Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

The human placenta expresses the genes for proopiomelanocortin and the major stress hormone, corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), profoundly altering the "fight or flight" stress system in mother and fetus. As pregnancy progresses, the levels of these stress hormones, including maternal cortisol, increase dramatically. These endocrine changes are important for fetal maturation, but if the levels are altered (e.g., in response to stress), they influence (program) the fetal nervous system with long-term consequences. The evidence indicates that fetal exposure to elevated levels of stress hormones (i) delays fetal nervous system maturation, (ii) restricts the neuromuscular development and alters the stress response of …

Oil Dispersants And Human Health Effects, James P. Fabisiak, Bernard Goldstein Jan 2011

Oil Dispersants And Human Health Effects, James P. Fabisiak, Bernard Goldstein

Coastal Response Research Center

The explosion and subsequent blowout of the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) offshore drilling rig on April 20, 2010, led to the largest accidental offshore oil spill since the advent of the petroleum industry, dwarfed only by the deliberate release of crude oil by Iraqi forces during the Persian Gulf War. Over the time until the well was capped on July 15, approximately 200 million gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico from the ocean floor beneath the well site located approximately 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana. For perspective, this amount is nearly 20 times the amount of …

Rit Gtpase Signaling Mediates Oxidative Stress Resistance And Survival Of Adult Newborn Neurons After Traumatic Brain Injury, Weikang Cai Jan 2011

Rit Gtpase Signaling Mediates Oxidative Stress Resistance And Survival Of Adult Newborn Neurons After Traumatic Brain Injury, Weikang Cai

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

The small GTPases function as molecular switches to control diverse signaling cascades. The mammalian Rit and Rin, along with Drosophila Ric, comprise an evolutionarily conserved subfamily of the Ras-related GTPases. Previous studies using cultured cell models suggested that Rit was involved in the control of cell proliferation, transformation, neuronal differentiation, morphogenesis, and cell survival, but the principal physiological function of Rit remained uncharacterized.

To address this outstanding question, we employed a genetic approach, engineering a Rit knockout mouse. Using this animal model, we demonstrate a central role of Rit in governing cell survival in a p38-dependent fashion. Primary mouse embryonic …

Nutritional Properties Of The Invasive Lionfish: A Delicious And Nutritious Approach For Controlling The Invasion, James A. Morris, Jr., Amber Thomas, Andrew L. Rhyne, Nancy Breen E. Breen, Lad Akins, Barry Nash

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Lionfish, Pterois volitans and P. miles, are native to the Indo-Pacific and have recently invaded the Western Atlantic Ocean. Strategies for control of this invasion have included limited removal programs and promotion of lionfish consumption at both local and commercial scales. We demonstrate that lionfish meat contains higher levels of healthy n-3 fatty acids than some frequently consumed native marine fish species. Mean lionfish fillet yield was 30.5% of the total body wet weight, a value that is similar to that of some grouper and porgy species. A sensory evaluation indicated that lionfish meet the acceptability threshold of most consumers.

Negotiated Regulation: The Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board As A Model Regulatory Process, Caroline E. Wellman

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Using a comparative framework and based on interviews with the primary actors involved in the debate for and against humane farm animal standards in Ohio, this thesis examines the roles of special and public interest groups, bureaucrats, technocrats, and the public in the rulemaking process of the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board. This study finds that the creation of the board as a policy solution was likely impossible without the efforts of a policy entrepreneur and a "fixer;" that the board's relevance relies on a problem-setting approach to developing standards that includes a multitude of interests; and that continued public …

Information seeking on websites has become more and more challenging for people who are blind. Screen readers attempt to make that task easier by introducing new commands and functionality but there still exists a fundamental gap in the difficulty for people who are blind compared to their sighted counterparts. This research identifies the strategies used by people who are blind and sighted to create an information seeking model, develop the Keywords Expected for Your Search (KEYS) conceptual model for assisting task performance and evaluate a KEYS prototype of this concept for information search and retrieval.

