How Does Improved Access To Clean Water Impact Rural Communities? Evaluating Impact Of Water Projects In The Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District In Ghana, Josephine-Mary O. Sam
How Does Improved Access To Clean Water Impact Rural Communities? Evaluating Impact Of Water Projects In The Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District In Ghana, Josephine-Mary O. Sam
Natural Resources
Research has shown that rural water programs benefit communities by promoting women's empowerment, and improving children's education and the health of residents. However, the tendency for such programs to be short-lived (as water pumps break down and villages are unable to repair them) erodes any benefits and sets villages back on the path toward using unsafe and inconvenient water sources. The incidence of failed rural water projects has prompted calls for a more holistic approach to addressing rural water supply issues. Two development organizations, the Nyarkoa Foundation (NF) and the Rural Education and Development Program (REDEP), implemented a water program …
Remote Sensing Of Browning Trends In The Alaskan Boreal Forest, Mary Elizabeth Parent
Remote Sensing Of Browning Trends In The Alaskan Boreal Forest, Mary Elizabeth Parent
Forest Sciences
Vegetation health can be monitored using a time series of remotely sensed images by calculating the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). We assessed temporal trends throughout an NDVI time series with three sensors: Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Landsat Thematic Mapper/Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (TM/ETM+). There has been debate over the reliability of AVHRR sensor NDVI data in the circumboreal region. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to first use MODIS and Landsat TM/ETM+ data and assess declining trends within twelve Landsat scene footprints across boreal Alaska and second use Landsat …
Regional Modeling Of Greenland's Outlet Glaciers With The Parallel Ice Sheet Model, Daniella N. Della-Giustina
Regional Modeling Of Greenland's Outlet Glaciers With The Parallel Ice Sheet Model, Daniella N. Della-Giustina
Physics
The most recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change cites ice sheet dynamics as the greatest source of uncertainty for predicting current and future rates of sea level rise. This has prompted the development and use of ice sheet models that are capable of simulating the flow and evolution of ice sheets and their corresponding sea level contribution. In the Arctic, the Greenland ice sheet appears to be responding to a warming climate more quickly than expected. In order to determine sea level contribution from Greenland, it is necessary to capture the regional dynamics of the fast flowing …
The Fate Of Nitrogen Pollution In High-Latitude Winter: Investigations Using A 1-D Photochemical Model, Patrick L. Joyce
The Fate Of Nitrogen Pollution In High-Latitude Winter: Investigations Using A 1-D Photochemical Model, Patrick L. Joyce
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Simulations using a 1-D photochemical model were performed to analyze the fate of NOx pollution in a high-latitude winter environment. Modeled pollution emissions were constrained by observations from downtown Fairbanks and the model reproduced dilution of NOx on timescales in agreement with field measurements on the edge and outside of the urban area of Fairbanks. The model was updated from previous versions to include calculations of reactions of N₂O₅ on aerosol particles and an empirically-derived value for dry deposition velocity of N₂O₅ to the snowpack, which acts as a competing loss of N₂O₅. It was found that dry deposition of …
A Darker Shade Of Blue: From Public Servant To Professional Deviant; Law Enforcement's Special Operations Culture, Louis Scott Silverii
A Darker Shade Of Blue: From Public Servant To Professional Deviant; Law Enforcement's Special Operations Culture, Louis Scott Silverii
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
The culture of law enforcement is an all or nothing proposition with no gray area where membership into this society is concerned. You are either “on the job” or you are not. Even references among officers to “the job” indicate there is only one job. Likened to a secret handshake, that initial phrase if answered correctly opens the door to instant fraternal acceptance, get out of violation passes, and the many other assumed privileges of brotherhood. Manning (1980) describes the powerful mystification of policing as the “sacred canopy”. He further asserts that “the police role conveys a sense of …
An Experimental Study Of Formation Of Circulation Patterns In Laminar Unsteady Driven Cavity Flows Using Particle Image Velocimeter (Piv) Techniques, Jon Farkas
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
