Antispasmodic And Ca++ Antagonist Potential Of Marrubiin, A Labdane Type Diterpene From Phlomis Bracteosa, Javid Hussain, Riaz Ullah, Arif-Ullah Khan, Fazal Mabood, Mohammad Raza Shah, Ahmed Al-Harrasi, Anwar Gilani Jan 2011

Antispasmodic And Ca++ Antagonist Potential Of Marrubiin, A Labdane Type Diterpene From Phlomis Bracteosa, Javid Hussain, Riaz Ullah, Arif-Ullah Khan, Fazal Mabood, Mohammad Raza Shah, Ahmed Al-Harrasi, Anwar Gilani

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

A tricyclic labdane type diterpene was isolated for the first time from ethyl acetate soluble part of Phlomis bracteosa. Its structure was confirmed by x-ray which was found to be marrubiin. When studied in isolated rabbit jejunum, marrubiin caused concentration-dependent relaxation of spontaneous and high K+ (80 mM)-induced contractions, like that caused by verapamil, indicating that marrubiin exhibits spasmolytic activity, possibly mediated through Ca++ channel blocking action.

Department of Emergency Medicine

Nitric oxide (NO) is crucial in diverse physiological and pathological processes. We show that a hypomorphic mouse model of argininosuccinate lyase (encoded by Asl) deficiency has a distinct phenotype of multiorgan dysfunction and NO deficiency. Loss of Asl in both humans and mice leads to reduced NO synthesis, owing to both decreased endogenous arginine synthesis and an impaired ability to use extracellular arginine for NO production. Administration of nitrite, which can be converted into NO in vivo, rescued the manifestations of NO deficiency in hypomorphic Asl mice, and a nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-independent NO donor restored NO-dependent vascular reactivity in …

Non-Being And Memory: A Critique Of Pure Difference In Derrida And Deleuze, Frank Scalambrino Jan 2011

Non-Being And Memory: A Critique Of Pure Difference In Derrida And Deleuze, Frank Scalambrino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The psychology philosophy split has restricted viable readings of today's psychological research. My project (within the philosophy of psychology) is to provide these readings. Specifically, in this dissertation I analyze the data and the interpretations of a large number of contemporary memory research articles. I use these articles to support my claim that Immanuel Kant misunderstood what in the Critique of Pure Reason he labeled "affinity." Further, Jacques Derrida and Gilles Deleuze inherit this Kantian misunderstanding by way of G.W.F. Hegel's attempt to eliminate it. Put another way, the component in question is that which grounds the post-structuralist justification for …

Graduate Recital, Flute, Deidre Huckabay Jan 2011

Graduate Recital, Flute, Deidre Huckabay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This recital explores works for flute inspired by birdsong. The flute's range and flexibility make the instrument a match for the avian syrinx. Vivaldi's Concerto in D Major presents a bird that bursts into refined song for the listener's pleasure. This showpiece depicts a captive pet at once caged and preserved for exhibition by the musical score. Messiaen's Le Merle Noir, on the other hand, features an unruly specimen whose shrill utterances and suspended melodies suggest both volatility and ancient wisdom. Other works on the program explore birdsong differently: Michael Colquhoun's work requires the performer to arrange "chirps" during performance, …

Development And Psychometric Evaluation Of An Instrument To Assess The Treatment Fidelity Of A Brief Opportunistic Intervention To Reduce Substance Use Among Pregnant Women, Antonia Torrey Jan 2011

Development And Psychometric Evaluation Of An Instrument To Assess The Treatment Fidelity Of A Brief Opportunistic Intervention To Reduce Substance Use Among Pregnant Women, Antonia Torrey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although abstinence from alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) among pregnant women is a leading national objective, prenatal use has not decreased. Evidence-based interventions that can be replicated in practice are critically needed and brief interventions have shown promise in reducing prenatal ATOD use. The "I Am Concerned" (IAC) brief opportunistic intervention is currently being implemented by frontline primary prenatal care staff members in several areas of the United States. Evaluation of treatment fidelity, to determine if behavioral interventions are delivered as intended, is essential to controlled research. This study constituted the first step in the development and psychometric evaluation …

