Five Strategies To Support All Teachers: Suggestions To Get Off The Slippery Slope Of "Cookbook" Science Teaching, Paula A. Magee, Ryan Flessner Jan 2011

Five Strategies To Support All Teachers: Suggestions To Get Off The Slippery Slope Of "Cookbook" Science Teaching, Paula A. Magee, Ryan Flessner

Scholarship and Professional Work – Education

Many teachers shudder at the thought of implementing an inquiry curriculum. Perhaps they envision a rowdy classroom with little learning. Maybe they wonder, "How will this connect to all the standards?" Fortunately, these legitimate concerns can be addressed, and all students can engage in thoughtfully constructed inquiry science experiences. In this article, we outline five strategies that we have used with elementary school teachers as they moved from a "cookbook" approach in science to an approach that is inquiry-based. Having presented these five strategies in a linear format, we know that on the surface this may seem close to the …

A Real-Time Rfid Localization Experiment Using Propagation Models, Jason L. Brchan, Lianlin Zhao, Jiaqing Wu Jan 2011

A Real-Time Rfid Localization Experiment Using Propagation Models, Jason L. Brchan, Lianlin Zhao, Jiaqing Wu

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

This paper introduces a real-time localization system (RTLS) using efficient multiple propagation models to compensate for the drawback of the received signal strength technique. The RTLS is implemented on an active RFID system and uses received signal strength measurements and reference tags for ranging. The RTLS is implemented purely in software that post processes the received signal strength data from the reader and does not require any additional hardware or any modifications to the RFID reader or tags. The proposed algorithm using multiple propagation models improves the performance of the RTLS. Two-dimensional localization results are given for a four-reader system …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Background: Coral reefs are facing increasing pressure from natural and anthropogenic stressors that have already caused significant worldwide declines. In January 2010, coral reefs of Florida, United States, were impacted by an extreme cold-water anomaly that exposed corals to temperatures well below their reported thresholds (16°C), causing rapid coral mortality unprecedented in spatial extent and severity. Methodology/Principal Findings: Reef surveys were conducted from Martin County to the Lower Florida Keys within weeks of the anomaly. The impacts recorded were catastrophic and exceeded those of any previous disturbances in the region. Coral mortality patterns were directly correlated to in-situ and satellite-derived …

Biodiesel, Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME), is a renewable fuel that is a promising alternative to fossil fuels in the future. Biodiesel not only has similar properties to diesel derived from fossil fuel, but it also provides more environmentally friendly due to lower carbon monoxide and sulfur emissions. Biodiesel is composed of methyl esters which can be synthesized from various fatty acid sources with a present of catalyst. Typical feed-stocks include vegetable oils, such as waste cooking oil, animal fats, and even oil from algae. Four primary ways to use vegetable oil as a fuel are direct use, blending with …

Xanes And Ftir Study On Dried And Calcined Bones, Jayapradhi Rajendran

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

The animal bones are common archeological finds and are helpful in understanding the human past. The bones undergo transformation when they are calcined. The cooked and cremated bones undergo different transformation, because of their difference in their temperatures. Various techniques are employed to characterize the bone. In this study, XANES and FTIR are used to characterize the dried and calcined bones of different species. The calcined bones are prepared at two different temperatures, which helps in understanding the difference between the cooked and cremated bones. The objective of this research is to comprehend the chemical property of the bone material …

Micromotion And Scarring Do Not Contribute To Failure Of Regenerative Peripheral Neural Interfacing, Nivedita Khobragade Jan 2011

Micromotion And Scarring Do Not Contribute To Failure Of Regenerative Peripheral Neural Interfacing, Nivedita Khobragade

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

Neuroprosthetics facilitate amputees with motor function restoration by interfacing nervous system with artificial limb and enabling control of the prosthetic device by volitional thought. Though such neurointerfacing provides dexterity nearly mimicking natural limb agility, the clinical viability of such prosthetics is limited by the lack of long-term reliability. In central nervous system, these implants fail due to foreign body reaction and glial scar formation around the implant. The cause of decrease in active sites of interfacing in peripheral nervous system, which is less invasive than central nervous system implantation, has not been established. Recently an open architecture, regenerative peripheral neural …

