Orthodontic-Prosthetic Implant Anchorage In A Partially Edentulous Patient, Jenny Zwei-Chieng Chang, Pi-Huei Liu, Ya-Ting Wang, Yi-Jane Chen, Chung-Chen Jane Yao, Eddie Hsiang-Hua Lai Jan 2011

Orthodontic-Prosthetic Implant Anchorage In A Partially Edentulous Patient, Jenny Zwei-Chieng Chang, Pi-Huei Liu, Ya-Ting Wang, Yi-Jane Chen, Chung-Chen Jane Yao, Eddie Hsiang-Hua Lai

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Three-dimensional planning of a dental-implant site is critical when implants are to initially be used as orthodontic anchorage for tooth movement and to later serve as prosthetic abutments. The combined orthodontic and prosthetic implant restorative treatment of an adult patient with multiple missing teeth, an upper midline deviation, and malocclusion is described in this article. Plastic model bases combined with customized position plates allowed the precise transfer of the proposed implant position from the diagnostic arrangement to the original cast to avoid compromising subsequent orthodontic tooth movement.

Using Growth Rate Of Reading Fluency To Predict Performance On Statewide Achievement Tests, Rachelle Whittaker Hinkle Jan 2011

Using Growth Rate Of Reading Fluency To Predict Performance On Statewide Achievement Tests, Rachelle Whittaker Hinkle

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Federal legislation has prescribed the increased use of statewide achievement tests as the culmination of a student's knowledge and ability at the end of a grade level; however, schools need to be able to predict those who are at-risk of performing poorly on these high-stakes tests. Three studies served to identify a means of predicting statewide achievement test scores in either third or eighth grade based on CBM reading scores and rates of improvement at first, second, and third grades or third, fourth, and fifth grades using readily available statistical procedures. One-half of the third-grade data was used in Study …

A Study Of A Management Supported Single Minute Exchange Of Die (Smed) Program For The Flexible Packaging Industry, Jared Unterborn Jan 2011

A Study Of A Management Supported Single Minute Exchange Of Die (Smed) Program For The Flexible Packaging Industry, Jared Unterborn

Theses

The principle objective of this study was to quantify the effectiveness of a management supported process improvement program versus a non-management supported program. The test took two plants with the same machine and a similar job mix were chosen to implement a common process improvement program in the exact same way with the only difference being that one of the plants would have strong involvement from the management team. The data that was used to quantify this theory was an employee survey and data collection. The data showed Plant A's management supported program resulted in a 25% lower changeover time …

Evaluating Trademark Design, Katherine L. Spencer Jan 2011

Evaluating Trademark Design, Katherine L. Spencer

Master's Theses

Trademarks serve as visual representations of a company's name, product, or values. This research sought to determine the effect of the application of human factors principles and graphic design principles on trademark design. A computerized questionnaire was employed to investigate the emotional impact, comprehension, and recall of trademarks based on their type (typographic elements or graphic elements), their subject-content compatibility, and their adherence to human factors and graphic design principles. Trademark type had a significant effect on comprehension of trademarks but no significant effect on emotional impact or recall. Trademarks with high subject-content compatibility and trademarks that use visual metaphor …

Avant Garde In Chinese Art, Curtis Carter Jan 2011

Avant Garde In Chinese Art, Curtis Carter

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

The question that I propose to examine here is to what extent or in what sense there has been an avant-garde presence in Chinese art. And in what sense is the avant-garde present in contemporary Chinese art connected to avant-garde in the west. Before examining the relevance of the avant-garde to developments in Chinese art, it is necessary to provide a brief account of avant-garde in western art.