This information seeking model was …

Environmental Enrichment-Mediated Neuroprotection Against Traumatic Brain Injury:Role Of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, Kyle Leann Traver

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Each year there are over 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in the United States causing long-term health deficits and significant medical costs. This growing epidemic has led researchers to find methods for treating and preventing these injuries. Environmental Enrichment (EE) is an innovative technique shown to improve cognitive and functional outcomes following a TBI; however, the beneficial effects before injury have not been established. Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) has been determined as a neuroprotective biomolecule in TBI. This research examined these two protective components and their roles in TBI. It was hypothesized that BDNF mRNA and protein levels would …

Human Micro-Range/Micro-Doppler Signature Extraction, Association, And Statistical Characterization For High-Resolution Radar, Orelle Ryan Fogle Jan 2011

Human Micro-Range/Micro-Doppler Signature Extraction, Association, And Statistical Characterization For High-Resolution Radar, Orelle Ryan Fogle

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Recently, the use of micro-Doppler (μD) radar signatures for classification has become an area of focus, in particular for the case of dynamic targets where many components are interacting over time. To fully exploit the signature information, individual scattering centers may be extracted and associated over the full target observation. Due to the complexity of the target signature, the automated analysis is very difficult. However, the availability of ultra-fine resolution or micro-range (μR) resolution along with target scattering knowledge, can aid this process immensely. Here, we describe a feature extraction algorithm which utilizes both μD and …

The Air Close To The Trees: Evolution And Innovation In U.S. Army Assault Helicopter Units During The Vietnam War, Adam Thomas Givens Jan 2011

The Air Close To The Trees: Evolution And Innovation In U.S. Army Assault Helicopter Units During The Vietnam War, Adam Thomas Givens

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the Vietnam War the United States Army's use of assault helicopters was unprecedented in modern warfare. Although planners originally anticipated their utilization on a European battlefield rather than against an insurgency, Army Aviation adapted, allowing them to overcome an uncertain future. Due to the unconventional nature of the conflict, continual revisions in tactics, techniques, and procedures ensured that assault helicopter doctrine was never concrete, but always shifting. Multiple factors influenced these developments, and manifold channels of dissemination allowed combat knowledge ultimately to influence training and doctrine. This thesis finds that previous works focus too heavily upon the initial large-scale …

Persisiting Sensitization Of Depressive-Like Behavior And Thermogenic Response During Maternal Separation In Pre- And Post Weaning Guinea Pigs, Randi Lynn Schneider Jan 2011

Persisiting Sensitization Of Depressive-Like Behavior And Thermogenic Response During Maternal Separation In Pre- And Post Weaning Guinea Pigs, Randi Lynn Schneider

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Early attachment disruption is thought to promote later onset of depressive illness through a process involving sensitization. Maternal separation in guinea pig pups (~21 days of age) produces depressive-like behavior and core body temperature fluctuations that appear to be mediated by proinflammatory activity. These responses are enhanced during repeated separations over several days. Here, enhanced depressive-like behavior and core body temperature responses were observed from the early pre-weaning to the periadolescent period (~10-40 days of age) and persisted for more than a week. The greatest temperature response was observed during the final separation. These results demonstrate persisting sensitization of behavioral …

V1-Derived Renshaw Cells And Ia Inhibitory Interneurons Differentiate Early During Development, Ana Benito González Jan 2011

V1-Derived Renshaw Cells And Ia Inhibitory Interneurons Differentiate Early During Development, Ana Benito González

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Locomotor development is dependent on the maturation of spinal cord circuits controlling motor output, but little is known about the development of the spinal interneurons that control motoneuron activity. This study focused on the development of Renshaw cells (RCs) and Ia inhibitory interneurons (IaINs), which mediate recurrent and reciprocal inhibition, respectively, two basic inhibitory circuits for motorneuron control. Both interneurons originate from the same progenitor pool (p1) giving rise to ventral spinal embryonic interneurons denominated V1. V1-derived interneurons (V1-INs) establish local inhibitory connections with ipsilateral motoneurons and express the transcription factor engrailed-1. This characteristic permitted the generation of transgenic mice …

Multi-Objectivization In Genetic Algorithms, Darrell F. Lochtefeld Jan 2011

Multi-Objectivization In Genetic Algorithms, Darrell F. Lochtefeld

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Multi-objectivization is the process of reformulating a single-objective problem into a multi-objective problem and solving it with a multi-objective method in order to provide a solution to the original single-objective problem. Multi-objectivization differs from other traditional divide-and-conquer techniques-the method splits the objective function rather than the search space. Prior to recent evidence, such reformulations were thought to make a problem more complex. However, more recent research suggests that decomposition in the objective space can lead to useful optimization techniques when coupled with a population-based search. Machine based optimization techniques are varied but often based upon an analogy to real-world phenomena. …

A Probabilistic Assessment Of Vertebral Cortical Bone Fracture Of Intraosteonal Structures, Isaac Graham Mabe Jan 2011

