Association Between Disruption Of Fibrin Sheaths Using Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty Balloons And Late Onset Of Central Venous Stenosis, Nina Ni
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
This study compares the rates of central venous stenosis in patients undergoing hemodialysis who underwent disruption of fibrin sheath with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) balloons and those who underwent over the wire catheter exchange.
This study is a retrospective review of 209 PTA balloon disruption and 1,304 over the wire catheter exchange procedures. Approval from the Human Investigations Committee was obtained for this study. Up to ten year follow up was performed. A χ2 test was used to compare the rates of central venous stenosis after balloon disruption versus catheter exchange. A T-test was used to compare time to central …

Organizations And The Evolution Of Cooperation, Danielle F. Jung, David A. Lake
Organizations And The Evolution Of Cooperation, Danielle F. Jung, David A. Lake
2011
The Repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma (RPD) is a metaphor for the difficulties of achieving cooperation in social life. We present results from an agent-based model (ABM) of the RPD in which agents interact in a “market,” equivalent to the non-organizational interactions within the standard RPD, or have the option of interacting within networks, which allow agents to acquire information from other agents with whom they have been paired or to select agents with whom to interact, or hierarchies, in which cooperation is enforced by the threat of third party punishment. The ABM sheds new light on when and how organizations affect …
Feasibility Of Public-Private Partnerships For Swamp Rabbit Conservation., Lyann Rubert, Eric M. Schauber, Clayton K. Nielsen, Paul D. Scharine
Feasibility Of Public-Private Partnerships For Swamp Rabbit Conservation., Lyann Rubert, Eric M. Schauber, Clayton K. Nielsen, Paul D. Scharine
Publications
The distribution and abundance of swamp rabbits in southern Illinois have decreased due to loss and fragmentation of bottomland hardwood forests. Remaining populations are likely isolated because of limited dispersal across open areas. Private citizens own 69% of highly suitable swamp rabbit habitat in southern Illinois, so public-private partnership is key to any conservation efforts. Owners of highly suitable habitat were sent mail surveys to determine current and acceptable forms of land management, participation in government incentive programs, and interest in swamp rabbit conservation. The response rate was 41%, and 69% of surveyed landowners indicated interest in learning about or …
Will Overfishing And Proposed Mississippi River Diversions Imperil Louisiana Oyster Fisheries? Commentary And Review, Lynn B. Loftin, H. Dickson Hoese, Mark A. Konikoff
Will Overfishing And Proposed Mississippi River Diversions Imperil Louisiana Oyster Fisheries? Commentary And Review, Lynn B. Loftin, H. Dickson Hoese, Mark A. Konikoff
Gulf of Mexico Science
Two recent articles based on oyster landings have challenged the prevailing wisdom about the most important factors controlling Louisiana oyster production. One article concludes that the northern Gulf industry (principally Louisiana) will collapse based on overfishing; the second concludes that the addition of freshwater through diversions could be harmful to production. These findings are not supported by the literature or our statistical analysis of the landings data. In an effort to put into perspective the complexity of the factors affecting oyster production in the northern Gulf of Mexico, several areas of the oyster literature are reviewed, including (1) hysteresis, (2) …

Insights From Whaling Logbooks On Whales, Dolphins, And Whaling In The Gulf Of Mexico, Randall R. Reeves, Judith N. Lund, Tim D. Smith, Elizabeth A. Josephson
Gulf of Mexico Science
Whaling voyage logbooks provide a unique window into historical marine animal distribution and relative numbers. The Gulf of Mexico was among the regions visited by American commercial whalers beginning in the late 1700s, and possibly as early as the 1760s. For more than a century, they hunted sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and blackfish (usually probably short-finned pilot whales; Globicephala macrorhynchus) in the Gulf. An ongoing study of global whaling history has allowed us to offer some insights on characteristics and trends of the Gulf fishery and on cetacean populations in the Gulf. We examined 53 voyage logbooks …

Study Of Water Use And Supply In The District Of Independencia, Peru, Fletcher A. Mckenzie
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Peru is a developing country with abundant fresh water resources, yet the lack of infrastructure leaves much of the population without access to safe water for domestic uses. The author of this report was a Peace Corps Volunteer in the sector of water & sanitation in the district of Independencia, Ica, Peru. Independencia is located in the arid coastal region of the country, receiving on average 15 mm of rain annually. The water source for this district comes from the Pisco River, originating in the Andean highlands and outflowing into the Pacific Ocean near the town of Pisco, Peru.

