Pace Environmental Law Review

This comment analyzes and discusses aspects of the ongoing KBR Burn Pit Litigation, an emerging toxic tort in the United States. The litigation is in response to alleged toxic smoke exposures from burn pits operated by government contactors at military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan. The comment first discusses the alleged exposures and health concerns related to the inhalation of burn pit smoke. Next, the comment explains the regulatory framework surrounding the use of burn pits abroad and the incorporation of this framework into military logistics contracts. The comment next discusses the various legal challenges and obstacles Plaintiffs face in …

Anti-Neuroblastoma Activity Of Gold Nanorods Bound With Gd2 Monoclonal Antibody Under Near-Infrared Laser Irradiation, Ching-An Peng, Chung-Hao Wang Jan 2011

Anti-Neuroblastoma Activity Of Gold Nanorods Bound With Gd2 Monoclonal Antibody Under Near-Infrared Laser Irradiation, Ching-An Peng, Chung-Hao Wang

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

High-risk neuroblastoma is one of the most common deaths in pediatric oncology. Current treatment of this disease involves a coordinated sequence of chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. Further advances in therapy will require the targeting of tumor cells in a more selective and efficient way so that survival can be improved without substantially increasing toxicity. To achieve tumor-selective delivery, disialoganglioside (GD2) expressed by almost all neuroblastoma tumors represents a potential molecular target that can be exploited for tumor-selective delivery. In this study, GD2 monoclonal antibody (anti-GD2) was conjugated to gold nanorods (GNRs) which are one of anisotropic nanomaterials that can absorb …

Trends And Variability In Localized Precipitation Around Kibale National Park, Uganda, Africa, Mary D. Stampone, Joel N. Hartter, Colin A. Chapman, Sadie J. Ryan Jan 2011

Trends And Variability In Localized Precipitation Around Kibale National Park, Uganda, Africa, Mary D. Stampone, Joel N. Hartter, Colin A. Chapman, Sadie J. Ryan

Geography

Our objective was to understand and describe local spatial and temporal variability in precipitation around Kibale National Park, a tropical forest area of high conservation value. Continental or regional-scale trends are often relied upon to make policy and management decisions, but these analyses are often at too coarse a resolution to capture important variability at a finer scale where management actions operate. Monthly rainfall data derived from ten long-term station records (1941-1975) were used to evaluate local spatiotemporal variability in seasonal and annual rainfall for the area surrounding Kibale National Park. The magnitude, direction and significance of trends in seasonal …

Making Wto Remedies Work For Developing Nations: The Need For Class Actions, Phoenix X.F. Cai Jan 2011

Making Wto Remedies Work For Developing Nations: The Need For Class Actions, Phoenix X.F. Cai

Emory International Law Review

This Article eschews legislative solutions that require lengthy negotiations and ratification of amendments in favor of a creative legal strategy solution that can be readily implemented unilaterally by developing nations. This Article proposes the use of 'class actions' by developing nations as a litigation strategy. The term class action is used as a metaphor. It is not meant as an explicit reference of Rule 23 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Indeed, any such explicit reference or incorporation of Rule 23 would vitiate one of the primary benefits of this proposal'the ease of implementation without formal amendments to WTO …

Bats Of Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado: Composition, Reproduction, And Roosting Habits, Thomas J. O'Shea, Paul M. Cryan, E. Apple Snider, Ernest W. Valdez, Laura E. Ellison, Daniel J. Neubaum

Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist

We determined the bat fauna at Mesa Verde National Park (Mesa Verde) in 2006 and 2007, characterized bat elevational distribution and reproduction, and investigated roosting habits of selected species. We captured 1996 bats of 15 species in mist nets set over water during 120 nights of sampling and recorded echolocation calls of an additional species. The bat fauna at Mesa Verde included every species of bat known west of the Great Plains in Colorado, except the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus). Some species showed skewed sex ratios, primarily due to a preponderance of males. Thirteen species of bats …

Gene Expression In Cardiac Tissues From Infants With Idiopathic Conotruncal Defects., Douglas C. Bittel, Merlin G. Butler, Nataliya Kibiryeva, Jennifer A. Marshall, Jie Chen, Gary K. Lofland, James E. O'Brien

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is the most commonly observed conotruncal congenital heart defect. Treatment of these patients has evolved dramatically in the last few decades, yet a genetic explanation is lacking for the failure of cardiac development for the majority of children with TOF. Our goal was to perform genome wide analyses and characterize expression patterns in cardiovascular tissue (right ventricle, pulmonary valve and pulmonary artery) obtained at the time of reconstructive surgery from 19 children with tetralogy of Fallot.

