Relationships Of The Heteronchocleidids (Heteronchocleidus, Eutrianchoratus And Trianchoratus) As Inferred From Ribosomal Dna Nucleotide Sequence Data, W.B. Tan, Mun Yik Fong, L.H.S. Lim

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The monogeneans, Heteronchocleidus, Eutrianchoratus and Trianchoratus, were postulated to be closely related based on their haptoral hard parts of three well-developed anchors and one vestigial anchor. In this present study, partial 28S rDNA sequences from 12 heteronchocleidids species (10 Trianchoratus spp. and two Eutrianchoratus spp.) were obtained. Phylogenetic trees generated based on 28S rDNA (from the present study and GenBank) using neighbour-joining (NJ), maximum parsimony (MP), maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) analyses show that members of these three genera constitute a clade. Within this main monophyletic clade are the Heteronchocleidus-Eutrianchoratus and the Trianchoratus clades. This suggests that the …

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

In the last decade, Malaysia has experienced several hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) epidemics, complicated by fatalities due to severe neurological involvement. Enterovirus 71 (EV-71) has been implicated as the major causative agent for these epidemics. EV-71 infection is a global public health problem with pandemic potential. In many parts of Asia-Pacific, the virus has emerged as one of the most deadly virus infections amongst young children. The virus is highly transmissible through faecal-oral route and respiratory droplets. A recent rise in neurological complications and deaths suggests that the viruses currently circulating may be more virulent. The major risk …

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Mucuna pruriens has been used by native Nigerians as a prophylactic for snakebite. The protective effects of M. pruriens seed extract (MPE) were investigated against the pharmacological actions of N. sputatrix (Javan spitting cobra) venom in rats. The results showed that MPE-pretreatment protected against cardiorespiratory and, to a lesser extent, neuromuscular depressant effects of N. sputatrix venom. These may be explained at least in part by the neutralisation of the cobra venom toxins by anti-MPE antibodies elicited by the MPE pretreatment.

The Concept Of Two-Dimensional Electrophoresis-Guided Purification Proven By Isolation Of Rhodocetin From Calloselasma Rhodostoma (Malayan Pit Viper), M.S. Tang, J. Vejayan, H. Ibrahim

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) is an important tool for investigating the complexity of snake venom proteomes. Apart from applications based on whole proteome analysis, we suggest that 2DE can be used as an assay to guide the progress of protein purification. The aim of this study was to prove the feasibility of this concept by using it to purify rhodocetin from Calloselasma rhodostoma venom. Rhodocetin (α subunit) spot on the 2DE profile of C. rhodostoma venom was first identified and confirmed by mass spectrometry, with a molecular mass of 16 kDa and calculated pI of 5.16. Rhodocetin was subsequently purified …

Massive Modularity, Content Integration, And Language, Collin Rice Jan 2011

Massive Modularity, Content Integration, And Language, Collin Rice

Philosophy Faculty Research and Scholarship

One of the obstacles facing massive modularity is how a pervasively modular mind might generate non-domain-specific thoughts by integrating the content produced by various domain-specific modules. Peter Carruthers has recently argued that the operations of the language faculty are constitutive of the process by which the human mind is able to integrate content from heterogeneous conceptual domains. In this article, I first argue that Carruthers’s data do not provide support for either of two possible interpretations of his thesis. In addition, I provide empirical and theoretical reasons for thinking content integration is performed external to the language faculty.