An experimental study is conducted to determine the velocity fields, from development to steady state, in a square enclosure due to movement of a constant velocity lid using Particle Image Velocitmetry (PIV). Experiments were conducted with water, seeded with hollow glass sphere particles 10 microns in diameter, at three different lid velocities leading to Reynolds numbers in the high laminar to transitional range. Driven Cavity Flow is a classic fluid dynamics case often used for benchmarking of computational codes. Previous work has primarily focused on improving computational codes, experimental work is lacking and focused on obtaining steady state readings. …
Multivariate Models And Algorithms For Systems Biology, Lipi Rani Acharya
Multivariate Models And Algorithms For Systems Biology, Lipi Rani Acharya
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Rapid advances in high-throughput data acquisition technologies, such as microarraysand next-generation sequencing, have enabled the scientists to interrogate the expression levels of tens of thousands of genes simultaneously. However, challenges remain in developingeffective computational methods for analyzing data generated from such platforms. In thisdissertation, we address some of these challenges. We divide our work into two parts. Inthe first part, we present a suite of multivariate approaches for a reliable discovery of geneclusters, often interpreted as pathway components, from molecular profiling data with replicated measurements. We translate our goal into learning an optimal correlation structure from replicated complete and incomplete …
Validation Of Seaplane Impact Load Theory And Structural Analysis Of The Martin 270, Carrie Sell
Validation Of Seaplane Impact Load Theory And Structural Analysis Of The Martin 270, Carrie Sell
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Flight and drop tests of the Martin 270 (M270) seaplane were conducted in 1955. Theoretical and empirical pressures were determined by use of Wagner’s theory and also by the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). The pressure results from the experimental tests on the hull were compared with pressures calculated from Wagner’s theory to determine how well the theory correlated with the measured pressures. The experimental pressure data was also compared with the CFR results to determine how the current industry standard of estimating impact loads compares with actual pressures a seaplane is subjected to.
Using the structural design and geometry …
Development Of A Novel Electron-Transfer Secondary Reaction Matrix, Characterization Of The Site–Specificity Of Novel Bilin-Lyase, And Fundulus Grandis Protein Expression Investigation Using Mass Spectrometry, Mohamed N. Boutaghou
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Reported in this dissertation are the results of investigations performed at the New Orleans Center for Mass Spectrometry at the University of New Orleans. The projects that are detailed in the coming pages take on a variety of subjects, but a common thread is that each employs matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry to solve a problem. Fundamental aspects of MALDI in-plume ionization are implicated in the introduction of a newly developed electron-transfer secondary ionization matrix. The remaining projects are related to the ever expanding field of proteomics. Mass spectrometry was used to investigate the site specificity of a newly …

Identification Of Power System Stability Using Relevant Modes, Rogers Whitlock Jr
Identification Of Power System Stability Using Relevant Modes, Rogers Whitlock Jr
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this investigation is to identify appropriate location of capacitor banks and sources of reactive power by studying power system stability in the vicinity of system equilibrium states. The locations for reactive power sources are determined by identifying those modes of the system that participate most in the system behavior in general and in dictating the final state of the system after experiencing faults or disturbances. To identify the relevant modes of the system that participate most in the system dynamic, we shall make use of modal and participation analysis for different system conditions. We also apply modal …

Black Policemen In Jim Crow New Orleans, Vanessa Flores-Robert
Black Policemen In Jim Crow New Orleans, Vanessa Flores-Robert
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Although historians have done in-‐depth researched on Black police in the South, before the Civil War and during Reconstruction, they seldom assess black policemen’s role in New Orleans between the Battle of Liberty Place and 1913. The men discussed here argue that despite the hardening racial attitudes in Post-‐ Reconstruction South, in New Orleans opportunity still existed for Blacks to serve in positions of authority, perhaps a heritage of the city’s earlier tri-‐partite racial order. The information obtained from primary sources such as police manuals, beat books, and newspapers, counters the widely held belief that African American presence in the …
The Women And Peace Hypothesis In The Age Of Nancy Pelosi: Can Female Leaders Bring About World Peace?, Jeannette Haynie
