Parathyroid Hormone-Related Protein Is Not Required For Normal Ductal Or Alveolar Development In The Post-Natal Mammary Gland, Kata Boras-Granic, Joshua Vanhouten, Minoti Hiremath, John Wysolmerski

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

PTHrP is necessary for the formation of the embryonic mammary gland and, in its absence, the embryonic mammary bud fails to form the neonatal duct system. In addition, PTHrP is produced by the breast during lactation and contributes to the regulation of maternal calcium homeostasis during milk production. In this study, we examined the role of PTHrP during post-natal mammary development. Using a PTHrP-lacZ transgenic mouse, we surveyed the expression of PTHrP in the developing post-natal mouse mammary gland. We found that PTHrP expression is restricted to the basal cells of the gland during pubertal development and becomes expressed in …

Computational Modeling And Simulation Study Of Dermal Wound Healing Proliferative Phase, Le Yang Nov 2011

Computational Modeling And Simulation Study Of Dermal Wound Healing Proliferative Phase, Le Yang

Theses and Dissertations

Dermal wound healing proliferative phase is a complicated physiological process in which many growth factors, cell types and matrix components participate. The process must be well coordinated to restore the structural and functional integrity of tissue injured. Many disorders interrupting healing process result in abnormal healing such as chronic wounds or excessive scarring. Mathematical modeling has been used to investigate many aspects of wound healing. Angiogenesis is pertinent for dermal wound healing since the cellular activities involved in tissue repair requires oxygen and nutrients to be delivered to the wound site. By using a hybrid agent-based model, we investigated the …

My Artistic Journey, Ninnette Santarone Nov 2011

My Artistic Journey, Ninnette Santarone

Theses and Dissertations

My artwork is focused on mixed media and printmaking. Through these media I address current world events, such as global warming and recycling. I also make works that deal with personal emotions. In making my work I use charcoal pencil, paint, newspaper, found stamping materials, and old books. I overlap these materials and blend them together to create an overall cohesive appearance. I present generalized objects that may not appear to be completely finished. This appearance serves as an analogy of the instability of our world’s environment and my personal life.

Seeking A Clearer Picture: Assessing The Appropriate Regulatory Framework For Broadband Video Distribution , Adam B. Vanwagner

Fordham Law Review

This Note examines the appropriate regulatory framework for the distribution of commercial video content over broadband networks. As online video providers such as Netflix and Hulu expand, they are beginning to compete directly with the video services of major cable and telecommunications companies. Frequently, these companies also serve as a customer’s Internet service provider, leaving them in the position of carrying these competitive services over their broadband networks. This conflict has led to calls for regulation that would protect nascent online video services from feared anticompetitive actions by the major providers. In April 2010, against the backdrop of this expanding …

Computers As Castles: Preventing The Plain View Doctrine From Becoming A Vehicle For Overbroad Digital Searches , James Saylor Nov 2011

Computers As Castles: Preventing The Plain View Doctrine From Becoming A Vehicle For Overbroad Digital Searches , James Saylor

Fordham Law Review

The plain view doctrine is based on the practical logic that an officer need not turn a blind eye to evidence that is immediately apparent as incriminating when he is lawfully present, where the object can be seen, and where he has a legal right to access that object. However, in the context of digital searches, this basic logic is stretched to a point that directly conflicts with the original purposes of the Fourth Amendment. The immense amount of data present on computers makes these searches much more intrusive. Officers employ search methods and techniques to access files that involve …

The Twombly Standard And Affirmative Defenses: What Is Good For The Goose Is Not Always Good For The Gander , Anthony Gambol Nov 2011

The Twombly Standard And Affirmative Defenses: What Is Good For The Goose Is Not Always Good For The Gander , Anthony Gambol

Fordham Law Review

The United States district courts disagree as to whether the plausibility pleading standard for claims first described by the United States Supreme Court in Bell Atlantic Corp. v. Twombly also extends to affirmative defenses pled by defendants in federal courts. The divergent opinions result from conflicting interpretations of the language of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, standards of preferred practice, and notions of fairness. This Note examines the district courts’ arguments in deciding whether the Twombly standard extends to affirmative defenses. It identifies the quiddities of the courts’ reasoning through an analysis of their decisions and, based upon this …

Arbitration Provisions: Little Darlings And Little Monsters , Stephen Friedman Nov 2011

Arbitration Provisions: Little Darlings And Little Monsters , Stephen Friedman

Fordham Law Review

This Article takes a new approach to resolving the growing tension between the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA) and the unconscionability doctrine. While arbitration provisions are favored under the FAA, they are viewed far more skeptically by courts applying unconscionability to refuse enforcement of one-sided arbitration provisions. This tension, which has increased dramatically in recent years, represents a major fault line in contract law. Jurisprudence and commentary on this issue have assumed that courts have the authority to apply the unconscionability doctrine to arbitration provisions. This Article refutes that assumption, taking the position that Congress, in passing the FAA, removed from …

