A Novel Algorithm For Sensorless Motion Control Of Flexible Structures, Islam Shoukry Mohammed Khalil, Emrah Deni̇z Kunt, Asif Sabanovic Jan 2010

A Novel Algorithm For Sensorless Motion Control Of Flexible Structures, Islam Shoukry Mohammed Khalil, Emrah Deni̇z Kunt, Asif Sabanovic

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This article demonstrates the validity of using an actuator as a single platform for measurements during a motion control assignment of flexible systems kept free from any kind of measurement. System acceleration level dynamics, parameters and interaction forces with the environment are coupled in an incident reaction torque that naturally rises when a flexible system is subjected to an action imposed by an attached actuator to the system. This work attempts to decouple each of the system parameters out of the incident coupled reaction torque at the interface point of the actuator with the flexible system by way of measurements …

Modeling And Control Of Flow Problems By Adaptation-Based Linear Parameter Varying Models, Coşku Kasnakoğlu Jan 2010

Modeling And Control Of Flow Problems By Adaptation-Based Linear Parameter Varying Models, Coşku Kasnakoğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper a systematic modeling and control approach for flow problems is considered. A nonlinear Galerkin model is obtained from the partial differential equations (PDEs) describing the flow; and a Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) model is constructed to approximate the Galerkin model, where the parameter variation of the LPV model is controller by an adaptation mechanism. The LPV model is then treated as a surrogate on which the control design is carried out, where the parameter variations provide a range of uncertainty in which the control design must perform satisfactorily. It is shown that if certain conditions are met, …

Experimental Investigation Of Shaft Transducerless Speed And Position Control Of Ac Induction And Interior Permanent Magnet Motors, Ömer Göksu, Ahmet Masum Hava Jan 2010

Experimental Investigation Of Shaft Transducerless Speed And Position Control Of Ac Induction And Interior Permanent Magnet Motors, Ömer Göksu, Ahmet Masum Hava

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In order to drive AC motors with high efficiency and high motion performance, and to provide accurate speed/position control, motor shaft speed and/or position feedback is required. For this purpose, usually transducers (encoder, tachogenerator, resolver, etc.) are installed on the shaft. However, transducers are not preferred in most of the applications since they increase the cost and decrease the reliability of the drive due to their failure prone structure and connections. In such applications, the speed and/or position information of the motor is obtained by estimation methods without using shaft transducers. In this work, motor types and speed/position estimation methods …

Direct Discrete-Time Control Of Port Controlled Hamiltonian Systems, Yaprak Yalçin, Leyla Gören Sümer Jan 2010

Direct Discrete-Time Control Of Port Controlled Hamiltonian Systems, Yaprak Yalçin, Leyla Gören Sümer

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The direct discrete time control of Port Controlled Hamiltonian Systems (PCHS) in the sense of energy shaping and damping injection is considered. In order to give a direct discrete time design method for PCHS, firstly an appropriate discrete gradient is proposed, which enables the derivation of a discrete time equation corresponding to the discrete time counterpart of Hamiltonian Systems. Using this proposed discrete-time model, the discrete-time counterpart of Passivity Based Control (PBC) technique is developed for n-degrees-of-freedom mechanical systems. The discrete-time control rules which correspond to the energy shaping and damping assignment are obtained directly using the discrete time model …

The Use Of Fpga In Field-Oriented Control Of An Induction Machine, Özkan Akin, İrfan Alan Jan 2010

The Use Of Fpga In Field-Oriented Control Of An Induction Machine, Özkan Akin, İrfan Alan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, the feasibility of embedding the field oriented control (FOC) of an induction machine into field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) is investigated. An indirect FOC of an induction machine is simulated in a Matlab Simulink environment using a Xilinx System Generator implemented in a Xilinx Spartan-3 XC3S200 FPGA board. Design of the developed controller for the induction machine is simulated via a Simulink full digital platform. The resulting design has a flexible and modular structure where the designer can customize the hardware blocks by changing the number of inputs, outputs, and algorithm when it is compared to the …

