Wyschogrod’S Hand: Saints, Animality, And The Labor Of Love, Virginia Burrus
Wyschogrod’S Hand: Saints, Animality, And The Labor Of Love, Virginia Burrus
Religion - All Scholarship
That the lives of saints constitute an unmediated appeal suggests both a call to imitate what cannot be imitated (thus can result in no mimesis of sameness) and a call to respond to the extremity of the saint's vulnerability; and I would suggest that the two calls turn out to be the same. Because the saint is radically open to the need of others, she is endlessly vulnerable to need herself (she will give everything, again and again); and because she is endlessly vulnerable to need herself, she is radically open to the need of others.

The Little Metropolis: Religion, Politics, & Spolia, Paul Brazinski

There have been numerous councils throughout the Catholic Church?s history. From the First Council of Nicaea in 325 CE to Vatican II in 1962, only a few centuries have passed without any major church doctrinal change. Following hand in hand with changes in doctrine came the bifurcation of the Christian Church into the Roman CatholicChurch and the Orthodox Church. The first split came in 325 CE with Arianism. Arius of Alexandria and his followers did not agree with the Catholic Church?s viewpoint that the son, Jesus, should be on equal footing with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Constantine the …

Exploring The Open-Close Mechanism Of Dimorphotheca Aurantiaca: Day Versus Night And Cold Versus Hot Temperatures, Tommy Chung, Kathleen Aguilar, Sunny Kim
Featured Research
In the spring of every year on Pepperdine University’s campus, patches of hills are covered with the South African native flower Dimorphotheca aurantiaca or more commonly known as the African Daisy. An observation of the opening and closing mechanism of the flower triggered an important question: does the flower change its shape based on temperature or the presence of light? At night, the African Daisy closes and then opens up again in the daytime. Because temperature has such strong effects on different species of ectodermic animals and temperature-sensitive plants, we hypothesized that the change in temperature initiates the flower’s morphological …
Leading By Example: A Comparison Of New Zealand's And The United States' Invasive Species Policies Note, Flynn Boonstra
Leading By Example: A Comparison Of New Zealand's And The United States' Invasive Species Policies Note, Flynn Boonstra
Connecticut Law Review
Invasive species pose a threat to native ecosystems and to the economy. It is estimated that the United States spends $138 billion annually in agricultural losses, infrastructure damage, and management costs stemming from invasive species. The United States’ invasive species management policy is a conglomeration of federal and state statutes that do not coalesce into a comprehensive policy. As a result, the country has many open pathways for introduction and lacks a mechanism to identify those pathways. In contrast, New Zealand is a world-leader in its comprehensive and proactive invasive species policy. Although the United States faces unique challenges with …
Beyond The Best Black: The Making Of A Critical Race Theorist At Yale Law School Commentary: Critical Race Theory: A Commemoration: Response: Essay, Luke Charles Harris
Beyond The Best Black: The Making Of A Critical Race Theorist At Yale Law School Commentary: Critical Race Theory: A Commemoration: Response: Essay, Luke Charles Harris
Connecticut Law Review
In Kimberld Williams Crenshaw's lead article in this Commentary Issue she contends that critical insights on race often develop out of institutional struggles over the terms upon which racial politics are engaged and normalized My pathway to Critical Race Theory (CRT) confirms this idea. Thus, this comment traces the making of a critical race theorist at Yale through the contested discourses around race, meritocracy and affirmative action. These discourses not only shaped my experiences while I was at Yale, they also influenced my thoughts on these matters throughout my career as I transitioned from private practice back to life in …
Inventing Norms, William Hubbard
Inventing Norms, William Hubbard
Connecticut Law Review
Patent law strives to promote the progress of technology by encouraging invention. Traditionally, scholars contend that patent law achieves this goal by creating financial incentives to invent in the form of exclusive rights to new technology. This traditional view of invention, however, fails to recognize that inventors are motivated by more than money. Like most people, inventors are also motivated by social norms, that is, shared normative beliefs favoring certain actions while disfavoring others. This Article argues that many Americans embrace social norms that favor and encourage successful invention. Because of these "inventing norms" inventors enjoy enhanced personal satisfaction and …
The Village As Cold War Site: Experts, Development, And The History Of Rural Reconstruction, Nicole Sackley
The Village As Cold War Site: Experts, Development, And The History Of Rural Reconstruction, Nicole Sackley
History Faculty Publications
This article examines ‘the village’ as a category of development knowledge used by policymakers and experts to remake the ‘Third World’ during the Cold War. The idea of the village as a universal category of underdevelopment, capable of being remade by expert-led social reform, structured efforts to win the ‘hearts and minds’ of people from Asia to Latin America and Africa. Rooted in a transnational interwar movement for rural reconstruction, village projects were transformed in the 1950s and 1960s by a scientization of development that narrowed the range of experts in the field and by Cold War politics that increasingly …
The Value Of Intersectional Comparative Analysis To The Post-Racial Future Of Critical Race Theory: A Brazil-U.S. Comparative Case Study Commentary: Critical Race Theory: A Commemoration: Response, Tanya Kateri Hernandez
The Value Of Intersectional Comparative Analysis To The Post-Racial Future Of Critical Race Theory: A Brazil-U.S. Comparative Case Study Commentary: Critical Race Theory: A Commemoration: Response, Tanya Kateri Hernandez
Connecticut Law Review
This Commentary Article aims to illustrate the value of comparative law to the jurisprudence of Critical Race Theory (CRT), particularly with reference to the CRT project of deconstructing the mystique of "postracialism. " The central thesis of the Article is that the dangerous seductions of a U.S. ideology of "post-racialism" are more clearly identified when subject to the comparative law lens. In particular, a comparison to the Brazilian racial democracy version of "post-racialism" is an instructive platform from which to assess the advisability of promoting post-racial analyses of U.S. racial inequality. In Part I the Article introduces the value of …

Twenty Years Of Critical Race Theory: Looking Back To Move Forward Commentary: Critical Race Theory: A Commemoration: Lead Article, Kimberle Williams Crenshaw
Connecticut Law Review
This Article revisits the history of Critical Race Theory (CRT) through a prism that highlights its historical articulation in light of the emergence of postracialism. The Article will explore two central inquiries. This first query attends to the specific contours of law as the site out of which CRT emerged. The Article hypothesizes that legal discourse presented a particularly legible template from which to demystify the role of reason and the rule of law in upholding the racial order. The second objective is to explore the contemporary significance of CRT's trajectory in light of today's "post-racial" milieu. The Article posits …
Health Care Reform In Virginia: Lessons Learned Before, During, And After The 2011 Virginia General Assembly, Hunter W. Jamerson
Health Care Reform In Virginia: Lessons Learned Before, During, And After The 2011 Virginia General Assembly, Hunter W. Jamerson
Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest
This article surveys Virginia's initial foray into health care reform. This process began with the Virginia Health Reform Initiative, which had a significant presence in the Virginia 2011 General Assembly session. While the nascent health care reform efforts this session reflect only incremental steps, they are indicative of Virginia's direction and commitment to change. Such change, however, will carry great political and professional strife. This article highlights some examples of the challenges faced on the road to health care reform and discusses possible directions of future legislation in the Virginia General Assembly.
