Teacher Educators Under Surveillance At A Religious University, Genevieve Harris Jan 2011

Teacher Educators Under Surveillance At A Religious University, Genevieve Harris

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to examine how institutional norms are enforced through surveillance and self-discipline among teacher educators at a religious university. The study builds on prior research regarding university norms and surveillance, as well as religious orientation and prejudice. Eight teacher educators met as part of a larger study on white racial identity and praxis. Focus groups and personal interviews were transcribed and analyzed using situational mapping, a postmodern form of grounded theory. Participants discussed four themes that illustrate surveillance and self-discipline: the university, academic culture, religion and whiteness, and sexism. The data reveal participant responses as …

Culture And Passionate Love, Elaine Hatfield, Richard L. Rapson Jan 2011

Culture And Passionate Love, Elaine Hatfield, Richard L. Rapson

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

For more than 4,000 years, poets and storytellers have sung of the delights and sufferings of love and lust. This chapter reviews what scholars from various disciplines have discovered about the nature of passionate love and sexual desire. Anthropologists and evolutionary psychologists have assumed that passionate love is a cultural universal. Cultural researchers, historians, and social psychologists have emphasized the stunning diversity in the way passionate love and sexual desire have been viewed and experienced. Culture, ethnicity and the rules passed down by political and religious authorities have a profound impact on the way people think about and act out …

‘There Is No Original Creative Power In The Place’:* Creativity And Colonial Anxiety, Camilla Nelson Jan 2011

‘There Is No Original Creative Power In The Place’:* Creativity And Colonial Anxiety, Camilla Nelson

Arts Conference Papers

‘The Englishman possesses eminently the deductive and comparative faculty, and the organ of creativity,’ wrote the British academic turned colonial politician C.H. Pearson in 1859, in one of the earliest appearances of the abstract English noun ‘creativity’ in a published work. This paper investigates the concept of creativity as it was deployed in the cultural and economic fields of the nineteenth century, with particular attention to the relationship between the British metropolis and Australian colony. It examines the mobilisation of the term in diverse fields, including education, commerce and empire-building, by capitalists and workers, colonizers and colonized, in their strategic …

Candy Land, Brittney Champagne Jan 2011

Candy Land, Brittney Champagne

Theses & ETDs

Sweetness functions as a symbolic prop for human desire. My artwork questions the cost of this desire, troubling what can and should be consumed, while negotiating the environmental and social histories of human desire for sugar. This project generates a subjective history for the strange, perhaps unnatural, commodities that people desire, through which I aim to plant them more firmly into the natural world from which they have been separated by so much plastic, foil, and ornament.

Songs Of The Mountains, Songs Of Resistance A Study Of Protest Music Against "King Coal" In Southern Appalachia, Historically And Today, Sara Henry

Theses & ETDs

The focus of this project has been compiling a collection of music about mountaintop removal coal mining and the history of coal mining in Southern Appalachia. The songs are ballads, folk, bluegrass, and old time songs of the past and present. Some songs already focused on this important environmental and social justice issue, and others were changed lyrically to encompass this subject. The practice of changing lyrics to suit a new cause has been common in the history of folk music in America. For example, in Mark Allan Jacksons Prophet Singer, he spends part of a chapter outlining the ways …

Play, Expressivity, And The Elemental Marrying Speech, Movement, And Music Through Improvisation In Orff's Schulwerk, Allison Dotts Jan 2011

Play, Expressivity, And The Elemental Marrying Speech, Movement, And Music Through Improvisation In Orff's Schulwerk, Allison Dotts

Theses & ETDs

Carl Orffs Schulwerk, along with much of his compositional work, started as an exploration into the most primitive, elemental roots of music. In this thesis, I explore the natural, active music making experience developed by Orff, Dorothee Gunther, and Gunild Keetman. Through movement, improvisation, play, composition, and collective performance, music-making through the Schulwerk incorporates musical knowledge into a piece/performance, and creates an effective ensemble through active listening and collaboration. Because of its adaptability, the Schulwerk is an appropriate approach to music learning at any age, even in the 21st century. I also investigate turn-of-the-century fascination with primitivism, and its effect …

This Is A Thesis Co-Creating Aletrnative Stand-Up Comedy, Jeremy Blackowiak Jan 2011

This Is A Thesis Co-Creating Aletrnative Stand-Up Comedy, Jeremy Blackowiak

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines questions of audience, gender, and comic persona in three recorded works of alternative stand-up comedy. After establishing a historical and literary context for the study of stand-up comedy, the project splits into three chapters. Chapter I examines Demetri Martins 2006 album These Are Jokes. This first chapter focuses on questions of the comic-audience relationship, in which Martin manipulates stage power dynamics. Muting himself with a second performer, Martin shifts creative opportunity onto the audience. Chapter II examines Maria Bamfords 2007 album Unwanted Thoughts Syndrome. This chapter complicates the traditional power dynamic by appraising how the comic persona …

