Chinese Influence On Western Women's Dress In American Vogue Magazine, 1960-2009, Yao Zeng

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Chinese culture has dramatically influenced Western women’s fashionable dress over many centuries. Researchers have studied Chinese dress and its influence on Western women’s dress in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth century. However, no research has systematically examined Chinese dress influences on Western women’s dress from the time that China reopened its door to the West in the 1970s and into the twenty-first century. The purpose of this study is to trace Chinese influence in Western women’s dress from 1960 to 2009 in American Vogue magazine. The specific aims of this study are to identify and record the influence of …

Relationships Among The Behavioral Inhibition System, Response Inhibition, Heart Rate Variability, And Anxiety Sensitivity Between Older Adolescents With And Without Significant Anxiety, Erin Tarcza Reuther

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Differences in the Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS; Gray, 1982), response inhibition, and cardiac vagal control are evident between individuals with anxiety and nonclinical control participants. In this study, the role of inhibition in anxiety was examined, as well as relationships between the primary indexes of inhibition including the behavioral inhibition system (BIS), response inhibition, and cardiac vagal tone (or heart rate variability) at rest and during tasks of response inhibition. Additionally, anxiety sensitivity, an established risk factor for developing anxiety disorders, was examined and how it relates to indexes of inhibition. As expected, inhibition and anxiety sensitivity were found to …

An Assessment Of Atmospheric Factors Impacting Tropospheric Ozone In The Baton Rouge, Louisiana Non-Attainment Zone, Andrew Douglas Augustine Jan 2011

An Assessment Of Atmospheric Factors Impacting Tropospheric Ozone In The Baton Rouge, Louisiana Non-Attainment Zone, Andrew Douglas Augustine

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is one of the metropolitan areas in the United States that currently does not meet the national ambient air quality standard for tropospheric ozone. In addition to petrochemical and other industrial activities, the climatological characteristics of the area meaningfully impact the development of tropospheric ozone. This research study attempts to assess factors contributing to elevated concentrations of tropospheric ozone.

Hourly observations of surface ozone concentrations were analyzed for eleven ambient air quality stations in the Baton Rouge metropolitan nonattainment zone (BRNAZ). Data covering a 15-year period, January 1993 – Dec 2007, was characterized according to varying temporal …

Optimization Of Adult Multipotent Stromal Cell-Bioscaffold Interactions For Tissue Regeneration With Bioreactors, Lin Xie Jan 2011

Optimization Of Adult Multipotent Stromal Cell-Bioscaffold Interactions For Tissue Regeneration With Bioreactors, Lin Xie

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Adult multipotent stromal cells (MSCs) in combination with biocompatible scaffolds may augment well-established medical and surgical techniques. Pre-implantation cell loading and viability on scaffold carriers followed by in vitro differentiation and extracellular matrix (ECM) formation contribute to the efficacy of in vivo tissue formation. Given the specificity of the parameters for each cell-scaffold construct, it is vital to assess the relative potential of various combinations to select the best option for various clinical needs. High demand for equine and human bone regeneration especially non-union fracture repair is still largely unaddressed. Therefore osteogenesis potential of both equine and human MSCs engrafted …

Hospice Organizations On The Social Media Scene: Benchmarking The Uses And Strategies Of Hospice Organizations On The Internet In 2011, Emily Tiller Jan 2011

Hospice Organizations On The Social Media Scene: Benchmarking The Uses And Strategies Of Hospice Organizations On The Internet In 2011, Emily Tiller

LSU Master's Theses

As baby boomers age and the hospice industry grows to meet the demands for care, it is important that these organizations reach their consumers in sensitive and responsible ways. Building caring and mutually beneficial relationships with these consumers is important. Social media can give these organizations the platforms to build and maintain these relationships, but most of the hospice organizations in this qualitative study did not make good use of the opportunities online to relate to their publics. Using public relationships and relationship management measurements, this study monitored the online activity of seven hospice organizations. In general, these organizations under …

