Empirical Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Eye Tracking-Based Search Performance Diagnosis And Feedback Methods, Meredith Carroll Jan 2010

Empirical Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Eye Tracking-Based Search Performance Diagnosis And Feedback Methods, Meredith Carroll

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In today's complex combat environments, troops are often faced with increasingly challenging tasks different from those experienced in the past. Warfighters must be trained in adaptive perceptual skill sets, such as search strategies that enable them to detect threats across any number of environmental, cultural, and situational conditions. The goal of the present study was to explore how advanced technology, specifically eye tracking, can be used to increase understanding of perceptual processes such as search and detection and provide tools that can be used to train search skills. Experiment 1 examined a method of diagnosing perceptual performance in order to …

Structural, Electronic, Vibrational And Thermodynamical Properties Of Surfaces And Nanoparticles, Handan Yildirim Jan 2010

Structural, Electronic, Vibrational And Thermodynamical Properties Of Surfaces And Nanoparticles, Handan Yildirim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The main focus of the thesis is to have better understanding of the atomic and electronic structures, vibrational dynamics and thermodynamics of metallic surfaces and bi-metallic nanoparticles (NPs) via a multi-scale simulational approach. The research presented here involves the study of the physical and chemical properties of metallic surfaces and NPs that are useful to determine their functionality in building novel materials. The study follows the 'bottom-up' approach for which the knowledge gathered at the scale of atoms and NPs serves as a base to build, at the macroscopic scale, materials with desired physical and chemical properties. We use a …

Epitaxial Growth, Characterization And Application Of Novel Wide Bandgap Oxide Semiconductors, Jeremy Mares Jan 2010

Epitaxial Growth, Characterization And Application Of Novel Wide Bandgap Oxide Semiconductors, Jeremy Mares

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this work, a body of knowledge is presented which pertains to the growth, characterization and exploitation of high quality, novel II-IV oxide epitaxial films and structures grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The two compounds of primary interest within this research are the ternary films NixMg1-xO and ZnxMg1-xO and the investigation focuses predominantly on the realization, assessment and implementation of these two oxides as optoelectronic materials. The functioning hypothesis for this largely experimental effort has been that these cubic ternary oxides can be exploited - and possibly even juxtaposed - to realize novel wide band gap optoelectronic technologies. The …

Fast Response Dual Frequency Liquid Crystal Materials, Qiong Song Jan 2010

Fast Response Dual Frequency Liquid Crystal Materials, Qiong Song

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dual frequency liquid crystal (DFLC) exhibits a positive dielectric anisotropy at low frequencies and negative dielectric anisotropy at high frequencies. The frequency where dielectric anisotropy is zero is called crossover frequency. DFLC can achieve fast rise time and fast decay time with the assistance of applied voltage. However, one drawback of DFLC is that it has dielectric heating effect when driven at a high frequency. Thus, the first part of this dissertation is to develop low crossover frequency DFLC materials. The dielectric relaxation and physical properties of some single- and double-ester compounds were investigated. Experimental results indicate that the double-ester …

Machinima And Video-Based Soft Skills Training, Curtis Conkey Jan 2010

Machinima And Video-Based Soft Skills Training, Curtis Conkey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Multimedia training methods have traditionally relied heavily on video based technologies and significant research has shown these to be very effective training tools. However production of video is time and resource intensive. Machinima (pronounced 'muh-sheen-eh-mah') technologies are based on video gaming technology. Machinima technology allows video game technology to be manipulated into unique scenarios based on entertainment or training and practice applications. Machinima is the converting of these unique scenarios into video vignettes that tell a story. These vignettes can be interconnected with branching points in much the same way that education videos are interconnected as vignettes between decision points. …

Integrating Universal Design For Learning Concepts Into Secondary General Education Instructional Methods Courses, Kimberly Pawling Jan 2010

Integrating Universal Design For Learning Concepts Into Secondary General Education Instructional Methods Courses, Kimberly Pawling

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Because many general education teachers feel unprepared to provide students with disabilities with appropriate instruction, changes to teacher education programs are needed (Burdette, 2007; Smith et al., 2010). Teacher education programs need to integrate content regarding instructional methods for teaching and accommodating students with disabilities in secondary, general education classrooms (Burdette, 2007; Smith et al., 2010). The results of the research should provide insight (1) to determine if integrating instruction on UDL into preservice SGE students' instructional methods courses will increase students' knowledge of UDL and (2) to determine if integrating instruction on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) will affect …

Privacy As Product Safety, James Grimmelmann Jan 2010

Privacy As Product Safety, James Grimmelmann

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Online social media confound many of our familiar expectations about privacy. Contrary to popular myth, users of social software like Facebook do care about privacy, deserve it, and have trouble securing it for themselves. Moreover, traditional database-focused privacy regulations on the Fair Information Practices model, while often worthwhile, fail to engage with the distinctively social aspects of these online services.

