Democratic Education Only For Some: Secondary Schooling In Northern Uganda, Philip Kelly, Stephen Odama Jan 2011

Democratic Education Only For Some: Secondary Schooling In Northern Uganda, Philip Kelly, Stephen Odama

Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article analyzes the effects of the political, social and cultural contexts of secondary education in northern Uganda. Specifically, the authors examine interactions between several factors with the schooling system, including

  • post-colonial curriculum,
  • centralized examination system,
  • several decades of war and instability,
  • poverty, and
  • intra-national and inter-tribal prejudice and discrimination.

Informing the analysis is the fact that Uganda is a democracy and thus has certain democratic responsibilities to its children and students. To explore these issues, the lenses of democratic theory and critical theory are employed.

"We Are Joined Together Temporarily" The Tragic Mulatto, Fusion Monster In Lee Frost's The Thing With Two Heads, Justin Ponder Jan 2011

"We Are Joined Together Temporarily" The Tragic Mulatto, Fusion Monster In Lee Frost's The Thing With Two Heads, Justin Ponder

Ethnic Studies Review

In Lee Frost's 1972 film The Thing with Two Heads, a white bigot unknowingly has his head surgically grafted onto the body of a black man. From that moment on, these two personalities compete for control of their shared body with ridiculous results. Somewhere between horror and comedy, this Blaxploitation film occupies a strange place in interracial discourse. Throughout American literature, the subgenre of tragic mulatto fiction has critiqued segregation by focusing on the melodramatic lives of those divided by the color line. Most tragic mulatto scholarship has analyzed overtly political novels written by African American writers from the Reconstruction …

“O Brave New World”: Service-Learning And Shakespeare, Matthew C. Hansen Jan 2011

“O Brave New World”: Service-Learning And Shakespeare, Matthew C. Hansen

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

Community-engaged learning is a rising feature of a wide variety of higher education institutions, from community colleges to private liberal arts colleges to large public universities. Everyone, it seems, is getting in on the act, and as a result, the amount of scholarship published on service-learning continues to multiply. There remains, however, curiously little scholarship published on the intersection of service-learning and literary studies. Almost no published scholarship exists on how courses on Shakespeare – a staple of nearly every college English department – might engage with the community through service-learning that provides a genuine community benefit while simultaneously deepening …

All Your Face Are Belong To Us: Protecting Celebrity Images In Hyper-Realistic Video Games, Krista Correa Jan 2011

All Your Face Are Belong To Us: Protecting Celebrity Images In Hyper-Realistic Video Games, Krista Correa

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

As the law is currently structured, there is no clear protection for a celebrity who is personally offended (but not financially harmed) by another party's use of that celebrity's image. This lack of clarity is particularly problematic today due to the hyperrealism of nextgeneration video games. This article begins with a review of the legal rights and remedies currently available to a celebrity whose face or image is used by a game developer without the celebrity's consent. Part II of the article considers whether the current regime provides sufficient protection, while Part III turns to other sources of law and …

The Social Construction Of Self, Kenneth J. Gergen Jan 2011

The Social Construction Of Self, Kenneth J. Gergen

Psychology Faculty Works

This article evaluates the view that the self is social constructed. It explains that a social constructionist approach to the self is critical insofar as it targets many of the traditional conceptions of self under discussion in this volume. It analyses the primary use of the term self in psychological and mental discourse, suggesting many ways in which the sources of knowledge about the realm of the mental are open to question. It cites the work of Michel Foucault and others who develop a sustained critique of what may be the dark side of the construction of the self as …

Using Positive Deviance For Determining Successful Weight- Control Practices, Heather L. Stuckey, Jarol Boan, Jennifer L. Kraschnewski, Michelle Miller-Day, Erik B. Lehman, Christopher N. Sciamanna

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

Based on positive deviance (examining the practices of successful individuals), we identified five primary themes from 36 strategies that help to maintain long-term weight loss (weight control) in 61 people. We conducted in-depth interviews to determine what successful individuals did and/or thought about regularly to control their weight. The themes included weight-control practices related to (a) nutrition: increase water, fruit, and vegetable intake, and consistent meal timing and content; (b) physical activity: follow and track an exercise routine at least 3×/week; (c) restraint: practice restraint by limiting and/or avoiding unhealthy foods; (d) self-monitor: plan meals, and track calories/weight progress; and …

Boumediene As A Constitutional Mandate: Bivens Actions At Guantanamo Bay, Ian Samson Jan 2011

Boumediene As A Constitutional Mandate: Bivens Actions At Guantanamo Bay, Ian Samson

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

The legal status of and the rights of the persons detained at the United States' facility at Guantdnamo Bay are two of the preeminent questions facing today's legal scholars. The United States initially presented Guantdnamo as a legal netherworld-neither fully within nor exempted from the rule of law. But the Supreme Court's decision in Boumediene v. Bush rejected the government's characterization by deciding that, whatever the legal status of Guantdnamo may be, it certainly is not what the government imagined. This note argues that Boumediene's de jure versus de facto sovereignty distinction applies beyond the writ of habeas corpus and …

Marketplace Of Ideas 2.0: Excluding Viewpoints To Include Individuals, Robert Luther Iii Jan 2011

Marketplace Of Ideas 2.0: Excluding Viewpoints To Include Individuals, Robert Luther Iii

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

What are the implications of the Christian Legal Society v. Martinez decision? First, in ruling that public universities may require that all recognized student organizations permit any and "all comers" to be eligible for all offices of the organization, the Court issued a narrow rule that is praiseworthy for its clarity but for little else. Second, and on the issue of precedent, it is worth noting that by ratifying Hastings' "all-comers" policy, the Court overlooked numerous precedents and historical facts that recognize the rights of students to associate with those of similar beliefs on campus and free of university-imposed burdens. …