Assessing Attentional Bias And Cerebral Laterality In Specific Phobia Using A Dichotic Listening Paradigm, Whitney Shay Jenkins Jan 2011

Assessing Attentional Bias And Cerebral Laterality In Specific Phobia Using A Dichotic Listening Paradigm, Whitney Shay Jenkins

LSU Master's Theses

Researchers have found fear to impact a variety of cognitive variables in individuals with specific phobia. Attentional bias is a cognitive variable that has received considerable attention in the specific phobia literature; however, the existing literature follows only one line of attentional bias—bias as encoded through images, words, or other content presented visually. This study aimed to expand on this area by assessing attention and cerebral laterality in individuals with specific phobia using a dichotic listening paradigm (i.e., via auditory means). Results indicated that participants with specific phobias do not significantly differ from controls in terms of the number of …

The Long Road Home: Alfred Andersch, Hans Werner Richter, And The German Search For Meaning In Catastrophe, Aaron Dennis Horton

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The primary subjects of this dissertation are the post-World War II German authors Alfred Andersch and Hans Werner Richter. Drawing from a mixture of the authors’ writings and previously-researched as well as new archival sources, this study will examine their roles as editors of the U.S. Army-sponsored POW newspaper Der Ruf, as founders of the postwar West German journal, also titled Der Ruf, and, most famously, as founding members of the influential postwar West German literary circle Group 47. Each of these developments led directly to the next, and this study will explore the various processes that linked them together. …

Arbovirus Phenotype Alters Transmission Potential, Rebecca C. Christofferson Jan 2011

Arbovirus Phenotype Alters Transmission Potential, Rebecca C. Christofferson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Extrinsic and environmental factors are known to affect the transmission of arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses), including variations in the arthropod vector populations. Differences among these factors have been associated with differential transmission and are sometimes used to control the spread of an arbovirus through a vertebrate population in an effort to prevent or disrupt an outbreak. However, diversity in intrinsic viral populations, such as genetic and phenotypic variability, is not often accounted for when considering alterations in transmission. Presented in this dissertation are four experimental studies that explore the contribution of viral intrinsic factors, especially phenotypic variability, to the transmission potential …

"The Bald Knobbers Of Southwest Missouri, 1885-1889: A Study Of Vigilante Justice In The Ozarks.", Matthew James Hernando

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Bald Knobbers of Southwest Missouri were a vigilante organization that originated in Taney County, Missouri, in 1885, before spreading to adjacent Christian and Douglas counties in ensuing years. They began as a group dedicated to protecting life and property, aiding law enforcement officials in the apprehension of criminals, opposing corruption in local government, and punishing those who violated the social and religious mores of their community. In some places, the vigilantes gained much political influence, occupied key offices, and became effectively the ruling faction in local politics. They made many enemies, however, with whom they had several violent, sometimes …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of the first study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of a mid-season avermectin pour-on to cattle for managing OP resistance in horn fly populations at the Rosepine Louisiana Agricultural Research Station. During an eight year study, ivermectin treatments were made three times (when the treatment threshold of less than five weeks of control was reached), and in the following years, the number of weeks of control increased to 9 to 10 weeks each time. The purpose of the second study was to test a two-year OP/one-year pyrethroid rotation strategy as a strategy for maintaining susceptibility …

Comparative Biogeography Of The Arid Lands Of Central Mexico, Jesus Abraham Fernandez Jan 2011

Comparative Biogeography Of The Arid Lands Of Central Mexico, Jesus Abraham Fernandez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Most biogeographic studies on the Mexican biota have assumed that the dramatic climate cycles of the Pleistocene epoch and the prominence of the Trans-Mexico Volcanic Belt have played major roles in the origin and diversification of species. Here the pylogenetics and biogeography of four codistributed rodent species were studied. In each case, a phylogenetic hypothesis for the taxon and allied species using two mitochondrial (Cytochrome-b and 12S), and two nuclear genes (GHR and IRBP) was generated, appropriate taxonomic changes were recommended, and a temporal framework was generated to identify events that may have produced the phylogenetic pattern. Nelson’s woodrat Neotoma …