Instead, online privacy law should take inspiration from a perhaps surprising quarter: product-safety law. A web site that directs users' personal information in ways they don't expect is a defectively designed product, and many concepts from products liability law could …

Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac: Creatures Of Regulatory Privilege, David J. Reiss Jan 2010

Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac: Creatures Of Regulatory Privilege, David J. Reiss

This book chapter addresses the appropriate role of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-chartered, privately owned mortgage finance companies, in the United States housing finance sector. The federal government recently placed Fannie and Freddie in conservatorship. These two massive companies are profit-driven, but as government-sponsored enterprises they also have a government-mandated mission to provide liquidity and stability to the United States mortgage market and to achieve certain affordable housing goals. How the two companies should exit their conservatorship has implications that reach throughout the global financial markets and are of key importance to the future of American housing finance …

Rethinking The Future Of Self-Regulation In The Financial Industry, Saule T. Omarova Jan 2010

Rethinking The Future Of Self-Regulation In The Financial Industry, Saule T. Omarova

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

In today's post-crisis world, arguing in favor of self-regulation in the financial services industry is sure to raise many eyebrows and invite significant disagreement. Much of the skepticism in this respect may be fully justified: the lack of truly effective incentives or political obstacles may ultimately foreclose the possibility of creating a new regime of embedded self-regulation aimed at detection and prevention of systemic financial risks. Nevertheless, as this Article sought to demonstrate, the realities of today's financial marketplace make it critically important that we give the idea of industry self-regulation a full consideration.

The main goal of this Article …

The Torture Lawyers, Jens David Ohlin Jan 2010

The Torture Lawyers, Jens David Ohlin

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

One of the longest shadows cast by the Bush Administration’s War on Terror involves the fate of the torture lawyers who authored or signed memoranda regarding torture or enhanced interrogation techniques against detainees. Should they face professional sanction or even prosecution for their involvement? The following Article suggests that their fate implicates some of the deepest questions of criminal law theory and that resolution of the debate requires a fundamental reorientation of the most important areas of justifications and excuses. First, the debate about torture has been overly focused on justifications for torture. This can be explained in part by …

1, 2-Bis (Phenylsulfonyl)-1h-Indole As An Acceptor Of Organocuprate Nucleophiles, David C. Qian, Philip E. Alford, Tara L. S. Kishbaugh, Sean T. Jones, Gordon W. Gribble Jan 2010

1, 2-Bis (Phenylsulfonyl)-1h-Indole As An Acceptor Of Organocuprate Nucleophiles, David C. Qian, Philip E. Alford, Tara L. S. Kishbaugh, Sean T. Jones, Gordon W. Gribble

Dartmouth Scholarship

1,2-Bis(phenylsulfonyl)-1H-indole is a novel example of an electron-deficient indole that undergoes nucleophilic attack at C-3. Though a variety of other organometallic nucleophiles fail to engender nucleophilic substitution, organocuprates produce 3-substituted 2-(phenylsulfonyl)-1H-indoles. These reactions contribute to the growing number of examples of nucleophilic addition to the indole core.

The Characterization Of Aerosol Particle Contamination As The Result Of Carry-Over And Cross-Over In Enthalpy Wheels, Rodney G. Handy, Kevin Rodgers, Jon Wang, Matt Tumey, Danny Rodriguez, William J. Hutzel

School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

This paper provides results from a study that characterized the particle distributions found from variable contaminated airstreams in energy recovery ventilators (ERV) during two different test scenarios. The first scenario involved the measurement of the particulate concentrations during an operational situation when the pressure differential forces cross-flow leakage between the exhaust and intake streams. The second scenario involved the characterization of aerosol particulate concentrations from the carry-over contamination when the wheel was not in operation. The findings from the study concluded that if a source of aerosol particulate matter is present in an environment utilizing an ERV system, then cross-over …

