The available data on the activity of paraoxonase-1 (PON1) in patients suffering from migraine without aura (MWoA) is scarce. The present study was conducted to fulfill the objective of investigating the probability of an association between PON1 phenotype distribution and headache duration in patients suffering from MWoA. Materials and methods: Seventy-six patients who suffer from MWoA and were not experiencing attacks at the time and 65 healthy volunteers were enrolled for the purpose of evaluation in the present study. Results: The levels of serum paraoxonase, arylesterase activities, and lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH) were determined for these subjects. The results obtained revealed …

To compare the effects of 2 different anesthetic techniques used for oocyte retrieval. Comparison was made based on the number of retrieved and fertilized oocytes, metaphase 2 (M2, mature) oocytes, and transferred embryos, as well as fertilization, pregnancy, and live birth rates. Ultrasound-guided transvaginal oocyte retrieval for in vitro fertilization is one of the most common minor surgical procedures. Despite this, it is stressful and painful for the patient; most patients request sedation and/or pain relief. Propofol, which is frequently used for general anesthesia in such procedures, has been suspected to damage oocytes. Materials and methods: Results from 70 patients …

Geomechanical Stability Analysis For Co2 Sequestration In Carbonate Formation, Xue J. Zhou Jan 2011

Geomechanical Stability Analysis For Co2 Sequestration In Carbonate Formation, Xue J. Zhou

Theses and Dissertations

Geomechanical analysis is one of the fundamental pillars to build up the confidence of geological sequestration of CO2. Large scale CO2 sequestration in deep carbonate formation is a complicated geological process, which will non-reversibly transform the presumed equivalent and stable status of a sedimentary basin that formed over millions of years: chemically, hydraulically, geothermally, and geomechanically. In this dissertation, thermoporoelasticity guides the theoretical establishment of a conservative baseline for the geomechanical stability analysis of CO2 sequestration.

Extensive laboratory tests, including CO2 flooding tests, permeability tests, uniaxial and triaxial tests, Brazilian tensile strength tests, poroelasticity tests, point load tests, and fracture …

Quantitative Trait Loci (Qtl) Analysis For Antioxidant And Agronomically Important Traits In Tomato (Lycopersicon Esculentum), Bi̇lal Ökmen, Hasan Özgür Şiğva, Nergi̇z Gürbüz, Mehmet Ülger, Anne Frary, Sami̇ Doğanlar

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Tomato is one of the most widely produced and consumed vegetable crops worldwide. Plant breeders have usually focused on improvement of horticulturally important traits such as yield, fruit size, shape and colour. With increased attention on human health, however, plant breeders also consider the improvement of health-related traits of fruits and vegetables such as antioxidant characters. In the present study, genes controlling both health-related and horticulturally important traits were mapped in the tomato genome using 152 Lycopersicon hirsutum BC_2F_2 individuals. For this aim, all plants were phenotypically and genotypically characterised and a total of 75 QTLs were identified for all …

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common neurodegenerative disorder, is a growing public health problem and still lacks effective treatments. Recent evidence suggests that microtubule-associated protein tau may mediate amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) toxicity by modulating the tyrosine kinase Fyn.Weshowed previously that tau reduction prevents, and Fyn overexpression exacerbates, cognitive deficits in human amyloid precursor protein (hAPP) transgenic mice overexpressing Aβ. However, the mechanisms by which Aβ, tau, and Fyn cooperate in AD-related pathogenesis remain to be fully elucidated. Here we examined the synaptic and network effects of this pathogenic triad. Tau reduction prevented cognitive decline induced by synergistic effects of Aβ …

Development's Victim Or Its Beneficiary?: The Impact Of Oil And Gas Development On The Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, Raymond Cross

Faculty Law Review Articles

This article assesses whether oil and gas development on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, given the critical geographic, legal, and socio-cultural differences which set it apart from the rest of North Dakota, will bring with it potentially devastating and unmanageable impacts that may overwhelm the tribal people of that reservation. The article seeks to fill an analytic gap in the existing oil and gas scholarship that has not, in the author's estimation, given sufficient regard to development's unique rights and impacts in Indian Country.

Changing Hearts: The Future Of The Environmental Movement, Emily Casey Jan 2011

Changing Hearts: The Future Of The Environmental Movement, Emily Casey

Global Tides

For many, the environmental movement is a consumer fad with very little intellectual or emotional investment. Generally, sustainability is deemed a “good thing” but given low priority at both the personal level and the public policy level. In this paper, I argue that environmentalism must be modified to meet the needs of the general populace in order to gain momentum as a contemporary political movement. In other words, I examine how the environmental movement can attract the massive number of active members necessary to change public policy and conclude that this movement will need to adapt to the public in …

The Effect Of Morphine On Dopamine Neuron Activation In Males And Cycling Females, Micah Eimerbrink

Psychology Theses - Archive

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of estrogen on the electrophysiological response of ventral tegmental area (VTA) dopamine (DA) neurons to morphine (10 mg/kg; IP) in experimentally naïve adult male and intact adult female cycling Sprague-Dawley rats. Five groups were studied: males, proestrus females, estrus females, metestrus females, and diestrus females. Continuous 40 minute recordings were collected for each animal (5 minutes baseline, 5 minutes after a saline (0.9% NaCl) injection, and 30 minutes after morphing injection (10 mg/kg)). Results showed significant increases in VTA DA activity in the Metestrus and Male groups, no significant differences …

Borrowing The Bible, Echoing The Qur'an : The Significance Of Scriptural Acumen And Exegesis When Studying The Scarlet Letter And Moby-Dick, Mary Keough

Honors Capstones

Despite their widespread socio-religious influence and prominent endurance over time, the Bible and the Qur’an lack academic precedence in required literary coursework today. As prototypes for future literary works across cultures and historical epochs, the scriptures’ absence in mainstream collegiate study is especially disappointing. This essay, therefore, examines two classic American novels—Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and Herman Melville’s Moby Dick—through a scriptural lens, highlighting their similitude in character types, structure, style, and thematic content. Connecting significant narrative moments and stylistic nuances to biblical and Qur’anic text, this study exposes the importance of scriptural acumen to a deeper and more …