"News" From The Government, Graham Stecklein Jan 2011

"News" From The Government, Graham Stecklein

Theses & ETDs

The idea that the government has attempted to influence the American people by managing news media has most recently taken purchase among scholars and journalists discussing the Gulf Wars, but the histories of World War II and the Vietnam War are also a part of this narrative. Since World War II the government of the United States has attempted to manage the effect of war coverage in two ways: by controlling independent news media, and through the production of separate, government-sponsored accounts of military conflict news from the government. In this thesis I will be discussing how this process …

The Impact Of National Cultures On Corporate Cultures In Organisations, Kwasi Dartey-Baah

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The school’s main core business is teaching and learning. A quality curriculum and effective instruction are key elements to ensure successful teaching and learning in schools (Grigsby et. al. 2010). Thus, various activities and resources established in the schools should be optimized to ensure that teaching and learning are implemented effectively. From the human resource perspective, the main drivers of successful teaching and learning are teachers. Hence, quality teachers who can perform their responsibilities with commitment are prerequisites for successful and excellent education.

Effects Of Fatty Acids And Bexarotene On Breast Cancer Cell Progression, Jessica Trappmann Jan 2011

Effects Of Fatty Acids And Bexarotene On Breast Cancer Cell Progression, Jessica Trappmann

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Breast cancer cell growth can be inhibited in vivo by retinoid X receptor (RXR) specific retinoids. In both animal and cell culture studies, omega-3 fatty acids share growth regulatory effects similar to those ofRXR specific retinoids (rexinoids). One synthetic rexinoid, bexarotene (LCD 1069, Targretin), is used clinically to treat cancer patients. Of concern is that some patients are unable to tolerate high doses of such treatment drugs. We hypothesized that n-3 fatty acids and bexarotene may work synergistically to slow breast cancer cell growth. To test our hypothesis, we used an in vitro cell culture model, MCF-7, a human breast …

Affective Labor And Governmental Policy: George W. Bush's New Freedom Commission On Mental Health, Kristin A. Swenson Jan 2011

Affective Labor And Governmental Policy: George W. Bush's New Freedom Commission On Mental Health, Kristin A. Swenson

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

As affective labor is becoming more dominant in contemporary capitalism, the affect of the body politic is increasingly important. This article argues for a theory of the affective state apparatus to account for the state‟s role in governing the affect of the population. An analysis of George W. Bush‟s Achieving the Promise: Transforming Mental Health Care in America reveals that an affective state apparatus functions to capture, constitute, and circulate the affects of the population. This article contends that an affective state apparatus operates through the very intimacies of our bodies in order to produce ever more efficient and productive …

Dressed To Cross: Narratives Of Resistance And Integration In Sei Shônagon's The Pillow Book And Yone Noguchi's The American Diary Of A Japanese Girl, Ina Christiane Seethaler Jan 2011

Dressed To Cross: Narratives Of Resistance And Integration In Sei Shônagon's The Pillow Book And Yone Noguchi's The American Diary Of A Japanese Girl, Ina Christiane Seethaler

Ethnic Studies Review

The Pillow Book by Sei Shônagon, Empress Sadako's lady in waiting from about 993-1000, offers rich detail about the meaning and power of dress during the Heian period [794-1185]. Throughout Yone Noguchi's novel The American Diary of a Japanese Girl (1902), Morning Glory, a newly arrived Japanese immigrant to the U.S., experiments with a multitude of different identities through clothes. Both narratives appropriate (cross-) dressing as a means of overcoming gender, cultural, and class borders. Shônagon and Noguchi engage in "authorial crossdressing" to inhabit a social, cultural, and national space onto which they only have a precarious hold. It is …

Aesthetic And Social Community: Multicultural Poetry And The Anthologizing Of Poems, Yi-Hsuan Tso Jan 2011

Aesthetic And Social Community: Multicultural Poetry And The Anthologizing Of Poems, Yi-Hsuan Tso

Ethnic Studies Review

Scholars from various disciplines have explored the concept of multiculturalism from the perspectives of citizenship, recognition, representation, tokenism, constitutionalism, and other vantage points, with politics and education receiving most of the attention. I While many efforts have been made to explore these aspects of multiculturalism, its significance in poetry, particularly in poetry's composition and critique, has not been duly taken into account. Multicultural poetry designates a critical abstraction in which poetry is classified by relation to a communal culture, history, or customs. In this definition, multicultural poetry is therefore inclusive of poetry written by ethnic minorities, women, non-mainstream religious practitioners, …

¡Pendejo! Preschoolers’ Profane Play: Why Children Make Art, Marissa Mcclure Jan 2011

