Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

When literary critic Nina Baym wrote, in 1978, that scholars need to question the influence of gender on “the grounds upon which certain hallowed American classics have been called great,” it was a controversial assertion. [1] It still is, and no less true. In the ensuing decades, as the field of women’s studies expanded and a new level of critical attention was paid to the role of gender in popular culture, studies of popular fiction led the way. A number of our authors in this issue of Reconstruction draw upon Janice Radway’s Reading the Romance, which was …

Surfacing The Structures Of Patriarchy: Teaching And Learning Threshold Concepts In Women's Studies*, Holly Hassel, Amy Reddinger, Jessica Van Slooten

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Patriarchy is a threshold concept in women’s studies—a significant, defining concept that transforms students’ understanding of the discipline. This article reviews our design, implementation, and findings of a lesson study crafted to teach women’s studies students the complex idea of patriarchy as a social system. We analyze the lesson using both quantitative and qualitative analysis, in keeping with the ideals of feminist pedagogy, suggesting a new model of SoTL research for the women’s studies field.

African American Men Facing Homelessness And Co-Occurring Disorders: A Qualitative Investigation Of Multiple Stigmas, Rebecca C. Mayor Jul 2011

African American Men Facing Homelessness And Co-Occurring Disorders: A Qualitative Investigation Of Multiple Stigmas, Rebecca C. Mayor

Dissertations (1934 -)

Homelessness is a pervasive and problematic phenomenon, and programs designed to assist individuals experiencing homelessness and reduce homelessness face a number of challenges. One such challenge involves difficulty engaging and retaining clientele experiencing homelessness in supportive services (Bhui et al., 2006; Ng & McQuistion, 2004; Padgett et al., 2008). The literature suggests that one explanation for this difficulty may involve the stigmatization experiences that individuals facing homelessness accumulate over time; previous studies have indicated that holding a marginalized position in society may make individuals experiencing homelessness more reluctant to engage in services (because of social rejection fears) and/or more sensitive …

The New Chicana Heroine: Representations Of Anzaldua's Mestiza Consciousness In Chicana Feminist Cultural Productions, Monica E. Montelongo Jul 2011

The New Chicana Heroine: Representations Of Anzaldua's Mestiza Consciousness In Chicana Feminist Cultural Productions, Monica E. Montelongo

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This thesis analyzes Gloria Anzaldúa‟s mestiza consciousness as a representation seen thematically in Chicana feminist cultural productions. Mestiza consciousness, defined in Anzaldúa‟s Borderlands/La Frontera, is a non-binary feminist ideology, which proposes a third space in female identity, explored in terms of gender, class, race, and sexuality identification. The representation of mestiza consciousness in Chicana feminist cultural productions is proposed as a new trope in Chicana\o cultural studies, which I term the “New Chicana Heroine.” The New Chicana Heroine is both a proposal and representation of a third space in female identity. An examination of several authors, artists, and filmmakers, spanning …

Tracking The Language Of Time And Space, 1945-2008, Roderick P. Hart, Elvin T. Lim

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article explores how contemporary historians can avail themselves of quantitative approaches to examine how elusive concepts like ‘time’ and ‘space’ have been used in the public domain. By making use of specifically designed programs, historians can use digital tools to harness an unprecedented mass of information. This is a particularly important methodological innovation at a time of rapidly expanding data: news, speeches, and commentary are available first electronically, and they are available on countless sites in an unprecedented array of formats. Mastering these sources digitally is not only imperative for the contemporary historian; it also provides essential source material …

民粹主義與政治主體的生成 : 社民連的個案, Chak Sang Pang Jul 2011

民粹主義與政治主體的生成 : 社民連的個案, Chak Sang Pang

Lingnan Theses

Nmp4/Ciz Suppresses The Response Of Bone To Anabolic Parathyroid Hormone By Regulating Both Osteoblasts And Osteoclasts, Paul Childress, Binu K. Philip, Alexander G. Robling, Angela Bruzzaniti, Melissa A. Kacena, Nicoletta Bivi, Lilian I. Plotkin, Aaron Heller, Joseph P. Bidwell Jul 2011

Nmp4/Ciz Suppresses The Response Of Bone To Anabolic Parathyroid Hormone By Regulating Both Osteoblasts And Osteoclasts, Paul Childress, Binu K. Philip, Alexander G. Robling, Angela Bruzzaniti, Melissa A. Kacena, Nicoletta Bivi, Lilian I. Plotkin, Aaron Heller, Joseph P. Bidwell