Preparation And Studies Of Ratiometric Fluorescent Chemosensors Based On The Attenuation Of Excitation Energy Transfer, Jiba Raj Acharya Jan 2011

Preparation And Studies Of Ratiometric Fluorescent Chemosensors Based On The Attenuation Of Excitation Energy Transfer, Jiba Raj Acharya

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Molecular devices possessing pi-electron conjugated scaffold demonstrate unique capabilities as fluorescent chemosensors for the trace detection of analytes in a variety of environments. Important properties of these compounds such as charge transport and exciton migration, emission intensity etc. can be simply attenuated by external stimuli or analyte binding, leading to considerable changes in observable signals. The main goal of this Ph.D. dissertation was to study the possibility to control excitation energy migration in conjugated systems. Towards this goal, we designed surface-immobilized monodispersed oligo(p-phenylene ethynylene)s (OPEs) as a general basis for thin-film ratiometric fluorescent chemosensors. The sensor molecules have been functionalized …

Assessing Social Support In Children: Development And Initial Validation Of The Social Support Questionnaire For Children, Arlene Tayag Gordon Jan 2011

Assessing Social Support In Children: Development And Initial Validation Of The Social Support Questionnaire For Children, Arlene Tayag Gordon

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Research examining risk and protective factors associated with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in children has established social support as one of the strongest predictors of psychological health and overall adjustment post-traumatic event (Vigil & Geary, 2008). Greater perceived social support, generally, has been related to more positive outcomes in children (Borja & Callahan, 2008; Cryder, Kilmer, Tedeschi, & Calhoun, 2006; Pina, Villalta, Ortiz, Gottschall, Costa, & Weems, 2008). Understanding the impact of social support on coping with traumatic events such as natural disasters or exposure to community violence is limited by the lack of psychometrically sound measures. The current study …

Structural And Mechanistic Studies On The Interactions Between S-Adenosyl Methionine (Sam) And The Sam-I Riboswitch, Wei Huang Jan 2011

Structural And Mechanistic Studies On The Interactions Between S-Adenosyl Methionine (Sam) And The Sam-I Riboswitch, Wei Huang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The chemical and physical properties of RNAs create a diverse functional portfolio to influence the functional outcomes of genomes. One scheme is to recognize cognate small molecule metabolites and to adopt distinct conformations to adjust the gene expression. Segments of messenger RNAs (mRNAs) that adopt this scheme are called riboswitches. As potential targets for designing novel antibiotics and portable regulatory devices for synthetic biology, riboswitches have gained increasing attention. The key to understand the functionality encoded in a riboswitch sequence requires unveiling the mechanism of transmitting ligand recognition to gene expression. In this work, both computational and experimental techniques are …

Are There Ethical Implications Of Karma?, Thomas Pynn Jan 2011

Are There Ethical Implications Of Karma?, Thomas Pynn

Faculty Articles

Though Americans have been exposed to Asian philosophical traditions since the nineteenth century – with much recent help from the Beat writers of the 1950s and 1960s – too little attention has been paid to the texts and ideas of these traditions and to their implementation in daily life. This is especially true with regard to Buddhist ideas of ethics and karma. Compounding the problem is the commercial exploitation of Asian philosophical terms like Dharma, karma, tantra and reincarnation, which tends to impede deeper understanding of these important concepts. In America, ethics are once more on the lips of many …

The Declaration Of Independence And Immigration In The United States Of America, Kenneth M. White Jan 2011

The Declaration Of Independence And Immigration In The United States Of America, Kenneth M. White

Faculty Articles

The United States has always been a nation of immigrants, and immigration policy has always been controversial. The history of immigration in the United States is contrasted in this article with a normative standard of naturalization (immigration policy) based on the Declaration of Independence. The current immigration debate fits within a historical pattern that pits an unrestricted right of immigration (the left) against exclusive, provincial politics (the right). Both sides are simultaneously correct and incorrect. A moderate policy on immigration is possible if the debate in the United States gets an infusion of what Thomas Paine called "common sense."

