Consequences Of Elitism, Ishrat Husain Dr. Nov 2011

Consequences Of Elitism, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

In my book Pakistan: The Economy of an Elitist State, I presented the thesis that one per cent of Pakistan`s population the elitist class had contrived to rig the market and hijacked the state for their own benefit. This small minority was able to enjoy its unjust accumulation of wealth in the midst of widespread poverty. Little did I realise that this phenomenon would spread from Tunis to Sanaa and from Sydney to Seattle. The Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street movement may have originated for ostensibly different reasons but their root cause is the same growing disenchantment of the …

Programmers And Forensic Analyses: Accusers Under The Confrontation Clause, Karen Neville Nov 2011

Programmers And Forensic Analyses: Accusers Under The Confrontation Clause, Karen Neville

Duke Law & Technology Review

Recent Supreme Court cases involving the Confrontation Clause have strengthened defendants’ right to face their accusers. Bullcoming v. New Mexico explored the question of whether the testimony of the technician who performs a forensic analysis may be substituted by that of another analyst, and the Court held that producing a surrogate witness who was not sufficiently involved in the analysis violates the confrontation right.

The presumption of infallible technology is fading, and courts may soon realize programmers have greater influence over the ultimate outcome of forensic tests than do the technicians who rely on such analytical tools. The confrontation right, …

A Literary Approach To Teaching English Language In A Multi – Cultural Class - Room, Sanju Choudhary

Higher Learning Research Communications

Literature is not generally considered as a coherent branch of the curriculum in relation to language – development in either mother tongue or foreign language – teaching. As teachers of English in Multi cultural Indian class rooms we come across students with varying degree of competence in English language learning. Though, language learning is a natural process for natives but the Students of other languages put in colossal efforts to learn it. Despite their sincere efforts they face challenges regarding Pronunciation, Spelling and Vocabulary. The Indian class rooms are a microcosm of the larger society, so teaching English language in …

Transformation And Renewal, Josephine Stokes Nov 2011

Transformation And Renewal, Josephine Stokes

Theses and Dissertations

Artist Statement My art has a common thread of transformation and renewal. It is often my response to the many different changing cycles in life, whether seasonal, emotional, or the process of aging. In addition, the spiritual connections to my faith and family are embedded into many of the works which tell a story of my life and my ever searching soul. Revelations of myself over time and the transformation of thoughts are visually exposed. However, they are revealed with a keen eye and hand which are meant to reach out to the viewer, so they may be transformed and …

Matanuska-Susitna Borough Community Survey

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Community Survey (Mat-Su Survey), conducted annually since 2006, is a cooperative research effort between the Justice Center at University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. The survey asks Mat-Su Borough residents to evaluate the quality of Borough services, provide opinions about Borough decision-making, and sum up their perceptions about a range of issues relevant to the present and future of the Mat-Su community. The 2011 survey was distributed to 2,577 adult heads-of-household in the Mat-Su Borough in the late summer and fall of 2011; a total of 1,159 surveys were returned, for a response rate …

Good Teaching: Aligning Student And Administrator Perceptions And Expectations, Lazarus Nabaho, Joseph Oonyu, Jessica Norah Aguti

Higher Learning Research Communications

Literature attests to limited systematic inquiry into students’ conceptions of good teaching in higher education. Resultantly, there have been calls for engaging students in construing what makes good university teaching and in developing a richer conception of teaching excellence. This interpretivist study that is based on views of final year university students from six academic disciplines investigated students’ conceptions of good teaching at Makerere University in Uganda. Students conceived good teaching as being student-centred, demonstrating strong subject and pedagogical knowledge, being approachable, being responsive, being organised, and being able to communicate well. Most of the conceptions of good teaching hinge …

A Model Checking Framework For Hierarchical Systems., Truong Khanh Nguyen, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong Nov 2011

A Model Checking Framework For Hierarchical Systems., Truong Khanh Nguyen, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