Student Publications

How parathyroid hormone (PTH) increases bone mass is unclear, but understanding this phenomenon is significant to the improvement of osteoporosis therapy. Nmp4/CIZ is a nucleocytoplasmic shuttling transcriptional repressor that suppresses PTH-induced osteoblast gene expression and hormone-stimulated gains in murine femoral trabecular bone. To further characterize Nmp4/CIZ suppression of hormone-mediated bone growth, we treated 10-week-old Nmp4-knockout (KO) and wild-type (WT) mice with intermittent human PTH(1-34) at 30 μg/kg daily or vehicle, 7 days/week, for 2, 3, or 7 weeks. Null mice treated with hormone (7 weeks) gained more vertebral and tibial cancellous bone than WT animals, paralleling the exaggerated response in …

Feminist Politics And The Use Of Force: Theorising Feminist Action And Security Council Resolution 1325, Gina Heathcote Jul 2011

Feminist Politics And The Use Of Force: Theorising Feminist Action And Security Council Resolution 1325, Gina Heathcote

Socio-Legal Review

This article reflects on the ten-year anniversary of 'Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security' (hereinafter, "Resolution 1325'). The article contextualises the Security Council's approach within feminist legal thinking, using Resolution 1325 as a spinboard for increased feminist conversations on the recurrent themes of essentialism, victim feminism and praxis. It is argued that feminist action in the Security Council should extend these debates. To this end, the article concludes with reflection on the possibility of force to save women, arguing that this fourth axis of feminist debate be taken up with some urgency by feminist scholars and activists.

Stealth Censorship: How The Calcutta High Court Is Suppressing A Sociological Book On Public Interest Litigation, Hans Dembowski Jul 2011

Stealth Censorship: How The Calcutta High Court Is Suppressing A Sociological Book On Public Interest Litigation, Hans Dembowski

Socio-Legal Review

Ten years ago, Oxford University Press published Hans Dembowski's book 'Taking the State to Court - Public Interest Litigation and the Public Sphere." Shortly afterwards, OUP discontinued international distribution, because the Calcutta High Court initiated contempt-of court proceedings against author and publisher. The case has regrettably been kept pending, no judgment was passed. A sociological study that deals with highly relevant issues, including urban planning, governance and the role of the judiciary, the author argues that it is of central importance to academic discussion. In this comment, the author and his academic supervisor develop on this argument, and speak of …

A Cultural Perspective On Motivation Factors Affecting Exhibition Participation, Young Ki Lee Jul 2011

A Cultural Perspective On Motivation Factors Affecting Exhibition Participation, Young Ki Lee

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

With increasing global competitions, more opportunities transcending national boundaries may exist for the exhibition organizers and participants. This study offered an integrated approach to understanding how various motivation factors affect the participation in exhibition. The literature review included an introduction of push/pull motivation theories as one of the most representative motivation theories. The factor analysis of survey results supported the categorization of push/pull factors in exhibition industry. The paper concluded that the factor analysis procedures yielded the motivation factor dimensions with similar natures and four underlined motivation dimensions of exhibition participation were labeled. Furthermore, the cultural difference between Western and …

Early Childhood Bilingualism Leads To Advances In Executive Attention: Dissociating Culture And Language, Sujin Yang, Hwajin Yang, Barbara Lust Jul 2011

Early Childhood Bilingualism Leads To Advances In Executive Attention: Dissociating Culture And Language, Sujin Yang, Hwajin Yang, Barbara Lust

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This study investigated whether early especially efficient utilization of executive functioning in young bilinguals would transcend potential cultural benefits. To dissociate potential cultural effects from bilingualism, four-year-old U.S. Korean-English bilingual children were compared to three monolingual groups – English and Korean monolinguals in the U.S.A. and another Korean monolingual group, in Korea. Overall, bilinguals were most accurate and fastest among all groups. The bilingual advantage was stronger than that of culture in the speed of attention processing, inverse processing efficiency independent of possible speed-accuracy trade-offs, and the network of executive control for conflict resolution. A culture advantage favoring Korean monolinguals …

The Intersection Between Liberal Education And Health Profession Education At Armstrong, Andi Elizabeth Mincer Jul 2011

The Intersection Between Liberal Education And Health Profession Education At Armstrong, Andi Elizabeth Mincer

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This mixed methods inquiry explored how liberal and health professions faculty at one University perceived each College and the relationship between faculties in each of their Colleges. Three faculty members from each of these Colleges were interviewed individually and they then participated in a focus group, discussing prompt statements created from the transcripts of the interviews. The transcripts of the interviews and the focus group were then used to construct a web-based survey that was offered to faculty in both Colleges. Seventy percent of faculty completed the survey. Qualitative and quantitative data clustered into five main themes: 1) faculty largely …

