Understanding A Pakistani Science Teacher's Practice Through A Life History Study, Nelofer Halai Jul 2011

Understanding A Pakistani Science Teacher's Practice Through A Life History Study, Nelofer Halai

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of the single case life history study was to understand a female science teacher's conceptions of the nature of science as explicit in her practice. While this paper highlights these understandings, an additional purpose is to give a detailed account of the process of creating a life history account through more than 13 in-depth interviews. It includes a discussion of what the author calls composite observations where the observations of the teacher and the researcher are presented as a single unified story. Also discussed are ethical issues specific to life history created due to the intimacy created by …

The Sense And Sensibility Of Qualitative Research, Bernard Smith Jul 2011

The Sense And Sensibility Of Qualitative Research, Bernard Smith

The Qualitative Report

David Silverman's new edition of Qualitative Research addresses how to engage in qualitative research with increased sensibility. The book is divided into seven sections with 23 chapters written by premier researchers. The chapters are written for students rather than the writers' peers, and while every chapter makes extensive use of the authors' fieldwork and data, John Heritage's chapter on conversational analysis (CA) stands out because he demonstrates to the reader how he made sense of a recurring piece of talk he calls an "oh-prefaced response." The papers are clearly written with helpful summaries and suggested further readings and online resources. …

Gene Set Analysis For Longitudinal Gene Expression Data, Ke Zhang, Haiyan Wang, Arne C. Bathke, Solomon W. Harrar, Hans-Peter Piepho, Youping Deng

Statistics Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Gene set analysis (GSA) has become a successful tool to interpret gene expression profiles in terms of biological functions, molecular pathways, or genomic locations. GSA performs statistical tests for independent microarray samples at the level of gene sets rather than individual genes. Nowadays, an increasing number of microarray studies are conducted to explore the dynamic changes of gene expression in a variety of species and biological scenarios. In these longitudinal studies, gene expression is repeatedly measured over time such that a GSA needs to take into account the within-gene correlations in addition to possible between-gene correlations.

RESULTS: We provide …

Analysis Of The Organization And Dynamics Of Proteins In Cell Membranes, Flor Aurelia Espinoza Hidalgo Jul 2011

Analysis Of The Organization And Dynamics Of Proteins In Cell Membranes, Flor Aurelia Espinoza Hidalgo

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Cells communicate with the outside world through membrane receptors that recognize one of many possible stimuli (hormones, antibodies, peptides) in the extracellular environment and translate this information to intracellular responses. Stimulation of the cells produces changes in the organization and dynamics of the receptors that are critical to signal transduction. Problems in signaling networks are important in understanding many diseases including cancer, allergy and asthma, so there is great interest in understanding these changes. Biologists in the Spatiotemporal Modeling of Cell Signaling Center (STMC) have generated a large amount of data about the high affinity receptor FceRI, that is found …

Crow History 1700-1950: A Political And Social Battle To Retain Their Culture, Alden Big Man Jr. Jul 2011

Crow History 1700-1950: A Political And Social Battle To Retain Their Culture, Alden Big Man Jr.

History ETDs

In my dissertation, 'Crow History 1700 — 1950: A Political and Social Battle to Retain their Culture,' I argue that the Social and Familial Kinship system utilized by the Crow is unique, and helped the Crows to preserve much of their Culture throughout the turbulent times of direct contact and assimilation. In this research I examine the movement of the Crows from eastern woodlands onto the Northern Plains, with an emphasis on the separation from the parent tribe. I argue the Crow purposely create a new and unique maternally based social and familial kinship system because of the separation from …

Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships For Predicting Chlorine Demand And Disinfection Byproducts Formation In Drinking Water, Gebhard Balthazar Luilo Jul 2011

Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships For Predicting Chlorine Demand And Disinfection Byproducts Formation In Drinking Water, Gebhard Balthazar Luilo

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Models are important tools for designing or redesigning water treatment processes and technologies to minimize disinfection byproducts (DBPs) formation without compromising disinfection efficiency. Empirical models, which are the most common, are based on bulk water quality parameters that vary with time and space. These parameters may not always have linear relationships with chlorine demand and DBPs formation which make structure-based models more attractive to study. In this dissertation, Quantitative Structure-Property Relationship (QSPR) models which make use of structural properties of individual molecules were developed using experimental data obtained from the literature. The amounts are reported in moles of chlorine (HOCl) …