¡Pendejo! Preschoolers’ Profane Play: Why Children Make Art, Marissa Mcclure

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In this article, I address the concept of critical coalitions in play from two perspectives. First, I consider young children’s art making with digital video through contemporary play frames that propose moving beyond the dichotomy of subject (child as actor; active meaning-maker) and object (child as dupe; susceptible to media and moral panic). This reaffirms that play is at once contradictory, pleasurable, fantastic, and culturally purposeful. Analysis of young children’s digital video as play within frameworks proposed by Wilson (1976), Walkerdine (2007), and Freud (1922/1948) allows for an expansion of philosophical ideas about young children’s art making. This coalition between …

Law, Strategy, And Competitive Advantage, Robert C. Bird Jan 2011

Law, Strategy, And Competitive Advantage, Robert C. Bird

Connecticut Law Review

Firms aggressively seek a competitive advantage over rivals. A voluminous body of strategy scholarship has identified numerous sources of competitive advantage. Yet, the notion that law may be a source of competitive advantage remains largely unexplored. This is surprising given the significant time and resources managers dedicate to legal issues. This Article examines whether legal resources can generate a sustainable competitive advantage for firms. This Article also identifies firm attributes and managerial attitudes that might encourage legally strategic thinking. This Article concludes that law can be a source of a sustainable competitive advantage and that numerous variables exist worthy offuture …

Twenty Years Of Critical Race Theory: Looking Back To Move Forward Commentary: Critical Race Theory: A Commemoration: Lead Article, Kimberle Williams Crenshaw Jan 2011

Twenty Years Of Critical Race Theory: Looking Back To Move Forward Commentary: Critical Race Theory: A Commemoration: Lead Article, Kimberle Williams Crenshaw

Connecticut Law Review

This Article revisits the history of Critical Race Theory (CRT) through a prism that highlights its historical articulation in light of the emergence of postracialism. The Article will explore two central inquiries. This first query attends to the specific contours of law as the site out of which CRT emerged. The Article hypothesizes that legal discourse presented a particularly legible template from which to demystify the role of reason and the rule of law in upholding the racial order. The second objective is to explore the contemporary significance of CRT's trajectory in light of today's "post-racial" milieu. The Article posits …

Parenting And Pregnant Students: An Evaluation Of The Implementation Of The Other Title Ix, Michelle Gough Jan 2011

Parenting And Pregnant Students: An Evaluation Of The Implementation Of The Other Title Ix, Michelle Gough

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits gender discrimination. Although pregnancy has been described as the "quintessential sex difference," Title IX's prohibition of gender discrimination in the context of parenting and pregnant students has often been left out of the discussion, and therefore the understanding, of the implementation of Title IX Regulations. The scholarship discussing the topic shows general agreement that the language and spirit of Title IX has not been given effect thus far by our schools or by some courts. This Article begins by looking to the Title IX regulations themselves and then to the research …

Civilizing Processes, Paddy Dolan Jan 2011

Civilizing Processes, Paddy Dolan

Books/Book chapters

The theory of “civilizing processes” was developed by Norbert Elias in the 1930s to describe and explain the generation of higher standards of various forms of conduct in the context of unplanned but structured changes in state formation and lengthening chains of social interdependencies (Elias 2000). The idea of civilized conduct may seem a strange companion to popular understandings of consumer culture, when the latter phrase is often associated with hedonism, individualism and excess. But consumer cultures do refer to the meanings, values, emotions and practices surrounding the use of goods and services, including how people use their bodies through …

Mechanisms Of Alpha]-Synuclein-Induced Neurodegenertaion In Parkinson's Disease And Stroke, Cherine Belal Jan 2011

Mechanisms Of Alpha]-Synuclein-Induced Neurodegenertaion In Parkinson's Disease And Stroke, Cherine Belal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder affecting one million Americans. Despite its social and economic impact, the pathological cascades that lead to neuron dysfunction and degeneration in PD are poorly understood. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress has been implicated as an initiator or contributing factor in neurodegenerative diseases including PD. The ER is an organelle central to protein folding and intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis. Perturbations of these functions result in ER stress and upregulation of ER stress proteins, of which some have been implicated in counteracting ER stress-induced cell death. The mechanisms that lead to ER stress and how ER …

From Larva To Butterfly: Sophia In Ding Ling’S Miss Sophia’S Diary And Coco In Wei Hui’S Shanghai Baby, Xiaoqing Liu

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Sophia and Coco are two characters in Ding Ling's Miss Sophia's Diary (1928/1995) and Wei Hui's Shanghai Baby (1999), respectively. Like a larva, Sophia, who enters society in the early twentieth century, is weak and immobile. Coco, who lives at the end of the twentieth century, is like a butterfly leading an outlandish lifestyle. The differences between Sophia and Coco reflect the achievement of official feminism, which liberated Chinese women from traditional patriarchal control in the social sense. However, gender issues for women remain unresolved. To fight against traditional patriarchy and especially challenge gender oppression in official feminism, both Sophia …
