Using Dialogue Journals To Foster A Student-Teacher Relationship In The Elementary Classroom, Jamie Horton Sep 2011

Using Dialogue Journals To Foster A Student-Teacher Relationship In The Elementary Classroom, Jamie Horton

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to implement dialogue journals into a fourth grade classroom to find out if they fostered a relationship between the teacher and students. Over the course of five weeks, students were each given a journal in which he/she would correspond with me. As a class, topics to write about were brainstormed. However, students were welcomed to write about any topic of their choice. Students were asked to write one journal entry per week. Journals were returned the following Monday morning with my response. Data collection consisted of pre-dialogue journal survey, anecdotal teacher notes, the dialogue …

Tax Neutrality And Tax Amenities, David M. Hasen Sep 2011

Tax Neutrality And Tax Amenities, David M. Hasen

Faculty Publications

Neutrality has been a dominant theme in scholarly and policy debates on international taxation for fifty years. This paper questions whether the concept of tax neutrality is adequately specified for analyzing the efficiency properties of international tax systems. As distinct from the closed economy setting, in the open economy setting, tax incentive effects include the redirection of both capital and tax revenues from one jurisdiction to another. Because tax revenues finance infrastructure and other productivity-enhancing goods – so-called “tax amenities” – and because capital burdens infrastructure, one consequence of the reallocation of tax revenues and assets is the adjustment of …

Toxoplasma Gondii Rhoptry Kinase Rop16 Activates Stat3 And Stat6 Resulting In Cytokine Inhibition And Arginase-1-Dependent Growth Control, Barbara A. Butcher, Barbara A. Fox, Leah M. Rommereim, Sung Guk Kim, Kirk J. Maurer, Felix Yarovinsky, De'broski R. Herbert, David J. Bzik, Eric Y. Denkers

Dartmouth Scholarship

The ROP16 kinase of Toxoplasma gondii is injected into the host cell cytosol where it activates signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT)-3 and STAT6. Here, we generated a ROP16 deletion mutant on a Type I parasite strain background, as well as a control complementation mutant with restored ROP16 expression. We investigated the biological role of the ROP16 molecule during T. gondii infection. Infection of mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages with rop16-deleted (ΔROP16) parasites resulted in increased amounts of IL-12p40 production relative to the ROP16-positive RH parental strain. High level IL-12p40 production in ΔROP16 infection was dependent on the host …

Effect Of Passive Integrated Transponder Tag Implantation Site On Tag Retention, Growth, And Survival Of Two Sizes Of Juvenile Bluegills And Yellow Perch, Mark A. Kaemingk, Michael J. Weber, Paul R. Mckenna, Michael L. Brown Sep 2011

Brown

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags are commonly used to monitor growth, habitat use, activity rates, and survival of individual fish. However, for successful completion of research objectives, the tags must be retained and must not affect fish growth or survival. We compared the effects of PIT tagging location on tag retention, growth, and survival of juvenile bluegills Lepomis macrochirus and yellowperch Perca flavescens. In total, 80 bluegills and 80 yellow perch from two size-classes (75–101 and 128–162 mm total length) were randomly assigned to a control or to one of three tagging location treatments: isthmus, body cavity, or dorsal musculature. …

Towards A New Paradigm Of Non-Captive Research On Cetacean Cognition, Lori Marino, Toni Frohoff Sep 2011

Towards A New Paradigm Of Non-Captive Research On Cetacean Cognition, Lori Marino, Toni Frohoff

Experimentation Collection

Contemporary knowledge of impressive neurophysiology and behavior in cetaceans, combined with increasing opportunities for studying free-ranging cetaceans who initiate sociable interaction with humans, are converging to highlight serious ethical considerations and emerging opportunities for a new era of progressive and less-invasive cetacean research. Most research on cetacean cognition has taken place in controlled captive settings, e.g., research labs, marine parks. While these environments afford a certain amount of experimental rigor and logistical control they are fraught with limitations in external validity, impose tremendous stress on the part of the captive animals, and place burdens on populations from which they are …

Ethical And Scientific Considerations Regarding Animal Testing And Research, Hope Ferdowsian, Nancy Beck Sep 2011

Ethical And Scientific Considerations Regarding Animal Testing And Research, Hope Ferdowsian, Nancy Beck

Experimentation Collection

In 1959, William Russell and Rex Burch published the seminal book, The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique, which emphasized reduction, refinement, and replacement of animal use, principles which have since been referred to as the ‘‘3 Rs’’. These principles encouraged researchers to work to reduce the number of animals used in experiments to the minimum considered necessary, refine or limit the pain and distress to which animals are exposed, and replace the use of animals with non-animal alternatives when possible. Despite the attention brought to this issue by Russell and Burch and since, the number of animals used in research …

Malawi: Classroom Construction, Solar Water Pump, And Rocket Stove, Ryan Arling, Kelli Schimmoelller, Mark Abram

ETHOS Technical Reports

For a ten week period, Ryan Arling, Mark Abram, and Kelli Schimmoeller worked on various projects in Malawi, Africa. The main project was the design and construction of a classroom building for Bawa Orphan Care Centre using local materials and labor. The school project relied upon the very limited availability of materials in a developing country. The project was completed, except for the iron sheets of the roof, which will be installed when funding becomes available.

A second project involved the diagnosis of an existing solar-powered water pump system that once pumped water to the hilltop of Sangilo Village, including …

Guatemala: Improving Water Supplies, Christopher Denzinger, Kristen Crum Sep 2011

Guatemala: Improving Water Supplies, Christopher Denzinger, Kristen Crum

ETHOS Technical Reports

Guatemala is a Central American country with a long history dating back to the Mayan civilization. Despite such a long history, the country continues to have a lack of sufficient and clean water supply for its people, especially in rural areas. During the summer of 2011, two students from the University of Dayton travelled to the small village of Las Conchas, Guatemala to work on rain water catchment systems for the village. Two systems were constructed in the village of Las Conchas: one for a local school and one for the guest house. As well, one system was constructed in …

Obstetrical Forceps: History, Mystery, And Morality, Ronald L. Young Sep 2011

Obstetrical Forceps: History, Mystery, And Morality, Ronald L. Young

Houston History of Medicine Lectures (2006-2012)

The history of obstetrical forceps has almost always been one cloaked in controversy after a long history of being shrouded in mystery. Forceps have a long history and have evolved from facilitating the delivery of dead fetuses to aiding in the delivery and survival of live babies. In the middle of all of this arises the story of the Chamberlain family whose contribution was enormous but whose behaviors pushed at the envelope of (at least) our present-day concepts of medical ethics. This lecture traces an interesting story that spans a millennium.

Curated Exhibit: Artistry Of Bookplates, Laura J. Hall

Posters and Presentations

The Artistry of Bookplates exhibit, curated by Laura J. Hall, MFA, explored the history and artistic development of bookplates as markers of ownership in books. From early armorial designs to more modern forms influenced by allegorical figures and printing techniques, bookplates have evolved alongside the history of printing. The exhibit featured examples from the Health Sciences Library's general and special collections, as well as reproductions of medical or health-related bookplates. It highlighted the aesthetic and historical significance of bookplates, demonstrating how they reflect both personal ownership and cultural trends. September 7, 2011 - August 30, 2012