Fuzzy Adaptive Neural Network Approach To Path Loss Prediction In Urban Areas At Gsm-900 Band, Türkan Erbay Dalkiliç, Berna Yeşi̇m Hanci, Ayşen Apaydin Jan 2010

Fuzzy Adaptive Neural Network Approach To Path Loss Prediction In Urban Areas At Gsm-900 Band, Türkan Erbay Dalkiliç, Berna Yeşi̇m Hanci, Ayşen Apaydin

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents the results of the Adaptive-Network Based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) for the prediction of path loss in a specific urban environment. A new algorithm based ANFIS for tuning the path loss model is introduced in this work. The performance of the path loss model which is obtained from proposed algorithm is compared to the Bertoni-Walfisch model, which is one of the best studied for propagation analysis involving buildings. This comparison is based on the mean square error between predicted and measured values. According to the indicated error criterion, the errors related to the predictions that are obtained …

Behaviors Of Real-Time Schedulers Under Resource Modification And A Steady Scheme With Bounded Utilization, Refi̇k Samet, Orhan Fi̇kret Duman Jan 2010

Behaviors Of Real-Time Schedulers Under Resource Modification And A Steady Scheme With Bounded Utilization, Refi̇k Samet, Orhan Fi̇kret Duman

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this article we present an analysis for task models having random resource needs and different arrival patterns. In hard real-time environments like avionic systems or nuclear reactors, the inputs to the system are obtained from real world by using sensors. And it is highly possible for a task to have different resource needs for each period according to these changing conditions of real world. We made an analysis of schedulers for task models having random resources in each period. Since feasibility tests for usual task models are just limited to some specific schedulers and arrival patterns, we made our …

What's In A Name? The Feasibility And Desirability Of Naming Forced Marriage As A Separate Crime Under International Humanitarian Law, Krista Stout Jan 2010

What's In A Name? The Feasibility And Desirability Of Naming Forced Marriage As A Separate Crime Under International Humanitarian Law, Krista Stout

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The phenomenon of forced marriages during armed conflict has recently garnered international attention, as it has become apparent that these coerced relationships are not mere happenstance, but are often the result of strategic planning on the part of armed groups and are thus an integral part of ongoing conflicts around the globe. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to critically examine the phenomenon as it manifests itself in armed conflict situations, with a specific focus on Sierra Leone, and to unpack the various violations that occur under the guise of this pernicious labeling to see whether it is desirable …

Getting Our Act Together: A Review Of The Canadian Derivatives Regulatory Landscape And An Argument For A Dedicated Derivatives Regime, R. Aaron Libbey Jan 2010

Getting Our Act Together: A Review Of The Canadian Derivatives Regulatory Landscape And An Argument For A Dedicated Derivatives Regime, R. Aaron Libbey

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The volume of derivatives in the global financial system has exploded. Before the 1980s, these products were virtually unknown. As of June 2009, the notional market value of outstanding derivatives was in excess of USD $600 trillion. Regulators have been slow to act to date – and where they have acted, the legal, systemic and operational risks associated with derivative financial products have not always been properly determined or resolved. This paper explores the Canadian approach to derivatives regulation, examining its strengths and weaknesses, and looking at improvements that could be made. I argue that the outdated, disorganized and decentralized …

Governing The Sulphur Dioxide Emissions Of Multinational Corporations: Putting The Breaks On The Race-To-The-Bottom, Maren Zimmer Jan 2010

Governing The Sulphur Dioxide Emissions Of Multinational Corporations: Putting The Breaks On The Race-To-The-Bottom, Maren Zimmer

