Improved Keratinase Production For Feather Degradation By Bacillus Licheniformis Zjuel31410 In Submerged Cultivation, Hui Ni, Qi-He Chen, Feng Chen, Ming-Liang Fu, Ya-Chen Dong, Hui-Nong Cai

Publications

Optimal medium was used to improve the production of keratinase by Bacillus licheniformis ZJUEL31410, which has a promising application in the transformation of feather into soluble protein. The results of single factor design revealed that the concentration of feather at 20 g/l and the initial pH at value 8 was the best for the production of keratinase and the degradation of feather. Ammonia salt and nitrate salt strongly restricted the production of keratinase and the degradation of feather. Result of Box-Behnken design (BBD) experiment which was used to optimize concentrations of glucose, corn steep flour and K2HPO4 …

Cedar Infestation Impacts Avian Communities Along The Niobrara River Valley, Nebraska, January S. Frost, Larkin A. Powell Jul 2011

Cedar Infestation Impacts Avian Communities Along The Niobrara River Valley, Nebraska, January S. Frost, Larkin A. Powell

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Habitat modification has the potential to cause changes in structure and composition of bird communities. Our goal was to determine the response of Songbird community composition to eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) removal in The Nature Conservancy’s Niobrara Valley Preserve, Nebraska. We used point counts to survey birds in the riparian matrix of grassland and forest habitats. More than 60 species were recorded on surveys during 2004–2005. We also use the program PRESENCE to determine the response of five species to various habitat components, including cedar density: House Wren (Troglodytes aedon), Spotted Towhee (Pipilo maculates …

Mechanisms Of Interference In Vibrotactile Working Memory, Tyler D. Bancroft, Philip Servos, William E. Hockley Jul 2011

Mechanisms Of Interference In Vibrotactile Working Memory, Tyler D. Bancroft, Philip Servos, William E. Hockley

Psychology Faculty Publications

In previous studies of interference in vibrotactile working memory, subjects were presented with an interfering distractor stimulus during the delay period between the target and probe stimuli in a delayed match-to-sample task. The accuracy of same/different decisions indicated feature overwriting was the mechanism of interference. However, the distractor was presented late in the delay period, and the distractor may have interfered with the decision-making process, rather than the maintenance of stored information. The present study varies the timing of distractor onset (either early, in the middle, or late in the delay period), and demonstrates both overwriting and non-overwriting forms of …

The Satanic Phenomenon: Medieval Representations Of Satan, Morgan A. Matos Jul 2011

The Satanic Phenomenon: Medieval Representations Of Satan, Morgan A. Matos

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

This project deals with the one and only character of Satan, revealing him through the eyes of the medieval world. The ever-evolving, interconnectedness of culture, religion, and superstition make for a truly unique theatrical experience in the middle ages. With limited understanding and access to scripture, medieval Christians generated a blended belief system, in order to make sense of the metaphysical world, which manifests itself in medieval drama‟s representations of Satan. While the medieval character of Satan upholds many of the Church‟s teachings about his nature and purpose, he takes on a new persona when left to the dramatic interpretation …

Using Creation Science To Demonstrate Evolution 2: Morphological Continuity Within Dinosauria, Philip J. Senter Jul 2011

Using Creation Science To Demonstrate Evolution 2: Morphological Continuity Within Dinosauria, Philip J. Senter

Biological Science Faculty Working Papers

Creationist literature claims that sufficient gaps in morphological continuity exist to classify dinosaurs into several distinct baramins (‘created kinds’). Here, I apply the baraminological method called taxon correlation to test for morphological continuity within and between dinosaurian taxa. The results show enough morphological continuity within Dinosauria to consider most dinosaurs genetically related, even by this creationist standard. A continuous morphological spectrum unites the basal members of Saurischia, Theropoda, Sauropodomorpha, Ornithischia, Thyreophora, arginocephalia, and Ornithopoda with Nodosauridae and Pachycephalosauria and with the basal ornithodirans Silesaurus and Marasuchus. Morphological gaps in the known fossil record separate only seven groups from the rest …

Shedding Light On Shady Grove: Further Reflections On The Erie Doctrine From A Conflicts Perspective, Joseph P. Bauer Jul 2011

Shedding Light On Shady Grove: Further Reflections On The Erie Doctrine From A Conflicts Perspective, Joseph P. Bauer

Notre Dame Law Review

The article discusses the court case Shady Grove Orthopedic Associates, PA. v. Allstate Insurance Co. and analyzes whether it is based on the Erie Doctrine. Erie Doctrine states that if a federal court is hearing a state claim because it has diversity jurisdiction, the common law of the state applies. It also states that the Erie doctrine must be applied to resolve the conflict in the decision of federal court and Supreme Court.

