Sexual Offender Registries: Public Safety Or Scarlet Letter?, Marilyn Hiller Jan 2011

Sexual Offender Registries: Public Safety Or Scarlet Letter?, Marilyn Hiller

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Sexual offender legislation has been based on “moral panics” stemming from sensationalized cases (i.e. Wetterling, Kanka, and Klaas). The variety of sex offenders that are treated with blanket punishment is causing collateral consequences which actually create more risk to the public. By comparing the Idaho Sexual Offender Registry with the Idaho Department of Justice Database, this study determined what offenses were being committed after placement on the registry. My research identifies a collateral consequence of unsafe driving conditions. It found that there was a 113% increase of moving traffic related charges and 94% increase of non-moving violations such as driving …

Straight Is Better: Why Law And Society May Legitimately Prefer Heterosexuality, George W. Dent Jan 2011

Straight Is Better: Why Law And Society May Legitimately Prefer Heterosexuality, George W. Dent

Faculty Publications

America is embroiled in a culture war over homosexuality. The homosexual movement demands the end of “heteronormativity” - the social and legal preference for heterosexuality. It insists that “Gay Is Good” - just as good as heterosexuality. This article presents a defense of heteronormativity; it argues that straight is better. In particular, it argues that naturally conceiving, bearing and raising children is intrinsically good for parents; that it is both intrinsically and instrumentally good for children to be raised by their biological parents who are married to each other; and that traditional marriage is both intrinsically and instrumentally good for …

Joel Chandler Harris Ignites Discussion With His Use Of Dialect Throughout The Uncle Remus Tales, Jessica Cunningham Jan 2011

Joel Chandler Harris Ignites Discussion With His Use Of Dialect Throughout The Uncle Remus Tales, Jessica Cunningham

Honors Capstones

When I began this project, my goal was to find out what the critics of the late 19th and early 20th centuries thought of Joel Chandler Harris and his use of dialect in the Uncle Remus Tales. My paper begins with some background information on Harris to show where he came from and how he ended up as one of the most popular authors in our country's history. I then shared the information I discovered on the differences between the reactions of Northerners and Southerners. There were both positive and negative reactions from both parts of the country. I then …

Dancing Through Hunger : A Dancer's Guide To Nutrition For Optimal Performance, Dominica Sorensen Jan 2011

Dancing Through Hunger : A Dancer's Guide To Nutrition For Optimal Performance, Dominica Sorensen

Honors Capstones

Chronic energy deficiencies leading to impaired performance and injury are a prevalent problem in the dance world. This is due to a lot of dancers’ misconceptions about nutrition as well as what and how much they should be eating to fuel their bodies. This is also due to a high rate of disordered eating and eating disorders among the dance population. This project explores the science behind what dancers should be eating, how much they should be eating, and when they should be eating. Recipes for healthy breakfasts, lunches, and dinners are included as examples for quick and easy solutions …

The "Other Hand Of God," The Church And Other Religious Traditions, Ruben C. Mendoza Jan 2011

The "Other Hand Of God," The Church And Other Religious Traditions, Ruben C. Mendoza

Theology Department Faculty Publications

For the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), the Holy Spirit appears to serve as a key in understanding and interpreting other religious traditions and how the Church is to relate with their followers. The Asian bishops consistently affirm that the Holy Spirit is actively present in other religions and that these religions contain expressions and practices that are inspired and prompted by the Spirit. This is why these manifestations of the Spirit’s presence demands critical discernment and that these must be in dialogue with the Spirit’s activity in the Church. In and through this the Spirit’s manifold works within …

Morinda Citrifolia L. (Noni) Improves The Quality Of Life In Adults With Osteoarthritis, Mian-Ying Wang, M. Nawal Lutfiyya, Vicki Weidenbacher-Hoper, Lin Peng, Martin S. Lipsky, Gary Anderson

