Gene Expression In The Right Ventricle During Development Of Pulmonary Hypertension, Jennifer Drake Sep 2011

Gene Expression In The Right Ventricle During Development Of Pulmonary Hypertension, Jennifer Drake

Theses and Dissertations

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a disease of the lung vessels that causes severe effects on the right ventricle of the heart; ultimately, most patients with severe PAH die as a result of right heart failure. However, little is known about the causes of right heart failure. Here, we describe a pattern of gene expression that differs between the normal rat left ventricle (LV) and right ventricle (RV). These genes are known to be involved in the development of the heart as well as adaptations to the heart during stress. This gene expression pattern is used as a baseline to …

The Experience Of Fathers Upon The Receipt Of The News That Their Newborn Babies Had Been Given A Diagnosis Of Down Syndrome : An Exploratory Study, Desiree Danielle Lowit Sep 2011

The Experience Of Fathers Upon The Receipt Of The News That Their Newborn Babies Had Been Given A Diagnosis Of Down Syndrome : An Exploratory Study, Desiree Danielle Lowit

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This exploratory study was undertaken to investigate the experience of fathers upon the receipt of the news that their newborn baby had been given a diagnosis of Down syndrome. Skotko's (2005a, b) study revealed that mothers of children with Down syndrome had predominantly negative postnatal experiences. Mothers reported feeling anxious, frightened, guilty, angry, and in a few cases suicidal. I gathered information from interviews with 13 fathers. Interview questions were designed to explore the fathers' experiences of postnatal support. The criteria for the study involved that the participants must have a biological child who was born with Down syndrome in …

Department of Chemistry Faculty Publications

The vast majority of people living with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) have pain syndrome, which has a significant impact on their quality of life. The underlying causes of HIV-1-associated pain are not likely attributable to direct viral infection of the nervous system due to the lack of evidence of neuronal infection by HIV-1. However, HIV-1 proteins are possibly involved as they have been implicated in neuronal damage and death. The current study assesses the direct effects of HIV-1 Tat, one of potent neurotoxic viral proteins released from HIV-1-infected cells, on the excitability and survival of rat primary dorsal …

Neurobiological Research That Confirms Freud's Trauma Theory And Its Implications For Treatment With Children Diagnosed With Reactive Attachment Disorders, Carla Gerber-Weintraub Sep 2011

Neurobiological Research That Confirms Freud's Trauma Theory And Its Implications For Treatment With Children Diagnosed With Reactive Attachment Disorders, Carla Gerber-Weintraub

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical thesis argues that children diagnosed with reactive attachment disorder are best served with psychoanalytic treatment. Four major components are examined to support this argument. First, the progression of reactive attachment disorder criteria set forth in the 1980 DSM-III up through a recent DSM V proposal are reviewed. Secondly, a history and development of Freud's trauma theory is discussed. Thirdly, neurobiological research of the social brain and limbic system that confirm certain hypotheses of Freud's trauma theory are outlined. Lastly, current treatment modalities used with children diagnosed with reactive attachment disorder are scrutinized. Each of these components leads to …

Looking Back, Moving Forward In The Digital Age: A Review Of The Collection Management And Development Literature, 2004–8, Lorre Smith, Daryl R. Bullis

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The collection and management of digital resources dominated collection development and management literature produced during 2004–8. Themes covered the changing nature of local collections, redefining collection management responsibilities and practices, cooperation and collaboration, and collection assessment and evaluation. The literature reflected the struggle to manage a vast array of resources while library budgets stagnated. While publishers continued to offer more bundles of electronic publications, librarians responded with strategies to collaborate and negotiate for feasible pricing structures. A culture of continuous assessment was a major topic. During this review period, access to and ownership of digital resources reemerged as a pervasive …

The Branched Actin Nucleator Arp2/3 Promotes Nuclear Migrations And Cell Polarity In The C. Elegans Zygote, William A. Mohler Sep 2011

The Branched Actin Nucleator Arp2/3 Promotes Nuclear Migrations And Cell Polarity In The C. Elegans Zygote, William A. Mohler

UCHC Articles - Research

Regulated movements of the nucleus are essential during zygote formation, cell migrations, and differentiation of neurons. The nucleus moves along microtubules (MTs) and is repositioned on F-actin at the cellular cortex. Two families of nuclear envelope proteins, SUN and KASH, link the nucleus to the actin and MT cytoskeletons during nuclear movements. However, the role of actin nucleators in nuclear migration and positioning is poorly understood. We show that the branched actin nucleator, Arp2/3, affects nuclear movements throughout embryonic and larval development in C. elegans, including nuclear migrations in epidermal cells and neuronal precursors. In one-cell embryos the migration …

Division Of Labor Between Subsets Of Lymph Node Dendritic Cells Determines The Specificity Of The Cd8 Recall Response To Influenza Infection, Jenny E. Suárez-Ramírez, Tao Wu, Young-Tae Lee, Carolina C. Aguila, Keith R. Bouchard, Linda Linda Cauley Sep 2011

Division Of Labor Between Subsets Of Lymph Node Dendritic Cells Determines The Specificity Of The Cd8 Recall Response To Influenza Infection, Jenny E. Suárez-Ramírez, Tao Wu, Young-Tae Lee, Carolina C. Aguila, Keith R. Bouchard, Linda Linda Cauley