The Women And Peace Hypothesis In The Age Of Nancy Pelosi: Can Female Leaders Bring About World Peace?, Jeannette Haynie
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The women and peace hypothesis suggests that women are more likely than men to choose peace and compromise over violent conflict, whether as ordinary citizens or as government leaders. I test this concept by analyzing the percent of women in the parliaments and executive cabinets of 93 nations over a 31-year-period, comparing these figures to the presence of violent interstate conflicts for each country-year. Controlling for wealth, democratic status, national capabilities, military expenditures, and contiguity, I find moderate support for the women and peace hypothesis. This support continues when democratic system type is interacted with the measured office. While women …

Animal Companionship And Identity Construction In The Middle English "Ywain And Gawain", Robert E. Byers
Animal Companionship And Identity Construction In The Middle English "Ywain And Gawain", Robert E. Byers
English
As a relatively recent field within literary cultural studies, "animal studies" has the potential to ask sophisticated new questions about the central and privileged place of the humanist "cogito." Through an examination of the human-animal companionship found in the Middle English romance "Ywain and Gawain", this thesis aims to contribute to the project of animal studies by tracing how questions about humanity and animality both construct and deconstruct a subject's identity. In the poem, Ywain, a knight in Arthur's court, is exiled from society and befriends a lion, who travels and fights alongside him. The dynamics of their bond highlight …
Hydrographic Controls And Seasonal Variability On The Carbonate System In The Northern Gulf Of Alaska, Kristen L. Shake
Hydrographic Controls And Seasonal Variability On The Carbonate System In The Northern Gulf Of Alaska, Kristen L. Shake
Marine Biology
The Northern Gulf of Alaska (GOA) supports a dynamic and economically viable marine ecosystem. One notable potential stressor to this ecosystem is ocean acidification (OA), a byproduct of the increased uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO₂) by the ocean. Measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) were made along the continental shelf of the northern GOA and in Prince William Sound (PWS) and used to calculate seawater pH and the saturation state of aragonite Warp). Observations showed a high degree of seasonal variability in DIC concentrations in surface and bottom waters. TA was depleted relative to DIC …
Factors That Contribute To Susceptibility Of The Placebo/Nocebo Effect In Experimentally Induced Ischemic Arm Pain, Steve T. Brewer
Factors That Contribute To Susceptibility Of The Placebo/Nocebo Effect In Experimentally Induced Ischemic Arm Pain, Steve T. Brewer
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Placebo’s (positive expectancies producing positive outcomes) and nocebo’s (negative expectancies producing negative outcomes) are real and measurable effects. Real as these effects may be, predicting individuals that may be susceptible to placebo/nocebo effects has been inconsistent. The present study examined whether measures designed to assess somatization (MSPQ), catastrophizing (PCS) and childhood trauma (CTQ) would predict placebo and nocebo membership. In addition, measures designed to assess anxiety (ASI) anxiety about pain (PASS) and depression (BDI) were evaluated to determine whether anxiety or depression mediates responsiveness. The Hargreaves Thermal Withdrawal test and the submaximal effort tourniquet technique were employed as pain vehicles …
Junior Faculty Perceptions Of Their Doctoral Level Teaching Preparation: A Cross Disciplinary Examination, Franz Reneau
Junior Faculty Perceptions Of Their Doctoral Level Teaching Preparation: A Cross Disciplinary Examination, Franz Reneau
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
It seems reasonable to assume that the realization of the doctoral degree denotes that one is proficient in college teaching. However, the literature indicates that doctoral programs are failing to adequately prepare doctoral students for teaching in collegiate settings. The seminal work on doctoral student experiences suggests that doctoral programs are adequately preparing doctoral students for their research function, but concerns emerge around teacher preparation. Four bodies of literature inform this study: (a) the literature on the teaching role in higher education (b) the literature on doctoral students’ experiences as it relates to their teaching preparation (c) the literature on …
Investigating The Thermal Stability And Cation Ordering In Layered Cathode Lixmo2 (X ≤ 1; M = Co, Mn, Ni) Materials For Li-Ion Rechargeable Batteries And Studying The Ferroelectric Properties Of Linbo3 Nanoparticles, Debasish Mohanty
