An Evaluation Of The Christa Mcauliffe Space Education Center Programs, Shelley Diane Ellington
Theses and Dissertations
Recent calls for better education have many teachers trying out new ways to engage their students and teach them required content. In the current educational atmosphere of accountability, many people are beginning to question the effectiveness and utility of their educational programs. The Christa McAuliffe Space Education Center (CMSEC) is one such program. Key aspects addressed in this study included better understanding the essence of the CMSEC experience, whether it provides any beneficial impact to visitors, and how the CMSEC programs fit into the educational spectrum. An exploratory mixed-method design (utilizing focus groups, interviews, and surveys) was used to explore …
Is The Transition From Classical To Quantum Mechanics Truly An Example Of A Kuhnian Revolution?, Valia Allori
Is The Transition From Classical To Quantum Mechanics Truly An Example Of A Kuhnian Revolution?, Valia Allori
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
I argue that classical mechanics and quantum theories are not necessarily as radically different as they have been depicted so far. In fact whether we actually have a paradigm shift going from classical to quantum mechanics is going to depend on what we understand quantum mechanics to be.

Is It Time To Shed A "Tier" For Four-Tier Prescription Drug Formularies? Specialty Drug Tiers May Violate Hipaa's Anti-Discrimination Provisions And Statutory Goals, Joseph J. Hylak-Reinholtz, Jay R. Naftzger
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This Article will analyze whether specialty drug tiers violate HIPAA. This is a question of first impression—no federal or state court decision provides an answer. Part II of this Article provides relevant background material. We begin with a discussion about the development of prescription drug coverage in the United States and the emergence of drug tiers as a cost-saving mechanism. In Part III of this Article, we begin with an historical overview of accepted discrimination and risk classification within insurance. Next, we discuss HIPAA's statutory language, legislative history, and key parts of the Final Rule implementing the law. We also …

Biliopleural Fistula With Cholethorax. A Rare Complication Of Percutaneous Transhepatic Biliary Drainage., Hamad H. Al-Qahtani
Saudi Medical Journal
Biliopleural fistula leading to cholethorax formation is a rare complication of percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC). Ideally it should be treated conservatively as it closes spontaneously in most patients. However, in complicated cases it may require surgical intervention. We report a 35-year-old male with right biliopleural fistula with cholethorax following PTC. The patient complained of shortness of breath, right pleuritic chest pain, and cough after removal of PTC catheter. Chest radiograph showed an extensive right pleural effusion. The diagnosis was confirmed by drainage of dark green pleural fluid with high bilirubin content. The initial treatment with chest tube and drainage was …
Can Financial Statement Auditors Identify Risk Patterns In It Control Evidence?, Daniel D. Selby
Can Financial Statement Auditors Identify Risk Patterns In It Control Evidence?, Daniel D. Selby
Accounting Faculty Publications
Anecdotal evidence suggests that audit clients are automating more internal controls over time. Audit firms customarily respond to their clients’ increasing IT (information technology) risks by including more IT audit specialists in their external audit engagements. But, using IT audit specialists on the audit engagement to examine the IT risks that external financial statement auditors can examine may be detrimental in the long-run for audit firms. First, IT audit specialists receive higher compensation than financial statement auditors. So, using IT audit specialists to perform tasks that could be performed by financial statement auditors may increase audit costs and decrease audit …
Managing Individual And Organizational Performance: The Critical Mediating Role Of Collaboration, Oliver L.G Bouclier
Managing Individual And Organizational Performance: The Critical Mediating Role Of Collaboration, Oliver L.G Bouclier
Student Scholarship
Although collaboration has often been suggested as a critical factor for improving performance, its relation to individual and organizational performance has been given little attention in management research. This paper proposes a model of collaboration including affective, cognitive and organizational antecedents, and measures its effects on individual and organizational success. Over 900 front line employees in two firms in the service industry were surveyed. Structural Equation Modeling and bootstrap analysis were used to examine its role as a mediator between three independent variables (i.e. commitment, self-efficacy, and rewards) and three dependent variables (i.e. individual success, organizational efficiency and quality) while …

Opening The Broom Closet: Recognizing The Religious Rights Of Wiccans, Witches, And Other Neo-Pagans, Bradford S. Stewart
Northern Illinois University Law Review
Religious freedom is a core component of our nation and one of the most widely known and accepted constitutional guarantees provided by the First Amendment. No prior civilization had adopted a national policy that tolerated various religious beliefs while simultaneously refusing to endorse or promote a national religion. Considering the fundamental backdrop of religious tolerance, it might seem unimaginable that a skilled medical technician could be fired from her job, an alleged victim of sexual abuse could have her credibility undermined in a court of law, or a mother could lose custody of her child, under the color of legality, …

Confidentiality Preserving Security Properties For Cyber-Physical Systems, Thoshitha T. Gamage, Thomas P. Roth, Bruce M. Mcmillin
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
The work in this paper presents recent advances in developing a theory of information flow security specifically geared towards preserving the event confidentiality in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs). Preserving the confidentiality of sensitive internal actions is a unique challenge in CPSs due to the inherent external observability of such systems and the tight coupling between their cyber and physical domains. the far-reaching objective of this work is to develop a science of self-obfuscating systems based on the composition of simple building blocks. a model of Nondeducibility composes the building blocks under information flow security properties. to this end, this work presents …

