Coherent Turbulence: Synthesizing Tree Motion In The Wind Using Cfd And Noise, Anthony Frank Selino
Coherent Turbulence: Synthesizing Tree Motion In The Wind Using Cfd And Noise, Anthony Frank Selino
Theses and Dissertations
Animating trees in wind has long been a problem in computer graphics. Progress on this problem is important for both visual effects and biomechanics and may inform future work on two-way coupling between turbulent flows and deformable objects. Synthetic turbulence added to a coarse fluid simulation has been used to produce convincing animations of turbulent flows, but only considers one-way coupling between fluid and solid. We produce accurate animations of tree motion by creating a two-way coupling between synthetic turbulence and semipermeable proxy geometry. The resulting animations exhibit global wind sheltering effects and branch tips have motion paths which match …

Cumulative Risks To Eastern Oysters, Crassostrea Virginica In The James River, Va, Vrushali Lele
Cumulative Risks To Eastern Oysters, Crassostrea Virginica In The James River, Va, Vrushali Lele
Theses and Dissertations
In an effort to apply Cumulative Risk Assessment (CRA) as developed by the U.S. EPA, the present study investigates the cumulative risks to Eastern oysters due to multiple stressors such as salinity, temperature and oxygen and carbon dioxide. I also compared the effectiveness of the Hazard Quotient Method (HQ) in CRA. Ambient conditions in the James River, VA were obtained from the Virginia DEQ database and respiratory responses were estimated using values from the literature. The multiple environmental stresses are evaluated using a probabilistic analysis that combines the environmental conditions. It was concluded that salinity was the most influential stressor …
Turning To The Bottle For Answers: Identifying Racial Differences In Predictors Of Risk Drinking Among College Women, Melody Mickens
Turning To The Bottle For Answers: Identifying Racial Differences In Predictors Of Risk Drinking Among College Women, Melody Mickens
Theses and Dissertations
Epidemiological data suggest that alcohol use and related problems have increased among college women. The current study examined psychosocial predictors of risk drinking in a sample of college women (N=360), whether race moderated this relationship. Potential predictors included: daily smoker; premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptom severity; age at first alcohol use, negative affect, parental history of alcohol problems and minority status. Analyses found that somatic PMS symptom severity score, age of first alcohol use, daily smoking, age of first alcohol use and non-minority status were related. Findings suggest that minority group membership was associated with low risk drinking, while somatic PMS …

Law and Economics as a Rhetorical Perspective in Law
Michael D. Murray
Abstract
This article introduces twenty-first century law and economics as a school of contemporary legal rhetoric to test and improve general legal discourse in areas beyond the economic analysis of law. My article is the first to examine the prescriptive implications of the rhetoric of law and economics for general legal discourse as opposed to examining the benefits and limitations of the economic analysis of law itself. This article advances the conversation in two areas: the study and understanding of the persuasiveness of law and economics and the …

The Role Of Sox9 In Heart Valve Development And Disease, Jacqueline D. Peacock
The Role Of Sox9 In Heart Valve Development And Disease, Jacqueline D. Peacock
Open Access Dissertations
Heart valve structures open and close during the cardiac cycle to provide unidirectional blood flow through the heart, critical for efficient cardiovascular function. Valve dysfunction results in either incomplete opening or incomplete closure of the valve. Both types of valve dysfunction decrease efficiency of blood flow, increasing the load on the myocardium and leading to secondary heart disease such as pathological hypertrophy and heart failure. There are currently no effective treatments to prevent or slow the progression of valve disease, and there are no pharmacological treatments for advanced valve disease. Although most valve disease is associated with aging, increasing evidence …

Context-Dependent Behavior, Reproduction And Brain Structure In Newly-Established Colonies Of The Primitively Eusocial Wasp, Mischocyttarus Mexicanus, Floria Mora Kepfer

