Contributions Made By Cdc25 Phosphatases To Proliferation Of Intestinal Epithelial Stem And Progenitor Cells, Gwanghee Lee, Sofia Origanti, Lynn S. White, Jinwu Sun, Thaddeus S. Stappenbeck, Helen Piwnica-Worms

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The CDC25 protein phosphatases drive cell cycle advancement by activating cyclin-dependent protein kinases (CDKs). Humans and mice encode three family members denoted CDC25A, -B and -C and genes encoding these family members can be disrupted individually with minimal phenotypic consequences in adult mice. However, adult mice globally deleted for all three phosphatases die within one week after Cdc25 disruption. A severe loss of absorptive villi due to a failure of crypt epithelial cells to proliferate was observed in the small intestines of these mice. Because the Cdc25s were globally deleted, the small intestinal phenotype and loss of animal viability could …

Food-Borne Ultimatum: Proposing Federal Legislation To Create Humane Living Conditions For Animals Raised For Food In Order To Improve Human Health, The, Lynn M. Boris

Journal of Law and Health

In order to reduce the large number of human health risks associated with reckless farming practices, Congress must enact federal legislation that requires humane living conditions for farm animals and declares a moratorium on the routine use of unnecessary antibiotics. Part II of this Note will briefly review traditional farming and animal husbandry practices and examine the shift to the modern practices used by producers of animal products today. Part II will also present several farming practices utilized today that are particularly dangerous to human health. Part III of this Note will explore the immense human suffering that is occurring …

The Sentence, The Novel, And Autobiography: The Histories Of Reading And Self In Bunyan And Rousseau, Samuel Rowe Jan 2011

The Sentence, The Novel, And Autobiography: The Histories Of Reading And Self In Bunyan And Rousseau, Samuel Rowe

Honors Papers

This study analyzes late-seventeenth and eighteenth-century autobiographies in order to address questions regarding the relationship between the history of reading and the "history of the self" in the West. More particularly, it examines the treatment of reading and textuality in John Bunyan's "Grace Abounding" and Jean-Jacques Rousseau's "Confessions" in order to suggest that the historical phenomenon Michel Foucault describes as the "emergence of Man" can be understood in terms of the rise of mass print culture and subsequent development of extensive reading practices during the eighteenth century.

Pavlovian Conditioning Between Cocaine Stimulant Effects And A Discrete Sensory Cue: Implementation Of An Alternating Conditioning Procedure, Jonathan Miller Wachtel Jan 2011

Pavlovian Conditioning Between Cocaine Stimulant Effects And A Discrete Sensory Cue: Implementation Of An Alternating Conditioning Procedure, Jonathan Miller Wachtel

Honors Papers

Cocaine addiction is associated with an extremely high rate of relapse, the resumption of drug taking behavior following a period of abstinence. Relapse may be induced by exposure to drug-associated cues, stress, or drug challenge. Rodent models of addiction investigate reinstatement, the resumption of drug-seeking behavior following a period of abstinence. This study investigated the necessary procedures for establishing Pavlovian conditioning between a discrete sensory cue and cocaine stimulant effects (15.0 mg/kg, IP). Successful conditioning was indicated by cue induced conditioned hyperactivity. In Experiment 1, a simple discrete visual cue failed to be attributed salience. Cocaine-treated rats showed heightened locomotor …

Disease, Medicine And Health, Diego Armus, A. López Denis

History Faculty Works

This article focuses on three overlapping trends in the historical study of human responses to illness, labeled as “new history of medicine, history of public health, and sociocultural history of disease.” The topics range from colonial epidemiology and pharmacopoeia to twentieth-century public health institutions and urban hygiene. But a consistent focus on the social, cultural, and symbolic components of diseases and cures unifies this historiography and distinguishes it from the narrower scope of the long-established field of the history of medicine.

The Upside To Down Syndrome: An Educational Manual For Parents, Brittany Larson, Seth Luoma Jan 2011

The Upside To Down Syndrome: An Educational Manual For Parents, Brittany Larson, Seth Luoma

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Parents of children with Down syndrome want their child to be as successful as other children in areas of development, specifically play. Play is crucial to a child's development as it assists with the progression through childhood developmental stages. This can help lay a foundation for learning daily life skills such as dressing, feeding, and social interaction. For children with Down syndrome, performing daily living tasks may be more difficult as fine and gross motor skills are affected by low-tone, cognition level, and coordination. Providing children with a variety of play activities to build both fine and gross motor skills …

