Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Bias in terms of culture has been posing threat to cross-cultural research since the very beginning of crosscultural endeavor. Metric and statistical methods have been discussed in literature in order to deal with this type of bias; however, some of these methods show side-effects on the level of scale validity and some others with so stringent effects on the available information and allow for very limited variance to be interpreted. The present twofold study describes yet another method, this time based on country clusters, following the idea introduced by Georgas & Berry (1995) of employing country sets based on their …

Contextual Ontology Alignment Of Lod With An Upper Ontology: A Case Study With Proton, Prateek Jain, Peter Z. Yeh, Kunal Verma, Reymonrod G. Vasquez, Mariana Darnorva, Pascal Hitzler, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The Linked Open Data (LOD) is a major milestone towards realizing the Semantic Web vision, and can enable applications such as robust Question Answering (QA) systems that can answer queries requiring multiple, disparate information sources. However, realizing these applications requires relationships at both the schema and instance level, but currently the LOD only provides relationships for the latter. To address this limitation, we present a solution for automatically finding schema-level links between two LOD ontologies – in the sense of ontology alignment. Our solution, called BLOOMS+, extends our previous solution (i.e. BLOOMS) in two significant ways. BLOOMS+ 1) uses a …

Democratization As Discursive Transformation, Vera Sidlova Jan 2011

Democratization As Discursive Transformation, Vera Sidlova

Political Science Honors Projects

The current literature has conceptualized democratization as a linear process of structural transformation whereby a state transitions from a repressive regime to a democracy. This thesis asserts that democratization cannot be reduced to a process of systems change. Through a rhetorical analysis of Vaclav Havel's speeches in the aftermath of the fall of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia, I demonstrate that the experience of democratization is rooted in historical and cultural resources and that local actors can offer valuable alternative perspectives on democracy. Embracing such alternative political imaginations is a way to democratize the concept of democratization itself.

Diffusion Of Tin From Tec-8 Conductive Glass Into Mesoporous Titanium Dioxide In Dye Sensitized Solar Cells, Julienne Cabell, Robert J. Lesuer Jan 2011

Diffusion Of Tin From Tec-8 Conductive Glass Into Mesoporous Titanium Dioxide In Dye Sensitized Solar Cells, Julienne Cabell, Robert J. Lesuer

Mathematics Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

The photoanode of a dye sensitized solar cell is typically a mesoporous titanium dioxide thin film adhered to a conductive glass plate. In the case of TEC-8 glass, an approximately 500 nm film of tin oxide provides the conductivity of this substrate. During the calcining step of photoanode fabrication, tin diffuses into the titanium dioxide layer. Scanning Electron Microscopy and Electron Dispersion Microscopy are used to analyze quantitatively the diffusion of tin through the photoanode. At temperatures (400 to 600 °C) and times (30 to 90 min) typically employed in the calcinations of titanium dioxide layers for dye sensitized solar …

Audience Engagement With Mother-Daughter Relationships In Prime-Time Television Of The 21st Century: A Qualitative Analysis Of Interpretation, Sensemaking, And Perceived Effects, Meghan L. O'Briend Jan 2011

Audience Engagement With Mother-Daughter Relationships In Prime-Time Television Of The 21st Century: A Qualitative Analysis Of Interpretation, Sensemaking, And Perceived Effects, Meghan L. O'Briend

Mass Communications - Dissertations

This qualitative analysis examines audience engagement with fictional portrayals of mother-daughter relationships in prime-time television of the 21st century. I used in-depth interviews with women of different backgrounds to explore how real mothers and daughters interpret portrayals of mother-daughter relationships on television; how they make sense of their own mother-daughter relationships through their engagement with these portrayals; and how and to what extent their engagement with these portrayals influences their own lives and mother-daughter relationships.