Characterization Of Spiroplasma Mirum And Its Role In Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies, Hilari Maree French Jan 2011

Characterization Of Spiroplasma Mirum And Its Role In Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies, Hilari Maree French

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

There are many contradictory reports in the literature involving the culture of Spiroplasma mirum, its resistance to disinfectants and antibiotics, and its potential role in Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs). These contradictions led to an interest in a possible link between spiroplasma and TSEs and the development of a research plan to elucidate this connection. It was hypothesized that Spiroplasma was associated with a neurodegenerative disease such as TSE. In this work we further characterized S. mirum laboratory strains and continued to evaluate the possible correlations they have with TSE infections and the prion. To optimize recovery of S. mirum from …

Impulse-Momentum Diagrams, David Rosengrant Jan 2011

Impulse-Momentum Diagrams, David Rosengrant

Faculty Articles

Multiple representations are a valuable tool to help students learn and understand physics concepts. Furthermore, representations help students learn how to think and act like real scientists. These representations include: pictures, free‐body diagrams, energy bar charts, electrical circuits, and, more recently, computer simulations and animations. However, instructors have limited choices when they want to help their students understand impulse and momentum. One of the only available options is the impulse‐momentum bar chart. The bar charts can effectively show the magnitude of the momentum as well as help students understand conservation of momentum, but they do not easily show the actual …

Purification Of Fish Oils And Production Of Protein Powders With Epa And Dha Enriched Fish Oils, Huaixia Yin Jan 2011

Purification Of Fish Oils And Production Of Protein Powders With Epa And Dha Enriched Fish Oils, Huaixia Yin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) in marine oils are known to provide health benefits. However, marine oils are accompanied by saturated fatty acids. By enriching fish oils with EPA and DHA the beneficial effect of fish oils can be increased while limiting the detrimental effect of the saturated fatty acids. Fish oils need to be purified before consumption. A number of methods have been used for extracting and purifying EPA and DHA enriched fish oils; however, thermal degradation and oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) often occurs as a result of exposure to high temperatures, solvents and adverse conditions during …

Characterization Of Basigin And The Interaction Between Embigin And Monocarboxylate Transporter-1, -2, And -4 (Mct1, Mct2, Mct4) In The Mouse Brain, L Nicole Little Jan 2011

Characterization Of Basigin And The Interaction Between Embigin And Monocarboxylate Transporter-1, -2, And -4 (Mct1, Mct2, Mct4) In The Mouse Brain, L Nicole Little

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Basigin and Embigin are members of the immunoglobulin superfamily that function as cell adhesion molecules. Studies of Basigin null mice revealed reproductive sterility, increased pain sensitivity, and blindness. It is thought that the mechanism causing blindness involves misexpression of monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1) in the absence of Basigin. It is known that the transmembrane domain of Basigin interacts with MCT1. In the absence of Basigin, MCT1 does not localize to the plasma membrane of expressing cells and photoreceptor function is disrupted. Studies of the Basigin null mouse brain suggest that MCT1 is properly expressed, which suggests a separate mechanism causes …

Mesmerized, Katherine Knoeringer Jan 2011

Mesmerized, Katherine Knoeringer

LSU Master's Theses

This body of work is about looking and contemplating. Intense concentration requires solitude, which is why the figures that appear in the work are either literally isolated or seem detached from others around them. Sometimes the events the figures witness are ordinary, but more often their environments have mysterious or whimsical qualities. The whimsy comes from two places; fictional literature and childhood fantasies. Reading connects me to things and ideas outside of myself and allows the work to vacillate between the reality of normal daily observation and the mental escape of daydreaming. I want to make a place where everything …