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Chronic pain is an important public health issue. Several approaches have been implemented for management of chronic pain, including surgical implantation of neurostimulators. Neurostimulators have been used in clinics for spinal cord implantation and they have been suitable for relieving certain types of pains, such as neuropathic pain in leg or arm, complex regional pain, and refractory angina. The stimulation at spinal cord has little relieving effects on syndromes such as facial pain, cluster headache, phantom limb pain, and post stroke pain. For treating such syndromes, electrical stimulation of deep brain structures such as thalamic nuclei (e.g. ventroposterolateral (VPL) or …

Yahweh As Father: The Image In Ancient Israelite Context And Modern Appropriation, Joshua Wayne Lovelace

MA in Religion Theses

The goal of this thesis was to appropriate the image of Yahweh as father for modern Christendom in light of feminist critiques of the image. The methods in accomplishing this task were as follows: defining feminism and feminist biblical interpretation, conveying the critiques of Rosemary Radford Ruether and Julia M. O'Brien who were scholarly dialogue partners, studying the social milieu of ancient Israel, using historical, literary, textual, and social criticism to exegete texts that mention Yahweh as father, comparing findings of exegesis with social milieu of ancient Israel, responding to critiques of Ruether and O'Brien, and lastly taking the findings …

The Effects Of Maternal Separation On Alcohol Responses In Adult Mice, Rachel Beckstrom Jan 2011

The Effects Of Maternal Separation On Alcohol Responses In Adult Mice, Rachel Beckstrom

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Early environmental stressors may play an important role in the development of alcohol abuse and alcoholism in humans. An animal model of early environmental disturbance, termed maternal separation (MS), has been shown to affect alcohol self-administration in adult animals with short periods of daily separation (e.g., 15 min) resulting in lower alcohol intake in adulthood than longer periods of separation (e.g., 180 or 360 min). The current research investigated the possibility that differences in adult alcohol intake following MS may be due, in part, to alterations in alcohol responses independently from the alcohol's reinforcing properties. In particular, the effects of …

Effects Of Fatty Acids And Bexarotene On Breast Cancer Cell Progression, Jessica Trappmann Jan 2011

Effects Of Fatty Acids And Bexarotene On Breast Cancer Cell Progression, Jessica Trappmann

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Breast cancer cell growth can be inhibited in vivo by retinoid X receptor (RXR) specific retinoids. In both animal and cell culture studies, omega-3 fatty acids share growth regulatory effects similar to those ofRXR specific retinoids (rexinoids). One synthetic rexinoid, bexarotene (LCD 1069, Targretin), is used clinically to treat cancer patients. Of concern is that some patients are unable to tolerate high doses of such treatment drugs. We hypothesized that n-3 fatty acids and bexarotene may work synergistically to slow breast cancer cell growth. To test our hypothesis, we used an in vitro cell culture model, MCF-7, a human breast …

Cyberspace, Exceptionalism, And Innocent Copyright Infringement, Jacqueline D. Lipton Jan 2011

Cyberspace, Exceptionalism, And Innocent Copyright Infringement, Jacqueline D. Lipton

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Direct copyright infringement attracts strict liability. However, as a theoretical matter, it is not necessarily clear why. Legislatures and courts have typically imposed strict liability where: (a) a defendant has notice of a plaintiff's rights, particularly where those rights involve a property interest; (b) a mens rea requirement on the part of the defendant would create an untenable burden on the plaintiff; (c) it is easier for the defendant to avoid harming the plaintiff than it is for the plaintiff to avoid the harm; or, (d) it is more administratively or economically efficient for the defendant to bear the risk …

¡Pendejo! Preschoolers’ Profane Play: Why Children Make Art, Marissa Mcclure Jan 2011

¡Pendejo! Preschoolers’ Profane Play: Why Children Make Art, Marissa Mcclure

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In this article, I address the concept of critical coalitions in play from two perspectives. First, I consider young children’s art making with digital video through contemporary play frames that propose moving beyond the dichotomy of subject (child as actor; active meaning-maker) and object (child as dupe; susceptible to media and moral panic). This reaffirms that play is at once contradictory, pleasurable, fantastic, and culturally purposeful. Analysis of young children’s digital video as play within frameworks proposed by Wilson (1976), Walkerdine (2007), and Freud (1922/1948) allows for an expansion of philosophical ideas about young children’s art making. This coalition between …
