Density Functional Theory Study On The Electronic Structure Of N- And P-Type Doped Srtio3 At Anodic Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Conditions, Suwit Suthirakun, Salai Cheettu Ammal, Guoliang Xiao, Fanglin Chen, Andreas Heyden, Hans-Conrad Zur Loye

Faculty Publications

The electronic conductivity and thermodynamic stability of mixed n-type and p-type doped SrTiO3 have been investigated at anodic solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) conditions using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In particular, constrained ab initio thermodynamic calculations have been performed to evaluate the phase stability and reducibility of various Nb- and Ga-doped SrTiO3 at synthesized and anodic SOFC conditions. The density of states (DOS) of these materials was analyzed to study the effects of n- and p-doping on the electronic conductivity. In agreement with experimental observations, we find that the transformation from 20% Nb-doped Sr-deficient SrTiO …

Assessment Of Wind Energy Potential Mapping For Peninsular Malaysia / Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, Islam Mohammad Rafiqul

Student Works (2010-2019)

Wind energy generation is growing rapidly worldwide and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. In this study, the most accepted 2-parameter Weibull distribution model has been applied for assessment of wind energy potentiality. The wind directions have been also identified using the WRPLOT View software. The Geographical Information System (GIS), ArcGIS 9.3 software, has been applied to present the predicted monthly and yearly mean wind speed in the form of contour maps. The wind speed data of 15 stations has been collected from the Malaysian Meteorological Department over the period of 2008-2009. Based on the experimental data, …

Using Mathematical Models In The Hotel Industry: Maximizing Revenues Through Discount Strategies, Karin Meuwissen Nov 2011

Using Mathematical Models In The Hotel Industry: Maximizing Revenues Through Discount Strategies, Karin Meuwissen

Theses

Mathematical modeling is an effective tool when maximizing revenue in hotels. With over 120,000 different combinations of variables and elements to consider when maximizing revenue, the process of finding the most lucrative combination can be time consuming and costly to hotels. An effective mathematical model assists in reducing the guesswork involved. This study will demonstrate how the implementation of discounts reduces revenue loss by forcing pre-payment and increasing occupancy levels. In an effort to reduce revenue loss, hotels have implemented many strategies such as using credit card guarantees, demanding pre-payment, and offering discounts, all of which are used to reduce …

Advising Clients After Critical Legal Studies And The Torture Memos, Milan Markovic Nov 2011

Advising Clients After Critical Legal Studies And The Torture Memos, Milan Markovic

Faculty Scholarship

One of the most fundamental tasks attorneys perform is to advise clients as to what the law is. Yet, Model Rule 2.1 (“Rule 2.1”), the chief ethical rule addressing attorneys qua advisors, is rarely enforced in the absence of other ethical violations. Although attorneys comply with the ethical rules for reasons apart from a fear of being sanctioned, it is often against the self-interest of attorneys to “exercise independent professional judgment and render candid advice” as contemplated by Rule 2.1. When attorneys calculate that their legal advice is unlikely to be challenged, they may be prone to advance tendentious legal …

Distributed Reactive Routing For Selective Forwarding Attack Resilience In Wireless Sensor Networks, Jonathan Szymaniak Nov 2011

Distributed Reactive Routing For Selective Forwarding Attack Resilience In Wireless Sensor Networks, Jonathan Szymaniak

Theses

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are an emerging technology that may one day supply real-time information to many services and Internet-based applications. The utility of WSNs relies on the ability to provide valid information, even in the presence of failures or attackers. Current research in the field has identified a large variety of attacks and countermeasures, however, few works address how WSN routing protocols can autonomously react to detected attacks. The works that do provide attack-reactive schemes generally require nodes to coordinate or exchange trust/detection reports. This work aims to maximize data delivery in the presence of selective forwarding attacks with …

Teaching Community College Students Strategies For Learning Unknown Words As They Read Expository Text, Leslie Craigo, Linnea C. Ehri, Manijeh Hart Nov 2011

