Sequential Alterations In Catabolic And Anabolic Gene Expression Parallel Pathological Changes During Progression Of Monoiodoacetate-Induced Arthritis, Jin Nam, Priyangi Perera, Jie Liu, Bjoern Rath, James Deschner, Robert Gassner, Timothy A. Butterfield, Sudha Agarwal Sep 2011

Sequential Alterations In Catabolic And Anabolic Gene Expression Parallel Pathological Changes During Progression Of Monoiodoacetate-Induced Arthritis, Jin Nam, Priyangi Perera, Jie Liu, Bjoern Rath, James Deschner, Robert Gassner, Timothy A. Butterfield, Sudha Agarwal

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Chronic inflammation is one of the major causes of cartilage destruction in osteoarthritis. Here, we systematically analyzed the changes in gene expression associated with the progression of cartilage destruction in monoiodoacetate-induced arthritis (MIA) of the rat knee. Sprague Dawley female rats were given intra-articular injection of monoiodoacetate in the knee. The progression of MIA was monitored macroscopically, microscopically and by micro-computed tomography. Grade 1 damage was observed by day 5 post-monoiodoacetate injection, progressively increasing to Grade 2 by day 9, and to Grade 3-3.5 by day 21. Affymetrix GeneChip was utilized to analyze the transcriptome-wide changes in gene expression, and …

Redescription Of Centruroides Granosus (Thorell, 1876) And Identity Of Centrurus Granosus Simplex Thorell, 1876 (Scorpiones: Buthidae), Luis F. De Armas, Rolando Teruel, František Kovařík Sep 2011

Redescription Of Centruroides Granosus (Thorell, 1876) And Identity Of Centrurus Granosus Simplex Thorell, 1876 (Scorpiones: Buthidae), Luis F. De Armas, Rolando Teruel, František Kovařík

Euscorpius

Centruroides granosus (Thorell, 1876) is redescribed based on several specimens of both sexes from Panama. We demonstrate that the original description of this species was based on an immature (subadult) male, which is herein designated as the lectotype. We conclude that Centrurus granosus simplex Thorell, 1876 is a senior synonym of Centruroides testaceus arubensis (Bakker, 1963), and elevate it to species level: Centruroides simplex (Thorell, 1876), comb. nov.

Buthus Awashensis Sp. N. From Ethiopia (Scorpiones: Buthidae), František Kovařík Sep 2011

Buthus Awashensis Sp. N. From Ethiopia (Scorpiones: Buthidae), František Kovařík

Euscorpius

Buthus awashensis sp. n. from the Awash region of Ethiopia, is described and compared with B. berberensis Pocock, 1900 from Somaliland. The new species is characterized chiefly by the total length of 50–65 mm. B. berberensis reaches only 45–55 mm and differs in coloration, with adults having the chela of pedipalp and chelicerae entirely yellow without dark reticulations, and by mophometric characters, mainly the shape of the chela of pedipalp. Pectinal marginal tips extend the to proximal end of the fourth sternite in males of B. awashensis sp. n. and to proximal end of the fifth sternite in males of …

Uncovering New Functions For Micrornas In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Allison L. Abbott Sep 2011

Uncovering New Functions For Micrornas In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Allison L. Abbott

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

In the race to understand microRNA (miRNA) functions in development and physiology, Caenorhabditis elegans investigators were the first out of the gate with the cloning and analysis of the lin-4 and let-7 miRNAs [1,2]. The starting point of strong, penetrant loss of function phenotypes facilitated these advancements. However, subsequent functional analysis of miRNAs in C. elegans was hampered by the lack of easily observable loss-of-function phenotypes [3]. There are several possible models to account for this observation. First, redundancy between related miRNAs can account for the absence of phenotypes in mutants missing individual miRNA genes [4,5]. Second, miRNAs may also …

A Plea For The Sabbath, Taylor Lewis

ATS Digital Resources

"The Sabbath presents the most purely religious, and at the same time the least sectarian, of all moral questions. It has, however, been generally regarded under two aspects, and defended on tow distinct if not opposing grounds. One of these may be call the scriptural or theological, the other the physical or secular."

Effects Of Prescribed Burning On Vegetation And Swainson’S Warbler Space Use Patterns In Eastern Arkansas, Jeremy Lewis Everitts Sep 2011

Effects Of Prescribed Burning On Vegetation And Swainson’S Warbler Space Use Patterns In Eastern Arkansas, Jeremy Lewis Everitts

Student Theses and Dissertations

The Swainson’s warbler Limnothlypis swainsonii) is a species of conservation concern throughout the southeastern U.S. An understanding of Swainson’s warbler habitat requirements has been documented, although little is known about how prescribed burning may improve or potentially negatively impact their populations. To learn more about the ecology of this secretive species and understand the effects of management on habitat use patterns, I studied the effects of prescribed burning on a population of Swainson’s warblers in the St. Francis National Forest in Arkansas. With the help of coworkers, I radio−tracked 45 Swainson’s warblers and collected habitat data at 1,043 sites within …