The results of this study uncovered a process of audience engagement with mother-daughter relationships on television that involved the viewing experience, interpretation, sensemaking, and perceived …

The Functions Of Music-Listening Across Cultures: The Development Of A Scale Measuring Personal, Social And Cultural Functions Of Music, Diana Boer, Ronald Fischer, Jimena De Garay Hernández, Ma. Luisa González Atilano, Luz Moreno, Marcus Roth, Markus Zenger Jan 2011

The Functions Of Music-Listening Across Cultures: The Development Of A Scale Measuring Personal, Social And Cultural Functions Of Music, Diana Boer, Ronald Fischer, Jimena De Garay Hernández, Ma. Luisa González Atilano, Luz Moreno, Marcus Roth, Markus Zenger

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

We examined the functions of music-listening from a cross-cultural perspective. Two studies were conducted to capture personal, social and cultural experiences with music. Young people were sampled; mainly online surveys were used. Study 1 is a qualitative multicultural study that identified seven main functions of music: background, memories, diversion, emotion, self-regulation, reflection of self, and social bonding. In study 2, based on the qualitative data, we developed and validated a scale measuring Ratings of Experienced Social, PErsonal and Cultural Themes of MUSIC functions (RESPECT-MUSIC) in three cultural samples (Latin-American, Anglo- Saxon, and Germanic). A ten-factorial solution was found to be …

Comparative Study Of 3d Tissue Engineering Scaffold Fabrication Methods, Lisa Rogers Jan 2011

Comparative Study Of 3d Tissue Engineering Scaffold Fabrication Methods, Lisa Rogers

Digitized Theses

Tissue engineering scaffolds act as a structural template for seeded cells and play a significant role in dictating the performance of the final tissue construct. Scaffold properties are governed by the fabrication method and must be tailored to meet the intended application. In this work, 3D poly(carbonate) urethane (PCU) scaffolds were fabricated by solvent casting/particulate leaching (SCPL) and electrospinning. For SCPL, three different types of porogens, namely, alginate beads, D-fructose particles, and gelatin spheres were used. The effects of porogen type and fabrication method on scaffold morphological characteristics were examined. Highly porous scaffolds with uniform pore morphology were fabricated using …

Risk Maps For Targeting Exotic Plant Pest Detection Programs In The United States, R Magarey, D Borchert, J S. Engle, M Colunga-Garcia Michigan State University, F Koch, D Yemshanov Canadian Forest Service, Great Lakes Forestry Centre

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

In the United States, pest risk maps are used by the Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey for spatial and temporal targeting of exotic plant pest detection programs. Methods are described to create standardized host distribution, climate and pathway risk maps for the top nationally ranked exotic pest targets. Two examples are provided to illustrate the risk mapping process: late wilt of corn (Harpophora-maydis) and the giant African land snail (Achatina fulica). Host risk maps were made from county-level crop census and USDA Forest Inventory and Analysis data, respectively. Climate risk maps were made using the North Carolina …

Control, Discipline, And Punish: Black Masculinity And (In)Visible Whiteness In The Nba, Rachel Alicia Griffin, Bernadette Marie Calafell

Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Faculty Scholarship

This chapter critiques the “allegorical power of sport” in relation to historical and contemporary manifestations of white supremacy. In particular, it argues that media discourse about the NBA commissioner David Stern as well as his public statements demonstrate white paternalism. From the onset of his career as commissioner, Stern normalized whiteness as a nonracialized space by repeating discourse that marked the racialized “other” as criminal. Moreover, in a popular sport in which seventy five percent of the players are black but virtually all of the corporate owners and commissioner are white, Stern's enforcement of extreme penalties and policies affecting primarily …

Female Adolescent Body Image And Success At School: A Grounded Theory Approach To Creation Of Administrative Best Practice, Erin K. Murphy Jan 2011

Female Adolescent Body Image And Success At School: A Grounded Theory Approach To Creation Of Administrative Best Practice, Erin K. Murphy

ETD Archive

At present, school administrators do not have necessary information to create a school environment where teenage girls unhappy with their bodies can experience success at school. This research surrounds three research questions: 1. How do adolescent girls' definitions of their bodies relate to their perception of their high school's climate? 2. How does the manner in which adolescent female girls define their bodies relate to their success in school? 3. What is the nature of adolescent girls' and high school administrators' perceptions of how adolescent girls' body image influences administrative practice? Four school administrators and ten high school girls were …

Culturally-Responsive Dance: Building Community One Step At A Time, Jeanette Jackson