Protecting Information Privacy, Charles D. Raab, Benjamin J. Goold Jan 2011

Protecting Information Privacy, Charles D. Raab, Benjamin J. Goold

All Faculty Publications

This report for the Equality and Human Rights Commission (the Commission) examines the threats to information privacy that have emerged in recent years, focusing on the activities of the state. It argues that current privacy laws and regulation do not adequately uphold human rights, and that fundamental reform is required. It identifies two principal areas of concern: the state’s handling of personal data, and the use of surveillance by public bodies. The central finding of this report is that the existing approach to the protection of information privacy in the UK is fundamentally flawed, and that there is a pressing …

Smoking And The First Amendment, Kevin Outterson Jan 2011

Smoking And The First Amendment, Kevin Outterson

Faculty Scholarship

On June 22, 2009, President Barack Obama signed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act into law. For the first time, Congress had given the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authority to directly regulate tobacco products, with the aim of improving public health. And indeed, effective tobacco control would be a remarkable public health achievement — and might be possible if the law is allowed to stand. But on November 7, 2011, a federal judge in Washington, D.C., issued a preliminary injunction blocking some of its key provisions as unconstitutional restrictions on commercial speech, and the battle seems likely …

Untangling The Twists Of Habeas Corpus, Larry Yackle Jan 2011

Untangling The Twists Of Habeas Corpus, Larry Yackle

Faculty Scholarship

Take it from me. The one job you don't want is sorting out federal habeas corpus. By all accounts, existing arrangements are an unrelieved disaster. Yet now come Nancy King and Joseph Hoffmann with a valiant effort to set things in order. Their book describes habeas corpus as the writ currently stands, offers explanations of why and how we have come to this pass, and, most important, advances a definite plan of action for habeas in criminal cases-a way to fix what so desperately needs fixing. This is a good book, a valuable book. It is informative, essentially accurate in …

The Second Amendment As Interpreted By Congress And The Court, Sean J. Kealy Jan 2011

The Second Amendment As Interpreted By Congress And The Court, Sean J. Kealy

Faculty Scholarship

In the last two years, the U.S. Supreme Court has finally offered a reasoned interpretation of the Second Amendment. By the slimmest of majorities in District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. City of Chicago, the Supreme Court held that the Second Amendment supplies an individually-held right to bear arms; the government may place reasonable restrictions on gun ownership, but neither the federal government nor an individual state can deprive a person of their right to possess a handgun. Despite many pages of opinion, however, the majority in Heller offers an unsatisfying explanation for why the Second Amendment …

Rebel Without A Clause: The Irrelevance Of Article Vi To Constitutional Supremecy, Gary S. Lawson Jan 2011

Rebel Without A Clause: The Irrelevance Of Article Vi To Constitutional Supremecy, Gary S. Lawson

Faculty Scholarship

With Stare Decisis and Constitutional Text, 1 Jonathan Mitchell has produced what I think is the most interesting and creative textual defense2 (or at least partial defense) to date of the use of horizontal precedent in federal constitutional cases.3 Mitchell’s careful analysis of the Supremacy Clause is fascinating and instructive, and he does an impeccable job of drawing out the implications of his premise that the Supremacy Clause prescribes only a very limited choice-of-law rule—a rule that does not, by its own terms, specifically elevate the Constitution above federal statutes and treaties. His innovative and intriguing framework yields four distinct …

Scalable Cooperative Caching Algorithm Based On Bloom Filters, Nodirjon Siddikov Jan 2011

Scalable Cooperative Caching Algorithm Based On Bloom Filters, Nodirjon Siddikov

Theses

This thesis presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a novel cooperative caching algorithm based on the bloom filter data structure. The new algorithm uses a decentralized approach to resolve the problems that prevent the existing solutions from being scalable. The problems consist of an overloaded manager, a communication overhead among clients, and a memory overhead on the global cache. The new solution reduces the manager load and the communication overhead by distributing the global cache information among cooperating clients. Thus, the manager no longer maintains the global cache. Furthermore, the memory overhead is decreased due to a bloom filter …

Cisg Article 6 And Issues Of Formation: The Problem Of Circularity, Jack M. Graves Jan 2011

Cisg Article 6 And Issues Of Formation: The Problem Of Circularity, Jack M. Graves

Scholarly Works

CISG Article 6 broadly allows parties to exclude the application of the CISG or derogate from its provisions. The application of Article 6 is relatively straightforward when addressing the rights and obligations of the parties, but encounters a challenge of circularity when addressing issues of contract formation. How can the parties agree to exclude or derogate from the application of the CISG if it is not yet clear whether they have agreed to anything at all? This article explores this narrow, but important question. Can the parties effectively exclude the application of the CISG or derogate from its provisions (i.e., …