El Militarismo En La Granada De Rodolfo Walsh, Eleonora Bertranou Jul 2011

El Militarismo En La Granada De Rodolfo Walsh, Eleonora Bertranou

Hispanic Studies Faculty Publications

The Role Of Tacr1 Genotypes In Craving, Depression, And Alcohol Dependence., Sara Keelan Blaine Jul 2011

The Role Of Tacr1 Genotypes In Craving, Depression, And Alcohol Dependence., Sara Keelan Blaine

Psychology ETDs

Given that stress and major depression are putative causal factors in alcohol consumption, the exploration of the genes and the associated neurobiological mechanisms that influence the relationship between stress, depression, and alcohol dependence (AD) is a first step toward the development of novel medications for AD. The tachykinin receptor 1 (TACR1) gene is a promising candidate gene, showing an association with stress-related behaviors (Thorsell et al., 2010), major depression (Kramer et al., 2004), and AD treatment outcome (George et al., 2008). The purpose of the current study was to determine if TACR1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are associated with (1) …

Rough Seas For Renewable Energy: Addressing Regulatory Overlap For Hydrokinetic Projects On The Outer Continental Shelf, Amanda Righi Jul 2011

Rough Seas For Renewable Energy: Addressing Regulatory Overlap For Hydrokinetic Projects On The Outer Continental Shelf, Amanda Righi

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

Hydrokinetic energy harnesses the power of the oceans and generates renewable energy with a low carbon footprint. Because wave and tidal energy projects have not yet been initiated for the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) and scientific knowledge of the effects on the ocean environment is uncertain, analysis under the National Environmental Policy Act is particularly important. However, overlapping jurisdiction on the OCS creates an inhospitable regulatory environment for hydrokinetic energy developers and marine ecosystem protection. This comment will analyze these overlapping and duplicative regulations and will make recommendations to streamline the environmental review process. Programmatic environmental impact statements, adaptive management …

A Breath Of Fresh Air: Methods And Obstacles For Achieving Air Pollution Reduction In Washington Factory Farm Communities, Linda M. Thompson Jul 2011

A Breath Of Fresh Air: Methods And Obstacles For Achieving Air Pollution Reduction In Washington Factory Farm Communities, Linda M. Thompson

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

“Animal feeding operations (AFOs),” or, if large enough, “concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs),” have become increasingly concentrated in ownership, location, and quantity of animals since the 1950s. The Yakima Valley of central Washington is one area that has been subject to an influx of these industrial farms, raising health and environmental concerns for residents. Despite scientific evidence of potential harm, citizens have had difficulty enforcing air emissions regulation. The problem is twofold: the EPA is still working with the industry to develop a methodology for emission monitoring––the effectiveness of which remains unclear––and, assuming monitoring methods existed, the statutory framework provides …

Uprooted Justice: Transformations Of Law And Everyday Life In Northern Thailand, David M. Engel Jul 2011

Uprooted Justice: Transformations Of Law And Everyday Life In Northern Thailand, David M. Engel

Journal Articles

Studies of law in everyday life tend to view law either as instrumental in shaping specific decisions and practices or as constitutive of the cultural categories through which humans apprehend their world and perceive law as relevant to a greater or lesser extent. This article, however, suggests that circumstances may arise in which law’s role in relation to everyday life is neither instrumental nor constitutive but instead becomes one of radical dissociation. Based on an analysis of injuries in northern Thailand, it examines two transformational episodes in Thai legal and political history. The first occurred at the turn of the …

Remote Monitoring Of Bridges, Rajan Sen, Gray Mullins, Alberto Sagues, Julio Aguilar, Danny Winters Jul 2011

Remote Monitoring Of Bridges, Rajan Sen, Gray Mullins, Alberto Sagues, Julio Aguilar, Danny Winters

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

This report summarizes findings from a 24-month study in which the performance of cathodic protection systems for substructures of two interstate bridges was remotely monitored. The two bridges #860050 and #860054 are located on the “Alligator Alley” toll portion of eastbound I-75 in Broward County, FL. Each bridge spans two pilesupported piers inside a drainage canal. The seven steel H-piles supporting the piers are jacketed in concrete to a level just below the water surface and are cathodically protected by three magnesium anodes spaced uniformly over their submerged length.