Teaching Community College Students Strategies For Learning Unknown Words As They Read Expository Text, Leslie Craigo, Linnea C. Ehri, Manijeh Hart

Higher Learning Research Communications

An experiment was conducted to investigate methods that enable college students to learn the meaning of unknown words as they read discipline-specific academic text. Forty-one college students read specific passages aloud during three sessions. Participants were randomly assigned to three vocabulary learning interventions or a control condition. The interventions involved applying context, morphemic, and syntactic strategies; applying definitions; or applying both strategies and definitions to determine word meanings. Word learning and comprehension were measured during the interventions and in a transfer task to assess treatment effects on independent text reading. Results revealed that students in all three intervention groups outperformed …

Interpretation Of Human Rights For The Protection Of The Environment In The European Court Of Human Rights, Svitlana Kravchenko, John E. Bonine Nov 2011

Interpretation Of Human Rights For The Protection Of The Environment In The European Court Of Human Rights, Svitlana Kravchenko, John E. Bonine

McGeorge School of Law Global Center for Business and Development Annual Symposium

Moderator: Rachael Salcido, Professor of Law, University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law

The Stockholm Declaration, adopted at the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, explicitly recognized the link between human rights and protection of the environment, proclaiming that “Both aspects of man’s environment, the natural and the man-made, are essential to his well-being and to the enjoyment of basic human rights—even the right to life itself.” More recent international developments point to the potential utility of using human rights norms as a catalyst for actions to protect the environment at the state level. Indeed, many countries …

Cftc V. Gibraltar Monetary Corp. And Vicarious Liability Under The Commodity Exchange Act, Jason E. Friedman Nov 2011

Cftc V. Gibraltar Monetary Corp. And Vicarious Liability Under The Commodity Exchange Act, Jason E. Friedman

Fordham Law Review

This Comment analyzes CFTC v. Gibraltar Monetary Corp., a 2009 decision in which the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit introduced a control requirement into the Commodity Exchange Act's vicarious liability provision. In so doing, the court rejected the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission's long-held totality of the circumstances approach, in which any one factor, including control, is not dispositive of an agency relationship. This decision has created an undesirable situation in which retail foreign exchange dealers and futures commission merchants need not investigate the character of their introducing entities before retaining them, allowing them to easily avoid …

How The Establishment Clause Can Influence Substantive Due Process: Adultery Bans After Lawrence, Andrew D. Cohen Nov 2011

How The Establishment Clause Can Influence Substantive Due Process: Adultery Bans After Lawrence, Andrew D. Cohen

Fordham Law Review

Criminal adultery bans, despite widespread transgression and lax enforcement, remain on the books in a substantial minority of states. The landmark Lawrence v. Texas decision casts doubt on all state interference with consensual sexual activity among adults, including adultery bans. Additionally, adultery bans on their face implicate the Establishment Clause, due to adultery bans' and marriage's roots in religious doctrine and religiosity. This Note examines the constitutionality of adultery bans after Lawrence v. Texas, and proposes a novel approach to substantive due process analysis that applies Establishment Clause values. In proposing what this Note dubs the "Establishment Clause prism," through …

Consider The Source: When The Harasser Is The Boss Nov 2011

Consider The Source: When The Harasser Is The Boss

Fordham Law Review

In Consider the Source, Susan Grover and Kim Piro argue for a change in the analysis that courts apply to determine whether actionable workplace harassment has occurred. They identify a gap in current doctrine, which allows courts to ignore the status of the harasser as co-worker or supervisor. The authors argue that harassment at the hands of a supervisor is necessarily more severe and pervasive than the same harassment by a co- worker. As a result, they recommend that the harasser's identity as a supervisor or co-worker be treated as a necessary consideration when courts assess whether actionable harassment has …

