American Circus Re-Invented: Queering Cirque Du Soleil, Michael Johnson, Jr. Oct 2011

American Circus Re-Invented: Queering Cirque Du Soleil, Michael Johnson, Jr.

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

During Cirque Du Soleil’s twenty-six years, Cirque has challenged the traditional concept of the circus as American’s have come to understand it, by delivering entertainment and spectacle that dramatically differs from circuses like those organized by memorable pioneers P.T. Barnum & Bailey©, or Ringling Brothers© whose roots are found in the earliest history of the circus. The distinguishing hallmark of all Cirque Du Soleil performances is the notable absence of these traditional circus characteristics, supplanted with theatricality, conceptually distinct musical scores, colorful architectural backgrounds, aerial and perpendicular acrobatics, stylized choreography, puppetry and martial arts. The artistic vision promulgated …

War On Terror By Other Means: The Media Industries After 9/11, Graham Barnfield, Philip Hammond

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

This Reconstruction supplement is the latest phase of a process that, formally speaking, began as the tenth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center crept into view. One of the supplement’s editors, Phil Hammond, organized the September 2010 Screens of Terror conference at London South Bank University, to initiate a discussion of how the news and entertainment industries had responded to the crisis. Many of the conference contributions were collected in Hammond’s anthology, published on September 11, 2011.[1] Meanwhile both editors set to work on compiling a special issue of Journal of War and Culture Studies …

R-E-S-P-E-C-T Expectations, Perceptions, And Influences On Moroccan Etiquette, Christina Ermilio Oct 2011

R-E-S-P-E-C-T Expectations, Perceptions, And Influences On Moroccan Etiquette, Christina Ermilio

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Why do humans naturally create distinctions? How do we establish these distinctions between ourselves? What marks us as an individual within a particular group? In this project, I consider how etiquette is defined in Morocco and how it relates to the work of certain theorists and sociologists such as Pierre Bourdieu. Primarily, this project focuses on expectations of behavior, perceptions of the ‘other,’ and influences on the definition of good behavior in Morocco. In addition to observations in public spaces and more specifically at universities, I interviewed University students from Ibn Tofail in Kenitra and from Mohammed V in Rabat, …

When Mountain Bellies Grow Round: Localized Knowledge And Behaviors Facilitating Pregnancy And Childbirth In Phaphlu, Nepal, Cailin Marsden

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In attempts to gain a level of understanding of a community’s localized experiences, beliefs, practices, and roles around pregnancy and childbirth, ethnographic fieldwork was conducted with the mothers and fathers of Phaphlu in the Solukhumbu district of Nepal. Aimed at the validation of diverse and localized ways of knowing revealed during the fieldwork period, this paper applies anthropologist Bridgette Jordan’s theoretical framework of authoritative knowledge to the emergent themes of subjectively understood childbirth (knowledge acquisition and flow, role of the husband, and protective behavior.)

The Significance Of Seeking Truth In Art, Veronica Cook Oct 2011

The Significance Of Seeking Truth In Art, Veronica Cook

All Student Theses and Dissertations

One of my main objectives in creating art is to emphasize the importance of inner human development and expression of higher being as opposed to reactionary processes that culminate into an art form.

My art, my research and my life have blended into a unified assemblage of experiential expression. What is human consciousness and how do we express feelings, thoughts and concepts? What does it mean to love or hate and how do these feelings affect our environment?

This text is an attempt to make sense of the feelings of oneness with all forms of life that become the underlying …

With the tightened competitive conditions in the gaming industry, it is essential for casino management to focus on customer service. Chinese customers are very important for the Las Vegas gaming market. Even though the games offered by the casinos are the core value that Chinese customers seek when visiting a casino, a warm, comfortable and intimate service will enhance their gaming experience as well. Understanding important Chinese culture factors such as superstitions, gaming characteristics and communication styles can help casino employees enhance the quality of the service they are able to offer to Chinese customers, thereby increasing satisfaction and retention.

Intercultural Accommodation Of Ethnic Minority Consumers: An Empirical Examination Of The Moderating Effects In Service Encounters, Sarah Mady Oct 2011

Intercultural Accommodation Of Ethnic Minority Consumers: An Empirical Examination Of The Moderating Effects In Service Encounters, Sarah Mady

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The current study proposed a model of intercultural accommodation and nine emergent hypotheses grounded in three theories: Accommodation Theory, Distinctiveness Theory and the Elaboration Likelihood Model. The study expected that the offering of a service in the minority consumer's language and by an ethnically-similar service provider will lead to favorable service quality perceptions, in the absence of any intervening variables. Ethnic minority consumers were also expected to differ in their perceptions of service quality when intercultural accommodation efforts were or were not offered given a number of intervening variables. The proposed model and the nine hypotheses were assessed via a …

The Use Of Soil Micromorphology At Sylvester Manor, Eric Proebsting Sep 2011

The Use Of Soil Micromorphology At Sylvester Manor, Eric Proebsting

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Soil micromorphology is a vibrant sub-discipline of archaeology that studies sediment fabric, color, composition, shape, layering, and sorting using intact soil cores and thin sections. This technique takes into account the dynamic relationship between people and the world in which they live, and has contributed useful archaeological data to the Sylvester Manor Project. This paper constructs a landscape history for portions of the South and West lawns using soil cores and thin sections. Results reveal how Sylvester Manor’s lawn, Midden, and Brick and Mortar Layer were composed, as well as how they were changed over time by plant and animal …

This chapter introduces the history of the Sylvester Manor Project. It emphasizes the importance of the interdisciplinary approach employed during the project and the overall goals of the investigations. A discussion of pluralistic space and its importance as a central theme of the investigations is also presented. This is followed by a discussion of the Native American history of Shelter Island and its European colonization with particular attention given to the initial establishment of Sylvester Manor as a provisioning plantation, its connections to two large sugar plantations on Barbados, and its subsequent transformation into a commercial estate.

Appropriateness In Design, Wing Man, Karen Ma Sep 2011

Appropriateness In Design, Wing Man, Karen Ma

Lingnan Theses

When the term ‘design object’ is used to refer to artifacts, we presuppose that they can serve mundane functions and provide aesthetic pleasure. In many cases, the visual form of a design object is a result of achieving aesthetic function and practical function. What is the relation between these two functions? In the design process, designers also strike a balance between aesthetic pursuit, utilitarian purpose and other factors, such as environmental protection. What is the balance of these aims (aesthetic aim and the non-aesthetic aims)? My research on this topic suggests that it may be useful to conceive it in …