BDD-based symbolic model checking is capable of verifying systems with a large number of states. In this work, we report an extensible framework to facilitate symbolic encoding and checking of hierarchical systems. Firstly, a novel library of symbolic encoding functions for compositional operators (e.g., parallel composition, sequential composition, choice operator, etc.) are developed so that users can apply symbolic model checking techniques to hierarchical systems with little knowledge of symbolic encoding techniques (like BDD or CUDD). Secondly, as the library is language-independent, we build an extensible framework with various symbolic model checking algorithms so that the library can be easily …

The Undergraduate In The Repository: Connecting The Dots, Stephanie Davis-Kahl

Key to Unlocking Scholarship: Institutional Repositories

The focus of this session will be on how the institutional repository can be used as a foundation for educating undergraduate students about issues surrounding open access, author rights and copyright, and how libraries can embed these concepts in information literacy sessions as well as in outreach efforts throughout the academic year. Several initiatives by IWU to highlight undergraduate work will be discussed.

Pay No Attention To That Repository Behind The Curtain: Focusing On Services, Sarah L. Shreeves

Key to Unlocking Scholarship: Institutional Repositories

Over the last 10 years, digital repositories of all sorts have become a common feature in research libraries and consortia. Such repositories allow libraries to collect, manage, preserve, and provide access to an enormous range of content: institutional research and scholarship, university and library electronic records, digitized and born-digital archival and special collections, and digitized and born-digital books and journals. For the most part, the repository itself—the infrastructure where libraries put this content—has been the focus of attention. More recently, however, the repository itself has begun to shift to the background, to truly serve as infrastructure, while the services that …

A New Look At The Role Of Management History In The Management Curriculum, Jane Whitney Gibson, Regina A. Greenwood, Edward Francis Murphy, David Andrew Lamond Nov 2011

A New Look At The Role Of Management History In The Management Curriculum, Jane Whitney Gibson, Regina A. Greenwood, Edward Francis Murphy, David Andrew Lamond

HCBE Faculty Presentations

We replicate surveys from 1989 and 1997 to examine the role of management history in the management curriculum. Respondents were members of the Management History Division of the Academy of Management. Our findings indicate that management history is not often a part of the curriculum, most management history courses rely on Wren and Bedeian’s Evolution of Management History (2009), and most respondents believe that more management history should be in the curriculum, as a separate course and within courses. We also discuss the value of management history and present suggestions for making that value more apparent.

Determining The Feasibility Of Implementing A Beekeeping Cooperative In The Bloomington-Normal, Illinois Area, Courtney Luensman '12 Nov 2011

Determining The Feasibility Of Implementing A Beekeeping Cooperative In The Bloomington-Normal, Illinois Area, Courtney Luensman '12

Outstanding Senior Seminar Papers

The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of implementing a beekeeping cooperative in the Bloomington-Normal, Illinois area. Through the literature review, it is exhibited that honeybees play a very important role in the pollination of certain crops, but there has been a decline in honeybee population, which could result in possible crop reduction. My research was determining benefits and feasibility in the formation of a beekeeping cooperative. Through conducting interviews with beekeepers, farmers, cooperatives, and agricultural organizations, I have determined that there are significant benefits to be gained from the presence of a cooperative, although there are …

War Letters: A Thematic Approach And Comparison Of Military Letters From World War Ii And The Vietnam War, Jeanne Yamonaco

Theses

Letters, a form of mediated interpersonal communication, provide readers and writers the opportunity to transcend space and time. Letters can also serve as a permanent record of communicated information. The present study compares themes of selected letters written by soldiers from two wars: World War II and Vietnam. Two research questions are posed: What are the themes expressed in soldiers` letters? Is there a difference in themes that relate to the particular war fought? This study analyzed 202 letters written by military personnel from both World War II and the Vietnam War. After content analysis of the 10 most prevalent …
