Treatment Of Mental Disorders In Pregnancy: A Review Of Neuroleptics, Antidepressants, And Lithium Carbonate, Lawrence L. Kerns, Md Sep 2011

Treatment Of Mental Disorders In Pregnancy: A Review Of Neuroleptics, Antidepressants, And Lithium Carbonate, Lawrence L. Kerns, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Pregnancy is frequently complicated by the development or recurrence of a serious mental disorder; neurotic, major affective, and psychotic illnesses have all been observed (1-4). When a major mental disorder arises in a pregnant woman and threatens the health or life of the patient and/or fetus, it should be treated early and aggressively to minimize complications and forestall the advance of the disease. Nonbiologic methods like individual psychotherapy, couples or family therapy, social casework, and hospitalization in a supportive, structured milieu should form the first line of treatment. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may be the treatment of choice for some patients, …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2011-09-15, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Picture Recognition Of Food By Macaques (Macaca Silenus), Peter G. Judge Sep 2011

Picture Recognition Of Food By Macaques (Macaca Silenus), Peter G. Judge

Faculty Journal Articles

Pictorial representations of three-dimensional objects are often used to investigate animal cognitive abilities; however, investigators rarely evaluate whether the animals conceptualize the two-dimensional image as the object it is intended to represent. We tested for picture recognition in lion-tailed macaques by presenting five monkeys with digitized images of familiar foods on a touch screen. Monkeys viewed images of two different foods and learned that they would receive a piece of the one they touched first. After demonstrating that they would reliably select images of their preferred foods on one set of foods, animals were transferred to images of a second …

Publications and Research

Tuberculosis (TB) treatment is hampered by the long duration of antibiotic therapy required to achieve cure. This indolent response has been partly attributed to the ability of subpopulations of less metabolically active Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) to withstand killing by current anti-TB drugs. We have used immune modulation with a phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4) inhibitor, CC-3052, that reduces tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) production by increasing intracellular cAMP in macrophages, to examine the crosstalk between host and pathogen in rabbits with pulmonary TB during treatment with isoniazid (INH). Based on DNA microarray, changes in host gene expression during CC-3052 treatment of Mtb infected …

Using Reputation Based Trust To Overcome Malfunctions And Malicious Failures In Electric Power Protection Systems, Jose E. Fadul Sep 2011

Using Reputation Based Trust To Overcome Malfunctions And Malicious Failures In Electric Power Protection Systems, Jose E. Fadul

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation advocates the use of reputation-based trust in conjunction with a trust management framework based on network flow techniques to form a trust management toolkit (TMT) for the defense of future Smart Grid enabled electric power grid from both malicious and non-malicious malfunctions. Increases in energy demand have prompted the implementation of Smart Grid technologies within the power grid. Smart Grid technologies enable Internet based communication capabilities within the power grid, but also increase the grid's vulnerability to cyber attacks. The benefits of TMT augmented electric power protection systems include: improved response times, added resilience to malicious and non-malicious …

Design And Control Of Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles, Michael L. Anderson Sep 2011

Design And Control Of Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles, Michael L. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Flapping wing Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) continues to be a growing field, with ongoing research into unsteady, low Re aerodynamics, micro-fabrication, and fluid-structure interaction. However, research into flapping wing control of such MAVs continues to lag. Existing research uniformly consists of proposed control laws that are validated by computer simulations of quasi-steady blade-element formulae. Such simulations use numerous assumptions and cannot be trusted to fully describe the flow physics. Instead, such control laws must be validated on hardware. Here, a novel control technique is proposed called Bi-harmonic Amplitude and Bias Modulation (BABM) which can generate forces and moments in 5 …

Dll4-Notch Signaling Mediates Tumor Resistance To Anti-Vegf Therapy In Vivo, J-L Li, Rca Sainson, Ce Oon, H Turley, Et Al Sep 2011

Dll4-Notch Signaling Mediates Tumor Resistance To Anti-Vegf Therapy In Vivo, J-L Li, Rca Sainson, Ce Oon, H Turley, Et Al

School of Biomedical Sciences

Resistance to VEGF inhibitors is emerging as a major clinical problem. Notch signaling has been implicated in tumor angiogenesis. Therefore, to investigate mechanisms of resistance to angiogenesis inhibitors, we transduced human glioblastoma cells with retroviruses encoding Notch delta-like ligand 4 (DLL4), grew them as tumor xenografts and then treated the murine hosts with the VEGF-A inhibitor bevacizumab. We found that DLL4-mediated tumor resistance to bevacizumab in vivo. The large vessels induced by DLL4-Notch signaling increased tumor blood supply and were insensitive to bevacizumab. However, blockade of Notch signaling by dibenzazepine, a ?-secretase inhibitor, disrupted the large vessels and abolished the …

Diagnosis In The Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, James H. Dallman, Md, Cpt, Mc

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is an uncommon, potentially lethal complication of treatment with antipsychotic medication. First described in American journals by Delay and Deniker in 1968 (1), this syndrome has been reported for many years in the European and Japanese literature.

Carbamazepine In Treatment Of The Violent Psychotic Patient, Lauren A. Pate, Md Sep 2011

Carbamazepine In Treatment Of The Violent Psychotic Patient, Lauren A. Pate, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Violence in the psychiatric setting may be perpetrated by patients with a variety of diagnoses including character disorders, episodic dyscontrol syndromes, and drug or alcohol intoxication. The violent behavior of aggressive psychotic patients is typically the most bizarre, unpredictable, and the least responsive to intervention with neuroleptics or lithium carbonate. Carbamazepine, an established anticonvulsant, has achieved growing prominence as an adjunctive measure in treatment of the violent psychotic. This paper will review the literature and summarize the posited pharmacological mechanisms, reported side effects, and clinical experience with carbamazepine in controlling the symptoms of violence and aggression in psychosis.

The Stress Factor: Exploring The Possibility Of A Psychological Component To Cancer, Bernard M. Edelstein, Md Sep 2011

The Stress Factor: Exploring The Possibility Of A Psychological Component To Cancer, Bernard M. Edelstein, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

As dwellers in the same house, it seems only logical that psyche and soma would be interdependent , that well-being in one would promote health in the other, and that illness in one would soon become manifest in its partner. Yet quantifying this intuitive relationship has long been a difficult task. Establishing a mechanism for disease-heart disease, infectious disease, neoplastic disease which can withstand the scrutiny of experimental rigor, is difficult enough. To introduce a seemingly not quantifiable entity such as psychology in the form of stress or anxiety presents such great complexity that for a long time it seemed …

Psychoanalysis: Science Or Fiction?, Emanuel E. Garcia Sep 2011

Psychoanalysis: Science Or Fiction?, Emanuel E. Garcia

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

The completion of this paper comes coincidentally at a time when a book by a scholarly philosopher, Adolf Grunbaum, entitled The Foundations of Psychoanalysis:A Philosophical Critique, has just been published and purports to answer the question of the scientific status of analysis. This temporally follows Jeffrey Masson's work (1) which accuses Freud of abandoning the so-called seduction hypothesis and by so doing laying unsound groundwork for the "science" that consumes Freud's nearly limitless energies . In short, it is a period in which psychoanalysis finds itself condemned, but perhaps in a …