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Multinational corporations are now part of global politics. For effective governance of international environmental problems, their roles in the political process cannot be ignored. This paper will examine “race-to-the-bottom” theory and evaluate whether this race has occurred as a reaction to sulphur dioxide (SO2) regulation, resulting in a need for increased global governance surrounding environmental issues. The paper focuses on SO2 because the Trail Smelter case, which is seen as the birth case for international environmental law, recognized the harm stemming from this pollutant in 1941; scientific evidence has also linked SO2 emissions to acid rain and respiratory problems associated …

Putting The Ivy Out Of The Windows: Presumptions Of Privacy In The Home And R. V. Gomboc, Tipper Mcewan Jan 2010

Putting The Ivy Out Of The Windows: Presumptions Of Privacy In The Home And R. V. Gomboc, Tipper Mcewan

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The law of search and seizure is like ivy growing on Canadians’ homes. It should both connect the home to the greater landscape, by providing a means of balancing the rights of individuals against the concerns of the state, and protect the rights of Canadians to enjoy privacy in their own homes. More than any other place, the home is where Canadians can be themselves. Section 8 of the Charter reads: “Everyone has the right to be secure against unreasonable search or seizure.” However, the jurisprudential ivy that has sprung from this seed has worked its way into the wood …

David Luban, Review Of Daniel Markovits, A Modern Legal Ethics: Adversary Advocacy In A Democratic Age, David Luban Jan 2010

David Luban, Review Of Daniel Markovits, A Modern Legal Ethics: Adversary Advocacy In A Democratic Age, David Luban

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Daniel Markovits offers a novel defense of the traditional partisan advocate’s role, based on the demands of personal integrity. Although he insists that the adversary system requires lawyers to lie and cheat (regardless of the particular ethics rules in place), it is possible to redescribe these lawyerly vices as the virtue of fidelity to a client, expressed through what John Keats called “negative capability”—a suppression of the self in order to allow someone else’s story to shine forth. These are first-personal moral ideals, and Markovits argues against the primacy of second- and third-personal moral ideals (such as Kantianism and utilitarianism) …

Prediction Of Brain Tumor Progression Using A Machine Learning Technique, Yuzhong Shen, Debrup Banerjee, Jiang Li, Adam Chandler, Yufei Shen, Frederic D. Mckenzie, Jihong Wang, Nico Karssemeijer (Ed.), Ronald M. Summers (Ed.) Jan 2010

Prediction Of Brain Tumor Progression Using A Machine Learning Technique, Yuzhong Shen, Debrup Banerjee, Jiang Li, Adam Chandler, Yufei Shen, Frederic D. Mckenzie, Jihong Wang, Nico Karssemeijer (Ed.), Ronald M. Summers (Ed.)

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A machine learning technique is presented for assessing brain tumor progression by exploring six patients' complete MRI records scanned during their visits in the past two years. There are ten MRI series, including diffusion tensor image (DTI), for each visit. After registering all series to the corresponding DTI scan at the first visit, annotated normal and tumor regions were overlaid. Intensity value of each pixel inside the annotated regions were then extracted across all of the ten MRI series to compose a 10 dimensional vector. Each feature vector falls into one of three categories:normal, tumor, and normal but progressed to …

Measurements And Predictions Of Subsidence Induced By Soil Consolidation Using Persistent Scatterer Insar And A Hyperbolic Model, Sang-Wan Kim, Shimon Wdowinski, Timothy H. Dixon, Falk Amelung, Jeong W. Kim, Joong-Sun Won Jan 2010

Measurements And Predictions Of Subsidence Induced By Soil Consolidation Using Persistent Scatterer Insar And A Hyperbolic Model, Sang-Wan Kim, Shimon Wdowinski, Timothy H. Dixon, Falk Amelung, Jeong W. Kim, Joong-Sun Won