Reproductive division of labor is the most distinctive characteristic of the social Hymenoptera; some individuals reproduce and others forego their own reproduction to raise non-descendant offspring. In species where females are reproductively totipotent and lack morphologically distinct castes, there is potential for reproductive conflict because more than one female in a colony may attempt direct reproduction. I focused my dissertation research on a subtropical population of the primitively eusocial paper wasp, Mischocyttarus mexicanus, to investigate the initiation, establishment, and development of the colony before the emergence of adult offspring. Female M. mexicanus exhibit variation in behavior and task performance, and …

Bio-Gasoline From Jatropha Oil: New Applications For The Fcc- Process, Alexander Weinert, Alexander Reichhold, Peter Bielansky, Christoph Schönberger, Bettina Schumi
10th International Conference on Circulating Fluidized Beds and Fluidization Technology - CFB-10
Jatropha curcas L. is a very drought-resistant plant, and jatropha oil can be ex-tracted from its seeds. Whilst not suitable for human consumption, we found that it is a promising feedstock for producing (bio)-gasoline. The oil was cracked in an inter-nally circulating FCC-reactor using a Grace Davison Ultima® catalyst. The total con-version was around 65%, with ca. 40% gasoline and ca. 25% crack gas (exact num-bers varied with reactor temperature). The gasoline has a RON > 95 and oxy-gen < 0.3% m. The crack-gas consisted of ca. 35% propylene, ca. 13% 1-butene and ca. 6% ethylene.

Phylogeography Of The Polychaete Phragmatopoma Californica (Family Sabellarididae) In The Southern California Bight (Scb), Praneeth Kamana
Student Theses and Dissertations
This study measured the genetic differentiation among populations of Phragmatopoma californica and compared this genetic structuring with another polychaete species (Neries grubei) having a different life history. A total of 234 samples from 13 populations of the sabelleriid polychaete Phragmatapoma californica (Fewkes) from six mainland sites along the southern California coast and two Channel Islands were studied by way of inter simple sequence repeats (ISSRs) to determine genetic diversity, divergence and to estimate gene flow among populations. The results were compared to another polycheate species, Neries grubei which has a shorter larval development than P. californica, reducing potential dispersal and …

Three Seventeen: A Novel, Kerri Lynn Bennett
Student Theses and Dissertations
Three Seventeen is a young adult fantasy novel comprised of approximately 90,000 words. The story is presented in a third person limited point of view and relates the experiences of collegiate Logan Michaels' turbulent 21st year of life. It addresses themes such as isolation, finding an identity, learning to trust others, developing a belief system and the possibility of redemption. The novel has a circular construction, ending at the same point in the main character's life at which it began twelve months earlier. During the course of the plot, Logan exhibits signs of growth and development. Though the ending can …
Desorption Of Volatiles From Solid Phase Micro-Extraction Using A Nd:Yag Laser, Bret Allen Yount
Desorption Of Volatiles From Solid Phase Micro-Extraction Using A Nd:Yag Laser, Bret Allen Yount
Student Theses and Dissertations
This work investigates the use of a Q-switched neodymium doped yttrium aluminum garnet type laser (Nd:YAG) to rapidly desorb carbowax/poly-ethylene glycol coated Solid Phase Micro-Extraction (SPME) and introduce volatile samples to a GC-MS. Specifically, effort is made to reduce desorption cycle time from an order of minutes to seconds, enhance SPME lifetime by minimizing degradation of coating material during desorption, and reduce overall desorption energy and size requirements while also minimizing the concern for SPME oxidation in air. Experiments with a 1064 nm laser pulse, utilizing both toluene and DNT as the compound of interest, demonstrate that laser pulses can …

Memory, Identity, And Paternalism: Creating An Appalachian Camelot, Lisa R. Perry
Student Theses and Dissertations
Wheelwright, Kentucky was founded as a coal camp, a community built to serve the needs of the mining industry and intended to last only as long as the coal. Hundreds of communities such as this flourished in the Appalachian Mountains from the late nineteenth through the early twentieth century. In 1930, however, Inland Steel Company purchased the town from Elk Horn Coal Company and began a period of community development that ushered in an era that some today refer to as Camelot, a golden age when all one could want could be found within the confines of a two-mile long …