Keeping Up With Officer Jones: A Comprehensive Look At The Fourth Amendment And Gps Surveillance , Kaitlyn A. Kerrane Nov 2011

Keeping Up With Officer Jones: A Comprehensive Look At The Fourth Amendment And Gps Surveillance , Kaitlyn A. Kerrane

Fordham Law Review

Each day, individuals use technological devices to make their lives easier. One such device is the Global Positioning System (GPS), which has increasingly gained popularity in recent years. Police use of GPS in robbery, drug, murder and other investigations has also increased. Several high profile cases have brought the law enforcement uses of GPS into the public eye and elicited a public response. Warrantless installation and monitoring of these devices for up to months at a time have been challenged as unreasonable Fourth Amendment searches. The U.S. Supreme Court has not decided on the constitutional issues raised by police GPS …

Occupational Chemical Exposures And Psychiatric Disorders, Mark L. Dembert, M.D., M.P.H. Nov 2011

Occupational Chemical Exposures And Psychiatric Disorders, Mark L. Dembert, M.D., M.P.H.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Occupational exposure to metals, solvents, or pesticides can produce disorders of behavior, thought, or mood which can easily be misdiagnosed as 'Junctional." Accurate diagnosis obtained with a relevant clinical history, psychiatric interview, physical examination, and indicated laboratory tests will enable the delivery of necessary medical treatment and concurrently prevent repeat exposure to a hazardous work environment. Published references and organizational sources in occupational medicine and industrial hygiene can beutilized by psychiatrists for determination of the dijferential diagnosis and confirmation of an occupational exposure; in addition, these references can aid in assessing the need for an environmental health hazard survey at …

A Survey Of Selected Neurological Signs In Schizophrenia Research, Emanuel H. Rosen, M.D. Nov 2011

A Survey Of Selected Neurological Signs In Schizophrenia Research, Emanuel H. Rosen, M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

This review covers three areas of schizophrenia research not usually addressed in residents' curricula: smooth pursuit eye movements and genetics, orienting responses, and tardive dyskinesia. The significance of these neurological signs is explored in terms of their clinical symptom associations and their heuristic value. Neuroanatomical aspects of these signs is noted to be speculatively consistent with hypofrontality and negative symptoms in schieophrenia. The author describes the nature of occulomotor abnormalities and discusses an applicable research study. He summarizes relevant areas of genetic research including linkage analysis and marker studies and explains some of the orienting response abnormalities in schizophrenia. He …

Reactive Oxygen Species Modulation Of Na/K-Atpase Regulates Fibrosis And Renal Proximal Tubular Sodium Handling, Jiang Liu, David J. Kennedy, Yanling Yan, Joseph I. Shapiro Md Nov 2011

Reactive Oxygen Species Modulation Of Na/K-Atpase Regulates Fibrosis And Renal Proximal Tubular Sodium Handling, Jiang Liu, David J. Kennedy, Yanling Yan, Joseph I. Shapiro Md

Pharmaceutical Science and Research

The Na/K-ATPase is the primary force regulating renal sodium handling and plays a key role in both ion homeostasis and blood pressure regulation. Recently, cardiotonic steroids (CTS)-mediated Na/K-ATPase signaling has been shown to regulate fibrosis, renal proximal tubule (RPT) sodium reabsorption, and experimental Dahl salt-sensitive hypertension in response to a high-salt diet. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are an important modulator of nephron ion transport. As there is limited knowledge regarding the role of ROS-mediated fibrosis and RPT sodium reabsorption through the Na/K-ATPase, the focus of this review is to examine the possible role of ROS in the regulation of Na/K-ATPase …

Nanoparticulate Formulations Of Mithramycin Analogs For Enhanced Cytotoxicity, Daniel Scott, Jürgen Rohr, Younsoo Bae Nov 2011

Nanoparticulate Formulations Of Mithramycin Analogs For Enhanced Cytotoxicity, Daniel Scott, Jürgen Rohr, Younsoo Bae

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Mithramycin (MTM), a natural product of soil bacteria from the Streptomyces genus, displays potent anticancer activity but has been limited clinically by severe side effects and toxicities. Engineering of the MTM biosynthetic pathway has produced the 3-side-chain-modified analogs MTM SK (SK) and MTM SDK (SDK), which have exhibited increased anticancer activity and improved therapeutic index. However, these analogs still suffer from low bioavailability, short plasma retention time, and low tumor accumulation. In an effort to aid with these shortcomings, two nanoparticulate formulations, poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(aspartate hydrazide) self-assembled and cross-linked micelles, were investigated with regard to the ability to load and pH …