UCHC Articles - Research

Cytotoxic T lymphocytes are important targets for vaccines against a wide variety of infections that enter the body via mucosal tissues. To induce effective immunity these vaccines must include the most protective epitopes and elicit rapid recall responses at the site of infection. Although live attenuated viruses are sometimes used to induce cellular immunity against recurrent influenza infections, the mechanisms that determine the magnitude of the response to individual viral components are very poorly defined. Heterosubtypic infections in B6 mice illustrate an additional level of complexity, when the antigen-specificity of the response shifts dramatically between primary and secondary challenge. This …

New Civil Liability For Corporations: The Seventh Circuit Takes A Stand On The Alien Tort Statute, Xiomara C. Angulo Sep 2011

New Civil Liability For Corporations: The Seventh Circuit Takes A Stand On The Alien Tort Statute, Xiomara C. Angulo

Seventh Circuit Review

Many Americans may be surprised to learn that because of the Alien Tort Statute (ATS), federal courts are open to foreign plaintiffs who may bring claims against non-immune public officials for violations of international law. Recent litigation in the field has hit a speed bump, however, and the multi-million dollar question is whether the ATS covers corporations. The circuit courts of appeals are split on the issue. The Seventh Circuit ruled in Flomo v. Firestone National Rubber Co. that the ATS does apply to corporations that commit violations of international law. In reaching this conclusion, the Seventh Circuit rejected the …

Immigration To Germany: Past And Present Experiences, Peter O'Brien Sep 2011

Immigration To Germany: Past And Present Experiences, Peter O'Brien

Political Science Faculty Research

Germany long stood as the epitome of the ethno-nationalist approach to immigration. However, passage of the new Citizenship Law in 2000, which introduced jus soli, seemed to signal a sea change in the direction of a postnational outlook. This paper warns against seeing in the new legislation an emerging normative consensus around the kind of liberal cosmopolitanism advocated by the likes of Jürgen Habermas, Ulrich Beck or Will Kymlicka. I document the persistent allure and influence of nationalism and point to the growing appeal and sway of proposals and policies informed by a postmodern normative outlook. Germany’s normative landscape, …

Application Of A Split Luciferase Complementation Assay For Thedetection Of Viral Protein-Protein Interactions, Qiji Deng, Dan Wang, Xiaoxiao Xiang, Philip R. Hardwidge, Radhey S. Kaushik, Thorsten Wolff, Suvobrata Chakravarty, Feng Li

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Intraviral protein-protein interactions are critical for virus survival in the host. Discovery of such interactions is important to understand molecular mechanisms of viral replication and pathogenesis. The development of a cell-based assay that can be employed to examine systematically viral protein interactions is described. The method, known as the Split Luciferase Complementation Assay (SLCA), is based on the principle that N- and C-terminal domains of luciferase alone do not emit luminescence; however, if fused to interacting proteins the two nonfunctional halves can be brought into close enough proximity through a specific protein-protein interaction to restore the functions of the enzyme …

Domain Requirements For The Diverse Immune Regulatory Functions Of Foxp3, Wei-Ping Zeng, Vincent E. Sollars, Andrea Del Pilar Belalcazar Sep 2011

Domain Requirements For The Diverse Immune Regulatory Functions Of Foxp3, Wei-Ping Zeng, Vincent E. Sollars, Andrea Del Pilar Belalcazar

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Foxp3 is responsible for the major immunological features of Treg cells, including hypoproliferation in vitro, immune suppression of conventional T cells and resistance to Th2 cell differentiation. In addition to the Forkhead domain, the Foxp3 protein contains the N-terminal, zinc finger and leucine zipper domains. To understand how these domains contribute to Foxp3 functions, we systematically compared the roles of these domains in determining the 3 major immunological features of Treg cells. We designed a bridge-mediated mutagenesis method to generate Foxp3 mutants with complete deletion of each of the domains. CD4 T cells expressing the Foxp3 mutant with deletion of …

Carol Anne Bond V The United States Of America: How A Woman Scorned Threatened The Chemical Weapons Convention, Anna Muldoon, Sarah Kornblet, Rebecca L. Katz

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

The case of Carol Anne Bond v the United States of America stemmed from a domestic dispute when Ms. Bond attempted to retaliate against her best friend by attacking her with chemical agents. What has emerged is a much greater issue--a test of standing on whether a private citizen can challenge the Tenth Amendment. Instead of being prosecuted in state court for assault, Ms. Bond was charged and tried in district court under a federal criminal statute passed as part of implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). Ms. Bond's argument rests on the claim that the statute exceeded the …

Local Food Systems

Like everyone else in these troubled economic times, Mainers are looking for ways to create jobs that will remain relevant and vital in a global economy, that cannot be outsourced, and that will regenerate rather than exploit our natural resources.

A growing number of people believe that a food system rooted in local farms, fisheries, and food production and distribution enterprises can strengthen Maine’s economy and its communities’ health, thereby increasing revenue and decreasing an expense that is crippling government agencies and individuals alike – healthcare. Business people who want to make a living related to food, and public and …

“Above All Greek, Above All Roman Fame”: Classical Rhetoric In America During The Colonial And Early National Periods, James M. Farrell Sep 2011

“Above All Greek, Above All Roman Fame”: Classical Rhetoric In America During The Colonial And Early National Periods, James M. Farrell

Communication

The broad and profound influence of classical rhetoric in early America can be observed in both the academic study of that ancient discipline, and in the practical approaches to persuasion adopted by orators and writers in the colonial period, and during the early republic. Classical theoretical treatises on rhetoric enjoyed wide authority both in college curricula and in popular treatments of the art. Classical orators were imitated as models of republican virtue and oratorical style. Indeed, virtually every dimension of the political life of early Ameria bears the imprint of a classical conception of public discourse. This essay marks the …
