From Vision To Action: A Collaborative Organizational Informatics Initiative, Anita Mirijamdotter, Mary M. Somerville

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Presentations

Since July 2008, North American workers in a complex public/government organization have collaboratively re-invented their organizational structures and communication systems. The new workplace culture is characterized by shared leadership, appreciative inquiry, informed learning, and action research principles and practices. Illustrative of the potential of collaborative workplace design, a wiki intranet initiative was begun in March 2009, employing Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) tools. This paper will describe and illustrate transferable research tools which convene stakeholders and beneficiaries to co-create transformative ICT systems.

How To Navigate Public Accounting Recruitment, Jill Heather Aoki Nov 2011

How To Navigate Public Accounting Recruitment, Jill Heather Aoki

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

For many accounting graduates, public accounting is an excellent place to start a career. However, recruitment at accounting firms is highly competitive. The majority of personnel are hired through internships, and competition for these positions is fierce. The process usually spans over multiple years and involves participating in leadership seminars, attending social events, and much more in addition to interviewing. Successful placement requires not only exceptional academic achievements but also strong relationships with personnel at the firm. One primary differentiator among the numerous public accounting firms is their people and culture. Other factors include local clients and specializations. Thus, candidates …

Section of Neurosurgery

Background:The aims of this study were to evaluate the awareness of and attitudes towards the 2005 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines for Heart Failure (HF) of the cardiologists in Pakistan and assess barriers to adherence to guidelines.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in person from March to July 2009 to all cardiologists practicing in 4 major cities in Pakistan (Karachi, Lahore, Quetta and Peshawar). A validated, semi-structured questionnaire assessing ESC 2005 Guidelines for HF was used to obtain information from cardiologists. It included questions about awareness and relevance of HF guidelines (See Additional File 1). Respondents' management …

Feminist Advocacy In Community Based Responses To Domestic Violence: Gendered Identity, Ideology And Practices, Andrea J. Nichols Nov 2011

Feminist Advocacy In Community Based Responses To Domestic Violence: Gendered Identity, Ideology And Practices, Andrea J. Nichols

Dissertations

The anti-domestic violence movement began as a feminist grassroots effort. Early feminist advocates relied on survivor-defined and social change practices rooted in feminist identity and ideology. Advocacy has evolved over time, moving from grassroots efforts into professionalized organizations, and now includes collaboration with the justice system in community based responses to domestic violence (CBR). Through inductive analysis of interviews with 26 domestic violence victim advocates and drawing from a gendered organizations framework, I examine how advocates’ feminist identity and ideology shape their practices in CBR. Findings indicate that advocates both resist and reproduce various gendered practices within traditionally feminist anti-domestic …

Simultaneous measurement of the proton-transfer 18F(d,n) 19Ne and neutron-transfer 18F(d,p)19F reactions were performed with a 18F radioactive beam at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The experiments clarify the nuclear structure of 19Ne near the proton threshold, which is relevant for understanding the rates of proton-induced reactions on 18F in novae. Analogs for several states in the mirror nucleus 19F have not yet been identified in 19Ne, indicating that the level structure of 19Ne in this region is incomplete. We observed 15 levels in 19Ne from the 18F(d,n) 19Ne measurement and 18 levels in 19F …

A Comparison Of Bss Algorithms In Harsh Environments, Christopher Osterwise, Steven Grant Nov 2011

A Comparison Of Bss Algorithms In Harsh Environments, Christopher Osterwise, Steven Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper compares the performance of several blind source separation (BSS) algorithms in environments of varying reverberation, noise, microphone spacing, and sparsity. of particular interest are two frequency domain algorithms: one Cascaded ICA with Intervention Alignment (CICAIA), and one algorithm by Pham, Servire, and Boumaraf. the former is found to work exceptionally well in high noise, low microphone spacing environments. the latter proves to work exceptionally well in high SNR and moderate- to widely spaced arrays. in addition, while the literature on BSS algorithms is extensive, their performance under varying noise conditions has not been widely explored. Also, though usually …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

Last week saw Jake and I in St. Paul, Minnesota for the annual National Association for Interpretation workshop, a week long gathering of professional interpreters from around the nation. I'll guarantee that the next couple of weeks will be filled with recaps from both of us on what struck us the most during the conference. Our reactions ranged from "meh..." to "Dude!" [excerpt]

Sex Talk: Factors That Influence Parent-Child Communication About Sex, Tiffany Abrego Nov 2011

Sex Talk: Factors That Influence Parent-Child Communication About Sex, Tiffany Abrego

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Between 50 and 70% of young people are first sexually active between the ages of 15 and 17, and almost 90% by age 18. This early sexual debut puts adolescents at high risk for sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancy if they are uneducated about safe sex. For this reason, it is important to determine the variables that contribute to early sexual debut. One factor that researchers have explored is the communication between parents and their children concerning sex. Researchers have found that the communication about sex is influenced by parents’ own beliefs, experiences, and comfort level discussing sexual topics. …

Grading Practices: Teachers' Considerations Of Academic And Non-Academic Factors, Diana Yesbeck Nov 2011

Grading Practices: Teachers' Considerations Of Academic And Non-Academic Factors, Diana Yesbeck

Theses and Dissertations

In the current era of student accountability, coupled with high-stakes testing, schools have focused on the alignment of standardized curriculums and assessments. However, developing standardized grading practices are still under examination. Grading serves as an important responsibility, yet many teachers still find the process a challenge of determining which academic and non-academic factors correctly represent student achievement. This qualitative study was designed to examine the grading factors teachers consider when determining student final grades. Middle school language arts teachers from one mid-sized suburban school district in Virginia participated in qualitative interviews. The interviews addressed the following topics: (1) the purposes …

Glocalization In Macedonia: English In Outdoor Advertising Messages, Pamela Morris Nov 2011

Glocalization In Macedonia: English In Outdoor Advertising Messages, Pamela Morris

School of Communication: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Outdoor advertising visuals from Skopje, Macedonia are analyzed in a content analysis. Images were photographed in the most heavily traveled areas of the city to secure a snapshot of culture and to analyze western influence. Media and linguistic imperialism, globalization and glocalization, along with advertising and communication strategies, are used to frame the investigation. Findings show that media companies are the leading advertisers, along with banks and entertainment. The majority of ads employed some form of English, although Macedonian and Cyrillic writing were also used. The images revealed strategic use of language and symbols, depending on the product category, business …