Neuroendocrine Mechanisms Mediating Pheromonal Modulation Of Behavior In Terrestrial Salamanders, Corina Wack Jan 2011

Neuroendocrine Mechanisms Mediating Pheromonal Modulation Of Behavior In Terrestrial Salamanders, Corina Wack

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pheromones are chemosensory cues released by an individual to cause a behavioral or physiological change in a conspecific. These changes can range from increasing a female's receptivity to altering hormone secretions in the body. The red-legged salamander (Plethodon shermani) is an emerging non-mammalian model for understanding the evolution of chemical communication due to their well-characterized pheromones. Plethodontid salamanders secrete pheromones from their submandibular gland, called mental gland pheromones. Previous studies showed that mental gland pheromones increased receptivity in females during courtship and also increased corticosterone (CORT) concentrations in males. CORT is a metabolic hormone that mediates vertebrate stress responses. To …

Unchaste Veneration In Titian's Worship Of Venus, Fern Luskin Jan 2011

Unchaste Veneration In Titian's Worship Of Venus, Fern Luskin

Publications and Research

The identity, activities, and attributes of Venus and her devotees in Titian's Worship of Venus have long been misunderstood. Although based on Philostratus' Erotes, Titian's actual textual source was Demetrios Moschos' Italian translation of the Erotes. Previous analyses of Titian's painting have relied either on faulty transcriptions and translations of Moschos' Amori, or on the original Greek or Loeb edition of Philostratus, which differ from Moschos' work. A careful translation of Moschos' text, closely compared to Titian's painting, yields a new interpretation of its theme, riddles, and humorous double entendres pointing toward a decidedly unchaste Venus worshipped not …

Climate Change: The Fork At The End Of Now, Micha Tomkiewicz Jan 2011

Climate Change: The Fork At The End Of Now, Micha Tomkiewicz

Publications and Research

There are many books on global warming written entirely from a layman's perspective, and there is a great deal of scientific literature on this subject. But few if any books attempt to bridge the science to those who lack a rigorous background in mathematics, physics and chemistry-but who may be working on careers in environmental science and policy. The new text is designed to introduce the field of global climate change from a scientific perspective-but written in a way that is accessible to students with some or little science background. It reviews the basic principles of climatic thermodynamics and atmospheric …

The Patriation And Quebec Veto References: The Supreme Court Wrestles With The Political Part Of The Constitution, Peter H. Russell Jan 2011

The Patriation And Quebec Veto References: The Supreme Court Wrestles With The Political Part Of The Constitution, Peter H. Russell

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

The Supreme Court’s decision in the Patriation Reference was a landmark in the jurisprudential analysis of the role of constitutional conventions in the law of the Constitution. The Court’s majority adopted Ivor Jennings’ test for identifying constitutional conventions. The two crucial components of that test are: (1) acceptance by the players involved that they are bound by a rule; and (2) the principle underlying the rule. In the Patriation Reference, applying Jennings’ test, the majority found that there was a constitutional convention requiring a substantial measure of provincial consent for requests by the federal Parliament to the U.K. Parliament to …

Not A General Regulatory Power: A Comment On Reference Re Assisted Human Reproduction Act, Graeme G. Mitchell Jan 2011

Not A General Regulatory Power: A Comment On Reference Re Assisted Human Reproduction Act, Graeme G. Mitchell

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

Reference re Assisted Human Reproduction Act is the Supreme Court of Canada’s most important ruling on the criminal law power in more than a decade. It demonstrates that the Court has become uncomfortable with the federal government’s use of section 91(27) of the Constitution Act, 1867 as Parliament’s general regulatory power. The paper begins with a review of the Assisted Human Reproduction Act, with particular reference to those aspects of the statute at issue in the Reference. Next, the three opinions delivered in the Reference are analyzed and their doctrinal significance identified. Finally, consideration is given to the implications for …

