Mechanisms Of Erythropoietin-Induced Neuroprotection In: In-Vivo And In-Vitro Models Of Hypoxia Ischema, Rhonda Andrea Souvenir
Mechanisms Of Erythropoietin-Induced Neuroprotection In: In-Vivo And In-Vitro Models Of Hypoxia Ischema, Rhonda Andrea Souvenir
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Hypoxic ischemic brain injury (HIBI) is a common cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity. Approximately 60 % of preterm babies and 2% of full term infants suffer from asphyxia. Asphyxia related death accounts for approximately 23% of neonatal mortality annually. Many therapeutic interventions show promise in the laboratory but fail in clinics. A thorough understanding of mechanisms by which promising therapeutic intervention confers its neuroprotection is necessary to promote smoother transitions from bench to the bedside. Erythropoietin (EPO), a hematopoietic growth factor that increases oxygen availability during hypoxia/ischemia is associated with cell survival and neuroprotection in: in vivo and in …
Allosteric Modulation Of Vla-4 With The Atypical Antipsychotic Thioridazine, Bart Williams
Allosteric Modulation Of Vla-4 With The Atypical Antipsychotic Thioridazine, Bart Williams
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
A recent primary drug screen by the University of New Mexico Center for Molecular Discovery uncovered a novel group of allosteric-modulators of VLA-4 integrins known as phenothiazines. Phenothiazine family compounds were initially discovered as organic dyes in the 1800's, the most well-known of which is methylene blue. Relatively soon thereafter phenothiazines were found to be useful clinically, a trend that has continued in the century since peaking as antipsychotics in the 1950's. Today, phenothiazines are still being pursued clinically as seen in a number of recent patents for phenothiazine use in autoimmune disorders. This study sought to further characterize the …
Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Transport In The Squid Giant Axon: Competition Between Cargo Motor Receptors, Jip-1, App-C, And Negative Charge, Pamela E. Seamster
Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Transport In The Squid Giant Axon: Competition Between Cargo Motor Receptors, Jip-1, App-C, And Negative Charge, Pamela E. Seamster
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Transport of membrane-bound organelles is critical to neuronal cell function yet mechanisms hitching vesicles to transport machinery remain elusive. Here we test whether jun-kinase interacting protein (JIP-1), a peripheral membrane scaffolding protein that binds kinesin light chain, is sufficient to mediate cargo transport in axons and study its competition with amyloid precursor protein cytoplasmic domain (APP-) and negative charge, also known motor receptors. Fluorescent beads (100 nm diameter) exhibit sequence-specific fast anterograde transport (0.46μm/s instantaneous velocity) in the squid giant axon when conjugated to a 14- amino acid synthetic peptide derived from the carboxyl terminus of JIP-1. JIP-1- beads have …
Regulation Of Hgf Expression By Δegfr-Mediated C-Met Activation In Glioblastoma Cells, Jeannine Garnett
Regulation Of Hgf Expression By Δegfr-Mediated C-Met Activation In Glioblastoma Cells, Jeannine Garnett
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Overexpression of the hepatocyte growth factor receptor (c-Met) and its ligand, the hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), and a constitutively active mutant of the epidermal growth factor receptor (∆EGFR/EGFRvIII), occur frequently in glioblastoma. c-Met is activated in a ligand-dependent manner by HGF or in a ligand-independent manner by ∆EGFR. Dysregulated c-Met signaling contributes to the aggressive phenotype of glioblastoma, yet the mechanisms underlying the production of HGF in glioblastoma are poorly understood. We found a positive correlation between HGF and c-Met expression in glioblastoma, suggesting that they are coregulated. This is supported by the finding that in a c-Met/HGF axis-dependent glioblastoma …

Prognostic Significance Of Xct Polymorphisms And Expression In Patients With Advanced Pancreatic Cancer Treated With Chemotherapy, Tzu-Chuan Jane Huang Md
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The plasma membrane xc- cystine/glutamate transporter mediates cellular uptake of cystine in exchange for intracellular glutamate and is highly expressed by pancreatic cancer cells. The xCT gene, encoding the cystine-specific xCT protein subunit of xc-, is important in regulating intracellular glutathione (GSH) levels, critical for cancer cell protection against oxidative stress, tumor growth and resistance to chemotherapeutic agents including platinum. We examined 4 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the xCT gene in 269 advanced pancreatic cancer patients who received first line gemcitabine with or without cisplatin or oxaliplatin. Genotyping was performed using Taqman real-time PCR …

On June 16, 2001, the national press first reported the death of Ellen Roche, a healthy 24-year-old who volunteered for an asthma study at Johns Hopkins University. The story revealed that a few days into the trial she felt very sick, was discharged, and sent home. Within some hours she checked into the emergency room at a local hospital and fell into a coma. Ellen remained in this state until her death a month later. She had received $375 for participating in seven to nine sessions as an outpatient in the clinical drug study that resulted in her death.

