Bori Practice Among Enslaved West Africans Of Ottoman Tunis: Unbelief (Kufr) Or Another Dimension Of The African Diaspora?, Ismael M. Montana

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Building on Ahmad ibn Yusuf b. al-Qadi al-Timbuktawi's treatise entitled Hatk al-Sitr Amma Alayhi Sudani Tunis min al-Kufr (Piercing the Veil: Being an Account of the Infidel Religions of the Blacks of Tunis) this paper examines the implications of the Hausa non-Muslim Bori cult practice in Ottoman Tunis on enslaved West Africans' retentions of religious and family values from their original homelands. Specifically, the paper traces and analyses the evolution of Bori cult practice in the Tunisian milieu and places it in its proper historical and diasporic contexts. To this end, the paper goes beyond questions that are not central …

Abrupt Holocene Climate Change As An Important Factor For Human Migration In West Greenland, William J. D'Andrea, Yongsong Huang, Sherilyn C. Fritz, N. John Anderson Jun 2011

Abrupt Holocene Climate Change As An Important Factor For Human Migration In West Greenland, William J. D'Andrea, Yongsong Huang, Sherilyn C. Fritz, N. John Anderson

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

West Greenland has had multiple episodes of human colonization and cultural transitions over the past 4,500 y. However, the explanations for these large-scale human migrations are varied, including climatic factors, resistance to adaptation, economic marginalization, mercantile exploration, and hostile neighborhood interactions. Evaluating the potential role of climate change is complicated by the lack of quantitative paleoclimate reconstructions near settlement areas and by the relative stability of Holocene temperature derived from ice cores atop the Greenland ice sheet. Here we present high-resolution records of temperature over the past 5,600 y based on alkenone unsaturation in sediments of two lakes in West …

Baghdad Science Journal

The aim of the present work, was measuring of uranium concentrations in 25 soil samples from five locations of Al-Kut city. The samples taken from different depths ranged from soil surface to 60cm step 15 cm, for this measurement of uranium concentrations .The most widely used technique SSNTDs was chosen to be the measurement technique. Results showed that the higher concentrations were in Hai Al- Kafaat which recorded 1.49 ± 0.054 ppm . The uranium content in soil samples were less than permissible limit of UNSCEAR(11.7ppm).

Pibloktoq - A Study Of A Culture-Bound Syndrome In The Circumpolar Region, Rachel D. Higgs

The Macalester Review

In this paper, I examine a Culture Bound Syndrome called pibloktoq that occurs in the circumpolar region. I discuss the history, symptoms, and native and non-native explanations for the disease. Using this information I propose reasons for the continued lack of knowlegde on pibloktoq and future research that may increase our body of knowledge.

From Construction To Conceptualization: Catastrophe Across Three Occasions, John Barnshaw, Lynn Letukas Jun 2011

From Construction To Conceptualization: Catastrophe Across Three Occasions, John Barnshaw, Lynn Letukas

ACURIL 2011: The Role of Libraries and Archives in Disaster Preparedness, Response and Research

This paper explores the process of developing and refining the conceptualization of catastrophe utilizing the extant literature collected following the Chernobyl nuclear reactor leak, the Indian Ocean tsunami, and the BP oil spill. A catastrophe is different from a disaster in that most or all of a community or area is impacted, many local individuals are unable to undertake their usual roles, the community undergoes a period of prolonged inoperability, media plays an increasing role in the construction of the public perception of the occasion, and the political arena shifts from a local or regional issue to a national or …

Issues And Techniques In Translating Scientific Terms From English To Khmer For A University-Level Text In Cambodia, Cassie F. Quigley, Alandeom W. Oliviera, Alistair Curry, Gayle Buck

Publications

Teachers and students spend much time interacting with written resources such as textbooks, tests, or worksheets during classroom instruction. What if no text is available, however, in the language of the learners? This case study describes the processes and techniques adopted by two university lecturers in Cambodia, as they translated an L1 (first language) science text into Khmer in a manner that tried to take full account of the cultural, linguistic, and social dimensions of language. Using a variety of translation techniques, they aimed to produce a Khmer text which would be most effective in promoting the learning of the …

Using System Dynamics Modelling Approach To Develop Management Tools For Animal Production With Emphasis On Small Ruminants, L. O. Tedeschi, C. F. Nicholson, E. Rich Jun 2011

Using System Dynamics Modelling Approach To Develop Management Tools For Animal Production With Emphasis On Small Ruminants, L. O. Tedeschi, C. F. Nicholson, E. Rich

Agribusiness

Small ruminants are important assets in several regions of the world. They account for more than half of the domesticated ruminants. Despite the growth in goat production in the world (more than 2% per year), research related to goat production is less than desired. One underused but potentially valuable approach for research on small ruminants is simulation modelling. Models of the components of small ruminant systems can enhance the financial returns and reduce negative environmental impacts. These models can be used to assess many dimensions of small ruminant production, from rumen dynamics to economic policies designed to support small ruminant …
