Cuba For Cubans? Contradictions In Cuban Development Since 1990, Martin Carriel
Cuba For Cubans? Contradictions In Cuban Development Since 1990, Martin Carriel
Honors Projects
Not long ago, eighty-five percent of Cuban trade was conducted through the the Soviet Union's Council of Mutual Economic Assistance and the US maintained a strict economic embargo. Today, most Cuban trade is conducted with countries as diverse as Venezuela, China, and Canada, and despite the economic embargo, the US is the largest source of food for Cuba. The fall of the USSR in the early 90s forced Cuba into restructuring its trade, with widespread repercussions throughout Cuban economic, political and social systems and the ideology behind them. World-systems theory offers a theoretical framework that allows an understanding of the …

蛙崇拜 : 以二元對立論探討原始人生死觀, Ka Yee Ngai, Kit Man Poon
2010-2011

Reflecting On The Language Of Death, Deborah S. Gordon
Reflecting On The Language Of Death, Deborah S. Gordon
Seattle University Law Review
For centuries, wills scholars have lamented the difficulty of discerning intent from testamentary documents but have failed to examine how these documents might be written differently. A will can reflect and reinforce the decedent’s relationships with friends and family, can express support for institutions and causes in which the decedent believes, and can establish the decedent’s lasting legacy. And even if the will is simple and mundane, dealing only with the decedent’s personal possessions or naming her fiduciaries, its terminal nature imbues the will with talismanic power. Often the final significant written communication by its author, a will has the …

Faunal Analysis Of The Early Modern Bishop's Farm At Skalholt, Arnessysla Iceland, George Hambrecht
Faunal Analysis Of The Early Modern Bishop's Farm At Skalholt, Arnessysla Iceland, George Hambrecht
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation presents the analysis of faunal material recovered from middens outside the main complex of the Bishop of Southern Iceland's Cathedral farm at Skáholt, Arnessysla, Iceland. Issues of diet, deposition patterns, as well as participation in larger trade and intellectual networks addressed. All of these issues are examined in order to investigate larger issues centered around the early modern Atlantic world. The Skáholt material is also compared with the larger body of existing early modern Icelandic archaeofaunal data in order to investigate issues of adaptation and resilience in the face of harsh climatic as well as social and economic …
Moral Mental States: Four Methods In Metaethics, Christopher Alen Sula
Moral Mental States: Four Methods In Metaethics, Christopher Alen Sula
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Metaethics has traditionally focused on the meaning of moral statements, the referents of moral terms, and the justification of moral claims. This dissertation focuses on the thoughts in virtue of which our moral statements have their meaning and our moral claims have their content. These "moral mental states," as I call them, are best understood as having both intentional and volitional aspects and, corresponding to each aspect, as having satisfaction conditions involving both correctness and success in action. Put simply, our moral mental states are not only responsible for changing the world; they are responsible for changing the world in …
In Favor Of Teleosemantics: A Millikanian Treatment Of The Intentional Content Of Mental Representation, Pierre Faye
In Favor Of Teleosemantics: A Millikanian Treatment Of The Intentional Content Of Mental Representation, Pierre Faye
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Theoretical attempts to naturalize mental contents, that is, to explain how wholly physical organisms manage to represent the external world to themselves, are mostly conducted in accordance with causal-informational and/or functionalist approaches based on nomic physical correlations. In 1984, Ruth Millikan and David Papineau simultaneously, though independently, injected new life into the naturalist program by introducing a divergent approach known today as "teleosemantics."
In first approximation, teleosemantics purports to naturalize mental content by substituting for the former concept of nomic correlations found in causal and/or functionalist models, the biological concept of etiological functions resulting from natural selection. Since its introduction, …
Phosphorus Transport In The Bronx River: Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis, Jingyu Wang
Phosphorus Transport In The Bronx River: Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis, Jingyu Wang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Phosphorus (P) is the primary limiting nutrient for algal growth in freshwater systems. Excessive P from external inputs and release from sediments could accelerate primary productivity leading to eutrophication in the water column, and consequently degrading water quality. The objectives of this study were to predict P bioavailability and estimate spatial and temporal variations in P transport in the Bronx River, New York, USA. The Bronx River originates from the Westchester Davis Brook and Kensico Dam, flowing south through Westchester County (WC) and Bronx to the estuary area where it joins the East River. The total length is about 20 …
A Systematic Review Of The Literature On The Effects Of School Bullying From The Framework Of Jurgen Habermas’S Theory Of Communicative Action, Gabriel Cohen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This project is a systematic review of the US quantitative, empirical studies on the effects of school bullying for the purpose of determining the degree to which Jurgen Habermas’s social theory, the theory of communicative action, can be used to understand the constellation of measured effects. School bullying is defined as a systematic abuse of power: the empirical literature on school bullying, therefore, provides a large data set on the abuse of power. The review finds strong consistency between the theory and the results of selected studies suggesting that Habermas’s theory of communicative action can explain and predict the mechanisms …