Do You Know How Your Children Are? International Perspectives On Child Abuse, Mistreatment, And Neglect, Gordon A. Crews, Angela D. Crews Jan 2010

Do You Know How Your Children Are? International Perspectives On Child Abuse, Mistreatment, And Neglect, Gordon A. Crews, Angela D. Crews

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

In the early 1980s, televised public service announcements in the United States queried, “Parents …it is 10:00 pm, do you know where your children are?” These were launched through the media as reminders for American parents to take a moment and think about their children and to strive to inform themselves of their children‟s activities. Similar broadcasts to urge parents to interact with their children and to provide simple parenting tips have followed in various forms since this time. An interesting realization is that almost all of these “messages” were directed towards the parents by the government for the children. …

Transmitted Unemployment And Exchange Rate Effect On Labor Market, Youqing Zhou Jan 2010

Transmitted Unemployment And Exchange Rate Effect On Labor Market, Youqing Zhou

Lingnan Theses

This thesis examines the link between exchange rate and unemployment. The unemployment problem in an open economy has mostly been discussed at the micro level. Previous studies focus on job losses from trade by the manufacturing industries. However, the macro level relationship between exchange rate and unemployment has been largely ignored. The aims of this study are twofold. Firstly, a simple theoretical relationship between exchange rate and unemployment is established by the PPP and Phillips curve. The model shows that, under the linked exchange rate system, the unemployment in currency-linked country is a function of the unemployment in the base …

The thesis contains three papers on different areas of housing study in Hong Kong. The first paper focuses on government policy in public housing privatization on housing market and its effect on the overall economy. By comparing the negative impacts of two financial crises in 1997 and 2008 on housing market, the paper tries to offer explanation for the property downturn during 1997-2003. It aims to study how a public housing privatization program would produce adverse effects on housing transactions and the economy. The second one links up the housing market and macro economy. It is found that housing sector …

Phonological Features Of Hong Kong English : Patterns Of Variation And Effects On Local Acceptability, Andrew John Sewell Jan 2010

Phonological Features Of Hong Kong English : Patterns Of Variation And Effects On Local Acceptability, Andrew John Sewell

Lingnan Theses

The changing dynamics of international communication in English have led to a intense questioning of the relevance of native-speaker pronunciation models in language teaching and testing. In addition, the World Englishes approach to local varieties has increased their level of recognition. Both of these developments suggest that English pronunciation models need to be reviewed, and Hong Kong represents an interesting case study. Although it has been claimed that Hong Kong English is at the ‘nativization’ stage, the existence of exonormative attitudes towards English is also well known. Two important questions arise from this inherent tension, neither of which has been …

A Comparison Between The Verbal Interruptions By Speakers Of English As A Lingua Franca (Elf) And Speakers Of English As A Native Language (Enl), Yue Yuan Li Jan 2010

A Comparison Between The Verbal Interruptions By Speakers Of English As A Lingua Franca (Elf) And Speakers Of English As A Native Language (Enl), Yue Yuan Li

Lingnan Theses

Previous research focused primarily on how interruptions vary according to social factors in situations where English is the native language for all speakers (see Menz and Al-Roubaie, 2008; O‟Reilly, 2008; West and Zimmerman, 1983; Zimmerman and West, 1975). Little has been done on interruptions in situations where English is used as a lingua franca. The purpose of this research is to 1) provide conversational evidence on how experienced ELF speakers make interruptions, 2) explore functions of interruptions in ELF communication; 3) compare the types and functions of interruptions in ELF communication with those in ENL communication; 4) compare the types …

Corporate Governance And Earnings Management Before Share Repurchase Announcements In Singapore, Jian Ming Chua

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Share repurchase in Singapore was legalized in 1998. It is well known that investors view share repurchase as good news. This study is based on share repurchase announcements from 2006 to 2009. The mean Cumulative Market-Adjusted Returns (CAR) for the period [0, +1] and [-1, +1] are significant at 1.25% and 1.33% respectively. In Singapore, there are positive abnormal returns following share repurchase announcements in support of the ―free cash flow‖ hypothesis. By using the Singapore Corporate Governance Index as a proxy, the weakly governed companies exhibit the strongest, positive and significant CAR of 2.62% for the period [0, +1]. …