Urban Green Uses: The New Renewal, Catherine J. Lacroix Jan 2011

Urban Green Uses: The New Renewal, Catherine J. Lacroix

Faculty Publications

As they confront dramatically reduced population and little prospect of significant near-term growth, several cities in the rust belt have turned to innovative tactics to put excess land to beneficial use. These measures include the creation of active land banks, downzoning for "green" uses such as urban agriculture, possible consolidation of population and abandonment of utility and public services, and installation of green infrastructure, such as stormwater retention and renewable power generation facilities, on publicly owned land. In the process, these cities face intriguing legal questions: What steps are needed to form an effective land bank? What is the liability …

No Difference?: An Analysis Of Same-Sex Parenting, George W. Dent Jan 2011

No Difference?: An Analysis Of Same-Sex Parenting, George W. Dent

Faculty Publications

The principal argument for traditional marriage is that it is uniquely beneficial to children. The campaign for same-sex marriage (“SSM”) denies this argument and claims that same-sex couples are just as good as other parents; there is “no difference” between the two. This article analyzes this claim and concludes that it is unsubstantiated and almost certainly false.

A Collaborative Model Of Offshore Legal Outsourcing, Cassandra Burke Robertson Jan 2011

A Collaborative Model Of Offshore Legal Outsourcing, Cassandra Burke Robertson

Faculty Publications

International outsourcing has come to the legal profession. The ABA and other bar associations have given it their stamp of approval, and an ailing economy has pushed both clients and firms to consider sending more legal work abroad. This article integrates research from the fields of organizational behavior, social psychology, and economic theory to analyze the effectiveness of the legal outsourcing relationship. It identifies organizational pressures in the practice of law that affect how legal work is performed in a transnational context, and it examines how individuals on both sides of the outsourcing process influence the success or failure of …

Publications

Loblolly pine (LP; Pinus taeda L.) is the most economically important tree in the U.S. and a cornerstone species in southeastern forests. However, genomics research on LP and other conifers has lagged behind studies on flowering plants due, in part, to the large size of conifer genomes. As a means to accelerate conifer genome research, we constructed a BAC library for the LP genotype 7-56. The LP BAC library consists of 1,824,768 individually-archived clones making it the largest single BAC library constructed to date, has a mean insert size of 96 kb, and affords 7.6X coverage of the 21.7 Gb …

Lifestyles Of The Not So Rich And Famous: Ideological Shifts In Popular Culture, Reagan-Era Sitcoms And Portrayals Of The Working Class, April Janise Raine Jan 2011

Lifestyles Of The Not So Rich And Famous: Ideological Shifts In Popular Culture, Reagan-Era Sitcoms And Portrayals Of The Working Class, April Janise Raine

McNair Scholars Research Journal

My research indentifies, through examination of popular culture, a major shift in meanings and values surrounding the working class at a vital time in US history: the Reagan years. During the Reagan Era, the working class was weakened economically, politically and ideologically. I explore three salient themes evidenced throughout the family-centered sitcoms analyzed in my research: Minimization of Working-Class jobs, Working Class Selfdeprecation and Defeat, and the Stigmatization of aid/assistance. These themes emerged from an inductive analysis of family based sitcoms (airing 1980-1988) which encompassed main characters who were both representatives of the corporate elite and had direct interactions with …

Ethnographic Introduction Of Coping In A Timber-Dependent Community, Levin Welch Jan 2011

Ethnographic Introduction Of Coping In A Timber-Dependent Community, Levin Welch

McNair Scholars Research Journal

The effects of socioeconomic change on individuals is a central theme of sociology. In order to understand how society functions the impacts of social change on individuals must be examined. In extreme cases, where a community’s economy is dependent on a single resource, change can hit hard and fast. Most research on these communities is quantitative and has been successful in identifying social problems associated with resource dependence, but people react in the context of local history and value systems. Most studies have been limited in their examination of this context. This has been recognized by researchers who have argued …

Evolution In Coyotes (Canis Latrans) In Response To The Megafaunal Extinctions, Julie Meachen, Joshua Samuels Jan 2011

Evolution In Coyotes (Canis Latrans) In Response To The Megafaunal Extinctions, Julie Meachen, Joshua Samuels

United States National Park Service: Publications

Living coyotes modify their behavior in the presence of larger carnivores, such as wolves. However, little is known about the effects of competitor presence or absence on morphological change in coyotes or wolves over long periods of time. We examined the evolution of coyotes and wolves through time from the late Pleistocene, during which many large carnivorous species coexisted as predators and competitors, to the Recent; this allowed us to investigate evolutionary changes in these species in response to climate change and megafaunal extinctions at the end of the Pleistocene. We measured postcranial skeletal morphologies of wolves (Canis lupus …

Agate Fossil Beds National Monument Plant Community Composition And Structure Monitoring, Isabel W. Ashton, Michael Prowatzke, Michael R. Bynum, Tim Shepherd, Stephen K. Wilson, Kara Paintner-Green Jan 2011

Agate Fossil Beds National Monument Plant Community Composition And Structure Monitoring, Isabel W. Ashton, Michael Prowatzke, Michael R. Bynum, Tim Shepherd, Stephen K. Wilson, Kara Paintner-Green

United States National Park Service: Publications

The Northern Great Plains Inventory & Monitoring Network (NGPN) was established to develop and provide scientifically credible information on the current status and long-term trends of the composition, structure, and function of ecosystems in thirteen parks located in five northern Great Plains states. NGPN identified upland plant communities, exotic plant early detection, and riparian lowland communities as vital signs that can be used to better understand the condition of terrestrial park ecosystems (Gitzen et al. 2010). Upland and riparian ecosystems are important targets for vegetation monitoring because the status and trends in plant communities provide critical insights into the status …