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Morinda citrifolia Linn (noni), as a “pain killer”, has been used as a traditional medicine by Polynesians for over 2000 years. It was reported to have a broad range of therapeutic effects including analgesic and anti-inflammation. The in-vitro and in vivoanti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of noni juice (NJ) suggest that NJ may be a useful adjunctive treatment for osteoarthritis (OA). In this pilot study we explored whether NJ improves the symptoms and Quality of Life (QoL) for adults with OA. We also sought to evaluate the tolerability and safety of NJ for patients with OA in …

Wiggling Worms: Using The Learning Cycle In An Elementary Classroom To Study Variation, Lori Marie Ihrig, Jennifer Nicole Prindle Jan 2011

Wiggling Worms: Using The Learning Cycle In An Elementary Classroom To Study Variation, Lori Marie Ihrig, Jennifer Nicole Prindle

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In grades K-2, students are at an age when they start to look closely at living things around them. They can comprehend that while individuals may be of the same kind (i.e., kittens from the same litter), they possess differences. This article uses the learning cycle to engage students in making observations and measurements about plants and animals in order to help them understand “there is variation among individuals of one kind in a population” (AAAS, 1993, p. 107). This article promotes National Science Education Standards A and C, and Iowa Teaching Standards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Rapid Reservoir Inundation Causes Complete Extirpation Of The Eastern Collared Lizard (Crotaphytus Collaris) Along The Shoreline Of Bull Shoals Lake In Northern Arkansas, S. E. Trauth Jan 2011

Rapid Reservoir Inundation Causes Complete Extirpation Of The Eastern Collared Lizard (Crotaphytus Collaris) Along The Shoreline Of Bull Shoals Lake In Northern Arkansas, S. E. Trauth

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The eastern collared lizard (Crotaphytus collaris) is a large saxicolous predatory lizard, which dwells in patchy, cedar glade environments characteristic of much of the Ozarks. The species can also be found in scattered populations along rocky shoreline habitats of large impoundment reservoirs of northern Arkansas. These lizards time their entrance into and exit from underground, overwintering retreats with decreasing and increasing ambient temperatures of the fall and spring months. During an average spring, several sustained days of warm temperatures from mid-March into April are the primary environmental cues for collared lizards to exit their shelters. Excessive winter/spring precipitation in the …

Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program: Toward A Critical Framework Of Community Peacebuilding; Individual And Community Transformation Through Service And Discourse, Benjamin Valentine Leiker Jan 2011

Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program: Toward A Critical Framework Of Community Peacebuilding; Individual And Community Transformation Through Service And Discourse, Benjamin Valentine Leiker

Capstone Collection

In the form of a case study of the training and implementation of the Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program (JYSEP) by the Magdalene Carney Bahá’í Institute (MCBI), this study contributes to the development of critical youth empowerment which emphasizes community building and sociopolitical transformation rooted in a worldview that recognizes the oneness of humanity. The underlying philosophy upon which the JYSEP organizes its structure, action, reflection, and materials is the idea that our view of reality, human nature, human relationships, and purpose of life shape mold individuals’ and humanity’s state of being. This study, therefore, sought to explore: 1) how …

Is State Power To Protect Health Compatible With Substantive Due Process Rights?, Allan J. Jacobs Jan 2011

Is State Power To Protect Health Compatible With Substantive Due Process Rights?, Allan J. Jacobs

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

Public health laws may mandate drastic limitations on individual liberty, such as forced medication and quarantine. This results in a tension between public health laws and guarantees of liberty such as the Due Process Clauses of the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution. The Supreme Court has resolved this tension in favor of one or the other of these legal principles, depending on the facts and issues involved. Nevertheless, Supreme Court jurisprudence is internally consistent. The Court has applied a level of scrutiny that, while rigorous, is more flexible than strict scrutiny. I denote this as "enhanced …

