effect …

Problem. There are many members in the Hillsboro Seventh-day Adventist Church who do not attend the weekly worship service on a regular basis. More than half of the members on the books are inactive. For the last 5 years, attendance at the Hillsboro Church has declined. The present study determined the impact of a visitation program on church attendance. In the program attending church members visited inactive members.

Method. Theological considerations on the importance of the involvement of church members in visitation led to the development of a visitation program. This program was implemented at the Hillsboro Church and evaluated …

"Building A Class Library": Emphasizing Summary In Teaching Source Use, Niles Andrew Haich Jan 2011

"Building A Class Library": Emphasizing Summary In Teaching Source Use, Niles Andrew Haich

English

The study presented here is a qualitative study evaluating four objectives for teaching source use, ones I emphasized in my Spring 2011 classes with an assignment called the "Building a Class Library Assignment." I relied on two methods for evaluation: (1) process reflection, with audio recordings of one-on-one sessions serving as my data set; and (2) product analysis, with student-written profiles serving as my data set. In analyzing the profiles, as well as the interviews, it became obvious that my students fell short in the areas I wanted them to demonstrate an understanding in. However, it also became obvious that, …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Livingstons of Liberty Hall: Changes and Restrictions of Gender in Eighteenth- Century America explore issues of masculinity and femininity during the settlement of New York and New Jersey through the American Revolution. In it, theories relating to social order, economics and law are explored as they pertain to three generations of the Livingston family. Ideas regarding class and cultural diffusion, as well as the transformation of British colonial subjects to American citizens are seen through the education, lives and changes experienced by the Livingston family. Each Livingston son and daughter reacted and participated to the war and the changes …