Jurisprudential And Economic Justifications For Gene Sequence Patents, Matthew A. Poulsen
Jurisprudential And Economic Justifications For Gene Sequence Patents, Matthew A. Poulsen
Nebraska Law Review
This Article introduces the scientific background necessary to understand the practice of gene sequence patenting from a technical perspective. This Part will dispel a number of misconceptions related to the practice of gene sequence patenting, specifically what a gene patent represents and the limited bundle of exclusionary rights a gene sequence patent provides. This Part will also explain, from a technical perspective, the difference between non-patent eligible native DNA sequences and patent eligible man-made cDNA gene sequences. Part III introduces and attempts to synthesize the century-long products of nature doctrine, which supplies the standard for composition patent eligibility under section …

An Ethical Rabbit Hole: Model Rule 4.4, Intentional Interference With Former Employee Non-Disclosure Agreements And The Threat Of Disqualification, Part Ii, Maura I. Strassberg
Nebraska Law Review
Whether or not a lawyer can be found to have acted unethically in violation of Model Rule 4.4 initially depends upon whether the lawyer would be liable for intentional interference with the NDA between the former employee and their employer. In part, this is a matter of tort law, and in Part I of this Article, published separately at 89 NEB. L. REV. (forthcoming June 2011), I evaluated the possible application of this quite complex tort to a lawyer’s informal communication with such a former employee for the purpose of obtaining information relevant to proposed or pending litigation. What emerged …
The Vocal Behaviors Of North American River Otters (Lontra Canadensis) Individual Differences And Shared Repertoires, Carla Almonte
The Vocal Behaviors Of North American River Otters (Lontra Canadensis) Individual Differences And Shared Repertoires, Carla Almonte
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The current information on the vocal repertoire of the North American River Otter is very limited. To date there have been no direct studies conducted on their repertories. In this study, I examined the vocal behavior of 12 captive river otters. The discriminant function analysis suggests that river otters have 4 distinct call types with 7 sub-call types and one call the whistle is unique to one group of pups. The results of the Kruskal-Wallis comparing acoustical structures shows strong evidence for the presence of individuality with some individuals showing greater differences in comparison to the others. I also examined …

Determination And Pathogenicity Of The Bacterial Flora Associated With The Spruce Bark Beetle, Ips Typographus (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), Hacer Muratoğlu, Kazim Sezen, Zi̇hni̇ Demi̇rbağ
Turkish Journal of Biology
The Eurasian spruce bark beetle, Ips typographus (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), is one of the most serious pests of spruce trees. We identified 8 bacterial isolates from this pest using conventional bacteriological tests (API 20E and API 50CH strips, and VITEK system (bioMerieux) analysis) and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Based on these studies, all isolates could be identified to the genus or species level as Bacillus sphaericus (It1), Acinetobacter sp. (It2), Kluyvera cryocrescens (It3), Acinetobacter sp. (It4), Vagococcus sp. (It5), Acinetobacter sp. (It6), Proteus vulgaris (It7), and Serratia liquefaciens (It8). We also evaluated the pathogenicity of these bacteria on …