In Monroe v Pape, over an impassioned dissent by Justice Frankfurter, the Supreme Court held that Section 1983 authorized suits against state and local officials for constitutional violations even if those violations were not authorized by state or local law. But it also held that cities and other local governmental entities could not be sued under the statute. Monell v. Department of Social Services overruled Monroe and held that cities could be sued under the statute. But it added an odd limitation that became known as the “Monell doctrine”: local governments could not be sued for their employees’ constitutional wrongs …

Haploinsufficiency of TBX1, encoding a T-box transcription factor, is largely responsible for the physical malformations in velo-cardio-facial /DiGeorge/22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) patients. Cardiovascular malformations in these patients are highly variable, raising the question as to whether DNA variations in the TBX1 locus on the remaining allele of 22q11.2 could be responsible. To test this, a large sample size is needed. The TBX1 gene was sequenced in 360 consecutive 22q11DS patients. Rare and common variations were identified. We did not detect enrichment in rare SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) number in those with or without a congenital heart defect. One exception …

Nonlinear Progressive Wave Equation For Stratified Atmospheres, B. Edward Mcdonald, Andrew A. Piacsek
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
The nonlinear progressive wave equation (NPE) [McDonald and Kuperman, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 81, 1406–1417 (1987)] is expressed in a form to accommodate changes in the ambient atmospheric density, pressure, and sound speed as the time-stepping computational window moves along a path possibly traversing significant altitude differences (in pressure scale heights). The modification is accomplished by the addition of a stratification term related to that derived in the 1970s for linear range-stepping calculations and later adopted into Khokhlov-Zabolotskaya-Kuznetsov-type nonlinear models. The modified NPE is shown to preserve acoustic energy in a ray tube and yields analytic similarity solutions for …

The exponential growth of sequence data provides abundant information for the discovery of new enzyme reactions. Correctly annotating the functions of highly diverse proteins can be difficult, however, hindering use of this information. Global analysis of large superfamilies of related proteins is a powerful strategy for understanding the evolution of reactions by identifying catalytic commonalities and differences in reaction and substrate specificity, even when only a few members have been biochemically or structurally characterized. A comparison of >2500 sequences sharing the six-bladed β-propeller fold establishes sequence, structural, and functional links among the three subgroups of the functionally diverse N6P superfamily: …

Performance Comparison Between Ib School Students And Non-Ib School Students On The International Schools’ Assessment (Isa) And On The Social And Emotional Wellbeing Questionnaire, Ling Tan, Yan Bibby
Monitoring Learning
This report examines the performance of students enrolled in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) on the ACER International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) compared with non-IB students from the same ISA cohorts. The ISA is an assessment created especially for students in international schools in Grades 3 to 10. The assessment asks both multiple-choice and open-ended questions in the areas of writing, reading and mathematics, and provides international normative information about student performance. The Reading and Mathematical Literacy are based on the internationally endorsed frameworks of the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). …
Shutting The Black Door: Using American Needle To Cure The Problem Of Improper Product Definition, Daniel A. Schwartz
Shutting The Black Door: Using American Needle To Cure The Problem Of Improper Product Definition, Daniel A. Schwartz
Michigan Law Review
Section 1 of the Sherman Act is designed to protect competition by making illegal any agreement that has the effect of limiting consumer choice. To make this determination, courts first define the product at issue and then consider the challenged restraint's impact on the market in which that product competes. When considering § 1 allegations against sports leagues, courts have tended to define products according to the structure of the leagues. The result of this tendency is that harm to competition between the leagues' teams is not properly accounted for in the courts' analyses. This, in turn, grants leagues a …
Unclaimed Property And Due Process: Justifying 'Revenue-Raising' Modern Escheat, Teagan J. Gregory
Unclaimed Property And Due Process: Justifying 'Revenue-Raising' Modern Escheat, Teagan J. Gregory
Michigan Law Review
States have long claimed the right to take custody of presumably abandoned property and hold it for the benefit of the true owner under the doctrine of escheat. In the face of increasing fiscal challenges, states have worked to increase their collection of unclaimed property via new escheat legislation that appears to bear little or no relation to protecting the interests of owners. Holders of unclaimed property have raised substantive due process challenges in response to these modern escheat statutes. This Note contends that two categories of these disputed laws-those shortening dormancy periods and those allowing states to estimate a …

In Sjögren's syndrome, keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye) is associated with infiltration of lacrimal glands by leukocytes and consequent losses of tear-fluid production and the integrity of the ocular surface. We investigated the effect of blockade of the lymphotoxin-beta receptor (LTBR) pathway on lacrimal-gland pathology in the NOD mouse model of Sjögren's syndrome.

Erect Wing Facilitates Context-Dependent Wnt/Wingless Signaling By Recruiting The Cell-Specific Armadillo-Tcf Adaptor Earthbound To Chromatin, Nan Xin, Hassina Benchabane, Ai Tian, Kerrie Nguyen, Lindsay Klofas, Yashi Ahmed
Dartmouth Scholarship
During metazoan development, the Wnt/Wingless signal transduction pathway is activated repetitively to direct cell proliferation, fate specification, differentiation and apoptosis. Distinct outcomes are elicited by Wnt stimulation in different cellular contexts; however, mechanisms that confer context specificity to Wnt signaling responses remain largely unknown. Starting with an unbiased forward genetic screen in Drosophila, we recently uncovered a novel mechanism by which the cell-specific co-factor Earthbound 1 (Ebd1), and its human homolog jerky, promote interaction between the Wnt pathway transcriptional co-activators B-catenin/Armadillo and TCF to facilitate context-dependent Wnt signaling responses. Here, through the same genetic screen, we find an unanticipated requirement …
