Modifiable Disease Risk, Readiness To Change, And Psychosocial Functioning Improve With Integrative Medicine Immersion Model, Ruth Q. Wolever, Daniel M. Webber, Justin P. Meunier, Jeffrey M. Greeson, Evangeline R. Lausier, Tracy W. Gaudet

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Background—Stroke, diabetes, and coronary heart disease (CHD) remain leading causes of death in the United States and are largely attributable to lifestyle behaviors. Integrative medicine can provide a supportive partnership that focuses on improving health by identifying and implementing lifestyle changes based upon personal values and goals.

Objective—This prospective observational study was designed to assess the effectiveness of an integrative medicine intervention on modifiable disease risk, patient activation, and psychosocial risk factors for stroke, diabetes, and CHD.

Design—Sixty-three adults participated in a 3-day comprehensive, multimodal health immersion program at Duke Integrative Medicine, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina. Participants …

Mutual Mother–Offspring Vocal Recognition In An Ungulate Hider Species (Capra Hircus), Elodie F. Briefer, Alan G. Mcelligott Jul 2011

Mutual Mother–Offspring Vocal Recognition In An Ungulate Hider Species (Capra Hircus), Elodie F. Briefer, Alan G. Mcelligott

Sentience Collection

Parent–offspring recognition can be essential for offspring survival and important to avoid misdirected parental care when progeny mingle in large social groups. In ungulates, offspring anti-predator strategies (hiding vs. following) result in differences in mother–offspring interactions, and thus different selection pressures acting on the recognition process during the first weeks of life. Hider offspring are isolated and relatively stationary and silent to avoid detection by predators, whereas follower offspring are mobile and rapidly mix in large social groups. For these reasons, hiders have been suggested to show low offspring call individuality leading to unidirectional recognition of mothers by offspring and …

Urbanization And Daughter-Biased Parental Investment In Fiji, Dawn B. Neill Jul 2011

Urbanization And Daughter-Biased Parental Investment In Fiji, Dawn B. Neill

Social Sciences

Parental investment decisions guide parental actions regarding children’s productive work and are shaped by ecological context. Urban ecology enhances long-term payoffs to investment in human capital, increasing opportunity costs for work performed by children, and decreased workload should result. Using an embodied capital framework, self-reported data on urban and rural Indo-Fijian children’s work activities are compared. Results show higher workloads for older children, rural children, and girls. High scholastic achievement is associated with lower workloads for girls, but not boys. This pattern is interpreted as daughter-biased investment in the context of urbanization.

Immanence, Pluralism, And Politics, Matthew Moore Jul 2011

Immanence, Pluralism, And Politics, Matthew Moore

Political Science

The article examines whether theories based on an immanent worldview-roughly, one that denies the existence of transcendent principle or agents relevant to human life-offer a better solution to the problems of political pluralism than do transcendent theories. After reviewing three such theories-one from Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri, one from Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, and one from William Connallythe author argues that theories like Connolly's, which both make posttlve claims and explicitly acknowledge the contestability of those claims, are the most defensible. At the same time, even those theories run into the problems of transcendent theories, especially relying on …

A Preliminary Study Of The Vegetation Of Vernal Pools Of Acadia National Park, Maine, U.S.A, Brett Ciccotelli, Tanner B. Harris, Bruce Connery, Nishanta Rajakaruna

Biological Sciences

We conducted a preliminary floristic study of six vernal pools in Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Plant species were recorded on three sampling dates from April to October, 2008. Sixty-five vascular plant species from 26 families were recorded. Of these, 27 are considered occasional or uncommon in Acadia National Park. Thirteen species are new reports for vernal pools in the northeastern United States. This represents the first published study of the vernal pool flora of Acadia National Park.

Stream Channel Adjustments And Persistence Of Change In Response To Beaver Damming On A Fluvial Fan, Odell Creek, Montana, Rebekah Levine Jul 2011

Stream Channel Adjustments And Persistence Of Change In Response To Beaver Damming On A Fluvial Fan, Odell Creek, Montana, Rebekah Levine

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Beaver damming in streams is thought to increase bed elevation through in-channel sediment storage, thus beaver reintroductions are used as a river restoration tool to repair incised stream channels. However, effects of beaver damming are dependent on specific stream hydrologic and geomorphic characteristics. Data on dam effects, especially the longevity of dam effects, are limited. To investigate whether damming promotes channel aggradation and creates persistent geomorphic change, 9 reaches containing 46 cross-sections were studied on Odell Creek at Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, Centennial Valley, Montana. Odell Creek has a basin area of 46 km2, a snowmelt-dominated hydrograph and …