Radar Characteristics Of Continental, Coastal, Andmaritime Convection Observed During Amma/Namma, Nick Guy, Steven A. Rutledge, Robert Cifelli
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Ground-based radar observations at three distinct geographical locations in West Africa along a common latitudinal band (Niamey, Niger (continental), Kawsara, Senegal (coastal), and Praia, Republic of Cape Verde (maritime)) are analyzed to determine convective system characteristics in each domain during a 29-day period in 2006. Ancillary datasets provided by the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyses (AMMA) and NASA-AMMA (NAMMA) field campaigns are also used to place the radar observations in context. Results show that the total precipitation is dominated by propagating mesoscale convective systems. Convective characteristics vary according to environmental properties, such as vertical shear, CAPE, and the degree of synoptic …

No. 08: Climate Change And Food Security In Southern African Cities, Gina Ziervogel, Bruce Frayne
No. 08: Climate Change And Food Security In Southern African Cities, Gina Ziervogel, Bruce Frayne
African Food Security Urban Network
The current urban transition in the Global South is at the heart of discussions about the relationship between climate change and food security. This paper explores the links between climate change and food security within the context of the urban transition taking place in Southern Africa. Climate change is expected to negatively accentuate existing levels of urban food insecurity and these adverse impacts are likely to fall disproportionately on the poor. Researchers, planners and policymakers in Southern African cities are starting to explore how changes in weather associated with climate change are likely to affect urban lifestyles and systems. In …

No. 11: The State Of Food Insecurity In Cape Town, Jane Battersby
African Food Security Urban Network
Cape Town is one of the wealthiest cities in the Southern African region. Yet, the vast majority of households in poor areas of the city experience food insecurity. This paper uses AFSUN data to examine the characteristics and drivers of food insecurity in Cape Town. While food insecurity correlates closely with income poverty and household structure, broader factors also impact upon urban food security, most notably urban design and market structure. Efforts to address urban food insecurity should therefore not simply target the household. Instead, a food systems approach is necessary, which considers supply chains, procurement, nutrition support programmes, public …
Soviet Pins: Souvenirs As Spoils In The Triumphal Procession, Alex Levant
Soviet Pins: Souvenirs As Spoils In The Triumphal Procession, Alex Levant
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
In Moscow today, old Soviet pins, which had once been awarded to school kids as a rite of passage, are sold as souvenirs to tourists. These pins are an example of the many ruins of the Soviet Union that have experienced a metamorphosis: they connote an entirely new set of meanings that have supplanted their previous significance without any change in their material form. This article explores the transformation of these “cultural treasures” through the creative output of another Soviet “ruin”: the post-Stalinist philosopher, Evald Ilyenkov, whose work challenged the hegemony of Soviet Diamat, but has not been adequately …

An adult yellow-throated warbler (Dendroica dominica) was observed feeding a fledged brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater) on July 1, 2010 at the Beehive Overlook at Starved Rock State Park (LaSalle County, Illinois, USA). Food in the form of captured insects was brought to the young cowbird five times during a period of approximately 15 minutes.
Resolving The Qualified Immunity Dilemma: Constitutional Tort Claims For Nominal Damages, James E. Pfander
Resolving The Qualified Immunity Dilemma: Constitutional Tort Claims For Nominal Damages, James E. Pfander
Faculty Working Papers
Scholars have criticized the Court's qualified immunity decision in Pearson v. Callahan on the ground that it may lead to stagnation in the judicial elaboration of constitutional norms. Under current law, officers sued in their personal capacity for constitutional torts enjoy qualified immunity from liability unless the plaintiff can persuade the court that the conduct in question violated clearly established law. Pearson permits the lower courts to dismiss on the basis of legal uncertainty; it no longer requires the courts to address the merits of the constitutional question. This essay suggests that constitutional tort claimants should be permitted to avoid …

What Is The Caregivers' (Certified Nursing Assistant) Perception Of Their Role While Caring For A Patient In The Household Model?, Daniyele Feaster
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
This was a mixed design study that assessed the caregivers' perception of their role while caring for patients in the household model. A sample of 12 caregivers currently employed in a long-term care facility operating in the household model was asked to complete a survey and answer 11 questions during a one on one interview. This interview tool allowed the caregivers the opportunity to rate their personal experiences, environment and express their feelings associated with their role as a certified nursing assistant working in a household model. The results indicated that the caregivers enjoyed working in the household environment and …