Artemisia Annua Extracts, Artemisinin And 1,8-Cineole, Prevent Fruit Infestation By A Major, Cosmopolitan Pest Of Apples, Kevin Durden, S. Sellars, B. Cowell, J. J. Brown, M. A. Pszczolkowski

College of Agriculture

Context: Extracts of Artemisia annua (L.) (Asteraceae) and artemisinins are used for treatment of malaria, parasitic infections and have potent anticancer properties in cell lines. Eucalyptus oil and 1,8-cineole have antimicrobial, immune-stimulatory, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, and spasmolytic effects. Codling moth, Cydia pomonella, (L.) (Tortricidae), is a major cosmopolitan pest of the apple, potentially causing damage translating to 40 billion US dollars per year, globally. Currently used control measures are either hazardous to agricultural workers and harmful to environment, or ineffective. The potential of plant-derived semiochemicals for codling moth control is heavily understudied.

Objective: This study evaluated the potential of A. …

Some Girls Play With Trains: Negotiating Gender In A Preschool Classroom, Laura Zellerbach

Graduate Student Independent Studies

This study examines children's understanding of gender roles within a classroom of three and four-year-olds. Discussions of gender in the classroom were recorded and transcribed over a four month period. In January, children were presented with "The Boys and Girls Book, " a book that discussed gender norms in the language of "Some girls play with trains/ Some boys play with trains." Common themes emerged, including gender-typed play, hair and clothing as signifiers of gender, marketing and material goods as related to gender roles, and the use of conventional and unconventional gender stereotypes. These children's changing understandings and rationales concerning …

Law Papers and Journal Articles

The creation, under Section 234 of the Constitution of South Africa (1996) of a South African Charter of Religious Rights and Freedoms, signed by every major religious group in South African as well as representatives of leading South African Constitutional Commissions and others is a development of some importance and potential world significance. It will be, once passed into law, the first Charter created under this section. The civil society initial phase of discussions, consultations, meetings and drafting and re-drafting led to the public signing ceremony at the University of Johannesburg on 21 October 2010. The next phase moves to …

Gay, Lesbian, And Bisexual Spirituality: An Intersectional Identity Study, Zachary Birch Jan 2011

Gay, Lesbian, And Bisexual Spirituality: An Intersectional Identity Study, Zachary Birch

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With college students becoming more interested in the spiritual dimensions of their lives (Astin, 2004; Lindholm, 2007), gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) students may have a harder time finding the support to navigate their spiritual selves. Because of this, the intersection of spiritual identity and GLB identity was investigated. Specifically, this study sought to see if students‟ GLB identities affect their spiritual identities, if their spiritual identities affect their GLB identities, and if there was a connection and intersection between the two. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight students. This study showed that there could be a relationship …

Visual Knowledge Representation Of Conceptual Semantic Networks, Leyla Zhuhadar, Olfa Nasraoui, Robert Wyatt, Rong Yang

Analytics & Information Systems Faculty Publications

This article presents methods of using visual analysis to visually represent large amounts of massive, dynamic, ambiguous data allocated in a repository of learning objects. These methods are based on the semantic representation of these resources. We use a graphical model represented as a semantic graph. The formalization of the semantic graph has been intuitively built to solve a real problem which is browsing and searching for lectures in a vast repository of colleges/courses located at Western Kentucky University1. This study combines Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) with Semantic Factoring to decompose complex, vast concepts into their primitives in order to …

Profiles In Science For Science Librarians: "What Lives Where, And Why": Alfred Russel Wallace, And The Field Of Biogeography, Charles H. Smith

DLPS Faculty Publications

Biogeography, the study of animal and plant distribution, has a history extending back to at least the eighteenth century. But it was not until the work of Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in the mid-nineteenth century that it really came into its own as a science. Darwin’s importance notwithstanding, it was really Wallace who put the field on the map, and many of today’s research threads can be traced back to his influence. This article provides a summary review of Wallace’s life and work and biogeography as a field of study, including Wallace’s role in its development.