Assessment Of The Biocompatibility, Stability, And Suitability Of Novel Thermoresponsive Films For The Rapid Generation Of Cellular Constructs, Jamie Reed Jul 2011

Assessment Of The Biocompatibility, Stability, And Suitability Of Novel Thermoresponsive Films For The Rapid Generation Of Cellular Constructs, Jamie Reed

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Stimuli responsive polymers (SRP) are of great interest in the bioengineering community due to their use in applications such as drug delivery and tissue engineering. One example of an SRP is poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) or pNIPAM. This SRP has the capability of changing its conformation with a slight temperature change: adherent mammalian cells spontaneously release as a confluent cell sheet, which can be harvested for cell sheet engineering purposes. Since its initial use in 1968, many researchers have used pNIPAM to obtain a cell sheet composed of their cell type of interest. The differing protocols used for these diverse cell types, …

Development Of An Assessment Of Quantitative Literacy For Miami University, Rose Marie Ward, Monica C. Schneider, James D. Kiper

Numeracy

Quantitative Literacy is a competence as important as general literacy; yet, while writing requirements are seemingly ubiquitous across the college curriculum, quantitative literacy requirements are not. The current project provides preliminary evidence of the reliability and validity of a quantitative literacy measure suitable for delivery online. A sample of 188 undergraduate students from Miami University, a midsize university in the midwestern U.S., participated in the current study. Scores on the measure, were inversely related to statistical/mathematical anxiety measures, directly related to subjective assessment of numeracy, and did not differ across gender or year in school. The resulting measure provides a …

Characterization And Development Of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus For Use As An Oncolytic Vector, Joshua F. Heiber Jul 2011

Characterization And Development Of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus For Use As An Oncolytic Vector, Joshua F. Heiber

Open Access Dissertations

Oncolytic virotherapy is emerging as a new treatment option for cancer patients. At present, there are relatively few oncolytic virus clinical trials that are underway or have been conducted, however one virus that shows promise in pre-clinical models is Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV). VSV is a naturally occurring oncolytic rhabdovirus that has the ability to preferentially replicate in and kill malignant versus normal cells. VSV also has a low seroprevalence, minimal associated morbidity and mortality in humans, and simple non-integrating genome that can be genetically manipulated, making it an optimal oncolytic vector. Currently, many labs are using a variety of …

Loss Of Dna Mismatch Repair Imparts A Selective Advantage In Planarian Adult Stem Cells, Jessica P. Hollenbach, Alissa M. Resch, Dasaradhi Palakodeti, Brenton R. Graveley, Christopher D. Heinen

UCHC Articles - Research

Lynch syndrome (LS) leads to an increased risk of early-onset colorectal and other types of cancer and is caused by germline mutations in DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes. Loss of MMR function results in a mutator phenotype that likely underlies its role in tumorigenesis. However, loss of MMR also results in the elimination of a DNA damage-induced checkpoint/apoptosis activation barrier that may allow damaged cells to grow unchecked. A fundamental question is whether loss of MMR provides pre-cancerous stem cells an immediate selective advantage in addition to establishing a mutator phenotype. To test this hypothesis in an in vivo system, …

Systematically Controlling For The Influence Of Age, Sex, Hertz And Time Post-Whole-Body Vibration Exposure On Four Measures Of Physical Performance In Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Randomized Cross-Over Study, Harold L. Merriman, C. Jayne Brahler, Kurt Jackson

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Though popular, there is little agreement on what whole-body vibration (WBV) parameters will optimize performance. This study aimed to clarify the effects of age, sex, hertz, and time on four physical function indicators in community-dwelling older adults (N = 32). Participants were exposed to 2 minutes WBV per session at either 2 Hz or 26 Hz, and outcome measures were recorded at 2-, 20-, and 40-minute post-WBV. Timed get-up-and-go and chair sit-and-reach performances improved post-WBV for both sexes, were significantly different between 2 Hz and 26 Hz treatments (P ≤ 0.05), and showed statistically significant interactions between age and gender …