Sign Language Word List Comparisons: Toward A Replicable Coding And Scoring Methodology, Jason Parks
Sign Language Word List Comparisons: Toward A Replicable Coding And Scoring Methodology, Jason Parks
Theses and Dissertations
This study describes and evaluates a methodology for sign language word list comparisons. The purpose of this sociolinguistic research tool is to identify similarity relationships among sign language varieties by assessing similarities of lexical items. Similarities are calculated using the Levenshtein distance metric which measures the number of differences between signs.
In this study, the methodology was refined for optimal efficiency through an analysis of: which parameters of a sign should be compared, which values should be included in each parameter value inventory, and which items should be used in the word list. As a result of the study, I …
Characterization Of The Pharmacological Effects Of Digitoxin On Lung Epithelial Cells, Hosam Abdelmonaim Elbaz
Characterization Of The Pharmacological Effects Of Digitoxin On Lung Epithelial Cells, Hosam Abdelmonaim Elbaz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lung diseases (excluding cancer) account for 9% of all disease related mortalities while lung cancer accounts for 30% of cancer related mortalities. Therapeutic maneuvers, as surgery are usually unfeasible given the extreme vitality of the lung. Developing novel therapeutic alternatives for lung cancer requires a thorough understanding on the lung epithelial cell behavior following exposure to drugs. The goal of this dissertation was to examine how molecular and cellular characteristics, such as morphology and cell viability, of lung cancer cells will be altered upon exposure to digitoxin, a cardiac glycosides (CGs) and a digitoxin synthetic analog. CGs are a large …
Gis Assisted Problem Analysis Of Trail Erosion In Monongahela National Forest, Steven J. Storck
Gis Assisted Problem Analysis Of Trail Erosion In Monongahela National Forest, Steven J. Storck
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research investigates the frequency and patterns of trail erosion on purposefully selected natural surface trails in Monongahela National Forest. Trail erosion is considered a non-self-limiting process which degrades trail beds making them unattractive, difficult to travel on, and has the potential to impact local streams with the introduction of silt. Recreation ecology research delineates factors which influence the rate of erosion on a trail into three broad categories: recreational use, environmental conditions, and managerial actions. This study tests the relationship of variables from each of these categories to the local patterns of erosion. Three sampling strategies are used to …

Patternicity And Persuasion: Evolutionary Biology As A Bridge Between Economic And Narrative Analysis In The Law, James D. Ridgway
Patternicity And Persuasion: Evolutionary Biology As A Bridge Between Economic And Narrative Analysis In The Law, James D. Ridgway
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Although economic and narrative analyses are clearly useful in exploring legal issues, their foundations and persuasive power have not been thoroughly investigated. Evolutionary biology can now explain how human beings instinctively approach legal problems, and what features from economic and narrative analysis are rooted in the information processing functions of the brain. As a result, the most effective aspects of each can be synthesized into a new tool, the archetypal narratives of human interaction. This article proposes that evolutionary biology indicates that human beings process legal arguments using three archetypal narratives: (1) the story of cooperation, which describes maximizing the …

