Teaching Tactual Discrimination Of Braille Characters To Beginning Braille Readers, Karen A. Toussaint Jan 2011

Teaching Tactual Discrimination Of Braille Characters To Beginning Braille Readers, Karen A. Toussaint

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We taught three children with visual impairments to make tactual discriminations of the braille alphabet within a matching-to-sample format. That is, we presented participants with a braille character as a sample stimulus and they were to select the matching stimulus from an array of three comparisons. In order to minimize participant errors, we arranged braille characters into training sets in which the target and non-target stimuli in the comparison arrays were initially maximally different in terms of the number of dots comprising each character. As participants mastered these discriminations, we then increased the similarity between target and non-target comparisons (i.e., …

In The Ruins Of Zine Pedagogy: A Narrative Study Of Teaching With Zines, Karin H. Degravelles Jan 2011

In The Ruins Of Zine Pedagogy: A Narrative Study Of Teaching With Zines, Karin H. Degravelles

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study considers the educational significance of zines—small circulation, self-published magazines—by asking how educators who teach with zines encounter and negotiate zine pedagogy. Though the literature on zines and teaching describes many potential benefits, it also describes contradictions and failures, with some researchers even going so far as to claim that “zines do not belong in classrooms” (Guzzetti, Elliott, & Welsch, 2010, p. 71). Through this dissertation, I investigate and complicate these claims by examining the stories and perspectives of teacher/zinesters—educators who teach or have taught with zines in a classroom setting. The project is situated within theories of the …

Three Essays On The Labor Allocation Decisions Of The Modern Farm Family, Jeremy Michael D'Antoni Jan 2011

Three Essays On The Labor Allocation Decisions Of The Modern Farm Family, Jeremy Michael D'Antoni

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation is to address the role of government payments in the allocation of off-farm labor through three essays. Government payments have been a part of agriculture since 1933 and at no time has the government stated a policy objective of decreasing the agricultural labor force. Using time series data and new econometric techniques, the first essay finds agricultural policy may have an unintended impact on labor migration. Specifically, we find that government payments increased labor migration from the farm. From 1939 to 2007, increased direct government payments resulted in greater migration of labor from agriculture. The …

Towards An Ethics Of Otherness: Re-Considering Birth, Time, And Silence In Education, Hillary Procknow Jan 2011

Towards An Ethics Of Otherness: Re-Considering Birth, Time, And Silence In Education, Hillary Procknow

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The notion of the self in Western literature has overwhelmingly focused on separation and individuality, and has conflated knowing with being. This work proposes to retell the story of the modern Western individual through the themes of birth, time, and silence (as they represent the lifecycle), in an effort to locate the self as one who is called forth by the other, as discussed in the works of Emmanuel Levinas. By re-theorizing the moments of birth, time, and silence as moments of living for the other, rather than as moments in which selves become more autonomous, the self can be …

Catalytic Process For The Conversion Of Synthesis Gas To Ethanol For Use As An Alternative Fuel, Nitin Kumar

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Higher alcohols are increasing as a proportion of the transportation fuel market, and can be used as neat fuels, or as blends with conventional fuels. For a number of reasons, these C2+-alcohols will be of interest in the foreseeable future. Large-scale production of higher alcohols will likely be carried out via syngas, which can be produced from a number of feedstocks, including coal, natural gas and biomass. Rhodium-based catalysts have been found to be the most active/selective for higher alcohols. However, the literature shows that the yields of C2+-alcohols that can be achieved with current catalysts, even the most active/selective, …

Does School Context Matter For The Low Ses Student? Investigating The Causal Effects Of School Context On College Enrollment, Aaryn Ward

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on school context and the whether or not “good schools” matter for low SES students. Existing research and theory do not provide consistent expectations regarding the performance of low SES students in middle/high SES school environments. To untangle the relationship among socioeconomic background, the school setting, and educational outcomes, I use a large, longitudinal, nationally-representative dataset, The Education Longitudinal Survey of 2002 (ELS:2002) to analyze enrollment in postsecondary institutions, institutional selectivity, and future educational expectations. Models use weighted regression with causal effect estimators to assess a potential causal effect of “good schools” for low SES students. While …

Applying The Rules Of Discovery To Information Uncovered About Jurors, Thaddeus A. Hoffmeister

School of Law Faculty Publications

As more and more personal information is placed online, attorneys are increasingly turning to the internet to investigate and research jurors. In certain jurisdictions, the practice has become fairly commonplace. One prominent trial consultant has gone so far as to claim, “Anyone who doesn’t make use of [internet searches] is bordering on malpractice.” While this may somewhat overstate the importance of investigating jurors online, it nonetheless demonstrates just how routine the practice has become. Aside from increased acceptance among practitioners, courts have both approved of and encouraged online investigation of jurors.

While many view this practice as a benefit to …

Comparative Proteome And Qpcr Analysis Of The Sugarcane Reaction To Leaf Scald Caused By Xanthomonas Albilineans, Freddy Fernando Garces-Obando

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Leaf scald is an important disease of sugarcane caused by Xanthomonas albilineans (Xa). Leaf scald is controlled by the development and planting of resistant cultivars. However, erratic symptom expression makes conventional screening for resistance difficult. In addition, the mechanisms of resistance to leaf scald are not completely understood. Real-time, quantitative polymerase-chain-reaction (qPCR) assays were developed utilizing SYBR Green for a highly sensitive detection method or a TaqMan probe to quantify Xa populations in infected plants. Xa populations detected by qPCR followed similar trends to disease severity ratings and vascular infection results for two resistant and two susceptible cultivars under greenhouse …

Next Generation Multi-Scale Quantum Simulations For Strongly Correlated Materials, Shuxiang Yang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis represents our effort to develop the next generation multi-scale quantum simulation methods suitable for strongly-correlated materials, where complicated phase-diagrams prevail, suggesting complicated underlying physics. We first give a detailed description of the parquet formalism. With its help, different approximate methods can be unified and a hierarchy of approximate methods with different accuracies and computational complexity can thus be designed. Next, we present a numerical solution of the parquet approximation. Results on the Hubbard model are compared to those obtained from Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC), FLuctuation EXchange (FLEX), and self-consistent second-order approximation methods. The comparison shows a satisfactory …