The Federal Information Security Management Act Of 2002: A Potemkin Village, Daniel M. White Nov 2011

The Federal Information Security Management Act Of 2002: A Potemkin Village, Daniel M. White

Fordham Law Review

Due to the daunting possibilities of cyberwarfare, and the ease with which cyberattacks may be conducted, the United Nations has warned that the next world war could be initiated through worldwide cyberattacks between countries. In response to the growing threat of cyberwarfare and the increasing importance of information security, Congress passed the Federal Information Security Management Act of 2002 (FISMA). FISMA recognizes the importance of information security to the national economic and security interests of the United States. However, this Note argues that FISMA has failed to significantly bolster information security, primarily because FISMA treats information security as a technological …

Preemption, Patchwork Immigration Laws, And The Potential For Brown Sundown Towns, Maria Marulanda Nov 2011

Preemption, Patchwork Immigration Laws, And The Potential For Brown Sundown Towns, Maria Marulanda

Fordham Law Review

The raging debate about comprehensive immigration reform is ripe ground to overhaul federal exclusivity in the immigration context and move toward a cooperative federal and state-local model. The proliferation of immigration-related ordinances at the state and local level reflects “lawful” attempts to enforce immigration law to conserve limited resources for citizens and legal residents. Although the federal immigration statutes contemplate state and local involvement, the broad federal preemption model used to analyze immigration laws displaces many state-local ordinances, resulting in frustration at the inability to enforce the community’s resolve that is manifested through violence against Latino immigrants. Broad federal preemption …

Reconciling Originalism And The History Of The Public Use Clause, Emily A. Johnson Nov 2011

Reconciling Originalism And The History Of The Public Use Clause, Emily A. Johnson

Fordham Law Review

The history of the Fifth Amendment’s Takings Clause is virtually nonexistent. For at least the last century, the U.S. Supreme Court has interpreted its public use language broadly, allowing takings for the purposes of rectifying urban blight, facilitating land redistribution, and most recently, in Kelo v. City of New London, promoting economic benefit. In that case, Justice Thomas dissented vigorously, arguing that the Kelo Court had strayed from the original meaning of public use and urging it to return to requiring actual use by the public when property is condemned. In light of Justice Thomas’s argument that the Court had …

The More You Gain, The More You Lose: Sentencing Insider Trading Under The U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, Danielle Demasi Chattin Nov 2011

The More You Gain, The More You Lose: Sentencing Insider Trading Under The U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, Danielle Demasi Chattin

Fordham Law Review

Insider trading defendants are sentenced under the general economic crime provisions of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines. These provisions provide a chart, which prescribes a gradually increasing offense level based on “the gain resulting from the offense.” Only two circuit courts have yet to define “gain” for sentencing purposes, resulting in a split in methodology. Due to the tremendous weight the Guidelines place on the amount of “gain” when calculating a sentence, the potential result of using different methodologies to calculate “gain” is the difference between freedom and years of incarceration. This Note examines the problems involved with both of the …

Sex, Threats, And Absent Victims: The Lessons Of Regina V. Bedingfield For Modern Confrontation And Domestic Violence Cases, Aviva Orenstein Nov 2011

Sex, Threats, And Absent Victims: The Lessons Of Regina V. Bedingfield For Modern Confrontation And Domestic Violence Cases, Aviva Orenstein

Fordham Law Review

In 2004, Crawford v. Washington, authored by Justice Scalia, revolutionized the law of confrontation by requiring that, aside from two discrete exceptions, all testimonial statements (those made with the expectation that they will serve to prosecute the accused) be subject to cross-examination. This new interpretation of the Sixth Amendment’s Confrontation Clause has profoundly affected domestic violence cases, making it much harder to prosecute them successfully. Although Justice Scalia’s approach to confrontation is new, it is strikingly similar to the analysis in Regina v. Bedingfield, a notorious English murder case, which excluded from the evidence an alleged statement by the murder …