METHODS: We employed genome wide gene expression microarrays to characterize cardiovascular tissue (right ventricle, pulmonary valve and pulmonary artery) …

Antibodies Elicited In Response To Ebna-1 May Cross- React With Dsdna, Pragya Yadav, Hoa Tran, Roland Ebegbe, Paul Gottlieb, Hui Wei, Rita H. Lewis, Alice Mumbey-Wafula, Atira Kaplan, Elina Kholdarova, Linda Spatz

Publications and Research

Background:Several genetic and environmental factors have been linked to Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). One environmental trigger that has a strong association with SLE is the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV). Our laboratory previously demonstrated that BALB/c mice expressing the complete EBNA-1 protein can develop antibodies to double stranded DNA (dsDNA). The present study was undertaken to understand why anti-dsDNA antibodies arise during the immune response to EBNA-1.

Methodology/Principal Findings: In this study, we demonstrated that mouse antibodies elicited in response to EBNA-1 cross-react with dsDNA. First, we showed that adsorption of sera reactive with EBNA-1 and dsDNA, on dsDNA cellulose …

Apoptosis In Displaced Temporomandibular Joint Disc With And Without Reduction: An Immunohistochemical Study, Carla Loreto, Luis Eduardo Almeida, Paula C. Trevilatto, Rosalia Leonardi Jan 2011

Apoptosis In Displaced Temporomandibular Joint Disc With And Without Reduction: An Immunohistochemical Study, Carla Loreto, Luis Eduardo Almeida, Paula C. Trevilatto, Rosalia Leonardi

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Internal derangement (ID) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is due to an abnormal relationship of the articular disc to the mandibular condyle, glenoid fossa and articular eminence. The two most common types of internal derangement are anterior disc displacement with (ADDwR) and without reduction (ADDwoR). Disc displacement is associated with degenerative tissue changes. The histological features of discs from patients with TMJ ID reflect a general remodelling caused by abnormal loading. A correlation has been demonstrated between TMJ ID and apoptosis. Few investigations have addressed the role of apoptosis or caspase activity in TMJ ID. The apoptosis activation process was …

Robust Region Tracking In Multi-Agent Systems Utilizing Sliding Mode Control: Theory And Applications, Mark Bacon Jan 2011

Robust Region Tracking In Multi-Agent Systems Utilizing Sliding Mode Control: Theory And Applications, Mark Bacon

Master's Theses

This thesis presents a methodology to bring controlled agents within a moving region despite agent interaction dynamics, uncertain forces and parameter variation. The logic is derived from traditional Sliding Mode Control theory with an expanded boundary layer which allows position deviation from the region center to specified bounds. As an example of the utility of this control, multiple methods of herding (controlling passive agents by appropriate positioning of controlled agents) are presented.

Managing Complexity In Modern Farming, Ross Kingwell Jan 2011

Managing Complexity In Modern Farming, Ross Kingwell

Natural Resources Research Articles

Modern farming in Australia is no longer simple. Farms are large, multi-enterprise businesses underpinned by expensive capital investments, changing production technologies, volatile markets and social challenges. The complexity of modern broadacre farming leads to the question: what is the nature of the relationship between farm business complexity and farm profitability? This study uses bioeconomic farm modelling and employs eight measures of complexity to examine the profitability and complexity of a wide range of broadacre farming systems in Australia. Rank order correlations between farm profitability and each measure of complexity show inconsistent relationships, although the most profitable farming systems are found …