Mass Conservation Analysis For The Lower St. Johns River Using Continuous And Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Methods, Lillie E. Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides a mass conservation analysis of the Lower St. Johns River for the purpose of providing basis for future salinity transport modeling. The analysis provides an assessment of the continuous (CG) and discontinuous (DG) Galerkin finite element methods with respect to their mass conservation properties. The following thesis also presents a rigorous literature review pertaining to salinity transport in the Lower St. Johns River, from which this effort generates the data used to initialize and validate numerical simulations. Two research questions are posed and studied in this thesis: can a DG-based modeling approach produce mass conservative numerical solutions; …

Fragrant Or Foul? - Regulation Of The Global Perfume Industry And The Implications For American Sovereignty, Caroline M. Reebs Jan 2011

Fragrant Or Foul? - Regulation Of The Global Perfume Industry And The Implications For American Sovereignty, Caroline M. Reebs

UC Law SF International Law Review

The regulation of fragranced personal care products is increasingly scrutinized in the United States. As the FDA's cosmetic product requirements are minimal, particularly when compared to those followed by food producers and drug manufacturers, consumer groups emphasize the negative health implications. Industry, on the other hand, maintains that fragrances are safe for use and are effectively monitored by international trade associations. Because the government plays a modest role in cosmetic regulation, an arbiter is needed.

This Note examines the above concerns in a comparative light. The European Union's Cosmetic Directive imposes more requirements on cosmetic manufacturers and maintains a lengthier …

Constructing And Disciplining The Working Body: Organisational Discourses, Globalisation And The Mobile Worker, Marian Crowley-Henry, Paul Donnelly Jan 2011

Constructing And Disciplining The Working Body: Organisational Discourses, Globalisation And The Mobile Worker, Marian Crowley-Henry, Paul Donnelly

Books/Book Chapters

We consider the ethical treatment of people working in organizations along the relativism/absolutism continuum. Work is a dominant activity in people’s lives and a core part of people’s identities. In it is the managerial realm of Human Resource Management where the focus on the working body primarily resides. The construction and disciplining of the working body is theoretically and empirically explored in this chapter. Do organizations construct and discipline their workforce as a means to their organizational ends (as resources), or do they treat them as means in themselves (as humans)? We trace organizational discourses that emphasize resources rather than …

Exploring The Impact Of And Perceptions About Interactive, Self-Explaining Environments In Molecular-Level Animations, David A. Falvo, Michael J. Urban, Jerry P. Suits

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

This mixed-method study investigates the effects of interactivity in animations of a molecular-level process and explores perceptions about the animated learning tool used. Treatments were based on principles of cognitive psychology designed to study the main effects of treatment and spatial ability and their interaction. Results with students (n = 189) showed that science majors scored higher than non-science majors in retention measures (i.e., structure and function) but not in transfer. Significant main effects were found for treatment in function questions and spatial ability in structure questions. There was a significant interaction between treatment and spatial ability in structure questions. …

The Buds And The Bees: Inquiry Into The Sexual Reproduction Of Plants, Timothy D. Goodman, Laurence H. Woodruff Jan 2011

The Buds And The Bees: Inquiry Into The Sexual Reproduction Of Plants, Timothy D. Goodman, Laurence H. Woodruff

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Many students have few significant experiences investigating flower structure and function, yet are expected to understand sexual reproduction in angiosperms. We present here an inquiry-based hands-on activity where middle school students compare plant reproduction to more commonly understood animal reproduction. This provides a foundation to more deeply understand topics related to plant reproduction. This activity also provides many opportunities to explicitly address the nature of science and how science works. This article addresses National Science Education Content Standards A, C, and G, and Iowa Teaching Standards 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Rock Pigeon Use Of Livestock Facilities In Northern Colorado: Implications For Improving Farm Bio-Security., James C. Carlson, Larry Clark, Michael F. Antolin, M. D. Salman Jan 2011

Rock Pigeon Use Of Livestock Facilities In Northern Colorado: Implications For Improving Farm Bio-Security., James C. Carlson, Larry Clark, Michael F. Antolin, M. D. Salman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Rock pigeons (Columba livia) have been implicated in the spread of pathogens within commercial livestock facilities. Currently, there is no data characterizing pigeon habitat use and movement patterns within and among commercial livestock facilities. To better understand the capacity for pigeons to spread pathogens, we used radio-telemetry techniques to estimate the home-range, travel distance, activity, and habitat use of pigeons roosting on and off dairies and feedlots in western Weld County, Colorado. Our observations suggest that pigeons roosting on (resident) and off (nonresident) livestock facilities use habitat differently. Nonresident pigeons used larger home-range areas than did resident pigeons. Nonresident pigeons …