ETD Archive

James Catterall's, (1997) report, "Involvement in the Arts and Success in Secondary School", espoused the need for Arts Education. Finding that students who were involved in the arts had increased motivation, school attendance, and positive attitudes, this longitudinal study became a national model of Arts Education advocacy. Landson Billings (1995) assertion that culturally-relevant pedagogy is a pillar for student success is but a further expansion of Ogbu (1987) which stated that "A culturally relevant pedagogy must provide a way for students to maintain their cultural identity while succeeding academically" (p. 155).Although the academic world has reflected and responded to the …

Why Unions Matter, 2nd Edition, Victor G. Devinatz Jan 2011

Why Unions Matter, 2nd Edition, Victor G. Devinatz

Faculty Publications – Management

At the end of the 21st century’s first decade, the U. S. trade union movement is undoubtedly in crisis. Problems abound, with no easy solutions in sight. Elected in 1995 to lead the American Federation of Labor–Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL–CIO), the “New Voice” team headed by John Sweeney buoyed the hopes of trade union reformers that it would overhaul the stultifying bureaucracy of the AFL–CIO, which Lane Kirkland, the previous federation president, did little to dismantle or significantly alter during his 16 years in office. Additionally, Sweeney promised to beef up the resources devoted to union organizing in an …

Love And Marriage On The Medieval English Stage: Using The English Cycle Plays As Sources For Social History, James H. Forse Jan 2011

Love And Marriage On The Medieval English Stage: Using The English Cycle Plays As Sources For Social History, James H. Forse

Quidditas

Much scholarship concerning the concept of “companionate” marriage traces its origins to the early modern period as clergymen, especially Protestant ones, began to publish “guides” to the relationships and respective duties of husbands and wives in the 1500s and 1600s. Studies of marriage in the Middle ages concentrate on marriage among the nobility, since there is more documentary evidence about the medieval elites. Examinations of sermons reveal that the Church, especially after the twelfth century, stressed the sanctity of marriage as an institution created by God and blessed by Christ at the marriage at Cana, but sermons say little about …

A Qualitative Study On African American Males' Perceptions Of Reading, Phyllis Marie Stallings Jan 2011

A Qualitative Study On African American Males' Perceptions Of Reading, Phyllis Marie Stallings

Wayne State University Dissertations

African American male students begin experiencing failure when they enter fourth grade. At this grade, the curriculum becomes more focused, students are expected to complete high-stakes standardized tests, teachers become more distant, and students are expected to become independent learners. Many African American male students are not ready for this transformation. They may not have developed the reading skills needed to understand text books for social studies and science, and are deficient in regard to the math skills needed for problem solving. Understanding which factors are contributing to African American male student failure is important, especially in determining if these …

Regulation Of C-Type Natriuretic Peptide Expression, Donald F. Sellitti, Nancy Koles, Maria C. Mendonça Jan 2011

Regulation Of C-Type Natriuretic Peptide Expression, Donald F. Sellitti, Nancy Koles, Maria C. Mendonça

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) is a member of the small family of natriuretic peptides that also includes atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain, or B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP). Unlike them, it performs its major functions in an autocrine or paracrine manner. Those functions, mediated through binding to the membrane guanylyl cyclase natriuretic peptide receptor B (NPR-B), or by signaling through the non-enzyme natriuretic peptide receptor C (NPR-C), include the regulation of endochondral ossification, reproduction, nervous system development, and the maintenance of cardiovascular health. To date, the regulation of CNP gene expression has not received the attention that has been paid …

Right Of Publicity: Is Behavioral Targeting Violating The Right To Control Your Identity Online?, 10 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 811 (2011), Andrea Stein Fuelleman

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

Behavioral targeting (“BT”) is an advertising technique that receives a great deal of attention due in part to the balkanized self-regulatory policies that address consumer protection issues. The majority of the self-regulation policies, including the BT principles proposed by the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) focus on privacy issues but fail to discuss the impact BT may have on the right to control the commercial use of one’s identity. In discussing the right of publicity, many legal scholars agree that everyone has a right to control the commercial use of his or her identity, regardless of his or her status as …