Minerogenetic Mechanisms Occurring In The Cave Environment: An Overview, Bogdan P. Onac, Paolo Forti Jul 2011

Minerogenetic Mechanisms Occurring In The Cave Environment: An Overview, Bogdan P. Onac, Paolo Forti

KIP Articles

Perhaps man’s first motivation to explore caves, beyond using them as shelter, was the search for substances that were not available elsewhere: most of them were minerals. However, for a long time it was believed that the cave environment was not very interesting from the mineralogical point of view. This was due to the fact that most cave deposits are normally composed of a single compound: calcium carbonate. Therefore, the systematic study of cave mineralogy is of only recent origin. However, although only a limited number of natural cavities have been investigated in detail, about 350 cave minerals have already …

Berberine Acutely Activates The Glucose Transport Activity Of Glut1, Alexandra Cok, Christina Plaisier, Matthew J. Salie, Daniel S. Oram Jul 2011

Berberine Acutely Activates The Glucose Transport Activity Of Glut1, Alexandra Cok, Christina Plaisier, Matthew J. Salie, Daniel S. Oram

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Berberine, which has a long history of use in Chinese medicine, has recently been shown to have efficacy in the treatment of diabetes. While the hypoglycemic effect of berberine has been clearly documented in animal and cell line models, such as 3T3-L1 adipocytes and L6 myotube cells, the mechanism of action appears complex with data implicating activation of the insulin signaling pathway as well as activation of the exercise or AMP kinase-mediated pathway. There have been no reports of the acute affects of berberine on the transport activity of the insulin-insensitive glucose transporter, GLUT1. Therefore, we examined the acute effects …

Soziale Marktwirtschaft - Key To Economic Success Or Contradiction In Adiecto, Menno Aden

Business Review

German concept of Soziale Marktwirtschaft (social market economy, hereinafter SMW). A “system” would never explain everything. SMW therefore does not explain it all. But it is widely believed that SMW was the biggest single factor for the recovery of Germany after WW II and her performance ever since. It may be worthwhile to have a closer look at what SMW is about.

"Now My Eyes Have Seen You": A Comparative Study Of Secret Sunshine And The Book Of Job, Teng-Kuan Ng Jul 2011

"Now My Eyes Have Seen You": A Comparative Study Of Secret Sunshine And The Book Of Job, Teng-Kuan Ng

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This essay engages in a comparative study of Lee Chang-Dong's Secret Sunshine (2007) in light of the biblical book of Job, focusing on issues of grief, recovery, and theodicy. Drawing from perspectives in philosophical, mystical, and pastoral theology, three allegorical interpretations of the film's title are suggested. The eponymous “secret sunshine” adumbrates, first, the female protagonist Shin-Ae's hidden journey toward her true self, a self in which the theological virtues of faith and love are mystically internalized. Second, it intimates the quiet, unobtrusive presence of an emphatic Immanuel in the figure of Jong-Chan, the film's male protagonist. Finally, through a …

Stochastic Life-History Variation In Populations Of Western Ribbon Snakes (Thamnophis Proximus) In East Texas, Jeremy Chamberlain Jul 2011

Stochastic Life-History Variation In Populations Of Western Ribbon Snakes (Thamnophis Proximus) In East Texas, Jeremy Chamberlain

Biology Theses

Understanding variation in life-history strategies can be important when determining the influence of an organism's environment on its natural history. Variation in strategies can play a significant role on the overall fitness and survival of an individual. Some environmental conditions may influence this variation more than others. In particular, stochastic environments, such as a floodplain, may have large impacts on life history strategies of organisms living within them. Floodplains are known to have high rates of extrinsic mortality. Theoretically this should shift life-history traits toward a fast-type strategy, with fast growth rates, high annual fecundity, and larger mean body-sizes. To …