Reconciling Sensory Cues And Varied Consequences Of Avian Repellents, Scott J. Werner, Frederick D. Provenza Jan 2011

Reconciling Sensory Cues And Varied Consequences Of Avian Repellents, Scott J. Werner, Frederick D. Provenza

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We learned previously that red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) use affective processes to shift flavor preference, and cognitive associations (colors) to avoid food, subsequent to avoidance conditioning. We conducted three experiments with captive red-winged blackbirds to reconcile varied consequences of treated food with conditioned sensory cues. In Experiment 1, we compared food avoidance conditioned with lithium chloride (LiCl) or naloxone hydrochloride (NHCl) to evaluate cue–consequence specificity. All blackbirds conditioned with LiCl (gastrointestinal toxin) avoided the color (red) and flavor (NaCl) of food experienced during conditioning; birds conditioned with NHCl (opioid antagonist) avoided only the color (not the flavor) of …

Evaluation Of Fecal Dna Preservation Techniques And Effects Of Sample Age And Diet On Genotyping Success, Michael Panasci, Warren B. Ballard, Stewart W. Breck, David Rodriguez, Llewellyn D. Densmore Iii, David B. Wester, Robert J. Baker Jan 2011

Evaluation Of Fecal Dna Preservation Techniques And Effects Of Sample Age And Diet On Genotyping Success, Michael Panasci, Warren B. Ballard, Stewart W. Breck, David Rodriguez, Llewellyn D. Densmore Iii, David B. Wester, Robert J. Baker

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Optimal collection and preservation protocols for fecal DNA genotyping are not firmly established. We evaluated 3 factors that influence microsatellite genotyping success of fecal DNA extracted from coyote (Canis latrans) scats: 1) age of scat, 2) preservative, and 3) diet content. We quantified genotyping success by comparing rates of allelic dropout, false alleles, and failed amplifications among consensus genotypes. We used a panel of 6 microsatellite loci to genotype 20 scat samples, each of which was subjected to 3 age (1 day, 5 days, and 10 days post-deposition) and 3 preservation (DET buffer, 95% ethanol [EtOH], and lysis …

Making Contact: Rooting Out The Potential For Exposure Of Commercial Production Swine Facilities To Feral Swine In North Carolina, Richard M. Engeman, Carl Betsill, Tom Ray Jan 2011

Making Contact: Rooting Out The Potential For Exposure Of Commercial Production Swine Facilities To Feral Swine In North Carolina, Richard M. Engeman, Carl Betsill, Tom Ray

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Despite North Carolina’s long history with feral swine, populations were low or absent in eastern counties until the 1990s. Feral swine populations have since grown in these counties which also contain a high density of commercial production swine (CPS) facilities. Sixteen of the highest swine producing U.S. counties also populated with feral swine are in North Carolina. Disconcertingly, since 2009, positive tests for exposure to swine brucellosis or pseudorabies virus have been found for feral swine. We surveyed 120 CSP facilities across four eastern counties to document the level and perception of feral swine activity around CSP facilities and to …

Pituophis Catenifer Deserticola (Great Basin Gophersnake) Predation, Steven J. Wamback, Richard M. Engeman Jan 2011

Pituophis Catenifer Deserticola (Great Basin Gophersnake) Predation, Steven J. Wamback, Richard M. Engeman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

A variety of taxa have been observed to· prey upon Pituophis catenifer, including mammals, birds-of prey, and other snakes. Here, we describe an unusual two-day observation of predation on a mature Great Basin gophersnake by a brown trout (Salmo trutta).

The observation took place in Jones Canyon, Utah, USA, on the grounds of the Jones Hole National Fish Hatchery (JHNFH). Jones Creek' emanates from springs at the head of Jones Canyon on hatchery grounds, and flows north to south 6.4 km to the Green River, approximately paralleling the Utah-Colorado border. The stream runs for about 0.3 km …
