A Retrospective Study To Evaluate The Efficacy Of Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole (Tmp/Smx) Compared To Daptomycin Or Linezolid For The Treatment Of Infections Due To Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (Mrsa), Aparna Lakshmi Murari

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Background: Staphylococcus aureus is still considered one of the most significant human pathogens in terms of morbidity, mortality, and costs. Vancomycin should be avoided if possible for the treatment of MRSA when the Minimum Inhibiting Concentration (MIC) to Vancomycin is 2μg/mL, as it poses a therapeutic challenge. Main therapeutic options include Daptomycin and Linezolid, two new, expensive drugs, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole(TMP/SMX), an old, inexpensive agent. Study aims were to compare the clinical efficacy and potential cost savings associated with TMP/SMX use.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted at Detroit Medical Center. For calendar year 2009, unique adult patients (>18 years) …

Abandoned Love: The Impact Of Wyatt V. Stickney On The Intersection Between International Human Rights And Domestic Mental Disability Law, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

Wyatt v. Stickney - the first case to find (40 years ago) a constitutional right to treatment for persons institutionalized because of mental disability - is the most important institutional rights case litigated in the history of domestic mental disability law. It spawned “copycat” litigation in multiple federal district courts and state superior courts, led directly to the creation of “Patients’ Bills of Rights” in most states, and inspired the creation of the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act, the Mental Health Systems Act Bill of Rights, and the federally-funded Protection and Advocacy System. Its direct influence on …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The effect of daily minimum dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration on the growth and yield of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus and channel catfish hybrids (female channel catfish × male blue catfish I. furcatus) sharing the Jubilee strain of channel catfish as the maternal parent was evaluated in a 234-d study in sixteen 0.1-ha earthen ponds (15,113 fish/ha). Ponds were managed to maintain a minimum DO concentration of 25% or 50% of saturation. The total consumption of 32%-protein feed at the high and low DO concentrations was 12,973 and 10,262 kg/ha, respectively, for channel catfish and 12,805 and 11,592 kg/ha, …

Development Of Phytoplankton Communities And Common Off-Flavors In A Biofloc Technology System Used For The Culture Of Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus), Kevin Schrader, Bartholomew W. Green, Peter Perschbacher

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The use of biofloc technology production systems continues to increase in the aquaculture industry worldwide. Recent research demonstrated that outdoor biofloc systems can be used to produce high yields of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). However, studies have not yet been performed to determine the development and composition of phytoplankton communities and related off-flavor problems in these biofloc production systems. In this study, water samples were collected biweekly from May to November and channel catfish samples were collected during harvest in November from nine 18.6 m2 biofloc culture tanks. Water and fillet samples were analyzed for levels of …

Conservation Easements At The Climate Change Crossroads, Jessica Owley Jan 2011

Conservation Easements At The Climate Change Crossroads, Jessica Owley

Journal Articles

The essence of a conservation easement as a static perpetual restriction is coming to a head with the understanding that the world is a changing place. This demonstration is nowhere more dramatic than in the context of global climate change. In response to this conflict, users of conservation easements face the decision of either (1) changing conservation easement agreements to fit the landscape or (2) changing the landscape to fit the conservation easements. Both of these options present benefits and challenges in implementation. Where conservation easement holders’ ultimate goal is to keep a maximum number of acres under protection from …

A Review Of Flavobacterium Psychrophilum Biology, Clinical Signs, And Bacterial Cold Water Disease Prevention And Treatment, Michael E. Barnes, Michael L. Brown

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Flavobacterium psychrophilum is a ubiquitous bacterium in the aquatic environment, particularly in freshwater [1]. As the etiological agent of bacterial coldwater disease, it is a serious fish pathogen causing substantial economic losses and rearing difficulties to both commercial and conservation aquaculture [2]. This review paper describes the epidemiology, clinical signs, prevention, and treatment of the fish diseases attributed to this pathogen, which are similar despite the different geographic labels. In addition, the basic biology of F. psychrophilum and the techniques required for successful bacterial culture, isolation, and identification are discussed.

If Not A Commercial Republic? Political Economy In The United States After Citizens United, David A. Westbrook Jan 2011

If Not A Commercial Republic? Political Economy In The United States After Citizens United, David A. Westbrook

Journal Articles

In

Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission , a majority of the Supreme Court conceived the United States to be an oligarchy and ruled accordingly. What this decision might come to mean for political economy in the United States is explored through three interrelated responses to the decision. In the first,

Citizens United is a turning point for constitutional law scholarship, and by extension, for what is expected from our legal system. After

Citizens United , legal scholars may abandon the idea that the Court takes legal argument seriously, and that law thereby constrains, as well as expresses, social privilege. …

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether adrenal betaarrestin 1 (betaarr1)-mediated aldosterone production plays any role in post-MI HF progression.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) represents one of the most significant health problems worldwide and new and innovative treatments are needed. Aldosterone contributes significantly to HF progression after myocardial infarction (MI) by accelerating adverse cardiac remodeling and ventricular dysfunction. It is produced by the adrenal cortex after angiotensin II (AngII) activation of AngII type 1 receptors (AT1Rs), G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that also signal independently of G proteins. G protein-independent signaling is mediated by betaarrestin (betaarr) -1 and -2. We recently reported that …

An Analysis Of The Implementation-Potential Of The Threaded Engram Database Model, Sourabh Mehta

Theses

The row-and-column orientation of the Relational Database Model is optimized for the storage of "data," but is not optimized for the storage of "information." This capstone project, researches the different human memory models, in-order to understand how memories are formed and how independent memories are linked together. The memory models explored include the Atkinson-Shiffrin memory model, Baddeley's model of working memory, and the Memory-Prediction model. The results of this investigation of human memory serve as a foundation for the design and implementation of a new database model, called the Threaded Engram Database (TED) model.

New Medium Of Advertising In The Future Use Of Interactive Installation, Hao Huang

Theses

Interactive installation is good at communicating as an advertising medium because in the age of information overload, the traditional advertising medium is far from communicating with consumers efficiently, "eye catching" is no longer enough, advertising calls for effective experience communicating. Bringing experience to consumers, involving them in the process of delivering information will be effective ways of communicating and a preferred way of getting information by today's information consumers. In my thesis I will study the use of interactive installation as an advertising medium, farther more, and how we can use interactive installation to communicate with consumers better than traditional …
