Information System Maturity And The Hospitality Enterprise Performance, Daniela Garbin Praničević, Nikša Alfirević, Mojca Indihar Štemberger
Economic and Business Review
The purpose of this paper is to empirically evaluate the relationship between the maturity of hotels’ information systems and their performance. This study uses customized models of information system (IS) maturity and hotel performance measurement. Since we wanted to include the intangible aspects of performance, we opted for an adapted application of the Balanced Scorecard model. In the empirical part of the paper, fundamental constructs of the model are verified, while the individual items are further evaluated by employing discriminant analysis to distinguish hotels with relatively low and high performance levels. The findings demonstrate the existence of a significant and …

The Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory is sensitive to neutrinos of all flavors above 0.1 EeV. These interact through charged and neutral currents in the atmosphere giving rise to extensive air showers. When interacting deeply in the atmosphere at nearly horizontal incidence, neutrinos can be distinguished from regular hadronic cosmic rays by the broad time structure of their shower signals in the water-Cherenkov detectors. In this paper we present for the first time an analysis based on down-going neutrinos. We describe the search procedure, the possible sources of background, the method to compute the exposure and the associated …

An Analytical Study Of Some Biomechanical Variables In Coxless Four Rowing Over A 2000-Meter Race, Hisham Mohammed Nasser
Modern Sport
Rowing is considered one of the sports that demands high levels of performance, which can only be achieved through the application of advanced scientific methods to reach top-level results. The importance of this study lies in analyzing biomechanical variables in coxless four rowing (with two oars per rower) to identify strengths and weaknesses, aiming to correct technical flaws and enhance performance. The study aimed to analyze specific biomechanical variables during a 2000-meter rowing race and to determine the relationship between these variables and performance outcomes. The researcher employed a descriptive method, selecting a sample of four elite Iraqi rowers from …

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Differences in the timing of glacial advances, which are commonly attributed to climatic changes, can be due to variations in valley topography. Cosmogenic 10Be dates from 24 glacial moraine boulders in 5 valleys define two age populations, late-glacial and early Holocene. Moraine ages correlate with paleoglacier valley hypsometries. Moraines in valleys with lower maximum altitudes date to the lateglacial, whereas those in valleys with higher maximum altitudes are early Holocene. Two valleys with similar equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs), but contrasting ages, are < 5 km apart and share the same aspect, such that spatial differences in climate can be excluded. A glacial mass-balance cellular automata model of these two neighboring valleys predicts that change from a cooler-drier to warmer-wetter climate (as at the Holocene onset) would lead to the glacier in the higher altitude catchment advancing, while the lower one retreats or disappears, even though the ELA only shifted by ~120 m.

When A Promotion Is Denied: The Effects Of Decision Stage On Perceptions Of Promotion And Price Fairness, Monika Kukar-Kinney, Lan Xia, Kent B. Monroe
Economic and Business Review
Marketers frequently use promotions to enhance sales and increase consumers’ perceptions of value. However, most promotions usually come with restrictions, such as time expiration, quantity or product model restriction, etc. In the present research, the effect of the stage in the purchase process when the consumer finds out about the restriction is investigated. The findings indicate that the later in the purchase process the consumer discovers the restriction, the greater is the perception that the effort invested into the purchase is wasted, consequently resulting in lower promotion and price fairness. This effect is mediated through the feeling of entitlement to …

Are Pakistani Consumer Ricardian?, Muhammad Waqas, Masood Sarwar Awan
Economic and Business Review
The purpose of this study is to check the Ricardian Equivalence Hypothesis in case of Pakistan by using annual data for the period of 1973-2009. Government expenditure, private consumption expenditure, tax revenue, government debt, disposable income, government budget deficit and wealth are the variables which are used for analysis. Cointegration results show a long run relationship among the variables. Results of structural form consumption function invalidate the Ricardian Equivalence Hypothesis in case of Pakistan. These results draw attention towards the significance of fiscal policies in boosting private consumption and controlling budget deficits, which are the prime goals of stabilization policies …

Revisiting The Relationship Between Exchange Rates And Output Within Svar Blanchard-Quah Framework: Empirical Evidence From Turkey, Germany And Russia, Oguzhan Ozcelebi, Nurtac Yildirim
Economic and Business Review
It seems important to determine the effects of exchange rate fluctuations on economic performance. In this study, we attempt to shed some light the relationship between industrial production difference and exchange rates using two Structural Vector Autoregression (SVAR) Blanchard-Quah models for the cases of Turkey and Germany and Turkey and Russia. Results from the impulse response functions (IRFs) and forecast error variance decompositions (FEVDs) of the two SVAR models emphasized that effects of nominal exchange rate on industrial production difference and real exchange rate are temporary. Nevertheless, macroeconomic policies of Turkey, Germany and Russia influencing nominal exchange rates should be …

Partition Decoupling For Multi-Gene Analysis Of Gene Expression Profiling Data, Rosemary Braun, Gregory Leibon, Scott Pauls, Daniel Rockmore
Dartmouth Scholarship
Background:
Multi-gene interactions likely play an important role in the development of complex phenotypes, and relationships between interacting genes pose a challenging statistical problem in microarray analysis, since the genes involved in these interactions may not exhibit marginal differential expression. As a result, it is necessary to develop tools that can identify sets of interacting genes that discriminate phenotypes without requiring that the classification boundary between phenotypes be convex.
Results:
We describe an extension and application of a new unsupervised statistical learning technique, known as the Partition Decoupling Method (PDM), to gene expression microarray data. This method may be used …

We present a measurement of the Bs0 lifetime in fully and partially reconstructed Bs0→Ds-(Φπ -)X decays in 1.3fb -1 collected in pp̄ collisions at √s=1.96TeV by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We measure τ(Bs0)=1.518±0.041(stat)±0. 027(syst)ps. The ratio of this result and the world average B0 lifetime yields τ(Bs0)/τ(B0)=0.99±0.03, which is in agreement with recent theoretical predictions. © 2011 American Physical Society.

We consider the stochastic patterns of a system of communicating, or coupled, self-propelled particles in the presence of noise and communication time delay. For sufficiently large environmental noise, there exists a transition between a translating state and a rotating state with stationary center of mass. Time delayed communication creates a bifurcation pattern dependent on the coupling amplitude between particles. Using a mean field model in the large number limit, we show how the complete bifurcation unfolds in the presence of communication delay and coupling amplitude. Relative to the center of mass, the patterns can then be described as transitions between …

We report a measurement of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) rate in galaxy clusters at 0.9 < z < 1.46 from the Hubble Space Telescope Cluster Supernova Survey. This is the first cluster SN Ia rate measurement with detected z > 0.9 SNe. Finding 8 ± 1 cluster SNe Ia, we determine an SN Ia rate of 0.50+0.23 –0.19 (stat) +0.10 –0.09 (sys) h 2 70 SNuB (SNuB ≡ 10–12 SNe L –1 ☉, B yr–1). In units of stellar mass, this translates to 0.36+0.16 –0.13 (stat) +0.07 –0.06 (sys) h 2 70 SNuM (SNuM ≡ 10–12 SNe M –1 ☉ yr–1). This represents a …