Marketing Forest-Based Ecotourism In Sri Lanka: Predicting The Ecotourism Behavior And Defining The Market Segment Through A Behavioral Approach, Polwattage K. Perera Jan 2011

Introduction And Establishment Of Cyrtobagous Salviniae Calder And Sands (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) For The Control Of Salvinia Minima Baker (Salviniaceae), And Interspecies Interactions Possibly Limiting Successful Control In Louisiana, Katherine A. Parys

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Common salvinia, Salvinia minima Baker, is a floating aquatic invasive macrophyte that obstructs waterways and causes problems in wetlands across Louisiana and Texas. The salvinia weevil, Cyrtobagous salviniae Calder and Sands, has been released in over 14 countries around the world for the biological control of Salvinia spp. We successfully monitored the introduction and establishment of C. salviniae on S. minima in southern Louisiana between 2006 and 2010. Cyrtobagous salviniae significantly lowered the biomass of S. minima and increased the number of terminal buds damaged but had no significant impact on pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, surface temperature, percent of surface …

Anolis Chrysolepis Duméril And Bibron, 1837 (Squamata: Iguanidae), Revisited: Molecular Phylogeny And Taxonomy Of The Anolis Chrysolepis Species Group, Annelise B. D'Angiolella, Tony Gamble, Teresa C. S. Avila-Pires, Guarino R. Colli, Brice P. Noonan, Laurie J. Vitt

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The Anolis chrysolepis species group is distributed across the entire Amazon basin and currently consists of A. bombiceps and five subspecies of A. chrysolepis. These lizards are characterized by moderate size, relatively narrow digital pads, and a small dewlap that does not reach the axilla. We used the mitochondrial gene ND2 to estimate phylogenetic relationships among putative subspecies of A. chrysolepis and taxa previously hypothesized to be their close relatives. We also assessed the congruence between molecular and morphological datasets to evaluate the taxonomic status of group members. On the basis of the two datasets, we present a new …

Effects Of 3-Trifluoromethyl-4-Nitrophenol (Tfm) On Energy Stores And Gill Function In Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon Marinus) And Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Matthew Henry Jan 2011

Effects Of 3-Trifluoromethyl-4-Nitrophenol (Tfm) On Energy Stores And Gill Function In Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon Marinus) And Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Matthew Henry

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The primary method of controlling invasive sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) populations in the Great Lakes is the application of the pesticide 3-trifluoromethyl-4-nitrophenol (TFM) to larval lamprey nursery streams. Recent evidence suggests that the mode of toxic action of TFM involves the inhibition of oxidative ATP production in the mitochondria. As a result, there is increased reliance on the anaerobic pathways of ATP production which involves the hydrolysis of phosphocreatine (PCr) and anaerobic glycolysis. TFM may also damage the gills, which may disrupt gill-mediated ion regulation and cause internal ion imbalances. While knowledge of TFM toxicity in larval lampreys …

You Can’T Go To Zion With A Carnal Mind: Slackness And Culture In The Music Of Yellowman, Brent Hagerman Jan 2011

You Can’T Go To Zion With A Carnal Mind: Slackness And Culture In The Music Of Yellowman, Brent Hagerman

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Jamaican deejay Yellowman is best known for “slackness” lyrics centred on masculine heterosexual potency, sexist objectification of women and graphic sexual narratives. Yet a deeper look at Yellowman’s life and recorded output suggests that when his slackness is read in the context of Afro-Jamaican culture, reggae history and his Rastafarian faith, a more complex interpretation of his slackness is needed. This study will draw on Carolyn Cooper’s (2001) theory that slackness is a “metaphorical revolt against law and order, an undermining of consensual standards of decency” (p. 141). Whereas the term “culture” is used in reggae to depict music that …