Encontrando La Comida Saludable: Identifying Food Access Barriers For The Adams County, Pennsylvania Latino Community, Gwendolyn D. Brown, Olivia A. Haddad

Student Publications

Overwhelming research indicates that recent national trends in U.S. food systems have led to the increased prevalence of processed foods and associated diet-related diseases. The effects of unhealthy diets have been distributed unevenly across the country’s socioeconomic and ethnic groups. Certain socioeconomic and ethnic groups face greater geographic, financial and cultural barriers to healthy food access. In Adams County, Pennsylvania, Latinos comprise 5.6% of the population, making them the county’s largest minority group, yet little is known about the food access barriers they face. In this study, we used a combination of surveys and focus groups with Latino residents and …

The Maze, Maria Elvira Vera Tata Jan 2011

The Maze, Maria Elvira Vera Tata

HIM 1990-2015

Many cities in Latin American countries are surrounded by slums. The inhabitants of the slums are often victims of corruption, famine and murder. The victims include everyone and especially affect the most vulnerable, women and children. They are the voiceless whose stories are lost and never told. Children who lack adult support have to pull from their inner strength to rise from hostile environments, nevertheless their lives are lived with ardor and immediacy, a way of life that is built within a culturally-layered community. It is in those layers that not only pain but marvels can be found. My creative …

Formality, Bryce Emley

HIM 1990-2015

Of the many aspects of the composition of poetry, the most common component of the form involves emotional response. There is an infinite number of ways to write a poem, and likewise an infinite number of forms which a poem can be structured according to. In writing this collection of poems composing my thesis, I set out to write poetry in as many ways as I could to explore how different forms, devices, voices, points of view, sounds, tones, and as many other variables as I could think of affect poetry as stimulus. The poems in this collection cover a …

Don't See, Don't Speak A Collection Of Short Stories, Jaroslav Kalfar Jan 2011

Don't See, Don't Speak A Collection Of Short Stories, Jaroslav Kalfar

HIM 1990-2015

This short story collection follows diverse characters as they long to find their place in the chaos of modern world. As the trend of postmodern literature traces our failure to understand our lives and discover a larger context, we find that our reality is ever-changing and there is not a single constant to follow. We are disappointed by modern political systems, our lovers, and our own individual capabilities. The issue of belonging means finding a place that, both physically and mentally, provides context and meaning for our existence. The five short stories presented here examine social issues, such as immigration, …

Man Vs Beast The Human-Animal Boundary In J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Series, Jessica Auz Jan 2011

Man Vs Beast The Human-Animal Boundary In J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Series, Jessica Auz

HIM 1990-2015

In her series of seven novels, Rowling constructs a society and a framework of characterization that allows her to explore the human-animal boundary in a variety of ways. She connects her novels to the ideology of the classical and medieval periods while still acknowledging the ways that the relationship between humans and animals has changed over the years by showcasing the influence of modern popular culture on her characterization of the human-animal boundary. Through her descriptions of werewolves, Patronuses, Animagi, and Harry Potter's and Lord Voldemort's abilities to speak Parseltongue, Rowling uses classical, medieval, and modern animal symbolism to showcase …

A 1-D Mechanistic Model For The Evolution Of Earthflow-Prone Hillslopes, Adam M. Booth, Joshua J. Roering Jan 2011

A 1-D Mechanistic Model For The Evolution Of Earthflow-Prone Hillslopes, Adam M. Booth, Joshua J. Roering

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

In mountainous terrain, deep‐seated landslides transport large volumes of material on hillslopes, exerting a dominant control on erosion rates and landscape form. Here, we develop a mathematical landscape evolution model to explore interactions between deep‐seated earthflows, soil creep, and gully processes at the drainage basin scale over geomorphically relevant (>103 year) timescales. In the model, sediment flux or incision laws for these three geomorphic processes combine to determine the morphology of actively uplifting and eroding steady state topographic profiles. We apply the model to three sites, one in the Gabilan Mesa, California, with no earthflow activity, and two …

Intelligent Software For Ecological Building Design, Jens G. Pohl, Hisham Assal, Kym Jason Pohl

Architecture

Building design is a complex process because of the number of elements and issues involved and the number of relationships that exist among them. Adding sustainability issues to the list increases the complexity of design by an order of magnitude. There is a need for computer assistance to manage the increased complexity of design and to provide intelligent collaboration in formulating acceptable design solutions. Software development technology today offers opportunities to design and build an intelligent software system environment that can serve as a reliable intelligent partner to the human designer. In this paper the authors discuss the requirements for …