Images Of Experience: Decolonizing Medicine, Colleen Hill Patton Jul 2011

Images Of Experience: Decolonizing Medicine, Colleen Hill Patton

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The experiences of illness and trauma are vivid examples of a discontinuity that separates us from those that surround us. In seeking treatment, we enter a very foreign culture, regardless of how long or of how serious our injury or illness. We are disconnected from our personal and private lives and are placed within a cultural group bearing a separate set of beliefs and practices. Practitioners of medicine make up a distinct culture. This culture is formed as a site of discontinuity in a large part through the experiences of medical education from that of the experiences of the one …

La Llorona And Horror: A Chicana Feminist Reading Of The Films “The Wailer” And “The Wailer Ii”, Orquidea Morales Jul 2011

La Llorona And Horror: A Chicana Feminist Reading Of The Films “The Wailer” And “The Wailer Ii”, Orquidea Morales

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This thesis, with a thorough analysis of The Wailer: La Llorona (2006) and The Wailer II: La Llorona II (2007), analyzes how these films create a new filmic representation of La Llorona. These films, marketed specifically for the Latina/o market, portray an important icon not only for the Mexican and Mexican American community and to a lesser extent a broader Latina/o community but also for Chicana feminists that have adopted her into their world vision as a symbol of agency. I propose a Chicana horror feminist reading of these films to look at gender and genre. The image of La …

Miniature Nation Building: Model Railroading And The Dialectics Of Scale In Post-Wwii America, Ivan Weber Jul 2011

Miniature Nation Building: Model Railroading And The Dialectics Of Scale In Post-Wwii America, Ivan Weber

American Studies ETDs

This thesis advances a critical understanding of how scale informs the production and consumption of the American nation, and it makes a foray into Marxist critical analysis by integrating the theoretical and methodological objectives of historical materialism with the multiple, dialectically construed dimensionalities of scale. The hobby of model railroading serves as the case study for this analysis, and the dialectics of scale as the theoretical apparatus with which this analysis is articulated. The central argument of the thesis is that the model railroad hobby builds the nation, in miniature, through the continual regeneration of American masculinity, the traditional American …

Hearts, Bellies, And The Hunger Of Heroes: Intertraditional Agonistic Discourse Between The Iliad And Odyssey, Israel Mcmullin Jul 2011

Hearts, Bellies, And The Hunger Of Heroes: Intertraditional Agonistic Discourse Between The Iliad And Odyssey, Israel Mcmullin

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Within this thesis I argue that the Iliad and Odyssey, as representatives of sub-genres within the larger archaic Greek epic tradition, engage in a shared agonistic discourse with one another in order to demonstrate that the hero of each epic is superior to that of its competitor. In order to trace this agonistic discourse, I examine the manner in which each epic employs the terms thumos, 'heart,' and gaster, 'belly,' to define itself in opposition to its competing epic sub-genre. Traditionally scholars have considered the Odyssey the more recent of the two epics and, thus, relying upon the Iliad. However, …

A New Language For Heroes: Odysseus, Ajax, And Sophistic Language In Attic Tragedy, Scott Barnard Jul 2011

A New Language For Heroes: Odysseus, Ajax, And Sophistic Language In Attic Tragedy, Scott Barnard

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

My objective in this project is to explore the ways in which the Homeric figures of Odysseus and Ajax are reinterpreted for the tragic stage by Sophocles and Euripides, with particular emphasis on the presence of marked sophistic modes and values of speech. My thesis begins with an overview of the sophistic movement and a discussion of the philosophical and stylistic tenets of sophism. Based on these, I theorize that during fifth century Be a civic anxiety over the power of sophistic rhetoric develops in Athens and finds unique expression in tragic poetry. Next, I define the particular rhetorical styles …

Forms And Fragments: Enactment Of Cultural Identification In An Online Community Of Chinese Living Overseas, Haibin Dong Jul 2011

Forms And Fragments: Enactment Of Cultural Identification In An Online Community Of Chinese Living Overseas, Haibin Dong

Communication ETDs

This research is an interpretive study of the dynamics of cultural identification as enacted by Chinese individuals living overseas who participate in a virtual online community known as Wenxuecity.com. The study draws on intercultural communication theories of identity proposed by Carbaugh, Collier, and Hecht, as well as on my own integrative framework for the analysis of cultural identity, to explore the self-other interaction in identity enactment, the multidimensionality of identity, and the centrality of communication in processes of identification. Through the application of a qualitative analysis of online discourse, I found three primary forms of cultural identification-- perceptual, strategic, and …
