Grading Practices: Teachers' Considerations Of Academic And Non-Academic Factors, Diana Yesbeck Nov 2011

Grading Practices: Teachers' Considerations Of Academic And Non-Academic Factors, Diana Yesbeck

Theses and Dissertations

In the current era of student accountability, coupled with high-stakes testing, schools have focused on the alignment of standardized curriculums and assessments. However, developing standardized grading practices are still under examination. Grading serves as an important responsibility, yet many teachers still find the process a challenge of determining which academic and non-academic factors correctly represent student achievement. This qualitative study was designed to examine the grading factors teachers consider when determining student final grades. Middle school language arts teachers from one mid-sized suburban school district in Virginia participated in qualitative interviews. The interviews addressed the following topics: (1) the purposes …

A Comparison Of Bss Algorithms In Harsh Environments, Christopher Osterwise, Steven Grant Nov 2011

A Comparison Of Bss Algorithms In Harsh Environments, Christopher Osterwise, Steven Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper compares the performance of several blind source separation (BSS) algorithms in environments of varying reverberation, noise, microphone spacing, and sparsity. of particular interest are two frequency domain algorithms: one Cascaded ICA with Intervention Alignment (CICAIA), and one algorithm by Pham, Servire, and Boumaraf. the former is found to work exceptionally well in high noise, low microphone spacing environments. the latter proves to work exceptionally well in high SNR and moderate- to widely spaced arrays. in addition, while the literature on BSS algorithms is extensive, their performance under varying noise conditions has not been widely explored. Also, though usually …

Sustainable Cooperation In Global Climate Policy: Specific Formulas And Emission Targets To Build On Copenhagen And Cancun, Valentina Bosetti, Jeffrey Frankel Nov 2011

Sustainable Cooperation In Global Climate Policy: Specific Formulas And Emission Targets To Build On Copenhagen And Cancun, Valentina Bosetti, Jeffrey Frankel

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We offer a framework to assign quantitative allocations of emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), across countries, one budget period at a time. Under the two-part plan: (i) China, India, and other developing countries accept targets at Business as Usual (BAU) in the coming budget period, the same period in which the US first agrees to cuts below BAU; and (ii) all countries are asked in the future to make further cuts in accordance with a common numerical formula to all. The formula is expressed as the sum of a Progressive Reductions Factor, a Latecomer Catch-up Factor, and a Gradual Equalization …

Adaptation Can Help Mitigation: An Integrated Approach To Post-2012 Climate Policy, Francesco Bosello, Carlo Carraro, Enrica De Cian Nov 2011

Adaptation Can Help Mitigation: An Integrated Approach To Post-2012 Climate Policy, Francesco Bosello, Carlo Carraro, Enrica De Cian

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The latest round of international negotiations in Copenhagen led to a set of commitments on emission reductions which are unlikely to stabilise global warming below or around 2°C. As a consequence, in the absence of additional ambitious policy measures, adaptation will be needed to address climate-related damages. What is the role of adaptation in this setting? How is it optimally allocated across regions and time? To address these questions, this paper analyses the optimal mix of adaptation and mitigation expenditures in a cost-effective setting in which countries cooperate to achieve a long-term stabilisation target (550 CO2-eq). It uses an Integrated …

Assessing Association For Bivariate Survival Data With Interval Sampling: A Copula Model Approach With Application To Aids Study, Hong Zhu, Mei-Cheng Wang Nov 2011

Assessing Association For Bivariate Survival Data With Interval Sampling: A Copula Model Approach With Application To Aids Study, Hong Zhu, Mei-Cheng Wang

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In disease surveillance systems or registries, bivariate survival data are typically collected under interval sampling. It refers to a situation when entry into a registry is at the time of the first failure event (e.g., HIV infection) within a calendar time interval, the time of the initiating event (e.g., birth) is retrospectively identified for all the cases in the registry, and subsequently the second failure event (e.g., death) is observed during the follow-up. Sampling bias is induced due to the selection process that the data are collected conditioning on the first failure event occurs within a time interval. Consequently, the …

Climate Change And Individual Decision Making: An Examination Of Knowledge, Risk Perception, Self-Interest And Their Interplay, Francesca Pongiglione Nov 2011

Climate Change And Individual Decision Making: An Examination Of Knowledge, Risk Perception, Self-Interest And Their Interplay, Francesca Pongiglione

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In this essay, three separate yet interconnected components of pro-environmental decision making are considered: (a) knowledge, in the form of basic scientific understanding and procedural knowledge, (b) risk perception, as it relates to an individual’s direct experience of climate change and (c) self-interest, either monetary or status-driven. Drawing on a variety of sources in public policy, psychology, and economics, I examine the role of these concepts in inducing or discouraging pro-environmental behavior. Past researches have often overemphasized the weight of just one of those variables in the decision making. I argue, instead, that none of them alone is capable of …

The Specialization Of Foreign Assistance In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kevin Michael Richardson Nov 2011

The Specialization Of Foreign Assistance In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kevin Michael Richardson

Theses

This study uses time-series cross-sectional logistic and OLS regressions to analyze data on foreign assistance and governance in Sub-Saharan Africa to determine the impact of different methods of foreign aid on democracy and democratic characteristics in Sub-Saharan Africa. Even though all foreign assistance has the end goal of promoting democratic growth, different aid targeted sectors have varying effects on democracy. The research has found that aid targeting social infrastructure, specifically health and government sectors, in Sub-Saharan Africa has a substantial, positive effect on democracy and democratic characteristics while economic infrastructure aid has no effect. This analysis could have an impact …

Deweyan Tools For Inquiry And The Epistemological Context Of Critical Pedagogy, Peter J. Nelsen, Jayson O. Seaman Nov 2011

Deweyan Tools For Inquiry And The Epistemological Context Of Critical Pedagogy, Peter J. Nelsen, Jayson O. Seaman

Kinesiology

This article develops the notion of resistance as articulated in the literature of critical pedagogy as being both culturally sponsored and cognitively manifested. To do so, the authors draw upon John Dewey's conception of tools for inquiry. Dewey provides a way to conceptualize student resistance not as a form of willful disputation, but instead as a function of socialization into cultural models of thought that actively truncate inquiry. In other words, resistance can be construed as the cognitive and emotive dimensions of the ongoing failure of institutions to provide ideas that help individuals both recognize social problems and imagine possible …

Proteomic Signatures Of Human Oral Epithelial Cells In Hiv-Infected Subjects, Elizabeth Yohannes, Santosh K. Ghosh, Bin Jiang, Thomas S. Mccormick, Aaron Weinberg, Edward Hill, Faddy Faddoul, Mark R. Chance Nov 2011

Proteomic Signatures Of Human Oral Epithelial Cells In Hiv-Infected Subjects, Elizabeth Yohannes, Santosh K. Ghosh, Bin Jiang, Thomas S. Mccormick, Aaron Weinberg, Edward Hill, Faddy Faddoul, Mark R. Chance

Faculty Scholarship

The oral epithelium, the most abundant structural tissue lining the oral mucosa, is an important line of defense against infectious microorganisms. HIV infected subjects on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) are susceptible to comorbid viral, bacterial and fungal infections in the oral cavity. To provide an assessment of the molecular alterations of oral epithelia potentially associated with susceptibility to comorbid infections in such subjects, we performed various proteomic studies on over twenty HIV infected and healthy subjects. In a discovery phase two Dimensional Difference Gel Electrophoresis (2-D DIGE) analyses of human oral gingival epithelial cell (HOEC) lysates were carried out; …