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

A space-borne SAR interferometric technique is presented for measuring and predicting ground subsidence associated with soil consolidation. Instead of a conventional constant velocity model, a hyperbolic model is introduced for persistent scatterer SAR interferometry (PSI) processing. Twenty three JERS-1 SAR acquired between 1992 and 1998 were used to measure land subsidence in Mokpo city, Korea which had been primarily built on land reclaimed from the sea. Two subsidence field maps were derived and compared: a constant velocity model and a hyperbolic model. Non-linear components depending on the stage of soil consolidation are well represented by the hyperbolic model. The maximum …

A Comparative Financial Analysis Of Fast Pyrolysis Plants In Southwest Oregon, Colin Brink Sorenson Jan 2010

A Comparative Financial Analysis Of Fast Pyrolysis Plants In Southwest Oregon, Colin Brink Sorenson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

There are millions of acres of forestland in the Western United States that could benefit from fuel reduction treatments to improve forest health and reduce wildfire fuels. These treatments generate forest residues that are typically piled and burned. However, with increasing concerns about energy security, high oil prices, air quality from pile burning and climate change, there is great interest in examining ways to economically use these residues as a renewable energy source. Pyrolysis of forest biomass is one method that shows promise, though the financial feasibility of doing so has not been previously investigated. This study presents the expected …

The Right Stuff: Habitus And Embodied Virtue In Sir Gawain And The Green Knight, Alice F. Blackwell Jan 2010

The Right Stuff: Habitus And Embodied Virtue In Sir Gawain And The Green Knight, Alice F. Blackwell

Quidditas

One of the themes weaving in and out of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is that of virtue: Gawain’s shield proclaims his virtue, yet at the end of the Green Chapel scene, he exclaims vice has destroyed his virtue, leaving him “faulty and false.” This scene has troubled critics and students, however, for many consider his reaction excessive for his default on the rules of a courtly game. The present paper contends that the notion of virtue written for Gawain naturalizes embodied virtue. While both religious and lay writers tended to argue that one possessed predisposition to moral or …

Review Article: Quidditas And Medieval Studies Today, Erin Felicia Labbie Jan 2010

Review Article: Quidditas And Medieval Studies Today, Erin Felicia Labbie

Quidditas

Medieval studies today may be precisely characterized by quidditas. The Aristotelian term quidditas became central to the development of medieval scholastic inquiry in the West when, in 1066 Anselm of Canterbury wrote the Monologion. This eleventh-century foray into the revival of Aristotelian thought is also seen in Porphyry’s third-century translations of Aristotle and in Boethius’ sixth-century concern with universals elaborated in his commentaries on universals and categories. For Anselm and the developing model of medieval scholastic thought, the Monologion and its immediate successor, the Proslogian, assert a double discourse of the difference between quidditas and haeccitas, …

Saints And The Social Order: Alexander Barclay’S The Life Of St. George, Maggie Gallup Kopp Jan 2010

Saints And The Social Order: Alexander Barclay’S The Life Of St. George, Maggie Gallup Kopp

Quidditas

This paper examines The Life of St. George, Alexander Barclay’s 1515 translation of a humanist Latin prose poem. Barclay, who styled himself a laureate in the tradition of Lydgate, adapts laureate poetic practice in order to address a noble audience in a bid to gain court patronage. Barclay’s emendations and additions transform the hagiography of England’s patron saint into a commentary on traditional English ideals of citizenship and good governance, aimed at an audience comprised of both common citizens and noble elites, including, as this paper argues, the young king Henry VIII.

At Home With American Literature, Shauna Robertson Jan 2010

At Home With American Literature, Shauna Robertson

The Utah English Journal

In 1822, the American actor, poet, and playwright John Howard Payne wrote a song called “Home! Sweet Home!” It became an instant hit, and its refrain, “[b]e it ever so humble, there's no place like home,” has become etched in our cultural memory. The author L. Frank Baum echoed this sentiment with a twist at the end of his novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Most people are familiar with Dorothy’s chant as she clicks the heels of her ruby slippers together in the 1939 film, but Baum’s literary version is even more powerful. "No matter how dreary and gray …