Lipid Emulsion Therapy As Treatment For Local Anesthetic Systemic Toxicity, Nina R. Wentz
Lipid Emulsion Therapy As Treatment For Local Anesthetic Systemic Toxicity, Nina R. Wentz
Theses and Dissertations
Local anesthetic systemic toxicity, due to misapplication of local anesthetic in an otherwise routine procedure, can result in deleterious effects. Although improved regional anesthesia techniques, effective test-dosing, and availability of less toxic local anesthetics have resulted in a decline in local anesthetic toxicity rates, adverse events do occur. A comprehensive review of literature was conducted and current research findings and documented case studies were systematically reviewed. The "lipid sink" phenomenon is the most widely accepted theoretical framework surrounding intravenous lipid emulsion treatment for local anesthetic induced cardiovascular collapse (Rothschild, Bern, Oswald, & Weinberg, 2010). Current evidence suggests that immediate infusion …
Native Artists Helping Our People Endure (Hope): A Social Capital Analysis Of A Grassroots Art Initiative To Address Youth Suicide In An Indigenous Community, Nathania Tsosie
Architecture and Planning ETDs
This study identifies and examines the components of social capital related to a grassroots initiative to address Indigenous youth suicide through art. The Native Artists for HOPE’s Thoreau Youth Art Project was organized by a small group of professional Native American artists in response to a sudden increase of youth suicide in a community on the Navajo Nation. Built on cultural core values identified by the artists themselves, the day long workshop encourages self-expression and creativity as an alternative to risky behaviors believed by community members to be related to suicide. A brief literature review of social capital including its …
Let The Beauty We Love Be What We Do: A Case Study In Communication-Centered Leadership, Jo Carter
Let The Beauty We Love Be What We Do: A Case Study In Communication-Centered Leadership, Jo Carter
Communication ETDs
While leadership research is widespread, much of it represents leadership psychology assumptions that leaders are singular individuals, different from the body that they are leading. This dissertation provides a close reading of a different approach to leadership, one arising from the cultural community around the Diana's Grove retreat center. This philosophy holds cultural norms of the Cornerstones of Community (choice, thinking well of the group, thinking well of one's self, stewardship of self, and sacred wound) as overt rules that are the foundation of sustainable community interactions. It discusses how service to the idea of community is the primary motivating …
Agricultural Productivity Growth In Central America And The Caribbean, Ayako Ebata
Agricultural Productivity Growth In Central America And The Caribbean, Ayako Ebata
Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis estimates total factor productivity (TFP) growth in the agricultural sector of fourteen regions in Central America and the Caribbean. First, TFP is measured parametrically and non-parametrically, using the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method and the Maximum Likelihood (ML) method to estimate a translog production function and the Malmquist index approach. Secondly, the thesis incorporates an environmental bad, CO2 emissions from expansion of agricultural land by sacrificing forest area and estimates environmentally adjusted productivity (EAP) growth rates using an output distance function in order to assess how the growth of TFP rates changes when such a bad is …

"Ein Staat Der Jugend": The Politics Of Socialist Patriotism And National Consciousness In Shaping Youth Policy In The German Democratic Republic, 1961–1967, Regina K. Ernest
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In attempts to bridge the increasing gap between youth and socialism in the German Democratic Republic in the 1960s, the Socialist Unity Party (SED) modified its youth policy by encouraging a socialist patriotic consciousness rather than solely emphasizing socialist development. For the duration of its statehood, the SED claimed that socialist patriotism and proletarian internationalism were intrinsically connected. However, in the pursuit of producing a consolidated youth, the SED became divided not only on the direction of youth policy but also on this symbiotic connection. In his liberal reform movement, head of state Walter Ulbricht and his advocates focused predominantly …

A Stochastic Version Of The Em Algorithm To Analyze Multivariate Skew-Normal Data With Missing Responses, M. Khounsiavash, M. Ganjali, T. Baghfalaki
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper an algorithm called SEM, which is a stochastic version of the EM algorithm, is used to analyze multivariate skew-normal data with intermittent missing values. Also, a multivariate selection model framework for modeling of both missing and response mechanisms is formulated. By the SEM algorithm missing values of responses are inputed by the conditional distribution of missing values given observed data and then the log-likelihood of the pseudocomplete data is maximized. The algorithm is iterated until convergence of parameter estimates. Results of an application are also reported where a Bootstrap approach is used to compute the standard error …
Growing The Experience Economy, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel
Growing The Experience Economy, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel
Cornhusker Economics
Some of us, and I confess I am in this group, can remember when our mother would make us a birthday cake. She used basic ingredients or commodities like flour, sugar, eggs and cocoa to create it from scratch. It was always a wonderful creation and quite affordable – probably under 50 cents for the entire cake. Then a few years later it seemed fashionable to use cake mixes and canned frostings. Betty Crocker, Duncan Hines and others figured out that they could take the commodities and package them in such a way as to make a consumer good. …
Latino Identity In Allende's Historical Novels, Olga Ries
Latino Identity In Allende's Historical Novels, Olga Ries
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Latino Identity in Allende's Historical Novels" Olga Ries analyzes the concept of individual and group identity found in five historical novels by Isabel Allende. Ries argues that while Allende's protagonists come from different backgrounds and different epochs, they share a process of psychological transformation and that affects their identity formation. The result is the formation of a transnational "Hispanic" identity, group as well as individual. In Ries's reading of Allende's texts, transnational Hispanic identity is based simultaneously on the Mexican/Hispanic concept of mestizaje and on the US-American concepts of the "melting pot" and the "American Dream."

Mechanics Of Interaction, Ryota Takemura
Mechanics Of Interaction, Ryota Takemura
Theses
My work focuses on the senses that we take for granted when we experience art. We often disregard how our bodies work in relation to living our daily lives. In my piece, the Mechanics of Interaction, I highlight the experience of intertwined senses, in particular sight, touch, and sound. My thesis sculpture, the Mechanics of Interaction, is based on an attempt to avoid a purely visual experience of art. I try to redirect the audience away from the hierarchy of senses where sight is privileged. Many artworks tend to accentuate the combination of vision and thought as an "expression." Sight …
