The Church Abuse Scandal: Were Crimes Against Humanity Committed?, Dermot Groome Jan 2011

The Church Abuse Scandal: Were Crimes Against Humanity Committed?, Dermot Groome

Faculty Scholarship

Increasingly shocking revelations about sexual abuse by members of Catholic religious congregations and diocesan priests have recently raised the question of whether such widespread abuses constitute crimes against humanity. This paper considers that question in the context of a report issued by the Ryan Commission, an independent quasi-judicial commission that spent 10 years conducting detailed investigations into childcare institutions operated by Catholic religious congregations in Ireland. The Ryan Commission’s findings with respect to both widespread physical and sexual abuse provide a factual basis upon which to consider whether crimes against humanity were in fact committed. Contrasting the intentionality of behind …

Shopping For State Constitutions: Unequal Gift Clauses As Obstacles To Optimal State Encouragement Of Carbon Sequestration, Nicholas Houpt Jan 2011

Shopping For State Constitutions: Unequal Gift Clauses As Obstacles To Optimal State Encouragement Of Carbon Sequestration, Nicholas Houpt

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

Carbon capture and sequestration technology (CCS) could drastically reduce CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants, thereby mitigating climate change. CCS, however, faces a difficult barrier to market entry: liability for the technology’s many long-term risks. States would like to alleviate this long-term liability problem to capture CCS’s social benefits. Some state constitutions, however, have provisions called “gift clauses” that prohibit giving aid to private parties. This Note argues that some state constitutions’ gift clauses prevent indemnification of private CCS developers. As this Note’s fifty state survey shows, other state constitutions allow indemnification. This asymmetry in constitutionally-allowed financial encouragement results in …

The Use Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids In Mental Illness, Jessica L. Gören, T. Tewksbury Jan 2011

The Use Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids In Mental Illness, Jessica L. Gören, T. Tewksbury

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Purpose: This article will summarize the current evidence on the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on prevention and treatment of mental illness. Background: Omega-3 fatty acids are involved in many physiologic processes. Since they cannot be made de novo in the body, they are considered essential nutrients. As the Western diet evolved, dietary intake of fatty acids has shifted to increased omega-6 fatty acids and decreased omega-3 fatty acids intake. These changes have been correlated with numerous differences in prevalence and course of mental illnesses. Methods: A MEDLINE search from 1966 to December 2010 was completed to …

Holy Cow: Staging Boucicault's The Shaughraun, Patrick Michael Finelli, Jason Winfield Jan 2011

Holy Cow: Staging Boucicault's The Shaughraun, Patrick Michael Finelli, Jason Winfield

Theatre and Dance Faculty Publications

Examines the design process, fabrication of settings and production of Boucicault's 19th century melodrama using a large (10' by 16') fiberglass cow on a turntable. The setting called for multiple locations ranging from a cottage to cliff tops and a ship's dock. Computer CAD Photoshop modeling used for previsualization and special construction techniques were used to create acting areas inside and on top of the cow set piece.

Tissue-Specific Regulation Of Mouse Microrna Genes In Endoderm-Derived Tissues., Yan Gao, Jonathan Schug, Lindsay B Mckenna, John Le Lay, Klaus H Kaestner, Linda E Greenbaum Jan 2011

Tissue-Specific Regulation Of Mouse Microrna Genes In Endoderm-Derived Tissues., Yan Gao, Jonathan Schug, Lindsay B Mckenna, John Le Lay, Klaus H Kaestner, Linda E Greenbaum

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

MicroRNAs fine-tune the activity of hundreds of protein-coding genes. The identification of tissue-specific microRNAs and their promoters has been constrained by the limited sensitivity of prior microRNA quantification methods. Here, we determine the entire microRNAome of three endoderm-derived tissues, liver, jejunum and pancreas, using ultra-high throughput sequencing. Although many microRNA genes are expressed at comparable levels, 162 microRNAs exhibited striking tissue-specificity. After mapping the putative promoters for these microRNA genes using H3K4me3 histone occupancy, we analyzed the regulatory modules of 63 microRNAs differentially expressed between liver and jejunum or pancreas. We determined that the same transcriptional regulatory mechanisms govern tissue-specific …

Investigating The Role Of Calcineurin In Axon Growth And Development Of Retinal Neurons, Jesus Iniguez Jan 2011

Investigating The Role Of Calcineurin In Axon Growth And Development Of Retinal Neurons, Jesus Iniguez

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This research project entails the characterization of Calcineurin (CaN) in neuron development. CaN is an intracellular protein that has been implicated in different systems as a mediator between cells and their surroundings to promote normal, healthy function (Lee & Park; 2006). Receptors on the surface of cells are known to stimulate intracellular changes, CaN is thought to mediate some of these changes, including during neurodevelopment. As a neuron develops, it extends a process (axon) in search of a specific target with which to form a synapse. Initial embryonic axon growth is directly related to axon growth and regeneration in adults. …

"Do Androids Dream?": Personhood And Intelligent Artifacts, F. Patrick Hubbard Jan 2011

"Do Androids Dream?": Personhood And Intelligent Artifacts, F. Patrick Hubbard

Faculty Publications

This Article proposes a test to be used in answering an important question that has never received detailed jurisprudential analysis: What happens if a human artifact like a large computer system requests that it be treated as a person rather than as property? The Article argues that this entity should be granted a legal right to personhood if it has the following capacities: (1) an ability to interact with its environment and to engage in complex thought and communication; (2) a sense of being a self with a concern for achieving its plan for its life; and (3) the ability …

Animal Models For Periodontal Disease, Helieh S. Oz, David A. Puleo Jan 2011

Animal Models For Periodontal Disease, Helieh S. Oz, David A. Puleo

Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications

Animal models and cell cultures have contributed new knowledge in biological sciences, including periodontology. Although cultured cells can be used to study physiological processes that occur during the pathogenesis of periodontitis, the complex host response fundamentally responsible for this disease cannot be reproduced in vitro. Among the animal kingdom, rodents, rabbits, pigs, dogs, and nonhuman primates have been used to model human periodontitis, each with advantages and disadvantages. Periodontitis commonly has been induced by placing a bacterial plaque retentive ligature in the gingival sulcus around the molar teeth. In addition, alveolar bone loss has been induced by inoculation or …