Hosanna-Tabor And Supreme Court Precedent: An Analysis Of The Ministerial Exception In The Context Of The Supreme Court’S Hands-Off Approach To Religious Doctrine, Samuel J. Levine Jan 2011

Hosanna-Tabor And Supreme Court Precedent: An Analysis Of The Ministerial Exception In The Context Of The Supreme Court’S Hands-Off Approach To Religious Doctrine, Samuel J. Levine

Scholarly Works

The United States Supreme Court‘s review of the decision of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in the case of Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church & School v. EEOC could lead to a major development in the Court‘s Religion Clause jurisprudence. On one level, Hosanna-Tabor presents important questions regarding the interrelationship between employment discrimination laws and the constitutional rights of religious organizations. The narrow issue at the center of the case is the ministerial exception, a doctrine that precludes courts from adjudicating discrimination claims arising out of disputes between religious institutions and their ministerial employees. This Essay …

As I Recall..., Megan Gulland Jan 2011

As I Recall..., Megan Gulland

Theses

This body of work presents a visual memoir of my childhood. Told through these self-portraits, this work captures the essence of my memories. Though the sculptures portray my present age as storyteller, the content comes from my childhood. I am exploring the roots of my love of storytelling by joining my passion for clay with the events of my past. The process of making these portraits, for me, closely reflects the process of growing up. In a similar way, as I built, I learned the limits and possibilities of the clay. Now, even as an adult I reflect on my …

Botnets are large scale networks, which can span across the internet and comprise of computers, which have been infected by malicious software and are centrally controlled from a remote location. Botnets pose a great security risk and their size has been rising drastically over the past few years. The use of botnets by the underground community as a medium for online crime, bundled with their use for profit has shined the spotlight on them. Numerous researchers have proposed and designed infrastructures and frameworks that identify newly formed botnets and their traffic patterns. In this research, the design of a unified …

Service Level Agreements And Virtual Machines, Jordan Caminiti Jan 2011

Service Level Agreements And Virtual Machines, Jordan Caminiti

Theses

Virtual machines (VMs) have been used for some time now, but only now with the newer and faster hardware that is being developed, now it is possible to consolidate many machines down to a single one running multiple instances of operating systems each with their own purpose. For as long as there have been users to use the servers, there has been the need for service level agreements. Now with the virtualization of services comes the need for a new breed of service level agreements. Service level agreements (SLAs) rarely exist for virtual servers unlike physical servers. Since this is …

Evaluation Of Rsl History As A Tool For Assistance In The Development And Evaluation Of Computer Vision Algorithms, Ben Holm Jan 2011

Evaluation Of Rsl History As A Tool For Assistance In The Development And Evaluation Of Computer Vision Algorithms, Ben Holm

Theses

A revision of Recognition Strategy Language (RSL), a domain-specific language for pattern recognition algorithm development, is in development. This language provides several tools for pattern recognition algorithm implementation and analysis, including composition of operations and a detailed history of those operations and their results. This research focuses on that history and shows that for some problems it provides an improvement over traditional methods of gathering information. When designing a pattern recognition algorithm, bookkeeping code in the form of copious logging and tracing code must be written and analyzed in order to test the effectiveness of procedures and parameters. The amount …

Cloth Simulation Using Hardware Tessellation, David Huynh Jan 2011

Cloth Simulation Using Hardware Tessellation, David Huynh

Theses

Cloth simulation has long been a topic of interest in computer graphics since the early works of Terzopoulos et al. Over the years many techniques have been developed to simulate cloth. Though the general concern has been on the physical accuracy of the simulation. As the simulation gets closer to computational sciences the complexity also increases which at times may come at the cost of real-time performance. With newer and more powerful graphics hardware coming out each year, researchers are starting to shy away from the traditional CPU implementation and turning towards the GPU to offload work. As the parallel …