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, transition metal oxides have drawn extensive attention because of their wide application in electronic, memory, battery, informatics, and optoelectronics devices. In this dissertation, we have studied two different types of oxide materials which are technologically important: LiMO 2 (M = Co, Mn, Ni), has served as cathode materials in the rechargeable battery, and LiNbO3, has wide application in ferroelectric devices such as electronics, non-volatile memories, and thin film capacitors. LiMO2 was synthesized and characterized to understand the correlation between capacity fading and thermal stability relating to the microstructures. Our results showed that delithiated (charged) LiCoO2, forms a …
Nonresponse Bias In Online Course Evaluations, Cassandra Jones
Nonresponse Bias In Online Course Evaluations, Cassandra Jones
Dissertations, 2014-2019
Recently more universities have started administering course evaluations online. With the process no longer in the classroom, some students decide not to complete their course evaluations during their own time, resulting in concerns about online course evaluation results being biased because of lack of response. This study examined course evaluation results at a small diverse mid-Atlantic Catholic university. A cross-classified random effects model was used to capture student responses across all of their courses. Nonresponse bias was examined by determining predictors of online course evaluation ratings and participation. Variables predicting both participation and ratings were considered to be a potential …

Trust Betrayed: Counseling Girls Who Have Been Sexually Abused By Educators, Courtney Paige Boyd
Educational Specialist, 2009-2019
Educator sexual abuse is rarely discussed, although literature shows that it occurs at an alarming rate. This paper discusses the literature that does exist about educator sexual abuse, as well as the prevalence of this type of sexual abuse. Aspects of the trauma are discussed including grooming, blaming the victim, and the guilt and denial associated with the abuse. The paper concludes with recommendations for counselors who are working with girls who have experienced educator sexual abuse. Inner child work, guided imagery, and trauma-focused cognitive behavior therapy are referenced.
The Role Of The Nascent Polypeptide-Associated Complex In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Paul T. Arsenovic
The Role Of The Nascent Polypeptide-Associated Complex In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Paul T. Arsenovic
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
The nascent polypeptide-associated complex (NAC) is a highly conserved protein complex known to play an important role in the development of metazoan organisms, but its molecular function is not well understood. Recent evidence from experiments using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as model supported the hypothesis that the NAC is either a chaperone or a component of the cytosolic chaperone network that interacts with nascent peptides emerging from the ribosome. We tested this model in C. elegans and found that the homologues of the NAC , icd-1 and icd-2, behave like chaperones in the worm. Lack of icd-1 or icd-2 altered the worms …
Development Of A Methodology For Dormitory Energy Load Estimation And Analysis, John Michael Real
Development Of A Methodology For Dormitory Energy Load Estimation And Analysis, John Michael Real
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
In recent years interest in reducing energy consumption at the building levels has been increasing, especially in the higher education sector. Many examples exist of higher education institutions reducing their environmental impact through energy consumption reductions, however the majority of these are anecdotal examples and it is difficult to replicate these initiatives at other institutions, either due to resource constraints, financial constraints, or a lack of reproducible methodology. This issue is further compounded by the fact that a generalized methodology does not exist for the purposes of estimating building energy loads, especially in dormitories in the absence of expensive and …
Synthesis Of Resveratrol Esters And Aliphatic Acids., Stanley Mofor Jing
Synthesis Of Resveratrol Esters And Aliphatic Acids., Stanley Mofor Jing
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Resveratrol (RV) is a naturally occurring phytoalexin of the stilbenoid family produced by some plant species, and present in grape skin, peanuts, and red wine. It has been found to exhibit anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-aging, cardio protective, and anti-oxidant properties. Bioavailability is a huge setback that limits the potentials of RV. As a result, efforts have been made to design and synthesize RV esters and aliphatic acids in an attempt to increase its bioavailability, solubility in water, and possibly improving its biological activities. Resveratrol esters, 3,5,4'-triacetyloxystilbene (2) and Methyl 1,1',1''- (3,4',5-stilbenyl)-1,6-hexanedioate (3) have been synthesized. Compound 3 is a new …