A Probabilistic Assessment Of Vertebral Cortical Bone Fracture Of Intraosteonal Structures, Isaac Graham Mabe

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Cortical bone is a porous structure. The presence of these pores creates the possibility of a local overstressed area that has the likelihood of premature failure. Some failure modes of the vertebral endplates, for example subsidence which occurs at rates as high as 77 percent, can be better predicted with further understanding of failure mechanisms and the ability to predict those mechanisms. A probabilistic assessment of the pore size and its contribution to the fracture toughness has not been investigated in the cortical shell of the vertebral endplates. This research develops a probabilistic model that has the ability to determine …

The human-associated microbiota has been the focus of much current research, with the microbiota inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract of particular interest. These organisms play many roles in human health and well-being. However, shifts in the composition of the intestinal microbiota have been associated with diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and colon cancer. Several recent studies have reported on the distal gut microbiota composition of healthy adults and those with IBS, while there is a lack of studies devoted to adolescents. This study utilized a custom-designed Affymetrix Microbiota Array capable of detecting 775 phylo-species of intestinal bacteria …

Protein kinase inhibition by staurosporine causes apoptotic volume decrease involving potassium (K) channels in immortalized human B3 lens epithelial cells (LECs). Here, the effect of two pro-apoptotic protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitors [12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate (TPA) and chelerythrine (CET)] were studied on membrane K transport in a fetal human LEC line (FHL124) by western blotting, immunofluorescence, ion flux, ATP, apoptosis, and biotinylation assays. Long term TPA exposure (0-6 h) inhibited 75% of Na-K-2Cl cotransport (NKCC). In contrast, short term (0-20 min) exposure to 50 μM CET reduced Na/K pump and NKCC by >90% and >70%, respectively, without retrieval from the membrane into …

Differentiation Of Megakaryocytes/Platelets And Neurons From Human Endometrial Stromal Progenitor Cells, Jinju Wang Jan 2011

Differentiation Of Megakaryocytes/Platelets And Neurons From Human Endometrial Stromal Progenitor Cells, Jinju Wang

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Human endometrium is a high dynamic tissue that contains stem/progenitor cells. These endometrial stromal progenitor cells (hESCs) have been differentiated into a number of mesodermal lineages. There is limited information on differentiating hESCs into neurons, and no information on differentiating hESCs into megakaryocytes (MKs) and platelets (PLTs). The aim of this work was to investigate the possibility of differentiating hESCs into two distinct lineages: MKs, with subsequent PLT formation, and neurons.

We isolated hESCs from human endometrial tissue and cultured the cells for 4-6 passages. Before each differentiation experiment, the purity of hESCs was confirmed by flow cytometry analysis which …

To allow automatic assessment of computed tomography (CT) images of long bones, the identification of the location of regions of interest is important. The distance between the distal and proximal styloids may act as reference points for bone length; however, the locations of the distal and proximal growth plates represent further important reference features. The current methods to locate these feature positions are manual. In this project, we attempt to find these feature positions automatically.

A CT data set was split into two subsets, a development set, and a validation set. We first extracted basic information from the stack and …

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the microvascular complications of type II diabetes and a leading cause for the development of end stage renal disease. Renin angiotensin system (RAS) plays a pivotal role in the development and progression of diabetic nephropathy. Hyperglycemia activates RAS and increases tissue and circulating levels of angiotensin II (Ang II) and aldosterone. A new component of RAS, angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), has been shown to be renoprotective in early stages of diabetes. The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that strict glycemic control using rosiglitazone or treatment with mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) …

Synaptic Contact Localization In Three Dimensional Space Using A Center Distance Algorithm, Benjamin D. Ausdenmoore Jan 2011

Synaptic Contact Localization In Three Dimensional Space Using A Center Distance Algorithm, Benjamin D. Ausdenmoore

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Spatial distribution of synaptic inputs on the dendritic tree of a neuron can have significant influence on neuronal function. Consequently, accurate anatomical reconstructions of neuron morphology and synaptic localization are critical when modeling and predicting physiological responses of individual neurons. Historically, generation of three-dimensional (3D) neuronal reconstructions together with comprehensive mapping of synaptic inputs has been an extensive task requiring manual identification of putative synaptic contacts directly from tissue samples or digital images. Recent developments in neuronal tracing software applications have improved the speed and accuracy of 3D reconstructions, but localization of synaptic sites through the use of pre- and/or …
